Max , lol I never said it was. Please, just rewatch from 6:53 and tell me what you think. I guess I apologise that my wording misconstrued what I was trying to say, but still, a "religious element" coming across as to you as me saying "atheism is a religion" and singlehandedly ruining an 11 minute video is a bit harsh, when I didn't even fully make the slip-up.
The amazing thing about the single-stroke victory by Guts is how it shows that even though he was fighting for someone else's dreams, he had cultivated his fighting skills beyond that of griffith's by constantly being on the frontlines and testing and pushing himself. I just came up with this but this could reflect the difference between someone who spends their time dreaming and the one who spends his time doing. Guts' repeated successes in the face of overwhelming odds made the rest of the band look up to Guts as much if not more than Griffiths. So when he leaves we understand EXACTLY why griffiths is so devastated since a lot of their rise to power may not have happened without Guts. This is a hard realisation to have all in a single sword stroke.
There is a degree of truth in this, but Griffith's breakdown following the fight has more to do with the fact that he thought of Guts as his *possession* - the very idea that something that belonged to him could break free of his grasp was a nightmare to him and his first reaction to that was to assert control over someone else (i.e. the princess Charlotte) in an attempt to restore his own ego (which led to his imprisonment).
Devilman, Guin Saga, Original Star Wars, Excalibur (Arthurian legends), & Conan The Barbarian are some of the few series that heavily inspired Berserk.
The Conan influence is especially prevalent. As a matter of fact, one of the first things I thought when I first watched the 1997 anime was "Oh yeah, this is *very* Conan."
All that western stuff and not one mention of Go Nagai. The core of the Golden Age arc is Devilman. The core of the early Black Swordsman stuff is Violence Jack.
Where does Miura get the time to read and DIGEST all the reference material? Everything from Neitsche to Greek Mythology! There's only 24 hours in a day.

In an interview with Yukari Fujimoto, Miura mentioned these as influences: Violence Jack, Guin Saga, Pygmalio, Ranpo, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Fujihiko Hosono Violence Jack and especially Guin Saga for atmosphere. Ranpo (1978-87) as reference for his backgrounds. The Snow Queen (Guin Saga spin-off) and Pygmalio (1978-90) for Guts' sword size by mixing the two precedents. Fist of the North Star for having an attractive muscular male character who is powerful and can defeat many opponents. Thank you for the awesome video :D
Rest In Peace Kentaro Miura, Berserk will truly go down as one of the greatest stories ever told. Thank you for writing this masterpiece. U will be missed 🙏
The Sea God arc has also took some inspiration from the Pirates of the Caribean movie. Even though Evil Dead did not inspire the original conception of Guts, it played a large influence on later chapters, especially on the design and behavior of people possessed by evil spirits. Berserk actually has a whole lot of inspiration from the first Final Fantasy game on the NES. Town names, monster design, the existance of an elven village and the need of a boat to reach to it etc. The Guin Saga novels are one of Miura's main inspirations when it comes to world building The war between Midland and Tudor is roughly inspired by the real world 100 year war between France and England.
Yeah, that's why I said "some". Mainly with the fish people, and those pirates that get turned into sea creatures, before they get to the island. Miura has stated to be quite fond of the movie, so it's no stretch to connect the dots.
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention a big one: Femto's design is heavily inspired by the main character from the movie Phantom of the Paradise. Even his name resembles the word "Phantom"
wartincrowley whoah, I didn't know & quite surprised about femto design inspired by this movie character especially with design for the helmet is very similar. I guess I learn new things again. Also, seems like a quite horror movie, might wanna watch it if it's available & I have the time for it.
I wouldn't really call it a horror movie, although there are some horror aspects to it. It's a weird ass 70's movie about a disfigured musician seeking revenge against a satanic producer who stole his masterpiece. It's nice to watch to see all the plot elements Miura borrowed though.
You clearly have a lot of interest and passion for this series, and it shows in the level of research you've put into it, but your biggest issues are primarily on a technical level. Something that will help enormously is to just move away from your mic a little. It'll help decrease the slight popping, as well as the sounds of breath and mouth noises, and encourage you to speak a little more loud and decisively in order to be better picked up by the microphone, serving to inject your narration with just that extra bit of energy. In terms of the images displayed on screen, I notice you incorporate a lot of fades, and that's great. It's a good way to keep the momentum going in your video as you transition from one image to the next. The only issue is that this momentum is stopped dead by the static nature of these images as they just sit deadly still. I did notice some of them moving so I know you're aquainted with how to manage that effect, but it's something you'll want to do just a little bit more often. Finally, you committed a cardinal sin by including footage from the new series without sufficient advanced warning. It may interest you to know that prolonged exposure to that animation has been cited as a leading cause of eye cancer by the Surgeon General, and also that the suicide rate among Berserk fans has quadrupled since its debut in 2016. ... Femtos look is based on Winslow Leech once he's transformed into the Phantom in the Phantom of the Paradise. It's a pretty glaring omission with reference to the inspiration for Femto's design (seriously Google Phantom of the Paradise and prepare to see Femto.)
Really? And nothing is said about how much Devilman inspired Berserk? Goddamn it, the even main color struggle is taken from there, with the false white shepherd and black, brutal warrior with the quest for revenge fighting each other. Ryo from Devilman even had his own Zodd.
Everyone should look up the French artist Gustave Doré. He did a series based off the bible and Paradise lost, and honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if he inspired Miura's art, both in terms of imagery, and how he actually draws.
Greetings from Sweden! Regarding the undead spirits reanimating corpses, which of course quite often occurs in Berserk, the specific characteristics of them are quite similar to undead entities in Norse mythology. We call them "Draugar" (literal translation from old Norse would just be "ghosts"). They are the reanimated corpses of those who died without peace, and they are driven by malice and envy of the living, for still possessing the gift of life. One who was killed by a draug, could also become a draug (Remember Collette, volume 1). When rising from their graves, they could also take the form of a mass of smoke (much like the spirits not possessing a vessel in Berserk). Maybe this description fits the undead from many pieces of old mythology, but I am mostly familiar with Norse mythology. Just a little food for thought.
I live inside your house yea I was going to say about Devilman myself. If anyone remembers back when Akira was released on DVD it had on the cover "No Akira, no Matrix. It's that important." Devilman's would be "No Devilman, no Berserk or Evangelion. It's" you get the idea
I live inside your house that'd be nice and it's great to see someone else (Seven Seas) getting off their ass to bring the manga to the west besides Glenn Danzig, singer of punk band Misfits, with his Verotik comic book publishing company
Hmm I thought Gaiseric is inspired by Genghis Khan & Alexander The Great. This inline with Miura's previous works/manga about time travel in Genghis Khan reign. Also, Caska is inspired by Joan of Arc. It's pretty obvious with the warrior maiden & witch hunt plots.
Well, there are more similarities to the Shah of Khwarazmia, Muhammad II, who was one of the enemies of Genghis. Muhammad had just recently consolidated his empire and became the most powerful ruler in the middle east, but then makes one of worst mistakes in history by pissing Genghis off, inciting a Mongol invasion that completely and utterly destroyed his great empire in only 2 years.
Croz Raven the vandals didn't even have a land empire. They were naval based where yeah, carthage was the capital, but they were coastal with two of Italy's main islands in their possession. I would have to say I disagree with the videos interpretation of the skull knight Emporer Gaiseric or at least it would be more proper to say Emporer Gaiseric is a combination of Alexander and vandals Genseric. The only reason I say this is because Gaiseric is an Emporer where all of mainland Europe in berserk is dependent from Gaiseric's fallen empire. The vandals kingdom lasted until 543 as an intenral waring state to boot where king Genseric died in 477.
Funnily enough, this was recorded back in November, and before Crybaby I had no idea of its existence 😂. With all of the great comments on what else inspired Berserk, however, I am tempted to make a Part 2 where I'd give it a mention along with other things.
AlexEnterprises1 Great idea about doing a part 2. And don't worry, I also didn't know about Devilman being a big inspiration for series like Berserk, Neon Genesis Evangelion etc. I mean I knew about all these Go Nagai series, but never read/watched them, untill Crybaby.😁 Pretty hyped now to go back and read his manga. Heard with stuff like Mazinger Z and Cutie Honey he basically created the mecha piloting and magical girls genres.
One of the most surprises for me was to descover Beksinski's art and see MANY similarities troughout Berserk. The invocation of the Godhand looks very much like any paint of Beksinski, wich makes me think that the surrealist part of berserk comes from that. Never saw anyone talk about this reference, and I think it would be worth some investigation.
I love your videos, I learned some stuff about Berserk in this one, like how the castles are based on IRL ones, very interesting. By the way Nietzsche's name is pronounced NEE-CHA, not NEECH @ 7:07.
Great Video! Your presentation was very good and i didnt find the video boring at all. Eventhought I am a die heart berserk fan there were some things presented even I didnt know about, like the castle inspirations and some other stuff! Good job researching all that holy shit
Damn I gotta visit these places, and I always thought about the correlation between the evil dead and berserk, but this answers those questions! Great vid!
There's one thing I have yet to see someone address about berserk. The part where the gypsy woman gives Griffith the behelit. What she says to Griffith... That is something that I think needs to be explored. It's something that really resonated with me when I first saw berserk... Though I first saw the original anime, before the golden arc series. I still like the original better lol. Just saying.
Femto's mask and look to me, is a clear nod to Brian De Palma's 'Phantom of the Paradise'- a retelling a of faust where a man sells his soul to make popular music.
Nice video and all, but there should have been a lot to talk about regarding Skellig and all its real world mythological references -- same goes for the general state of the world at the onset of Fantasia.
Nietzsche wasn't an unreligious guy,he was actually affraid of what would happen if people cast aside their values and create new ones, and that is what happened in Nazi Germany,Sovietic Union and every other socialist country
The oneshot story is similar to the first episode of the Anime original. Perhaps the first episode of the anime series back in 1997 was not a coincidence, it was a way of introducing the story almost as a one shot original before going back to how he became like that.
I agree with several here. Gaiseric: combination of Genseric & Alexander. Ganishka: combination of Kanishka and Muslims invading Europe Maybe Guts is Charlemagne.
A great video, narration on par with Greyjedi91, as usual. I have a question: what is the soundtrack you used at the beginning in your previous video, when explaining Guts' childhood?
Thank you for the kind words, I'm about to make a comment like the one above, listing the music for that video as I'd forgotten to haha - thank you for your patience 👍🏼 EDIT: It's all there now man, enjoy.
Like your channel, also check out Moorcocks novels by the name "Elric of Melnibone" and "The tale of the Eternal Champion" where the main protagonists, Elric and Corum, resemble Griffith and Guts.
Friedrich Nietzsche and Carl Jung seem to be the primary influences. I would be genuinely shocked if they weren't. It's almost like Jung or Nietzsche themselves wrote Berserk.
this series in spired me to make my own manga series(not joking i have over 60 pages worth of script, ive been honing my own drawing skills for 1 year and a half and in a few mounts i will start actually drawing chapter 1,im pretty sure one one gives a shit but i will still say it,its going to be an Action adventure, dark fan, seinen, super power, vampires)name,Crimson heir
Loved the video, but all I have to say is this. Paganism is a religious category, not a religion itself. The only reason why I feel this mattered to mention is because you said that "Catholicism" (a religion) "Paganism" (Religious Category) are inspirations. But what kind of Paganism? Egyptian? Slavic? Greek or Sol Invictus? I know this might seem like a nit pick, but I just want to draw attention to it as saying something is related to Catholicism from X time period draws an image, saying Paganism from X time period draws up dozens of conflicting images that served to make the point more confusing instead of less.
Rest in peace Miura...

My Lad your doing something great here, keep it up!
Damn I gotta visit these places, and I always thought about the correlation between the evil dead and berserk, but this answers those questions! Great vid!
Well done! Let's keep rolling.
This is treasure man! Nice find!
Awesome video man! The shout out about Vagbond is appricated, never heard of it. Do you have any other recommendations for fans of berserk?
Go read vinland saga, devilman and clannad
I live inside your house clannad xD
Great vid I'll be looking for part 3
Wtf all the castles are from my country. I didn't know it!!!!! :DDD
Wow, that's awesome David! It would be like something straight out of a dream to see these locations in real life haha.
Hahaha, I will visit the castles as soon as possible XDD
Just a guess France
This is my favorite video from you so far bro, keep it up. Yooosh!
Arigato Andy Senpai 👍🏼👍🏼 Yooosh!
Very well out together, clear, and thank you
Femto's mask and look to me, is a clear nod to Brian De Palma's 'Phantom of the Paradise'- a retelling a of faust where a man sells his soul to make popular music.
Rest in peace Kentaro Miura.🙏
Great berserk content man
Keep up the good work!
Love the research you did here, thank you!
No.. Thank you for this video! Nice job man, Keep the good work!!
I always connected Nietzsche's work with berserk, it helps I started reading both at the exact same time.
Nice video and all, but there should have been a lot to talk about regarding Skellig and all its real world mythological references -- same goes for the general state of the world at the onset of Fantasia.
Berserk has always had a lot of medieval Spain in it.
In fact, I suspect Gutz is based loosely on El Cid.
MA BOI!!!!! GREAT VIDEO
Thanks Miura Sensei...
more of this please
Great videos on my favorite story. Got a sub buddy.
Berserk is probably my favorite manga/ Anima.
Yeah, and his the best manga artist imo. No one can touch his black and white work. The detail is crazy good. (9:51)
The movies would've been helped so much had they used the original soundtrack, that soundtrack elevated Berserk. Not many soundtracks do.
Nietzsche wasn't an unreligious guy,he was actually affraid of what would happen if people cast aside their values and create new ones, and that is what happened in Nazi Germany,Sovietic Union and every other socialist country
Easy reference to spot, but the Godhand seem to correlate pretty well with the Chaos Gods.
When it’s the best time to take Art History after reading the manga 🤯😍 ugghhhh just #details & #visuals ‼️💓
always love some in depth talk about Berserk
I think Miura was lying about evil dead. He claimed he's a huge fan of raimi and the similarities between the series are jarring
Guts name and desing are inspired by Gotz Von Berlichingen (the iron hand). A famous german knight/mercenary.
Guts is just so beautiful
The oneshot story is similar to the first episode of the Anime original.
Perhaps the first episode of the anime series back in 1997 was not a coincidence, it was a way of introducing the story almost as a one shot original before going back to how he became like that.
Very good video! Learned alot!
Surprised you didn't mention Devilman
Very good video dude, subscribed.
I agree with several here.
Gaiseric: combination of Genseric & Alexander.
Ganishka: combination of Kanishka and Muslims invading Europe
Maybe Guts is Charlemagne.
May 6th, 2021. R.I.P
Origin of the best anime character development evaaa.
as always a really great Video
Why is berserk so fucking amazing?
Guts himself is based off a 26th century German mercenary named Gortz von Berlichingen.
A great video, narration on par with Greyjedi91, as usual. I have a question: what is the soundtrack you used at the beginning in your previous video, when explaining Guts' childhood?
Thank you for the kind words, I'm about to make a comment like the one above, listing the music for that video as I'd forgotten to haha - thank you for your patience 👍🏼
EDIT: It's all there now man, enjoy.
Informative vid.
they were winning so many battles i knew it something's bad gonna happen.
It's the best manga I've read.
I want to see Black swordsman arc animated!
great vid there bud.
Great video bro! 😎✌
