I don't know what speaks louder Mark or his guitar either way we are fools to make war and in my opinion this is in the top five greatest songs ever made.
This song gets better with age. As you grow older, you get to understand the meaning of the lyrics, combined with the restrained but powerful music. A genuine and timeless classic.
It really is beautiful isn't it. I will have to tell my boy about the lyrics and explain it to him. Would be good to learn some history. Which he loves 😊
That's the only true reaction I expect to see when people watch this song. It means that they really understand the meaning and the profundity of it, as well as the magnificent piece of art that Dire Straits manege to produce
This is my favorite version of this song. Mark lets it fly. And watching his technique is so amazing. This video shows it so good. He doesn't just pick he uses his thumb to stop strings. This song gets to me all the time. It was on an episode of Miami Vice you can see on RUclips.
As a massive Queen fan, I love and admire Dire Straits. Especially this song, chills all over the place ❤️ Mark Knopfler an amazing guitarist, such a distinctive sound and voice. Keep up the good work guys!
One of my all time favourite bands. Glad to say I saw them live a few times during the 80's. Dire Straits are a band that sound best live & Mark K is one of the best guitarists there is. No auto tune back in those days, just fantastic musicians.
It was the first time I have seen this video, and apart from the extremely inept photography, (took about 8 min to even see Knopflers brilliant left hand) it is so heart-warming to see just how much this song means to Mark (Knopfler). Excellent song and sentiments..
What a awesome and powerful song! I love Marks style of playing with his fingers, what a sound... Romeo & Juliet please, some day. And more Nightwish too, thank you! 🇫🇮🇬🇧
I'm a huge fan of Dire Straits, as was my late Dad. I grew up listening to them and I remember watching this performance on video (I was 6/7 at the time, so my Dad recorded it). I didn't understand the significance of it at the time, just thought it was a brilliant performance of a brilliant song, but to do that on stage at a Nelson Mandela tribute concert while he was incarcerated purely for the colour of his skin (for 27 years!), just WOW. I have tears in my eyes when I listen to it on the album, so you can imagine my reaction to watching this performance. It isn't possible to score it high enough for me. Also love the Falkland Islands version of the video to this song - you guys should do a reaction to that. I'm a new subscriber to your channel, and I've subscribed purely on the basis of this video. You guys seem to have a very similar relationship to the one I had with my Dad, and you're both very engaging and likeable. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼😊 that really means the world to us. Welcome to our little xplo-family 🙂 I think we'd like to see as many of these as possible. It's such a beautiful piece of music and I think as my boy gets older, he'll understand more and more what it all means 🙂
Since the Ukraine war, I've watched a number of reaction videos to this fundamental truth - you see it arising within people within the first three measures of Knopfler's guitar. Usually it ends in tears - unlike any song ever written, it touches us all. He has captured the pure essence of our fundamental failure, and the pain of his guitar escapes no one. This video is particularly fascinating, because the young man's innocence has yet to meet some of our harsher realities, as compared to his father. So he reacts to his father's reaction. But sadly and perhaps inescapably, the tears of the father become the tears of the son. And tho' we long to shield them, we cannot . . .
Mark Knopfler wrote this about the Falklands war, its a dying soldier talking to the soldiers around him, his brothers in arms. The words are heartbreaking, if you listen again. The OFFICIAL VIDEO has graphics even more heartbreaking, I think Mr Knopfler should be very proud of this song. Mark Knopfler is a genius, I've come to realise that at the age of a young 74, they were at their best in the 1980's I loved them then and still do, Mark will be around the same age as me now. Very well done 👏👏👏👏👏
My twins Han not long been born when this came out and I thought it was brilliant They have both served in Iraq and one has done Afghan twice , it has a different meaning for me now , they are both safe but I can’t say the same for some of their comrades , God bless all that get sent to war for old blokes who think they know best
This song was played on a episode of miami vice the coolest tv show back in the 80's the episode was Out were the buses don't run . It was when Miami vice was a massive hit tv show 1985 I do believe and the episode the song was played for was one of he best episodes from the series the song fitted that episode so well. It was the first time I heard brothers in arms and I had tears in my eyes ,fantastic song .The episode is on utube
Like you both reacting to Brothers in Arms! Thanks. Today, with Russia invading Ukraine, the song becomes special in a new way. Esspecially the last two rules: 'We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms'..
Kids too young. At points he seemed bored and restless. Completely understandable. That is the beauty of innocence. This is a poem you have to grow into and then you cry.
I think that's just the lads normal face as he's a teenager 🤣 He really loves the song. I think the lyrics are something to behold and really touching. I've explained more about the lyrics to him but didn't want to lay it on too heavily. I'd rather he learn to grasp lyrics himself as he grows 😊
I love Dire Straits..seeing Mark Knopfler reminded me of another song...one he did with James Taylor, called “Sailing to Philadelphia”..it’s wonderful..you might know of it already..can only find audio of it on RUclips...It’s a little slice of the history of the U.S.A.....about the drawing of the Mason Dixon Line...your son might like the story it tells..Aros yn iach ....fan go maith 🤩
Sailing to Philadelphia is my favorite too- always gives me chills, deeply stirring song, Mark Knophler must read a lot about history- Done with Bonapart, Iron Hand, Je suis Desole- best of the best
Guys I've been asking loads of People to react to this live set from the Mandela Concert also check out and react to " Sultans of swing and also Romeo and Juliet both from the same concert you won't be disappointed trust me
This song was inspired by the Falklands War, which was going on when Dire Straits lead singer Mark Knopfler wrote the song. The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and the UK over islands off the coast of Argentina that each country claimed rights to. The islands are British territories, but in 1982 Argentina tried to reclaim one of the islands. Britain reclaimed their territories, but lost 258 soldiers in the conflict.
I remember the stories about the Falklands. I was Born in 82 so when I looked up my year of birth there were lots of storing about that sad time. The song is a very emotional one, that anybody will feel just listening to it. Mark Knopfler really shows his true genius here 🙂
Strange that whilst I was at Newcastle Uni in the late 70's when Dire Straits were starting off at the time they didn't "do anything for me". Newcastle is their hometown so they were getting a lot of radio exposure and Sultans of Swing was all the rage, but until Brothers in Arms came out and the title track specifically I wasn't interested in them. I felt that they were ruined by the fame trip and that is certainly the vibe that (Mark) Knopfler has given out. Great reaction, this is up there with High Hopes as a track that can bring a tear to my eye too.
I actually didn't know where they were from. I just knew they were British.. Sultans of swing will be coming soon. I think if a song can bring a tear to my eye, then it's a perfect song to me ☺️
Yeah maybe a little.. I think for now it's more about the performance and the sound that he's connecting with. It's a struggle to get through this song without feeling very intensely! 🙏🏼❤️
Of course he has tears. The people killing one another have more in common with each other than the ones at the top waging these wars. We went into Quwait but we ignored Rwanda. No people were threatened, just oil wells and supply chains and pipelines. Meanwhile, 500,000, many women and children were being slaughtered in Rwanda. We might as well of had an Exxon insignia on our arms rather than the American flag. Look at all the brave who were killed and for what? When will we stop killing our brothers?
It's extremely hard to listen with everything going on now with Russia and Ukraine. I really wish everyone could just live and love. Just that. Peace 🙏🏼
Couldn't agree more! I hope myself and my son never witness that kind of thing in front of us. I actually don't watch the news. I avoid negativity and won't be roped into believing the propaganda. We prefer to enjoy music together, not dwell on the failings of the world. Hence this channel...
Mark knopfler on the guitar is the 8th wonder of the world , 🥺
That is what I call giving your child a great education.
I think this is Mark at the very pinnacle of his technical and artistic mastery... his restraint and control is transcendent
I don't know what speaks louder Mark or his guitar either way we are fools to make war and in my opinion this is in the top five greatest songs ever made.
Mark made that guitar cry.
He did. Then he made it feel happy again... like a god! 🙏
If this song isn’t a 10/10, what is? This is the gold standard right here-and it’s good to see the next generation being introduced to proper music.
No words between dad and són but full communication through music
We have that bond. I'm very lucky to have a wonderful son with a beautiful soul
That's the only true reaction I expect to see when people watch this song. It means that they really understand the meaning and the profundity of it, as well as the magnificent piece of art that Dire Straits manege to produce
Thank you so much. We absolutely love this!
Dad has tears,so have I,because your Dad and I know what this song really is about,I hope You never have to see war...... :-)
Thank you for this beautiful comment. Dad totally agrees 🙏🏼
Undoubtedly the best version of brothers in arms. Makes me tear up every time too. 😊
I think it may well be yes! I absolutely loved this version. Gets me every time!
