Some other notes: - when animating your head/body movement, remember subtle movements can be as strong as big movements. Use calm moments to emphasize your big moments. - when drawing the mouth movements, make the mouth shape in reference to the sound being made, not necessarily the letter/word. For example, if a character was saying 'hour', you'd animate them with the mouth movements like 'ow-uh' - You can use a mirror to help with mouth shapes! Say the sentence you're lip syncing to yourself like 10 times in the mirror and watch your mouth. Exaggerate it if you like - the face will move along with the mouth sometimes, like the face an squash and stretch depending on the sound or emphasis they're making. - Think of the breathes the character is taking too, and how their face/mouth will finish after they've said their thing. After you speak sometimes you don't instantly close your mouth Uhh I might add more later I was just too dumb to remember to say these in the video
Hey Finch! Since you animate in Photoshop all the time I wanted to ask a question, do you know how to tween in photoshop (if possible at all)? If anyone else knows the answer, please tell me!
The problem of animating lip-sinking around other people: Me: Yee- ye-ouu- hmmm no... Yeee-you shh-szhh Brother: Whet are you doing ಠ_ಠ Me: *ignores* Sh-shheal- hal- d-deie- die... DONE! :D Brother: O_O *backs away slowly*
Oh my gosh, she used satisfied from Hamilton for this. Also, Finch, I love how you emphasize doing the lip syncing with your animations, a lot of other animators get really lazy and don't even animate the words.
your videos are so so so helpful i thought that i would have to buy a crap ton of expensive software but i already have photoshop and i am SO encouraged by how easy you make this. i've been using frame animation instead of the video timeline but now i'm going to try it this way THANK YOU
Having been playing Stardew Valley (with the current in-game seasoning being Fall) just a little while ago, the music is throwing me off because I have to keep reminding myself that I don't have the game open and its the video making the sound...But either way, I really enjoyed this video! Animation isn't something I do (I would never have the patience for it) but its great seeing how people do it! Always excited to see a new animation part from you~
when you first started drawing digitally was it hard to keep your hand steady and get the lines straight/right? I'm trying to transition from hand drawing to digital but im having a very hard time. any tips or advice?
***** I think animating is easier on the computer because traditional animation involves a lot of paper, no instant playback, having to take pictures of each of your frames and put them in order to view them etc
eyyyy Finchwing uploaded another tutorial again!! I'm really excited because lipsync is something I'm a beginner at and have (badly) animated it before :T haha, thanks Finc and (not creepily) I really like your voice cc: Thank you for the tutorial! and yayy, (kind of?) early squad!
Oh wow even four years later this is still helping people... I tried this with my own character, when it's finished I'll post it here! (I just did 'I'm about to change your life' ;-;)
Hey! I really love your animations, and appreciate these tutorials. Even if I don't use all of them, it's nice to see you trying to help younger animators improve. Also, I really like the way you do the teeth at an angle, and I also think your sketches are really neat. Seriously, my sketches are getting better but still thick blobs. Oh well. Thanks!
I'm not very good at drawing, much less animating, but I'm working on it, and if I someday do get any good, this will help me a lot. It makes so much sense. Thank you!
how do you get your lines so nice in photoshop? i've been working with the program for over a week and i still haven't figured out the smooth lines trick. cx
It's mostly practice, I've been using my softwares for about 6 months now, and I can confirm that my lines have definitely improved as I got used to my tablet and the program. So don't worry if it takes a while!
but also there might be a smooth line button not sure if there is one in Photoshop, there is one in TVPaint. But I am going to end up using Photoshop since I already own it. Smooth line button is one that will take those lines that are made with points and smooth them out so curves are nice and round vs. how we might render on digital without intervention. (jagged) It would be nice to have some confirmation from finchwing as to whether there is a 'button' like this on Photoshop? (not sure I remember where it is in TVPaint, but it is there.)
In my experience, it's the tablet's drivers. I used to get super jittery lines whenever I would draw and it would get super annoying but I updated the drivers and the lines come out buttery smooth now!
WOWZA i normally struggle with lip sync, and like you said, it's really hard to fit in so many frames into such a fast sentence whilst still looking natural - but this tutorial helped a lOT finch winch man you brought up a lot of great tips and explained reeally well!!
This is my favorite thing ever EVER! Thank you so much for this. Seeing your process really helps me figure out where I'm going wrong. I'm really new so I keep putting in too many frames, or the wrong frames, if that makes sense? Thank you so much again, these tutorials are really, really helpful!
I REMEMBER THAT NIGHT I JUST MIGHT REGRET THAT NIGHT FOR THE REST OF MY DAYYYYS! (I memorized the whole thing... I'm crazy) Anyways this video really helped! Thanks!
I'm having a problem with the timeline, I've imported my audio but whenever i hit space a loading symbol appears and i have to wait a few seconds before anything happens. does anyone else have this problem or a solution for it?
How do you download the music? I don't have a computer, but when I do I plan on using Photoshop and make art/animations. How do you download the music for the animation?
Do I cut the audio before I put it in photoshop? Also when I add any audio into the timeline, sound is never played. The scroll moves across the frames and the audio is right below it but I never hear any sound (yes, I checked to make sure it wasn't muted)
I really mess up on the muzzle and body part I'm really bad at lip syncing to what app or program do you use cause I need help a lot so I need your help Finch wing or other people
So pretty much the same way I thought it out, I have to trim the voice sequence for every word said. Its the only way. I tried to apply the milliseconds from a voice sequence in adobe premiere pro to the frames/milliseconds in Photoshop but that doesn't work because it's just out of sync. I had to literally play and stop at every word spoken to calculate the amount frames needed to match the timing of each word and thats just prolonging the process and a possible hit and miss. This process seems easier even though I had this in mind. I recently downloaded a lip sync add on for Photoshop but I have to see if this extension capable of working with Photoshop CC 2017😑😒
The problem I have is I can't necessarily make the correct mouth movements whenever I'm trying to draw a frame. Whenever I draw a 't' sound, it comes out just like a horizontal oval. That's pretty much what it is for all of the sounds I try drawing. I can't figure out what the equivalent for human words would be for animal mouth movement :T However, this will be quite useful when I manage to figure it out ;-;
What app is this? I just have to make good animation. I usually use an app called "Sketch" to edit my frames andake good art. So I use an mobile app to animated called "Roughanimator". It's very good for ppl that uses their phone or tablet/iPad to make animations. Just recommended!

+claire hornung (hetaliasruck) i think she was working on a map part that has the song satisfied in it, but I could be wrong.
+Killerwhale123 if so, I want to see it
I noticed they used Satisfied also xD (went to the comments to make sure I was right)
+Killerwhale123 yes, it's the map part. she was also working on it in her Q&A stream. excited to see it finished :3
I cant get the phrase "im about to change your life" outta mah head xD
I think the best part is that you don't make your lines super mega perfect, but your lines never look like shit. that's pure talent right there.
aa thank you! I used to try to make them really smooth but animation kicked it outta me aha
this tutorial is about to change my life

Use fast strokes! :0 some people take time getting used to it, don't worry
+Finchwing thank you so much for responding! ❤ I'm starting out trying to animate on my tablet, is it easier on computer though?
+Hunter Hartley I believe its easier on a tablet, because if you use a stylus, its more like a pencil, so its easier to draw
***** I think animating is easier on the computer because traditional animation involves a lot of paper, no instant playback, having to take pictures of each of your frames and put them in order to view them etc

I'm having a problem with the timeline, I've imported my audio but whenever i hit space a loading symbol appears and i have to wait a few seconds before anything happens. does anyone else have this problem or a solution for it?
photoshop can use up a lot of the computer's power so all the loading is probably just a computer problem unfortunately

I just have to make good animation.
I usually use an app called "Sketch" to edit my frames andake good art. So I use an mobile app to animated called "Roughanimator". It's very good for ppl that uses their phone or tablet/iPad to make animations.

This is so useful- thanks so much!
