Nobody really mentions that if Kyoshi can show the future, why didn’t she show Roku the future of the airbenders being wiped out when he was alive and had a chance to take out Sozin ?
The craziest part is that Sokka's sexism is only a thing for the first FOUR episodes of the original series. It's brought up in the first episode, becomes a plot point in the fourth episode, and is basically RESOLVED by the end of that same episode. I don't ever recall him having an issue with Aunt Wu for being female, or agreeing with Paku's sexist beliefs, or ever looking down on Toph, or Azula and her crew. And Kyoshi Warriors is the SECOND episode of the Netflix series! They literally couldn't bring themselves to let a main character have a flaw for ONE EPISODE.
I can see someone making the argument that Sokka's sexism is what saved the world because without it, Katarra wouldn't have gotten mad enough to have a great burst of water bending that freed the air bender.
Like Amber said. It was sokkas sexism that put everything into motion. Katara fighting her brother's sexist ideas. It's what freed aang in the first place.
@@karlozfox I understand the philosophy behind the argument so well people can't figure out whether I'm against it or for it. This is an excellent and unintended compliment that I have received, thank you.
i just realized something. You talking about how Suki messed with Sokka a bit in season 2 when seeing her for the first time since he first met her, and him not recognizing her without makeup. That scene won't work now if they adapt it since Sokka has already seen her without makeup in this.
They should’ve had Katara steal the water bending scroll from Kyoshi island. Aang could’ve had a confrontation with her but she uses the reasoning, “it belongs to my tribe and they stole it” similar to the original. Maybe she tells Aang she’ll give it back but doesn’t, and then the mayor finds out that she stole from them and goes to kick them out. But wait! While they’re leaving they see Zhao and Zuko so Katara redeems herself by fighting for the village or being the one who warns them. Subplots aren’t that hard guys.
Modern writers need to learn that SHOWING is not the same thing as ACCEPTING. Showing Sokka being sexist is not the same thing as saying its okay to be sexist. _Especially_ since the entire point of Sokka's sexism in the original is to challenge the idea. There isn't a single moment in the entire show where someone gets away with being sexist. Whenever it happens they immediately oppose it, or shame the person doing it. Its ALWAYS portrayed as a negative trait. The original Avatar is one of the most anti-sexist shows I've ever seen. Not only does it say its wrong to treat women badly, it does so in a way that doesn't actively turn the hate towards men. So many modern movies and shows will actively hate men and tell the audience that women are BETTER. That's not equality, that's revenge. You don't fix prejudice by flipping it around to the other side.
Yep. Like Suki has a good line about it right at the beginning when Sokka tells her he was viewing her as a girl rather than a warrior. Sukki actually corrects him still. “I am a warrior. But I’m also a girl.” The two are not mutually exclusive after all and she still gets to be girly and feminine whilst also being an absolute badass. And thats the thjng with avatar. The characters are layered and different. Ty Lee, Mai, Katara, Sukki, Toph…. All of them so different as women and so differently strong yet not less or more or better or worse than the rest. Ty Lee is the most airheaded person ever… yet she is also smart in a different way and a very strong opponent despite not being a bender. Stuff like that. Hollywood is missing that mark though. Same with Annabeth in the percy jackson show. Girl characters arent allowed to have flaws. Well, in general characters because hollywood is afraid that even showcasing bad behaviour as bad behaviour will be taken as if its promoting it or condoning it. And sadly there are people who actually do think like that. Ive met people who looked at movies where sexist or even creepy guys were portrayed (and not even remotely in a good way, said movies were MEANT to make you uncomfortable and look at the creeps as bad) and they declared that said movies or series are creepy guys’ fantasies and it appeals to them. Like… no. You were supposed to hate it. But these people think that they are the only ones hating it while the movie is advocating for it, which it isnt. Same as making Sokka sexist as per his actual character and rhen unlearning it. There wouldve been people who wouldve thought it was promoting sexism, when its the polar opposite since he’s shamed for it constantly until he unlearns it.
I’d like add on that even though the fire sages ended up betraying the avatar, that was only AFTER they felt they were abandoned after the avatar disappeared for 100 years. It’s almost like the directors didn’t watch the show with intent because although it was a small detail mentioned in one episode, you can’t let things like this slip by if you truly care about the story being told.
. For 14 years the world was grieving after the creation of the last airbender. But everything changed once netflix arose to create another live action. But i believe that critics can save the world from the attack of pointless live action remakes.
Writing, Direction, Production, Acting. Long ago, these four elements lived together in harmony. But everything changed when the live action adaptations attacked! 😂
8:11 SEE!!! I completely agree with that. That's WHY the southern water tribe souldn't be a stationery tribe. It make sense in the original because they are a small village that EVENTUALLY they would have to move or risk getting found. The live action version doesn't show how much the 100 year war HAD affected them. They're living it up with impressive igloos walls and fishing gear like the war has not happened and they weren't raided at all. Nor making the men of the tribe leave to join the war 2 years prior.
It's fascinating how this show is more sexist than the original. Love to see Suki reduced to a girl in love with the first boy from the outside world she meets :/
Remember the days when the characters would tag along with the main character because they were FRIENDS and it was THE RIGHT THING TO DO? Now apparently they need some ulterior motive like learning to water bend... Its a means to an end. "Everyone's got an angle" apparently.
Tbf, even in the original, katara s connection with aang steemed from her will to become a waterbender. First she asked him for training and then proposed they go together in the North. They did have a lot of other bonding moments though (penguin riding, rescuing, the southern air temple etc...) What the netflix lacks is all the "downtime" making characters interact and bond.
AYO, I just found out something, Other than the Gaang themselves, we never see any other kids bending elements. The original show was full of little boys and girls bend elements and playing with one another
the kiyoshi ambush is like the wierdest scene in the entire show! there is no choreography, all of them just stand around and look concerned instead of reacting to the fact that they are getting attacked. the acting is hilariously bad and the dialog is so cringy its hard to find the right words for it. its one of the scenes that u can just show without context and anyone will laugh. kinda like the chase scene in kenobi where leia tried to escape the bounty hunters
The whole point of season one is showing aangs age, immaturity and refusal of the call. He doesnt want to be the avatar, he wants to have fun, he doesnt want to have the responsibility and hes deflecting his pain and grief from the loss of his monk family into procrastinating. Through the episodes, aang learns alot of life lessons and honestly its my fav season for aangs development.
Aang doesn't necessarily refuse the call to be the Avatar, he did in The Storm flashback, but the circumstances were different back then. Warriors of Kyoshi shows him being perfectly content in his role as the Avatar since he gets admiration from kids his age instead of rejection, and he's so eager to learn as much as he can as fast as he can that he rushes and learns firebending out of order, while Netflix Aang is too reluctant to even waterbend. Not to say that Aang doesn't undergo a lot of character growth in the first season, but this idea that he was always refusing the call to action is just not true. He responded to the call to action to do his Avatar duties such as when he helped the village being attacked by Hei Bai since the Avatar is the big spirit bridge and all that, he just didn't know what he was doing and wasn't in a rush until he got advice and direction from Roku. Aang's characterization in this new series is going to be a big talking point going forward, but I can't equate the arcs that the two characters go on at all, they're just completely different.
@@FishStickOnAStick i didnt say always refusing the call, and yes, i agree with you, he does take his avatar role seriously (albiet clumsily) but i was speaking in response to the show in which they wanted Aang to feel the role of the avatar and for him to solely take that role seriously. He doesn't soley refuse the call, as well as he doesnt soley take his avatar duties seriously ( as he goes to kyoshi island to ride the giant serpent) Whereas i think his procastination is a huge part of his growth in S1 not just for him but also for katara as we get to know who she is as we discover her neuturing side, she is able to help him explore his emotional wounds n why he deflects. i just felt that that part of Aangs personality was missing in live action. I felt that they missed the part where hes just a kid. Being the avatar is a huge burdon. Its even worse if you belived you already failed by sleeping for 100 years. I think the animated show provides an interesting question. "your the savior of the world, but your also 12 years old, what would a kid do?"
I actually didnt mind Zuko upset Aang ran away because, from Zuko's perspective, the last time he refused to fight and ran away (at least in the animated version) his father permanently scarred his face and banished him from the nation. Zuko's anger towards Aang running away scott-free without honourably fighting him is Zuko projecting his inner hatred towards himself onto Aang, as well as showing a cultural divide between the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads
Season 2 & 3 of this disaster show is on the way boys & girls!! Strap in for a bumpy narrative and visual ride lmao! Also the constant cuts between the animation and the Netflix show just shows you how STARKLY different even the visual representation of the world is. Bright and vibrant versus dark and muddy looking.

5:40 the drive of the first couple of episodes is actually pretty clear in the original series imo, Katara wants to learn waterbending and proposes Aang to do so too. But it's obviously a very long trip, so they stop to have side quests which ultimately provides some urgency and worldbuilding because they see the effects of the war even in the most insignificant places. The problem is the adaptation's Katara has no drive. She is going along rather than leading the charge and for what? Protecting Aang? How? Oh she is already a master waterbender, right!!
I like how detailed these videos are, even covering things like naming and the background music. Also, I think you are an absolutely certified ATLA fan and this is prominent in how you not just analyze the show but the jokes bruh, like wowwy, "Zuko, I don't care what others say about you, I think you're pretty smart" and the Ty Lee childhood crush, pheww damn she hot, I be simpin though I feel no shame in that, anyways things like, as mentioned, your detailed analyzation and the running jokes you make are what makes you truly unique. Keep up the work, hope you now know that people do acknowledges the little things you slide in everynow and then.
24:00 dead on!! The beauty of ATLA is that, it provides lessons. Not only the fire nation has faults. The gang faces issues deep within the society everyway they go which makes it more adult than Netflix version.
Glowing representations of the Avatar: One explanation which is a bit of a stretch but does make the most sense given what we see in the animated show is this. Aang had not connected properly with the Raava spirit. Therefore, when he manifested the spirit under the water, he was just connecting with a fraction. or the spirit was forcing itself into Aang to save him. He wasn't connecting with the previous Avatar spirits, and they weren't aware of his presence. Following that, when he waterbended on Zuko's ship, it was a similar situation - a very brief exchange that was barely tapping into the power and didn't have enough gravitas to register outside of his little spiritual bubble. Then he goes back his home which is ruined, and finds his friend who is a long-dead corpse. He's in a spiritual place, with significance to both the Avatar and himself. Instead of escaping after what could have been hours after Zuko captured him, or after however long he was struggling against the storm, he is very suddenly shown that, yes, they are all dead, and he is alone. It's a very shocking thing, and he was left open and vulnerable, like a wound. This allowed him to truly open up similar to how Korra did at the end of Book of Air, the Raava spirit was able to truly invest in him, and their combined Avatar energy was truly able to flow, and that is why that is the first time all of the representations light up for Aang. It's a li'l clunky, it requires a bit of a stretch, but it does fit with the world's lore and also explains why we see what we see in the order we see it in the animated show.
Suki clearly has lighter brown hair, not black hair like the actress cast in this live action farce. Also, WHERE ARE HER BLUE EYES?! COLOR CONTACTS EXIST.

22:08 I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Warriors, is in fact, Kyoshi/Warriors, or as I've recently taken to calling them, Kyoshi plus Warriors. Warriors are not just a fighting force unto themselves, but rather an integral part of the Kyoshi system made formidable by the Kyoshi core techniques, combat strategies, and essential warrior training comprising a full Kyoshi's defense. Many allies of Avatar Aang encounter the Kyoshi Warriors every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Kyoshi which is widely known today is often called Warriors, and many of its allies are not aware that it is basically the Kyoshi system, developed by the Kyoshi Order. There really are Kyoshi Warriors, and these warriors are fiercely dedicated, but they are just a part of the system they belong to. Warriors are the guardians: the elite protectors in the system that uphold peace and justice. Warriors are an essential part of the Kyoshi's defense, but incomplete by themselves; they can only fulfill their purpose in the context of the complete Kyoshi system. Warriors are normally found in combination with the Kyoshi way of life: the whole system is basically Kyoshi with Warriors added, or Kyoshi/Warriors. All the so-called Kyoshi tribes are really tribes of Kyoshi/Warriors!
15:00 No I’m pretty sure that’s the truth… why do you think were shown them glowing and thus people reacting to them as if it was the first time they’ve seen it in episode 3 and not episode 2.:

@Eh......... But my point is that every kid in the City Of God was perfect. Which contradicts his point. I can mention many other productions with perfect kid actors. I am sure you can too...
Honestly, how does it work? How is an airbender teaching a water bender how to water bend? Is that how it works? I never new a mason could teach a carpenter carpentry. 9:16
14.54 the first time I saw that scene the way I understood it was that aang avatar spirit sent out that signal on purpose . He was so and Angry about the genocide and fire nation war he had to put the nations on notice like “I’m back”
I kinda liked the Water Scroll change, but you bring up some good points. However I do think it makes more sense that an adult would be in charge of Kyioshi instead of some kids- Unless the island has a Lord of The Flies situation going on... On the issue of performancs, I know people want to be nice because they are kids, but we've gotten so many good child performances lately (including Netflix's own Stranger Things) that I feel we shouldn't make excuses anymore. One note I'll say (speaking from experience) is that bad acting is usually on the actor. It may sometimes be the fault of bad directing, but producers usually don't have anything to do with that. The only way an exec could be responsible for a sucky performance is if they insisted on keeping a bad actor on the project when the director would rather have someone else.
Its unrelated to this particular video but I wanted to state how much I appreciate the fact that someone out there hates "The Story of Her Holding An Orange" as much as I do.
I was just watching part 2 of this review, paused it, came back, and was suddenly unable to watch it because Netflix gave it a copyright strike. Booooo, fuck Netflix, I overall hate what they did with this reboot and them overpolicing reviews of it is trash garbage 🗑
The netflix show missing the humor, and thats why it will never compare to the animated show. the humor is the soul of the show without it its just a hallow shell
Actually think people give the first season to much criticism in terms of the quote on quote filler. The winter solstice episodes are like 6-7 episodes thats not even the half way point of the first season which is 20 episodes. I do think the pacing could’ve been a bit better but at the same time aang spending the beginning goofing off and visiting different places is good world building because we actually come back to some of these places later. If I were to do a live action I wouldn’t cut any of this out just pace better then the original did or at least find a proper way to corporate it.Also that fuck you at 25:26 felt personal asl😂
As much love or hate as it gets, I think Netflixs Castlevania and Live AtLA have a very similar issue that put me off from watching it. Everyone talks like they are in group therapy. No one is experiencing any real, in the moment emotion. They are just talking about them or their past experiences. Now It's not a bad thing to have characters talk like that, or be a bit self reflective, but it's all the time. I mean just look at how Aang and Zuko talk to each other in Netflix adaption of the Blue Spirit. The cartoon versions would NEVER talk like that to each other pre the Finale of Season 3. And if they are going to be that aware and self-reflective, could please, for the love of Christ move it along.
I’m confused sokka is right though men are better at hunting and fighting. That’s why they have always done the fighting and the hunting all throughout history!?
No. Actors should be held to a standard. They’re getting paid to do a job and we are paying to see it. Bad directors do not always mean bad performances, and there are still actors that no matter who directs them, they will suck. I don’t give a fuck if it’s mean, they got paid how much? We’re paying how much per month, per ticket? Stop letting shit slide cuz it’s a wittle mean oooooo. Grow up. Have standards. If we all stopped letting shit slide then things would get better. Demand better not only for yourself but for the rest of the world. Lowering our standards will only drag us down, when we need to be moving forward and up.
Honestly, calling Sokka's behavior "sexist" discredits actual sexism. He's just a kid. It's not like he actually hates females and is actively sabotaging their ability to have rights or anything. He just thinks boys are stronger/smarter/whatever because he's a dumb kid. Plus he's never been anywhere outside his tribe, where he's been the alpha male out of necessity.
it's still sexism, just very mild sexism, as was taught to him by how water tribe society works. he is not a raging misogynist though, you're right there
It is still sexist, but I agree that he was just a kid and a product of necessity and his culture. I remember thinking "oh no wonder Sokka is like that" when they arrived in the North Pole.
Dude what are you talking about?? Sexism comes in many different forms. The concept of sexism can't be downplayed by calling someone out for their sexism because you don't deem it that serious. In fact, his so called "childlike" sexism is something common with most people that grows worse into adulthood for a lot of people. I don't know if you realise this, but believing boys are "stronger/smarter/whatever" is in fact, sexist, even for children.
Dont bother, “sexism” is always a considered a net negative instead of a neutral descriptor. People will crucify you for not siding with this. Sokka is sexist in the sense that he believes in traditional patriarchal roles. This is not negative or positive, so don’t feel the need to explain it to people, you don’t owe anyone that. It is based on the objective fact that men are consistently physically stronger than women and inclined to combat/physical roles. Oh no, the horrors of reality…
oh gr8 another video essay that has nothing to add to the conversation. i swtfg you can't find just regular videos from the cartoon anymore, everyone feels the need to have multi part hours long breakdowns of this mediocre adaptation. "watch the cartoon"... thats all the thoughts needed.
I’m really getting sick of characters/societies in media that are clearly styled a certain way on purpose just being undone for the sake of real world modern sensibilities. Like yeah, Sokka is a misogynist loser. It’s very understandable why he is this way. He grew up in a rural village where the sex and gender roles are very sharply defined, and he probably only ever met about 70 people in his life before Aang showed up. You can’t just pretend he’s something different from his surroundings when that’s literally all he knows at this point. It’s stupid. And more importantly, it’s not real life anyway.
Look I’m not a Netflix avatar defender but…. Most of the complaints (especially in the early parts of the video ) are quite bad They seem to want to paint the show in an unnecessarily negative light in situations where it shouldn’t. Don’t get me wrong the show is bad, but you gave really dumb or over exaggerated reasons to say it is in parts that aren’t that bad. At some points even taking context in wrong ways, it def got a lot better near the end of the vid but the start was rough
10:00 gran gran giving her the scroll is fine. it's fine. it's literally fine. your nit picking level is over 9,000 on this one. for real. and your questions are bad. she can have the scroll cause her mom had the scroll. her motive for keeping it from her was so that katara wouldnt advance her bending and bring more attention to her and the village in an unsafe period. its really not that complex. (ok you called out your own nit picking at some point, so i can give you a partial pass)

As you could tell, by the lines of the sage in the video, the fire sages at the start of the war were loyal to the avatar. In time they were corrupted, but by the time of Sozin they still were good. So no, it's not bad faith, you just need to understand some extra context of the lines. Sozin shouldn't be talking like that in front of them 100 years ago, because at that time they weren't loyal to him (as far as the cartoon canon states, NATLA could be different)

You’re right about the fact that its possible the Avatar’s disappearance is what lead to the cartoon sages to be corrupted. Its the matter of factly way he said there’s no way a Fire Sage would betray the Avatar, but they’re not in fact incorruptible

Maybe she tells Aang she’ll give it back but doesn’t, and then the mayor finds out that she stole from them and goes to kick them out. But wait! While they’re leaving they see Zhao and Zuko so Katara redeems herself by fighting for the village or being the one who warns them. Subplots aren’t that hard guys.
the only good thing to come from this show is reminding me to rewatch the original
This a thousand times
I agree! I’m so tired of characters not being allowed to have any flaws or growth.
@@pcrassen4975 Hollywood needs to learn that PORTRAYING is not the same thing as SUPPORTING.
If I was the Avatar, I'd want to hide for 100 year if it meant not seeing the Netflix version.

Sokka has unlocked his secret woman respecting bending technique in this show
Feminist rizz bending.
They did have a lot of other bonding moments though (penguin riding, rescuing, the southern air temple etc...)
What the netflix lacks is all the "downtime" making characters interact and bond.
💯 true, it was an overrated and useless scene to the entire plot
He doesn't soley refuse the call, as well as he doesnt soley take his avatar duties seriously ( as he goes to kyoshi island to ride the giant serpent)
Whereas i think his procastination is a huge part of his growth in S1 not just for him but also for katara as we get to know who she is as we discover her neuturing side, she is able to help him explore his emotional wounds n why he deflects. i just felt that that part of Aangs personality was missing in live action.
Yeah too bad, as you pointed out, they made zuko fight his father instead making it obsolete.
Doesn’t inspire confidence in the writing when two of the recurring romances for the story are now present, and the showrunners seem downright allergic to writing affection in any form.
I would be allergic too, If I had to write something as awkwardly out of place as Kataang

Nono, you see, every episode of a show has to be an hour long now, to show how cool and cinematic the 6-8 episode event format is. We can’t have…GASP!…actual television length episodes!
seriously, it kills me that so many people act like this has pacing issues because they had time constraints. their issue wasnt that they didnt have time, its that they misused the time they had by throwing out important story beats and characters moments to focus on shit that doesnt matter. youre not convincing me a "grown up" netflix show has more time constraint issues than the original nickelodeon show.
I'm so happy that you posted this, I was starting to get worried that part of three would never come😅
5:40 the drive of the first couple of episodes is actually pretty clear in the original series imo, Katara wants to learn waterbending and proposes Aang to do so too.
It's this Pokemon music in the background? My nostalgia is tingling

Wouldn't an ostrich chicken just be like, a Cassowary?
I think the statues only glowed because aang released such a powerful burst of energy when coming out of the iceberg.

you're right totally forgot about the Kyoshi island theme
An adult was in charge of Kiyoshi. Suki was the leader of the warriors, but she wasn't in charge of the whole village
Its unrelated to this particular video but I wanted to state how much I appreciate the fact that someone out there hates "The Story of Her Holding An Orange" as much as I do.

Plus he's never been anywhere outside his tribe, where he's been the alpha male out of necessity.
it's still sexism, just very mild sexism, as was taught to him by how water tribe society works. he is not a raging misogynist though, you're right there
Thank you. "Sexism" is a loaded word that makes what the cartoon was doing sound WAAAY worse than what was actually happening.
You should do each episode.

Its really weird to criticize the fire sages thing when you show footage of Fire sages who had betrayed the Avatar. Pretty bad faith
@@nicovelardita8619that’s actually such a good point. I honestly didn’t get the criticism but yeah. You’re right about the fact that its possible the Avatar’s disappearance is what lead to the cartoon sages to be corrupted. Its the matter of factly way he said there’s no way a Fire Sage would betray the Avatar, but they’re not in fact incorruptible
I probably should have added the line where Shyu explains that the Fire Sages grew disillusioned with the Avatar after waiting for so long for the sake of context, but I wasn't sure how necessary that was.
@@john52933 It's moreso about how the Fire Sages of Sozin's time would never betray the Avatar; sure, 100 years later, the descendants would be pissed, understandably so, but for the people who likely helped serve Roku? Fourth option was actually Zuko defeating the avatar in combat and capturing him lmao you think he wanted to die?? No he wanted to face the great warrior to defeat him and prove himself. Okay man. We get it. You hate this new series but there is no reason for you to do 8 episodes of just belittling the series. We all love the original avatar and this new version has its flaws but the people working behind it truly are trying to tell a different story than the original. There is every reason to do all 8 episodes. The new series just gets that much wrong (jk. Sorta 😅) . I'm actually finding these very educational when it comes to what makes good writing (and it's making the original cartoon look even smarter than I realized, which is pretty cool) Just saying it failed so let's move on, isn't very useful.
"stop hating what I like"
If they're trying to tell a different story, they should be telling a different story instead of poorly adapting an already told story
mate there's still plenty of issues with the live action and people are allowed to talk about it lmfao just because you liked it doesn't mean everyone needs to agree
Well if they're trying to tell a different story than the original, why is so much of it just the original but bad? Why not just have an entire story based on the political intrigue of the Fire Nation royal children? A series about Kyoshi? Roku? Yangchen? Why do we need to constantly gut the original characters to make it work within the confines of Live Action?
I was laughing at the kyoshi spirit puppet like oh yes let me show you what to do while I do everything
So I like the fact aang just for no reason knows what to tell katara how to water bend even though your an air bender and yet you don't choose to learn how to bend water at all
If the Avatar can just do that and have all the bending skills of the previous Avatar, then why does Aang need to learn or do anything? Why can't Kyoshi or Roku just take over for him and beat up Ozai? It brings up too many questions, its a huge lore inconsistency.
