We are so excited to share this treasure with you! The Pillow Thompson House 1897 is an amazing example of Victorian Queen Anne design.
This exquisite home is one of the finest examples of George Barber architecture in Arkansas. The plans were purchased from the Sears and Roebuck catalog, but the materials were sourced from the builders own lumber mills. The materials inside are gorgeous examples of Arkansas pine, oak and poplar. The transoms over the pocket doors have always contained burled wood, never glass.
This home stayed in the Thompson family until it was donated to the University of Arkansas Community College of Phillips county. The historic home has undergone an extensive restoration thanks to generous donations from donors, and now serves as a community event center and is open for tours Wednesday-Saturday from 10-4.
Hopefully if you ever come to see our Helen in Helena you'll stop in and say hello to tour guide Raymond and let him show you the splendor of the Pillow-Thompson historic home! www.pccua.edu/community/pillo...

This house is gorgeous! Love the Queen Anne style. It is utterly amazing how they crafted these homes back in the day. They had style back then and things were meant to stand the test of time. Today's style is ordinary and boring. Give me the old days and an eye for detail any day over the modern styling! Love the show!

Well, the post WW2 " Baby Boom " and influx of soldiers returning to the US triggered an era of mass produced, cheaper housing. Ever since the 1950s, the standard "American dream" has been owning a cookie cutter suburban house with the white picket fencing, etc and the advent of the thirty year mortgage encouraged people to go into debt.

Victorian is not my personal taste, but this is beautiful. It is one of the few Victorian homes that did not creep me out. Maybe because the woodwork was a warm caramel instead of the dark mahogany you usually see. Also, the wallpaper was not overwhelming and was confined to a few rooms. Most of the walls were solid color and very calming and cozy. The tour and narration was excellent and made the whole place seem alive.

Adjusted for inflation $6,500 USD in 1897 is worth $239,396.57 USD in 2023.
Still a great deal considering that today $239,396.57 in the San Francisco Bay Area would get you a 1,700 sq. ft empty lot, or part of a condo, or a collapsed 2 story home all in a neighborhood built over a former toxic waste dump with high crime rates.

I loved the tour through the house. When the gentleman opened the closet door and showed the lady of the houses clothes I cried thinking about her. It must have been wonderful growing up in that beautiful house. I loved her bedroom the most. It looked just like a bedroom that I would love to sleep in if I lived there. Thank you for sharing.

There is a gorgeous George Barber house in Knoxville not far from us, it was almost lost but fortunately I think it has been saved.
