What's actually incredible is by Gary Oldman turning it down, it created a magical partnership between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton which lasted his entire career and opened many doors.

He didn't turn it down though. Listen carefully to what he said. He was given the script, not offered the role. He hadn't even interviewed for it yet. It's quite possible he wouldn't have been chosen anyway.

I think on paper in the 90s with Tim Burton's style it'd be hard to envision other than seeming goofy. Gary Oldman really has played outcasts before Edward Scissorhands, but considering Beetlejuice I would wonder if Edward Scissorhands are supposed to be like a comedy. It really takes probably a conversation with Tim Burton to probably understand his vision without knowing who he is.

I know you wrote this a year ago, but I was thinking that if Gary Oldman had been Tim's muse instead of Johnny, he (Tim) would have a lot more credibility now than he does. I know people love Tim Burton but his adaptations on Charlie and the Chocolate factory and Alice in Wonderland were not successful. I was just musing whether Gary would have brought a more serious and darker tone that Johnny lacked in those two roles? (I love Johnny Depp, don't get me wrong.) Maybe it's just that Tim Burton was so brilliant at creating his own characters and should not have ventured into remake-territory? Anyhow, they also considered Michael Jackson for the role of Edward, so no complaints about the casting they chose lol . Though Gary would have KILLED it.

if Gary hadn't turned town that role, Johnny Depp wouldn't have became the famous actor which we all know, that's my humble opinion

Probably reading the Edward Scissorhands script for the first time, someone might not get it, but now we know Tim Burton’s style and every actor loves him now.

Knowing Michael's personality he probably would've been quite good for the character too.

Count Dracula , Churchill and Sid Vicious . These people are not similar but Oldman pulled off good portrayals of each of them
