Culver Props, Alaina Lewis making a Culver aircraft propeller
Culver Props was purchased in 2001 to continue offering the highest quality wooden propellers to the public. Gene and Larry Smith, owners of Valley Engineering, LLC, had used Culver Props on their own aircraft for some time and were so impressed with their performance and quality, they decided to buy the company after learning that it was ceasing production. The company and equipment were moved from Pennsylvania to Rolla, Missouri, where the manufacturing of these superior wooden propellers continues today.
Special care is given to match the size and pitch of the prop to meet the customer's specific need. Each propeller is made of only the best northern hard maple and birch available, with each piece of wood being hand-selected specifically for the unit being made.
Awards:
E.A.A. Air Operations Showmanship Award 2009
Gene Smith was awarded the prestigious by the members of the EAA Oshkosh Ultralight Community.
E.A.A. Ultralight Innovation Custom Power Plant Award 2006
Gene Smith was awarded the Ultralight Innovation Custom Power Plant Award at Oshkosh 2006.
Thank you for visiting our website. We are sorry to say that after careful consideration we have closed the company Valley Engineering LLC and stopped making the Back Yard Flyer.
After Grandpa (Gene) passed away in 2016 we decided we couldn’t offer adequate customer support for the plane. We still have all the tooling and jigs and have no plans to sell the design. Also, we no longer make the Big Twin engine or any VW based engines. We will continue to offer customer support for anyone who has a Back Yard Flyer or any of our engines, we are just not going to be in the manufacturing process anymore.
We appreciate all the support that has been shown for our little plane through the years. Grandpa loved designing and building and we were so grateful for the opportunity to get a few planes out into the aviation world and the opportunity for him to live out his aviation dream.
Thank you,
Alaina Lewis

A great interview Alaina, love that you are so passionate about the historical accuracy and the “by hand” craftsmanship in the process. Keep up the great work!
That woman is incredible with a bandsaw. Wow! It's great to see family-oriented businesses in aviation, especially related to manufacturing.
She is awesome
Thank you, that was a thoroughly entertaining interview. One can almost smell the sawdust and varnish. I'm delighted that the skills are being maintained. That goes for the dope and fabric engineers, as well as the gifted craftsmen and women who know how to use an English Wheel.

To bad they stopped making the back yard flyer ultralight. It was one of my favorites
Very nice
Hi Alaina. Blessings to you !
Met James at your Oshkosh booth on Friday, and we spoke at some length about your grand-dads design of the back yard flyer wing pivot joint. You guys have a great thing going !
Love your props ! My Dad was a small plane pilot. He would rent a Piper Cub in the early days, then a Cessna...when he had the money. He took all us kids flying..taught us a lot. He's gone now. I have a wooden prop, that he had for many decades. Its about 6 feet tall, a thin blade. In perfect condition. Its painted red, but I was going to strip it and see what lies ( or is it "lays" ) underneath . Should I touch it or leave it be ? What are used props going for these days ?l You are an artist ! Keep wooden props alive ! Matt.
Sacré petit bou de femme ,cool le bonjour de la france
Sacred little woman bou, cool hello from France
Incredible to think that the tip of the propeller has travelled 800 feet in one second.
So for a 6 foot prop thats about 2300 RPM.
You are an amazing woman. Bless you.
Espetacular.
Great business!
Sisters god bless you
She is the man
Hi ..
Good work
The best-known
top,
G'day,
Yay Team !
I posted a couple of Propeller-Carving Videos about 2 months ago...; 4 Laminae of rare & commercially extinct Australian Native Timbers, Quarter-cut salvage-milled with a Chinsaw - from Windfallen Trees...
The Prop's I've been making lately are tiny, 8-ich Diameter & 6-inches Pitch ; running on DC-Motors powered by Peltier-Effect Thermoelectric Generator.
The Peltier Effect Drive- units come from China, factory equipped with a 4-Blade Sheetmetal caricature of a Propeller..., which I measure as 18% efficient.
So I put my cantankerous Hat on, and made something which is closer to 90% Efficient, and looks a LOT better.
I'm planning on trying to sell some in an Art Gallery (!).
Have a good one.
;-p
Ciao !
Where in canada is the museum the prop you talked about
Hi nice props ! I saw your "Make a prop vid" and was wondering if you "scrap" a prop, do you sell it for display ?
I am making an ultralight right now, and I am planning on buying a propeller myself, I would prefer new anyways, what is the contact information for culver props so I can buy from them?
Is there a specific service life for a prop?
I need 2 forward rotation and 2 counterclockwise wings
5 axis CNC router?
Where did the name Culver start? I learned to fly at Fleet Field, Culver Indiana. Any connection?
what propellers you made were for sale. what if i buy ...? thank you...
Sir I want to order propeller how to connect with you
