Hey Tshego, just to share some tips to avoid scalp burn. Base your scalp with oil/hair food day before relaxer. Also remember professional/salon relaxers are usually lye relaxers which are good for your hair but harsher on the scalp. Try avoid stimulants like coffee before getting a relaxer, or anything that increases blood flow therefore opening up your pores making your scalp more sensitive. Even simple things like wearing a hat or going to gym just before a relaxer session can increase sensitivity
Great tips and in addition apart from Basing the scalp with grease/vaseline the day before I usually start basing it a week before hand. My scalp is extremely sensitive and this had been the most helpful tip I've implemented.
Same. My hair thriiiiiives when I take care of my hair myself without salons. I’ve since stopped and starting afresh because my armpit length hair was damaged by just 2 salon visits 🥲.
I've had relaxed hair for about 15 years now, but only really started caring for my hair (as in actively hands-on) in late 2019. And I can tell you that prioritising the health of your hair makes ALL the difference. My hair has experienced immense growth and improvement till this day. I wish I could attach pictures. And my hair is generally very thick too so I understand what the journey can be like from that perspective. All this to say, yes! Prioritise the health of your hair and make consistent effort towards it in that regard. You will not regret it. Consistency is key. Lastly, I fairly recently began a new technique to maximise moisture retention in my hair. Hopefully this could help you (and/or anyone else reading this) not feel the need to add moisture too often, or condition your hair too often, that it becomes laden and doesn't have that bouncy, airy, flowy feel you desire for you hair. After washing your hair, apply a leave-in hair conditioner to your hair, and also apply a light hair serum it. Then place a shower cap over your hair and let it sit for at least an hour or so (preferably longer). After this time, take the cap off and style your hair as usual. There will be a noticeable difference. My hair typically feels so well nourished for days following this and I don't feel the need to moisturise it as often as I used to; I just add some hair serum instead and before I know it, it's been a week and it's already time for another wash day. I usually let my hair air dry, but I'd be keen to hear how this technique works with heat styling. All the best!
I’m newly relaxed and I don’t know which products to use, I’ve tried dark and lovely products but my hair hates them. May I ask what type of shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioner and serum would you recommend for someone like me who doesn’t want to use heat on the hair
@@busimashiane8905 I'd be happy to! I used Dark and Lovely products for the first few years that my hair was relaxed, but I switched to the Olive Oil/ORS relaxer because my hair needed something a bit stronger, or perhaps just something different. The ORS relaxer seemed/seems to fit the bill. I use the normal strength kind. I currently use the moisture intensive Tresemme shampoo. However, I have bounced around shampoos quite a bit, so just go with whichever kind doesn't leave your hair feeling dry, brittle or just strangely coarse. I don't use any rinse-out conditioners. Only leave-in conditioner, but this is purely personal preference (less steps on wash days lol). I use Cantu leave-in conditioner; alternating between the Shea butter kind and the Argan Oil kind, because my hair seems to love both so why not? haha. I think they have a new Grape seed oil kind, but I'm yet to try that out. Lastly, I currently use Isoplus Oil Sheen Revitalising Hair Serum with Argan oil. I really hope this helps. All the best with your hair journey!
@@busimashiane8905Try Vatika, Ors Olive oil and olaplax(Great for processed or damaged hair). Those products are moisturising but don’t make my hair greasy.
I didn’t relax my hair for 6 months because I was wearing braids. It allowed me to stretch my relaxer because at the time my hair was breaking. My hair grew a lot over the last 6 months and it’s much healthier now. I once stretched my relaxer a few extra weeks and it didn’t go so well but stretching it while in a protective style done my hair wonders. I can’t go longer than 6 - 8 weeks 14 weeks is a lot 💕
Managing all hair is a challenge. I had bad habits as a natural that resulted in set backs. Now that I’m relaxed, I’m more disciplined but by no means do I expect to not have a set back. The lesson we all learn is to stick to our regimen and be consistent. When we don’t, our hair lets us know. The solution is to get back to what worked to grow it the first time. Kudos to you for being honest and you will absolutely grow it back!
I think the extended relaxer stretch on top of your hair being in braids is what exacerbated your hair damage. While in braids the ends of your hair is basically neglected and dry, so even though you have new growth, the neglected ends break off and you lose that length. Doing the moisture routine your hair will definitely bounce back quickly.
Also had to do a big chop (went for a pixie cut) on my relaxed hair in 2021, 2 years after relaxing my natural hair. I’ve found 2 main things have helped with hair health and length retention. 1) Stretching, but once I get to the 3 month mark, I braid my hair but only for 4 weeks to minimize manipulation. Give my hair a one week break then braid for another 3-4 weeks. 2) prepping my hair for 2 weeks before relaxing. So the first week after braids/ cornrows are out, I’ll do a moisture deep treatment. Then second week I’ll do a protein deep treatment. Then I relax the following week. So by the time I’m retouching my relaxer it’s about 6 months post and my hair is super thick and healthy. And I also make sure my scalp is healthy: scalp scrub with every other wash and Miele/ Masodi organics hair oil once or twice a week. All the best with your hair journey 🙏🏾
I remember the video about not moisturising relaxed hair and confused because other relaxed girlies like hairlicious deffo moisturised her relaxed hair. I’m glad that you are able to address videos that didn’t have the best advice :) . I’m positive your hair will flourish exactly like how you envision it 😌🙌🏾🩷 Deffo following this journey x
Thought you were going to reveal a little Afro!😅 thanks for your honesty.. hair care is a journey and I think set backs are normal so all the best for you and your hair in 2024
This is why I am transitioning to natural hair. I've relaxed my hair for about 23 years and all the issues you have with your relaxed hair is what I've been experiencing. Since I've stopped relaxing my hair with a lot of new growths, I can tell you that I find it easy to manage my hair better and also the shedding has reduced drastically. I make my oils myself and also make my hair myself too which has been helpful. I'm grateful to God for this new journey, He has made it possible.
Hey! The Japanese hair straightening treatment is the same bond breaker that is used in curly perm before they put the curls in. BUT you can’t use it on hair that had lye or no lye products in it. You’d literally have to completely grow out and chop off the relaxed hair before using the Thio - Japanese relaxer . I hope you read this before doing it because you’ll experience really bad breakage if you do over lap 😨
i do 6 month relaxer stretches and my hair loves it. how i manage to avoid breakage is by always having my hair tucked away not manipulating it because of the difference in textures between new growth and relaxed portion. that being said, it means i only get to enjoy my hair out ryt after i get it retouched for like 2 weeks to a month then im back to tucking it away
Hi Tshego- thank you for being so vulnerable and for being honest with us. I’m so sorry you had to get a big cut but believe it’s all part of learning and growing. Don’t want to lie - a part of me wished you returned to natural hair (I loved your natural hair series and still watch it). 2024 is dedicated to healthy hair ❤ . Please can you do an updated makeup tutorial when you get a chance 🤗
7:24 I wash my hair every two weeks. I’m currently wearing passion twists for about two months now and I will take them down next week and give my hair some tlc. You can try doing hot oil treatments overnight before washing. I use a mix of castor oil and coconut oil and even though my hair is thick now, I want it to get even thicker
I came from the "i dont belive in moisturize and seal" video and let me tell you it takes a lot of integrity as person to come and say i was wrong, dont be discouraged i have being 13 years relaxed and im still learning i have being trougth all the long hair the short the long hair and strangly ends and you never stop learning but you will find your sweet spot , hope you have a beautiful hair Journey with less setbacks ❤
I’ve spent about 30 years wearing my hair relaxed. I’ve worn my hair natural intermittently for about maybe 6 years. I never made it past 2 years. I am a pro at taking care of my relaxed hair. I’ve also been extremely lucky to have always had great professionals apply my relaxers. I’ve never experienced over processing. I’m now stretching my relaxers for 12 weeks, but back in the day I got them every 6 weeks with no problem. I’ve worn my hair long and short. I’ve never had problems with breakage. I don’t moisturize and seal or put my hair away. I wear it down and enjoy it. I only use heat every 2 weeks when I wash my hair. I preserve my style by wrapping (around my head), rolling, or pin curling my hair. Wrapping is underrated. It’s an excellent way to leverage your natural sebum and smooth new growth. By wrapping my hair, I distribute my natural sebum along the strands and I believe it’s taking care of keeping my hair healthy and preventing dryness. Tip: Ask your stylist to base your scalp before your retouch. You definitely shouldn’t feel burning. If you do, speak up as soon as you feel tingling. Also, ask them to retouch your edges last.
Honestly, I had a setback too- after I started getting two salon relaxers! The only time I got burned as well. I'm going back to doing my own hair too. You got this!
Professional stylists have burned my hair a few times. I’ve been relaxed for 20 years and it is SO much better relaxing my hair by myself. We are naturally gentler on our hair and scalp and listening to ourselves when we do it at home :)
Same here. One stylist used 'Super' strength relaxer on my fine, non-porous hair: it broke off. Another used a ammonium thioglycolate relaxer, despite my telling her it makes my hair hard and turns it into straw. She insisted it would be fine. I had to cut if all off. I have paid good money, only to have my hair ruined. After that last experience, I do my own relaxers with little to no damage. I wait a minimum of 3 - 4 months for touch ups.
Hi Tshego! Thanks for your honesty and vulnerability here! I don't know if its just my eyes but to be honest your looks the same to me haha, If you hadn't had mentioned you cut it I would have just thought it was the curls and a small trim making it look a little shorter than usual. So sorry to hear about all your experiences with chemical burns from relaxers. I can't believe in 2024, even in professional salons that its still possible to experience chemical burns from relaxer. The haircare industry really needs to do better for black women and work to formulate better relaxers/ hair straightening chemicals that are safer. Thanks for sharing!
I thought you went for a pixie 😩I almost died. Your hair will grow back with better care. You are already doing well at taking care of it, so in no time, that length and volume will be back. ❤
I found that when i got chemical burns from relaxers. My scalp was sensitive scalp. I learned to base/grease my scalp a day before going to the hairdresser. I also went to a dermatologist to heal my scalp.
I have bra length relax hair. Its a never ending journey. I use a light mist and hair serum. With this my hair is flows and bouce beautifully. I notice when i use moisturizer that it weights down my hair, no bounce, just flat. I was my hair once a week. I also air dry using a leave in conditoning treatment, liquid content. Then i blow dry when it is about 90% dry using a heat serum. I prefer mist, its light. Oil weights my hair down.
Great video ❤. Btw I’m not sure if you base your scalp but I have sensitive scalp and before I hit the salon I base my scalp the night before and I also put some grease on the relaxed ends to prevent run off. My stylist uses Affirm sensitive scalp lye relaxer and I have not gotten scalp burns in 2 years. Just like the other ladies have mentioned I do limit my caffeine intake, I do not workout that day and I limit any kind of manipulation to my scalp or hair all week. A week prior I use a clarifying shampoo and do a protein treatment followed by moisturizing treatment then leave the hair alone for the week. (Low buns etc) when I started my Healthy healthy relaxed hair journey in Oct 2022 I started with 12 week stretches and slowly worked my way up to 16 weeks last year 2023. Good luck with your 2024 healthy hair journey and YES Please add moisturizing and sealing to your routine as well as regular moisturizing deep conditioning treatments. 👍🏾😮
This was a really great video. I think we're constantly learning what works and what doesn't for our hair, which is why it's a journey. I'm not someone who moisturizes and seals, but I definitely moisturize my ends and I really like the amika overnight hydration treatment because it can be put on wet or dry hair and it keeps your hair moisturized for at 3-4 days. I appreciate you being so candid. 💜
for one if you going to relaxed make sure you havnt been scratching on your scalp , putting relaxer directly on scalp and if taking down hair style wait a day or 2 before relaxing aswell
I started my healthy hair journey 2 years ago . 2023 my hair was the longest its ever been in my life. 4 months ago I decided to relax and now I have to cut of all my length cause its so badly see through and thin. My ponytail is so thin. I'm so heartbroken iv come along way and now I hv to start all over again 💔
I also relaxed my hair about 4 months ago, but it’s puffy/fluffy, dry and brittle. People say it looks nice but I don’t like it. I’m not sure what to do with it
This style and length looks great on you though. I'd say strengthen it yes, but enjoy it. Its a very flattering look. I went through the same recently and trying to do the same. Hair stylists just tend not too be very gentle with our type of hair. Sometimes you have to just show them how you want your hair handled or get up from the chair. All the best.
I went natural in 2022 and then went back to relaxers after a year. It's been 6 months relaxed and I can tell you my hair is breaking and I'm debating whether to go back to natural or even texlax that's how bad my hair is breaking. In my year of being natural, I had absolutely zero issues with breakage and my natural hair just retained length easier. relaxed hair requires more work to retain length for sure.
There are many reasons for excessive shedding ( over processing, lack of moisture retention, your hair being weaker than you thought so the chemical breakdown makes it crumble) just try to retain moisture, try some tea rinses etc
Hiii Tshego Happy Sunday Loved today's video and Thank you for being so transparent about your relaxed hair journey Don't worry your hair will grow back in no time We love you so much ❤❤❤❤❤
Great Video as always... Guys be super careful with which hairstylists you choose. They can make or break (literally) your hair. Some just want the money and are not educated about haircare. From the tools used to products. Sigh..... And you can easily tell when you educate yourself about your hair.
I just wanted to share a few points with you and the family to avoid breakage. 1. Protect your previously relaxed hair with conditioner /castor oil 2. Use K18 after your relaxer 3. Use a cholesterol treatment, either it is Dark and Lovely or Ors.Relaxer hair love, love the product, and 4. Lastly, moisterise and seal with an oil moisturizer of your choice but be light handed. Good luck, ladies. We are all on a healthy, relaxed hair journey ❤
Personally your hair is not bad it will grow back. As for relaxers i heard the mizani hair cream relaxer is comforting on the scalp. I use the dark &lovely protein relaxer which is so comfy on the scalp as well and its mot so harsh on the hair. So you'll chose which. Mina im still gonna follow you we all learn when it comes to our hair and commit yhose mistakes so yha
Pro tip ...if you don't oil your scalp then use baby powder on the partings before the relaxer...trust me, baby powder or powder in general just does magic , haven't been burnt in years
Ncccaw. So sorry to hear about your hair. 2024 is your comeback year! I just want to know. How many weeks post relaxer do you recommend getting braids for someone whose hair grows quite fast like yours ?
Girl, relatable. I overdid protein treatments coz I was obsessed with putting back the protein the relaxer is breaking 🤣 big mistake coz my hair got so brittle and broke like there is no tomorrow 😅 I am cutting off the ends little by little but I am this close to just going for a long bob from waist length 😮💨
Oh nooo !!! You can use a strong clarifying shampoo to strip the excess protein and do deep conditioning treatments every 5 days or so. It should bring your hair back to how it was ! Talking from experience 🥲 Also on RUclips , many people have protein overload and fixed it without chopping it off 😊 Hope this helps x
Gurlll I'm currently fighting to regain my length and thickness . Also went to the beach and got some chlorine in there now I'm under the weather with no energy for my hair 😅😅
I don't like salon because I have seen them use the same tools on everybody hair without washing them. It can put a fungus in your scalp. Everybody scalp isn't the same even after they wash it.

Right there, maybe you shouldn't go back to them for having to ask for a basic minimum requirement...@michelleej

I'm not someone who moisturizes and seals, but I definitely moisturize my ends and I really like the amika overnight hydration treatment because it can be put on wet or dry hair and it keeps your hair moisturized for at 3-4 days. I appreciate you being so candid. 💜
for one if you going to relaxed make sure you havnt been scratching on your scalp , putting relaxer directly on scalp
and if taking down hair style wait a day or 2 before relaxing aswell
We are in the same place in our relaxed hair journey.
I’m not sure what to do with it
😢Nooooo not you too. The way I was following kaizen's relaxed hair journey, gave me a glimmer of hope for salons. Well😅😅😅 there goes my hope chile😬🐥
Steaming helps with moisture retention
Your hair is still beautiful ❤
Use a curly perm first step it doesnt burn and will straighter your hair like a Care Free Curl Cold Wave Chemical Rearranger and neturalizing shampoo

Happy Sunday
Loved today's video and Thank you for being so transparent about your relaxed hair journey
Don't worry your hair will grow back in no time
We love you so much
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!!
Also a relaxer is R140 , 250 maximum plus a treatment and a trim 😅😅😅 R1K seems hectic are you using mizani?
Great Video as always...
Guys be super careful with which hairstylists you choose. They can make or break (literally) your hair.
Some just want the money and are not educated about haircare. From the tools used to products. Sigh.....
And you can easily tell when you educate yourself about your hair.
Spot on!
I just wanted to share a few points with you and the family to avoid breakage.
1. Protect your previously relaxed hair with conditioner /castor oil
2. Use K18 after your relaxer
3. Use a cholesterol treatment, either it is Dark and Lovely or Ors.Relaxer hair love, love the product, and
4. Lastly, moisterise and seal with an oil moisturizer of your choice but be light handed.
Good luck, ladies. We are all on a healthy, relaxed hair journey ❤
Thank you for sharing this!
Just remember…no lye is easy on the scalp & lye is easy on the hair❣️ use lye and base your scalp ☺️
On my relaxed hair journey and filming it for my RUclips channel. It’s not easy but I’m enjoying taking care of my hair 🙂
I love watching your relaxed hair vids!!
Your hair is so beautiful and long... Love the recent video❤
@@delsynn thank you. I appreciate you 🌸
Have you tried a sensitive/mild relaxer? Everytime I use a normal relaxer I get burnt , since I have switched no burns at all.
Yes, I get burned with both.
My stylist said at least wait a week post relaxer but I think a bit longer…
Thank you☺️
Girl, relatable.
Ahhhh Brenda 😂😂😩😩😩😩 this journey is not for the faint of heart! You’ll be back to waist length in no time ♥️
Oh nooo !!! You can use a strong clarifying shampoo to strip the excess protein and do deep conditioning treatments every 5 days or so. It should bring your hair back to how it was !
Talking from experience 🥲
Also on RUclips , many people have protein overload and fixed it without chopping it off 😊
Hope this helps x
Relatable I just big chopped
Japanese type is thio based vs calcium or sodium hydroxide system
The only thing that damages the hair is the relaxer itself..no moisturizer will defeat or reverse the damage caused by relaxers...
Really like it❤😊
Hi Kaizen have you consided Texture Release ?
Gurlll I'm currently fighting to regain my length and thickness . Also went to the beach and got some chlorine in there now I'm under the weather with no energy for my hair 😅😅
Most salon workers don’t care and don’t know wtf they’re doing. I keep away from salons as much as possible .
True that's why I brought my own hair tools and taught myself to do my own hair
I don't like salon because I have seen them use the same tools on everybody hair without washing them. It can put a fungus in your scalp. Everybody scalp isn't the same even after they wash it.
This is a good point... I share similar sentiments.
Erm. The hair looks amazing though 😅 confused
