"The Professional" ? Would that be some sort of paper towel product (a la "Bounty") that's arrived on store shelves albeit managing to escape my notice? *role
Rule of thumb I have learned from watching actor/actress interviews over the decades. The more you don't understand the film the more reason to definitely take the role😄😄.
But let's not forget we're looking at it from the hindsight of movies that went on to be made, and were actually good (which is why actors tell these stories of regrets). Imagine all the movies they passed up that ended up bombing horribly, or were never made at all. Certainly in the hundreds or thousands beyond those few that ended up being made and were good.
Ohh Tim Burton films would've prolly been rather different if Gary was in their legacies rather than Johnny! I adore Gary and it would've been interesting to see his take on Edward Scissorhands, but it was for Johnny and I think it's best things worked out as they have! :D this was so interesting to find out tho! Gary being Edward would've suited remarkably well!
I know you wrote this a year ago, but I was thinking that if Gary Oldman had been Tim's muse instead of Johnny, he (Tim) would have a lot more credibility now than he does. I know people love Tim Burton but his adaptations on Charlie and the Chocolate factory and Alice in Wonderland were not successful. I was just musing whether Gary would have brought a more serious and darker tone that Johnny lacked in those two roles? (I love Johnny Depp, don't get me wrong.) Maybe it's just that Tim Burton was so brilliant at creating his own characters and should not have ventured into remake-territory? Anyhow, they also considered Michael Jackson for the role of Edward, so no complaints about the casting they chose lol . Though Gary would have KILLED it.
No offense to Gary, who could have done well in Scissorhands, but I'm so glad it was Depp, because then Burton went on to make Ed Wood and NOBODY could have played that better than Depp.
To think that Sirius Black, Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour and Dukavic from The Hitman's Bodyguard are all the same person leaves me in awe of Gary Oldman's acting prowess.
You forgot Mason Verger in the movie "Hannibal". Anthony Hopkins is amazing and deserves his recent award, but Gary Oldman's performance was the pinnacle of Hannibal. I missed the movie credits didn't know until years later it was him.
Cant blame him for that. I think that must be the most frighting thing as an actor, film is supposed to be visual and then the only thing you really have to go off is a script. Then you might see it one way, the director an other. You might see something amazing that is actually corny and bad when it's visualised, or something bad thats incredible when it's visualised.
One of my favorite interviews with Johnny Depp was a VH1 or MTV interview many years ago where he said he was a huge fan of the “Edward Penishands” movies!
I don’t think Gary would have been a good fit for that role. Johnny Depp at that time had a sensitivity and vulnerability necessary for the part. Gary Oldman is one of the greatest living actors but I can’t picture him as vulnerable or wide eyed innocent. His instincts were spot on about the part if not the movie. ❤️❤️❤️
Sometimes a thing is just so new it’s hard to understand until take a minute. It took me a while to fully understand Aftersun after I saw it and now it’s one of my favourites.

@@EventHorizonPrdctns yes, it is. I guess you can tell is one of one favorite episodes lol
Gary Oldman should had won a academy award from the movie Airforce One. He was one mean and bad dude. His acting was incredible. Also loved him in Immortal Beloved. This actor is a ICON (from 976-CREOLEMAN)!
And he read the script for "tiptoes" and he thought "yeah This I get!"
omfg
Neah, he still didn't get it, but he was like, I'm not ganna make that mistake again xD
Bravo
Gary Oldman is the man... After he played Drexl on True Romance, been a fan ever since
Sit down, grab yourself an egg roll
@@davidbutler1622 They got everything here from a diddled eyed Joe to damned if I know
The Professional is still my favorite roll, sometimes you create a masterpiece near the beginning of being known. Love all his work
"The Professional" ? Would that be some sort of paper towel product (a la "Bounty") that's arrived on store shelves albeit managing to escape my notice?
*role
@@manofiske3318 thanks for being my editor 😁
Rule of thumb I have learned from watching actor/actress interviews over the decades. The more you don't understand the film the more reason to definitely take the role😄😄.
But let's not forget we're looking at it from the hindsight of movies that went on to be made, and were actually good (which is why actors tell these stories of regrets). Imagine all the movies they passed up that ended up bombing horribly, or were never made at all. Certainly in the hundreds or thousands beyond those few that ended up being made and were good.
One of the best actors ever . period.
Still one of my favorite Danny Elfman soundtracks.🎶❄️🌨️💃💓😢
Oldman an Depp, two of my favourite actors ever!
Thank you so much Gary for turning down the role.
It's like when I heard Kevin James talk about passing up playing Leonidas in 300. Could've been good.
Isn't it Kevin James that Joe Rogan always says is a legit mixed martial artist? lol
@Hobo Workforce Union u didn't get the joke
Lol stop bullshitting lol
Apparently there’s one particular movie Kevin Costner _deeply_ regrets passing on:
The Shawshank Redemption
Danielle Palmer ... absolutely beautiful and also your take on this is very well put... ;)
No offense to Gary, who could have done well in Scissorhands, but I'm so glad it was Depp, because then Burton went on to make Ed Wood and NOBODY could have played that better than Depp.
There's no comparison between Oldman and Depp.
@@RobVespa Agreed. Depp is a fine actor but Oldman is on a whole other level.
JVT_RedBaron speaks Well he wasn’t credited at all in the opening credits.
What’s a Drexl?
Gary Oldman is a brilliant actor. Brilliant in State Of Grace & True Romance
This is the first time I have heard Gary Oldman’s real voice and I am so shocked.
Nothing like what I had expected!
Gary Oldman is a brilliant actor. I love his Expectorant Technique 😁
Sean Connery turned down Gandalf is a big blunder. They even offered him 15% of the gross that would have netted him 450 million dollars.
He also turned down Dumbledore
That’s Johnny role. He did a great job my many respects for that guy. Don’t get me wrong Gary is amazing
Respect also for Gary, he didn't just said "it wasn't for me", he admitted that he didn't understand sth.
Gary is a severely underrated actor. He's so good, so diverse and brilliant in every film he does
I wouldn't say he is underrated. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest actors of this age... probably ever.
@@claudemakelele2856 Oh good. He deserves it as much as Daniel Day Lewis, Deniro, Pacino..
I dont think that he is underated at all.
God. Bless you Gary.
Sir Gary Oldman, such a great actor you wouldn't even know this was him.
Tim Burton was not relatively unknown at that point. He already did Beetlejuice and BATMAN
Loved him in The Professional. "EVVERRRYYYYOONE!!!"
Edward Scissorhands is the fist movie 🎦 I ever watched in the theater with my sisters. Great movie
Mine was jurassic park then I hoped over to see the last action hero.
I took my kids to see the ballet and it was Edward Scissorhands. It was amazing. Wish they would do it again
Sometimes a thing is just so new it’s hard to understand until take a minute. It took me a while to fully understand Aftersun after I saw it and now it’s one of my favourites.
doesn't understand Edward Scissorhands yet wears a scarf with a t-shirt. very confused person
He's British. Have you seen how they dressed when they are in Spain?
Some people wear things for pure fashion and not because they have a practical application. It's nothing new.
@@aitortilla5128 good point....
thanks for the clarification.... now go look up "sarcasm"
danashane I like turtles
He’s right, that part wouldn’t have been right for him.
Dep nailed it.
What a plot ! An Avon lady goes around the block selling makeup and finds a guy with scissors for hands in a dark spooky castle and adopts him lol! It’s a classic no matter what.
His role in the Professional was all time great.
This is the most Chameleon like actor I know. I always realize late in his movies that it's him!
I forgot who said it (maybe Ricky Gervais) if you don't understand the script, pass it to Johnny Depp. LOL.
I could listen to actors tell stories about films they turned down all day. It's a good thing most of them don't want to tell us. :)
So you can't listen to them all day? 😂
The grocery shopping scene (from the movie) was filmed in Lakeland Florida, where im from!! That vintage publix is still there on south Florida Avenue 🤟🤟
Man I just love Kevin Costner. Such a timeless guy.
so well-spoken
Kevin and Gary. Handsome men
The talks must have taken place before Batman....Tim Burton certainly wasn’t unknown after directing a massive blockbuster
Edward Scissorhands was masterpiece
His accent veers all over the place. When do that many accents for a living it must be easy to forget your own.
Wow. I regret not seeing Gary Oldman as Edward Scissorhands too
if Gary hadn't turned town that role, Johnny Depp wouldn't have became the famous actor which we all know, that's my humble opinion
he didn't turn it down, he turned down the audition
Gary is a brilliant actor. My favorite.
One of my all time favorite movies, Edward Scissorhands.💙
Probably reading the Edward Scissorhands script for the first time, someone might not get it, but now we know Tim Burton’s style and every actor loves him now.
I think Michael Jackson’ wanted the part...too.
He did...they never gave him the time of day, sadly.
@@kaylalezabeth7175 but why they didn’t give a chance?
@@Michelle-ss8km I have no idea. But I think it would've been interesting to see him in the role.
Knowing Michael's personality he probably would've been quite good for the character too.
Great actor and a cool guy..
Ah, that is who I Love the Burton openings so much. 😂
Count Dracula , Churchill and Sid Vicious . These people are not similar but Oldman pulled off good portrayals of each of them
