In today’s episode we are feeling a little in over our heads as we attempt to figure out where to focus our efforts on the build. Is it more important to install our chimney pipe first or start on our window installation?
We decide to focus on our wood stove and chimney installation first, but we are met with a few errors that make it so we have to stop our chimney project. First, we find out that the hole in our roof for our stove flashing is not big enough for our chimney box, so that means we have to remove our flashing and cut the hole in our roof to a bigger size. Then we find out that we bought the wrong size stove pipe! This halts our chimney project completely.
We shift to learning how to install our windows, and we install the first window in our house! We’re one step closer to being completely dried in.

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on RUclips. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 9 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the summer of 2022. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

Finally a sponsor! Y’all deserve that!
Thank you!
The patience and stamina to do what you have done is amazing.
Thank you so much!
I can't remember where I heard this from, but it fits your situation.
Build your 1st house for a neighbor/stranger, your 2nd for a friend, your 3rd for your self.
In hindsight, I think your 1st structure should be for tools/workspace, your 2nd for temporary abode/later guests/animals, 3rd for your home. Which y'all have done! Looking amazing!
It’s amazing how you both work together and keep things light & fun!
We try to have fun and still get SOME work done. LOL.
It's a challenge, but it's all coming together. Looking good y'all! 🙂🏠
It is a challenge, but it's worth it! Thank you for watching!
Hi Ryan/Sarah,, Al here you guys are knocking it out , your also getting so confident, and enjoying what your doing , wonderful viewing, , keep up the goodworh guys xx al
Thanks for watching Al. Every day we feel a little more confident.
Dad makes mommy happy!
Hi Ryan, Hi Sara, You know it takes a lot of nerve to build your own home and you two have done so well and you should be proud of how far you have come, I know I for one am enjoying your adventure and love watching your videos, keep it going both of you, you have a lot of support out there.. Anyway take care both of you and I look forward to seeing you again soon. Best wishes from England..
Thanks so much! 😊 Honestly, this would be so much harder without the support of all of you. Thank you so much for being there and cheering us on.
Oh my, when the wood burner rocked back when you were bringing it in with the tractor, a huge gasp from me i thought it was going to fall, I'm so glad you got it in safely, they are so heavy 👌👌😊😊
You and me both! When I was editing the video I noticed I put my hand up like I was going to catch it from falling.
You two are doing great. Building a home is a lot of work and a lot of decisions to make during the process.
Thank you so much! The amount of decisions is crazy for sure. And the thing that gets us every time is that each big decision leads to more small choices. We're getting the hang of it (all the choices) little by little, though.
I come here for the journey and I am loving the ride. Keep going, it’s great.
Awesome! We're so glad you're here! Thank you for watching!
You guys have the greatest attitude. Great job!!
Thank you!
If anyone puts you guys down. They should think to themselves whether they themselves have ever taken a step into the unknown. I truly think you guys are an inspiration. I myself have learnt so much from watching you. Bravo to you both for even attempting this. It's wonderful to see two people making an amazingly beautiful home for yourselves and you children.
Ahh... Thank you so much Nicki! Having the opportunity to build this house and share it with our audience is such a privilege. Thanks for being one of our best supporters. We appreciate you.
I'm always happy to see your next episode! You are doing a great job! So glad the woodstove didn't fall! We had the same thing happen when we were putting ours into our yurt. We are enjoying your journey!
As my momma used to say.. "if you're struggling at a task, take a day off.. relax.. ask around and look at it from a different point of view (POV)".. if a mistake was done, see how you can fix it.. or use that mistake to your advantage. you're learning, eventually one day very soon.. the both of you are gonna sit in the lounge and look up at all of this happy filled struggle and say... hmm it was both a pain and a lot of backaches.. but we did it...you will persevere and go to the next horizon. ;) Stay safe n warm, GOD BLESS YOU BOTH.
Thank you for the positive motivation. It is frustrating to have problem and not have things go as smoothly as we like, but we are taking it all in stride and pushing through each obstacle that comes our way. Looking forward to sitting in that lounge. LOL
Hi there! Been watching your channel for a while - really enjoy that you are REAL and novices and showing the reality of true full-house-scale DIY :).
Another channel I watch strongly recommends doing the first burn in a new wood stove outside as they can really smell, depending on whatever coating there is that gets burnt off….
Thank you so much! We really appreciate that you watch. Someone else recommended that that first burn happen outside as well. Luckily, when we did that first burn, we didn't have all of our windows or doors in so we had lots of ventilation.
1 step at a time and have fun
Work on windows until the new roof piece comes in. Finish off the roof so it's well sealed against rain and wind. Roof integrity is #1. Then go ahead and install the wood burner so you have heat and the whole roof system connection is complete.. Finish windows so you are dried in then exterior trim work to protect the outside. Next electric with an eye to where/how you will run the plumbing. Then plumbing. Drywall, install flooring and start on kitchen cabinets is what I'd do.
Thank you for the amazing comment Sue!
This is pretty much the process we will follow, but we do need to put the insulation up before the electrical can go in. Plus, we have the landing and some interior walls to finish so we know where the electrical boxes will go.
DON'T GIVE UP BECAUSE YOU ARE VERY STRONG COUPLE AND I CAN SEE YOUR NOT GOING TO LET ANYTHING KEEP YOU FROM BUILDING YOUR HOME I ALWAYS CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR VIDEOS I AM VERY BLESS TO SEE YOUR VIDEO THANK YOU BOTH STAY STRONG AND SAFE OUTTHERE ROSA OLBERA
Thank you SO much!
Good fix! Always a learning curve!
Thanks for watching Donald.
You all are doing fantastic and I would just give you this bit of advice : BREATHE, just step back and take a big breath and do not let the stress break you…… when it’s all said and done it’s not going to make any difference if you finish it a few days early or a few days late etc. etc. !! You only get one shot at staying healthy ❤️❤️🙂
Wise words Bruce. Thank you 🙏
It’s going to be the cosiest home ever
Love it!!
Lots of hugs💝💙
Thank you! We're so excited to watch it continue to become our home.
Y'all got this!! Looks great 🥰🥰
CHIMNEY ,WINDOWS,STIFF DRINK.YOU GUYS ARE DOING A FANTASTIC JOB.
Sounds like a good plan Steve. Love that you're there for every episode with a supporting comment. Thank you for your support.
Hi you two, keep your focus on the Windows, closing the house against moist air and rain. Then add the chimny so you can heat the house and dry it out before apply insolation. You can start working on Electrics and plumbing in the mean time.
Thank you so much for the tips. It sounds like we are right on track with what you suggested.
amazing progress up to next video
Thank you so much!
Watching another couple build their house. They got snow and it slid down and crushed the top of their chimney. Apparently you need a "Snow Diverter" to prevent this. Better check to see if you need it. I know you have a steep roof to aide snow sliding.
Thanks Daniel. I'll investigate this and see if we are missing something. With our asphalt roof the snow doesn't slide off easily like it would with a metal roof.
You're going to get it in ,take time keep warm safe GOD BLESS ♥ 🙌
That's the plan!
You two work well together, obviously she is handy to have around lol
I don't think I'll trade her in. LOL
You're getting there😁1 nail 1 srew 1 new pain at a time but the progess is phenomenal👍💪🙏✌
That's the plan! We pretty much expect there to be mistakes and challenges at this point. Just roll with the punches and keep putting one foot in front of the other. We will get there.
Thanks for your support.
Hi Ryan and Sara, we want to thank you for sharing such good content on how to build our own house. my husband and I are looking for a kit to build our cabin but with so much information on the internet it is sometimes a little frustrating, I wanted to know if you can share with us the name of the place where you purchased the kit. thank you very much and success in this wonderful project!
We purchased our kit from Conestoga Log Cabin Homes. There was a little more "custom cuts" required than we envisioned, but our experience working with them has been fantastic.
First fix electrics and plumbing get them done but check first where your appliances are going to go bathroom sets as well so you know where to put the wiring and the pipework hope that helps I have Been in the building trade for over 50 years I am retired now I will try and help you best I can
That does help. Thank you so much!
Just a question about the window installation, I always thought that it noticed be floating and not attached to the logs to account for log shrinkage
Not sure. Since these are laminated engineered logs maybe there isn't as much shrinkage? We followed the manufactures instructions though so I'm hoping we will be fine.
Get the house as water proofed as you can and as much outside stuff you can meaning doors and windows and so forth. Next think about all the ruff in stuff like pumping and electrical wiring and so forth. I guess you will not have drywall??? as that would be next and then work on kitchen and bathrooms finish each step as you go. Leave flooring as long as you can it would be just about last thing before all finish work..... you got it all done then outside back fill nothing to it hahahah just take a break every now and then and go somewhere to just get away for a day or so. it will help, and do one thing at a time like do all windows and finish them, do all doors and finish them Yes even trim them out. One thing at a time don't jump around you end up with way to many lose ends.
No drywall. The interior finish will be shiplap.
I think your point about finishing things before moving on is an important one and something we tried to follow, but then life throws obstacles in your way. We were so focused on getting things done to prepare for the roofers that we left a lot of open loops.
We are getting all those buttoned up now so we can get back to starting and finishing projects.
You guys are amazing!!?
You guys rock!! Thank you so much for this series on your build, I'm in the beginning stages of a similar cabin here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and you have given me a good insight of what I'm in for, even though I'm in the trades and I have plenty of knowledgeable friends to draw from it going to quite an endeavor....I have a question if I may, watching the videos on the first couple of log courses I didn't notice you predrill for any electrical or did I miss an episode? if not I'm curious on what the plan is for running plugs and switches on the outside walls ?? By the way did I mention you guys Rock!!!!
Paul in NH
Good question. There is a void on the interior for wiring. We have ridged foam insulation finished with shiplap. So we will have at least 3/4” to work with.
Always work to get your house totally closed in.......windows, doors, any vents, chimneys etc. Once that is done, you can work inside at your leisure.
That is our goal for sure! I love the idea of working inside at our leisure!
I also love your dog, he hasnt helped much though.😃😃😃
Right? She's actually 12 years old (she'll be 13 in August), and I'm amazed how much she chooses to hang out with us in the build. But she's a little demanding about wanting a bed or a blanket in the build site. We REALLY hope she gets to see the final product!
I’m concerned about your chimney install. Maybe I don’t understand the install or you installed the chimney support off camera? There should be a roof support bracket that supports the entire weight of the chimney. Did you install one?
All your questions will be answered in the episode going live today. But yes, they just didn't have the supports in stock when we did the stack install. New video posting in a few minutes.
Just so you know we care - when that stove tipped back on the tractor, I tried to reach out and stop it. Then I laughed!!
You and me both! When I was editing I noticed my hand go up, like I was going to stop it.
Would this be classed as "Murphy's Law" Great stamina guys. Be safe good luck.
I think it would be. We were so excited to have the roofers help put the flashing in I didn't take the time to verify the correct flashing. It was a stupid mistake but luckily i hadn't re-nailed the flashing again before we caught our mistake.
Like for the video👍👍👍
Insulating the roof
We need to run our electrical and add furring strips to the rafter first, then insulation.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid we’re building a mobile sauna right now and totally get the jumping around because it’s always something holding up the next step. You two are doing great & I love following your progress.
Push the stove pipe up from the inside of the building it will go through the sleeve better which is fixed to the roof
That could work but once the box was in there wasn’t an opening from inside the house. Once we have the right flashing it will slide right in.
Windows, doors and chimney first before any internal walls.
Sounds like the right plan.
👌👌👌😍
bravissimi
Thank you!
😯👍👍👍👌
🤗👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 love your videos
Yay! Thank you!
👏👋👌👍😁😊😉
get all your soffitt put up before you tack back the lift, it will go a lot faster than being on a ladder
That is great advice. Working on ladders is for the birds!
Die reden mir zuviel !! They talk too much for me!!
