I haven’t play the tuba since high school 2012-2015. I recently went to MEPS for my physical exam. I’m highly interested in joining the Army Band but nervous because of my experience. This video really motivated me to do the audition.
Last I heard, once you get your civilian clothing and can leave base, that's when you can see visitors. I bieve you get your civilian clothes around week 5 or 6
The curriculum has changed several times over the years. I believe the navy/marines is still a 6 month school. Some of my older coworkers also went to AIT when it was much longer.
The school has plenty of gear for everyone to use. I've never owned my own tuba and have always played on the Army's instruments. You could probably use your own if you could find a way to get it to Virginia Beach.
Army transportation is real weird, so there's no telling. If you do drive, they should pay for your mileage instead of a plane ticket. I think after graduation day they probably don't care a whole bunch what you do to get home.
I believe the Army-wide policy caps new recruits at age 35, but there are certain waivers that you can get depending on the circumstances. A lot of new musicians are older than the average recruit because we often join after doing college, music ed, or transfer from another army job.
During AIT I had my phone and my roommate bought a whole Playstation and TV at the PX to play in the evenings. Whereas basic training is 24/7, AIT schedule is much more like college where after the duty day, you have much more discretionary time and freedom. I remember going over to the library to play video games and watch movies, too.
When I was there, we had several spouses and families visit on the weekends. The installation is open to civilians just like any other post (with visitor's pass etc.). All the students will be living in barracks during training, so families won't be able to stay on site (unless they want to pay for the hotel). But of course wherever you get your permanent assignment after graduation, your family will be moved out there with you.

I'd say go for it. Doesn't cost you anything to audition and get some feedback from the recruiting liaison. You never know until you try
Awww Man, This is my second time watching this and I just realized who you are. Haven't seen you since High School, hope all is well with you.
Thanks dude, you too!
@@relwoodmusic3630 You're welcome!! 🎶
Do you know if they let spouses visit at the army school of music? Or if they let them live on base?

Only 10 weeks? Is that a national guard thing? It was 26 weeks when I went through in 89-90. O2F

When you get placed into an ensemble do they provide you an instrument of your choice?

I was 11B but this is pretty cool man.
We have a couple 11B transfers currently in the Band field, as well as previous truck drivers, signal corps, marines, airmen, etc.
is there an "age limit" to join the army school of music?
