  • Who was Zarathustra? You may know the name Zarathustra from Friedrich Nietzsche's book Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but who was the real figure who bore that name? Zarathustra or Zarathushtra was the founder of Zoroastrianism. He was significant in Friedrich Nietzsche's eyes for establishing a dualism between good and evil. Nietzsche also approved of the value he put on truth. This video seeks to answer who was Zarathushtra in the eyes of the Greeks and Nietzsche, what is the Western view of Zarathushtra? It is not an in-depth theological breakdown of Zoroastrianism.

I’ll give it an attempt when I get to Nietzsche in this series. I’m really looking forward to trying to make that video actually. I’ll try and point out the Greek influences and whatnot. There will never be a perfect analysis of TSZ. It is like trying to give a complete analysis of the Bible, but hopefully I do an ok job. I will do it in the old book review format. It may turn into more of a brief lecture series.

Richard Strauss made a famous tone poem in 1896 based on Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

The beauty of Zarathustra’s poetic style is that you can view the Gathas as a literal piece or purely metaphorical.
Zoroastrianism is the name western civilization gave the religion but to Zarathustra and those who followed the religion they call themselves Mazdayasna or in English, worshippers of wisdom.
So before the Greeks created the word “philosophy” (love of wisdom) Zarathustra spoke of worship of wisdom.
Ahura Mazda translates to Lord of Wisdom.
Seeking Asha just means seeking ultimate truth.
The list goes on throughout the Gathas but you can be an atheist or an agnostic and still worship wisdom and seek ultimate truth like Zarathustra urges all throughout his Gathas

Best comment. It’s even more wild knowing he’s the sacred founder of a religion. It’s kind of like a non-Christian writing a fanfic about Jesus.
