- Only the best military age musicians of the United States are selected to attend The Armed Forces School of Music located in Little Creek Virginia. An intense and rigorous 6 months of training teaches young Marines and Sailors what it takes to be a well balanced military musician and warrior. This school is also home to the Army/National Guard S.O.M. in their own 10 week training program.
I was at LIttle Creek in 1967, many fond memories.
Graduated Oct 1997 U.S. Army just missed 3.0 with a 2.97....was one of the best 6 months ever.
Thanks for the memories.....
I was on the staff at the Army Element SOM from 81-83. The AIT course there crammed two years of college--level performance and theory in six months. I had nothing but great respect for the soldier-musicians going through that course-not only Army but the Navy and Marines.
Army F1 course graduate here. My class started Aug 1980...seems not so long ago. It's so unreal to live this life of music and throughout my career I run into military musicians out doing gigs still today, just like me here on Panama City Beach, FL. Jamming, loving my country, my military roots and the music I was honored to study there at SOM! God bless the current students; ya'll embrace the experience because it's a wonderful memory before you can even imagine it.
Joe, this is the top "AFSOM" video on RUclips. You did a great job editing...why don't you make more videos!?
Wooooow how I don`t miss that place, but still had some badass memories. Great post
I don’t miss it one bit either…
Retired Marine musician here. Went through the Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Courses at the SOM. Lots of fond and crazy memories. Learned a lot. But this is not a place for "only the best military age musicians" go. There's a lot of marginal players that go there.
My ex-husband and I went here in January of 1998 for AIT. Since we were both prior service and just changing MOS’s, we were allowed to live in a nearby apartment. I hate to say that I don’t remember much of our 6 months ago…
That mess hall brings back memories!!! My husband and I went to the school at the same time (we were allowed to stay off base because we were both prior service and we were married…) and I became pregnant while we were there (great way to freak out the d I’ll sergeants!!!) Anyway, I had ABSOLUTELY THE WORST case of morning sickness (at least I thought it was)… one morning I felt pretty decent and decided to have breakfast. I got about 2-3 feet out of the mess hall and EVERYTHING came right back up… in front of the drill sergeants… who were already freaked out because I was pregnant. They told me to go home and rest
The clinic also brings back memories. I went through AIT when pregnancy blood tests were generally used by the military. I was SICK and had NO idea that I was pregnant. I ended up getting poked by 16 people (they were medic trainees) before a nurse stepped in and put an end to it.
I couldn’t even walk past the little diner (did it have a bowling alley?) with hurling…
My grandparents lived three miles down the road from there.
My husband and I were sent to the School of Music in 1988, shortly after we were married. Three months into the program, I became pregnant with our first baby. I remember one morning I actually felt like eating after days of morning sickness so we went to the mess hall. I got about three steps out of the mess hall and everything came right back up. Since we were married, we had a small apartment off base. I played flute/piccolo and he played clarinet/saxophone. I remember Jimmy's, too...
Many people had great experiences there. I did not. 😢
seemed like almost every weekend that I got stuck on SP duty as an Army E-4 there. best thing about being an E-4 there was that I got my own room.
Wow, that brought back a lot of memories! I was a Marine trombonist there in 1993. Thank you joeVARADI for making this video!
Based on the music, this appears to be an institution w/ a strong jazz emphasis: My kind of school!
I was surprised to find that Army musical training had been reduced to 10 weeks from six months. In talking with officials at the school today, I found that this change happened about two years ago. When I was at the school twenty years ago, we were there for six months along with sailors and marines, and were in classes and bands together. The only training that we had separately was drill band and PT.
Oour son is in the school of music right now. going to graduate in Sept. He is 25 and one of the older marines but he said that there are older ones than him. You should go for it....
I was a Marine trumpet player there in 1983. I remember Jimmy's too - got my first Singapore Sling there, lol. 3 of those and I was drunk on my ass, hehehe. Good times there. I heard that Bill Watrous went through not too long before me - best trombone player ever.
Watrous actually attended when the SOM was was in DC in 1957
@@TheJunebug65 The legend told by my instructors was that he was told to go warm up while they all stood outside with their jaws on the deck. They walked in and said he was going straight through to his base without having to go through the school.....
Just joined on Bass guitar 🎹🎸🤙🏾
Jimmy's bar still across the street? Was a good place to go after grinding out the practice hours...
'93 wow, I was learning how to poop! Went there in 2010. And for playing Trombone in the Marines you get 100 youtube points.
if i were that man eating at the end i would be mad i dont like people recording me eating
my girlfriend is planning on joining the army band got any advice for her
omg
Is there a weight room there? Weird question I know
Yes there is, my daughter is there right now.
Is this a Charlie Parker record? What's the name of the song?
It's actually from a J.J. Johnson record. The song's called Jay Bird.
Is there a Strings program?
There used to be, back during WWII, but it's gone now. The President's Own Marine Band had an orchestra
