Been watching a lot of new diesel truck videos lately. Everything I see tells me to keep my 06 Ram QC with Cummins 5.9. I bought it new, 143k miles, has been a fantastic vehicle. So many memories made in this truck with my kids. I’ll just keep it and they can bury me in it. I don’t even know what DEF is. I change my own oil. Fleetgard filters all around. Love my old truck.
Good for you. But if you think there is no benefit working and living out of a modern 6.7 cummins, you're in denial buddy. DEF sucks to have to fill up, but you should educate yourself on why we need it these days. I'd love to hear a good argument from you on the benefits of having more Nox in the air.

@@mikhailyaremkivI'll give the best answer I can... First off, the majority of diesel pickup truck owners buy their def in single use plastic containers, which is already an emission there. Next, the dpf requires the truck to "Regen" (create very hot exhaust temps to burn off soot) so essentially injecting extra fuel that a pre emission truck would not use. Next, EGR decreases the life of the engine by feeding it some of its exhaust gas, which is hotter, meaning the engine has to work harder along with the turbo to overcome the worsened air density. Next, the dpf is known to clog when not used mostly on highway, and become basically a landfill item that needs replaced... It's not always about the direct emissions you can measure from the pipe, if you replace parts sooner than you should need to, this also increases emissions output of a vehicle

I disagree. 21k on a new diesel truck is a lot for the average consumer.
I don't tow often, but I do drive it up and down the state of California and I love it. The Cummins is a fantastic power plant.
I can remember how happy Roman was the day he picked it up. It wasn't just another purchase for him, he seemed especially proud about getting an HD diesel.
The "Ranch Truck" that did 1/100th of the work it was supposedly bought to do. David did most of the work with his own trucks. Then they hired proper contractors to come in and do the real work. It is like saying, brought a pebble to a project and claimed praise when the dump trucks brought the gravel. 😜 But it did enough for the record keeping to justify its purchase I guess.

My 2013 2500 mega cab Cummins has been a great truck since new. Doesn’t use much DEF at all, no maintenance issues, 21 mpg without a trailer. I change oil every 5,000 miles with regular old Rotella 15W40 and a Baldwin filter for about $55. The EGR system really contaminates the oil so I would rather change oil oil more frequently. Truck is not a daily driver though, only used for road trips or towing.
This is one bad @$$ truck. Love the way TFL upgraded it and I love the excitement in which Andre reviewed it as a long term truck!

This is one of TFL's best trucks, hopefully they hold onto it for a while longer. If not, Andre should buy it from the company when the time comes ;) Also, $168 for an HD diesel truck oil change is more than fair. Think about how much money is just in the large amount of oil that they hold.
On my last Super Duty an oil change with fuel filters and air filter was approaching $300, I'm sure it's more now.
I LOVE my 2022 Ram 3500 Cummins Night Edition SRW except for the ride quality. For $85k I shouldn’t have bruises from most bridge abutments. I still think TFL Truck should use my truck to do a video showing some tricks to improve ride quality in the 3500’s. Otherwise, it’s a beast. I just ran the IKe Gauntlet with an 11k lb toy hauler. Never touched the brake going down - held at 60 mph. I ran 58-62 mph going up.
Friends Jeep Compass oil change was almost $100 at a shop. So $168 for that wasn’t bad. But on top of all the other maintenance items plus def. A gas would be better unless you need to pull a trailer all the time. Drivig around town is not easy on those DPF and Def systems.
With oil changes, they are less frequent than with gas. $168 isnt bad considering doing it on the v8 is going to be over 100 dollars
Yeah, every 15,000 miles. However, when I had my 16, they wanted 200 for the oil change and 300 for both fuel filters. 25 dollars for 2 gallons of DEF (pilot is better). I would go through a tank in 10,000 miles. Pre diesel gate. Every 40-50,000 miles you have to have the EGR cleaned. The air filter was expensive too.
23 silverado 2500 6.6l gas and jiffy lube wanted over $100, have no idea what dealer would want.......did it myself for like $40......anything I can do I will and saves a half day going to dealership.....

For once, I'd like to see one of the big RUclips auto channels actually do some of the maintenance themselves and save a few bucks. I think most enthusiasts tend to at least do their own oil changes and other basic things
Most tend to, and they probably do as well, but they also sell their trucks after a year or two, official maintenance records make it a little smoother

67 yrs old would never pay someone for an oil change I can do for half the price and know that it was done right.
How much is your time worth? If you make $100k+ it probably isn’t worth changing your own oil.

If you have a DEF system you have to use the truck as a truck. If you use it as a daily driver on short trips you will plug up the DEF system, as it never gets hot enough or run long enough to clean itself out. I've worked in the Auto parts industry for 7 years and the ones I see with issues are the ones that are family trucks and never used to tow or haul anything and used for short trips in town. The people that work the truck never seem to have issues with it.
I have a 2013 Ford Escape (inherited 1/3 of it) as a grocery getter for this very reason.
You’re confusing the DEF and DPF system. How will someone plug up a DEF system from not working the truck hard enough?

47K miles on my 19 2500. Only issue was the abs module went out after the manufacture flash and Johnson auto had a hard time diagnosing. I told them it was the abs module but they didn't listen and went chasing after the brake booster, master cylinder ect.
My problem with these new trucks (besides the price), is that they feel and look too business with too many computers and complexity. I work in a complex corporate job, so when I am out on the farm I want something fun and simple. 12 valve

Diesel engine, 4x4 cuts into payload. Toss in the larger wheels and the lift kit and his payload was probably halved.
I have almost identical truck for 37x13.5 MTs and that probably is why my MPG is litter less. Wish mine had new mirrors as I have started leaving mine in the tow configuration as it is much safer as I could see smaller cars in passenger blind spot as I have a GFC topper and the height of truck. I always used to be in the keeping mirrors down when not towing club but that makes the concave mirror somewhat useless and in tow mirror mode I can actually see smaller cars beside me. I did add a 3rd stick on mirror to help but that still doesn't compare to the original concave mirror. Hate on me if you want but I would rather have better vision and not cause an accident.
Bought a used 2020 with 75k mikes it now has 78k. Love it so far. 4” buds fuel rims new tires for $53k. Traded in my 2019 f-150.
Stay far away from GM OR CHRYSLER ......Stick with Ford unless you want a nightmare on your hands
Dealership wanted $250 for an oil change on my 2021 Rebel eco diesel... I bought an oem filter online and Quaker state oil in Walmart. Called stellantis to confirm changing oil by myself won't void my warranty. Dealerships are killing American auto industry now!
As a Ram owner I can tell you the mirrors suck. I drove an F250 for work and their mirrors are the best. As for the DEF i switched to the platinum blue DEF, i feel like it lasts longer and i can smell the difference when I'm pouring it in. No problems with that yet, 123k on odometer.
I would hope the interior is holding up with 20k something miles lol. I have a 17 Cummins with 198k and the interior still looks great, it’s cloth also. If you want to do a comparison I’m in Colorado Springs, mines still 100% stock motor, rebuilt and tuned trans.
Our 2014 is at 200k miles and original trans & motor. Leveling kit & 35s. Been great. Interior is in great shape too

One hemi 5.7 cost $97 for full synthetic oil change at dealer and that's 7 qts as the 6.7 cummins takes 14qts and goes further on oil changes
4:11 Honestly, Peak DEF is a rip-off and if Alex or anyone else decided to use "Peak Platinum DEF" then the chances of experiencing DEF-related problems increases quite a bit. DEF is a *very* specific formula that cannot be strayed from otherwise it cannot be API certified or be called DEF. So Platinum DEF is snake oil and highway robbery at over $20 for a 2.5 gallon jug.
So, knowing that DEF is a very specific formula that means brand doesn't matter. The best DEF is whatever is freshest and cheapest. Typically that means DEF from the pump at a well-trafficked truck stop or the cheap Walmart SuperTech DEF. I refuse to buy Peak on principle as they are price gouging and not providing a product worthy of the higher price.
I'll repeat it again. Do not use Peak Platinum DEF. It has caused countless problems for diesel owners, whether it's a formulation issue or because it's expired due to nobody wanting to pay the high price is anyone's guess, but don't buy it.

$168 for an oil change on this truck actually sounds pretty reasonable. I currently spend the same amount to do my OWN oil change on my 6.7
I have a 2021 ram 2500 Laramie Cummins. I LOVE this truck. Set the cruise, tow haul mode, exhaust brake on, it doesn't even know a trailer is back there. (even in the mountains). AND it's as quiet and rides as nice as our Mercedes sedan. Only complaints are cost of service ($130 fuel filter?), typical diesel maintenance and Garbage factory tires, (Recently replaced.)

I drive a 2018 Colorado 4 cylinder. And my dealership charges $90 to do the oil change. And they say rotate the tires It's free I got a lifetime warranty on it. As long as I don't go over 5000 miles on oil change. That's why I take it to a Chevy dealer. So it's in the computer and yes, I keep all the receipts.

$168 at the dealership isn't bad. I changed the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter in my 7.3 Powerstroke a couple weeks ago and that was about $140.

I have a 2020 Ram 2500 Diesel with 120,000 miles on it and it drives like it did the day it was new. The only problem I have had was the Turbo actuator went out and cost about $3500 to fix. It is a company vehicle so the dealer did it not me. Mine also had the fuel pump recall done.

The wheels, tires and lift are too much.. Would be better on 35s with less offset so that the original fenders would provide coverage. It would look better and actually perform better 99% of the places you'd take it. This setup might be better if you have to drive on a rough dirt road every day.
Is the AluCab gone - did you give it back or sell it? Did Roman damage it? That thing was great except for the propane heater, which made no sense considering this is a diesel truck - a diesel heater would have been much more practical - never have to worry about fuel (refilling, quantity, or getting too cold to flow properly), no silly bottle or chimney getting in the way .
My stepdad has a 2016 with over 400k miles. Transmission has been replaced 5 times though 😂. They cannot keep up with the power those engines make.

DEF consumption would be different if you were closer to sea level. If it were mine, it would get deleted anyway.
The recalls, one for an O-ring for the transmission dip stick and the relay for the grid heater. I'd be happy as all get out with just two nits as recalls.
I'd imagine that having any vehicle serviced at the dealership is expensive, so spending $168 for a dealership oil and filter change isn't bad.
I'm interested in how the brakes are holding up? The suspension components, now that the truck has after market parts and lifted could be a crap shoot.

I love your channel and your reviews. I am buying a 2500 in the next month or so. I just wanted to have 50% to put down so Im not crushed by a monthly note/depreciation. Anyway, I really want a diesel even though I dont tow. Every channel says to avoid a diesel unless you are towing.
Unfortunately, Im an idiot, and really love diesels. Im sure Ill regret it, but something about the "tunability" of a diesel just interests me.

Price dealership cost for changing the two fuel filters...in the Peoples of Commiefornia it cost over $700.
I really don't need a diesel any more, but I can't force myself to pay what they want for a new truck or even a nice used one. I guess I will just keep my old one. At least it's old enough I don't need DEF.
I changed my oil yesterday myself because the same dealer in the video wants $174 now. I got Shell Rotella 15w40 full synthetic (3.5gal) and a Mopar filter for just over $100.

I’d never take my truck to the dealer for an oil change. I wouldn’t trust them. I do it on my Chevy diesel - it’s the easiest vehicle for an oil change. No Jack needed. 1/3 the price too.
Last time my Sierra was at the shop was when I deleted it back in 2014. Duramax is really not bad to work on it.
My 2020 2500 hd lamarie 4x4 w cummin. Rear main seal leak @ 5000 miles. Cracked head at 50,000. Alternator gave out at 55,000. At least 3 recalls with last one awaiting parts. I took the 100,000 bumper to bumper so it's still warrantied but I don't think these 6.7 cummins with the government exhaust regulations will see 100,000 without a major failure. I'm a 4 Ram owner, like the look and the ride but I would rather have less problems for what Ram is charging for the product. Absolutely am not feeling the money's worth.

We use Hot shots Secret EDT in our diesel pickups. The DEF fluid lasts longer, and our '18 Ram 2500 Crewcab 6.7L goes 1,100 miles between regens. The only problem we had was the NOX sensor was a problem. 4 visits to the dealer did not fix the problem. Then I changed the Battery to a Walmart AGM battery. No more NOX sensor problems, and the truck runs great. With our Hawk model 4wheel popup camper on the truck. At 65mph we average 20-22 mpg. The truck has General APT 275/70r18 tires. We run Rotella T6 5w40 oil all year round. Have Bilstein 4600 shocks and have an air lift 5000 spring to install for more stability in the rough.
The truck take Tioga Pass with ease. And handles any of the high mountain passes like they are little hills. Can take Oatman grade on a hot summer day, like it were flat lands.
The Ram 2500 with the Cummins 6.7L is a Brute of a truck. Our daughter and son-in-law have an '18 Ram 3500 Mega cab 4wd 6.7L. They pull a 35ft 5th wheel or a 3 horse trailer. My son-in-law used to have a Dodge Challenger. He laughed when I told him that the truck they now have, would be the ultimate vehicle ever for him. But now he believes!

@@jameseroh6544 But DEF is burned proportional to fuel, so unless your driving habits changed and/or your fuel economy improved, it’s nothing but a placebo.

Pondering on getting a 2500 or 3500 cummins as a work/daily truck. Will work on houses fix/flips hauling supplies and equipment like small excavators/ bobcats etc. Can 2500 handle with a small payload like this? Is 3500 really that rough to ride in around town? I would appreciate anyones input or experience. Thanks
Rams are down on payload which what you want for construction, I would just get a gas

Important one - I have the 2022 Limited Longhorn. I love it but there is some bullshit. Had four freakin recalls for one. And the infotainment isn't flawless. Otherwise, power and interior have been amazing. I plan on keeping it long term and eventually taking it to Banks Power in California and doing the Full Monty. I actually like the mirrors. But they are a pain.
Do the grid heater delete kit and monster ram intake from Banks Power. I did it to my '17 3500 after the heater bolt broke off and ended up in the intake runner, luckily didn't get sucked into the cylinder. I also put in the pedal monster, makes the truck way more responsive when you want it to be
I love all the generalized statements in the comments! Example - “all 2019 + Rams are junk”, “modern diesels are no good”, etc….if most of you all actually used your truck you wouldn’t have any issues, but most people are driving 3500s to the grocery store

Considering the price on oil change isn’t it at every 15k miles? So considering that compared to a gas usually being every 5 k miles it’s probably more affordable at that point no? Assuming a oil change is about 80-100 on the low side.

It takes a lot of oil and it’s synthetic! What’s confusing about that? And what’s the issue with recalls? The manufacturer found something wrong and fixed it for free.

Why would you not correct for tire size before you even do actually start your calculation and open your mouth. " Might" is wrong word if you can see the tires are different the calculation is absolutely wrong get out your tape measure and use your fourth grade math.

I would have the thirsty DEF problem looked at. Preferably at a Cummins repair facility. I had a International with a Cummins that was drinking DEF. It was going thru 15 gallons every 2500 miles. They found an issue and fixed it. It now only uses about 7 gallons every 2500 miles. Which is what it was using when it was new.
I have a ‘21 it was thirsty, went to bulk def at the truck stop and now it sips def. I suspect all DEF isn’t equal.

I didn’t know changing the oil on a diesel was any different than on a gasoline engine… both have a plug, dipstick and filter.
It's actually easy on the Cummins. Filter can be reached through the front passenger wheel with a wrench. And, you don't need a jack to get underneath. So it's different than some... Because it's easier!

I just got my first modern diesel truck, loving it thus far. Maintenance is steep but the utility factor I get out of it its great. I need better suspension for my dirt riding.

My opinion, they should have kept the ZR2 longer because they could have done more videos. What they produced wasn’t enough.
Back to the Dodge Ram, only good move to use this thing is to use it as a trade in for the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado HD ZR2 or GMC Sierra HD AT4X. Those videos are worth watching then videos of this thing.

That oil change wasnt bad, just had my chevy express changed at Valvoline, Usually do myself but just havn't had time and was at 4k, $130.10, that was just oil 6QT and filter, must be the state where you live.
to just purchase the oil for my ram is $30 per gallon plus filter. and then disposal, so ya you got a deal.

On oil changes with a diesel truck you don’t have to change it but every 15,000 miles. I change mine once a year on my 05 Cummings. I drive 12,000 - 15,000 miles a year and Dodge tells me my oils is still good. I tell them to change it because it’s been 12 months sense my last oil change.
Ram should switch to a real 10-speed Allison transmission. They could then steal dales from GM by saying they have a real Allison transmission, unlike GM.
3 gallons of oil 5w40 full synthetic diesel oil, and a quality oil filter is over $110 just to buy the parts, so $159 plus sales text isn’t too bad for the convenience of someone else doing all the work and disposal of the old oil and filter. I wouldn’t complain about that price
Get rid of that def use only platinum blue def it doesn't crystalize. That's why I do my own oil changes with the best 100% synthetic oil Amsoil Signature Series.
for me Ram needs to add the DT cab already to the HDs... i hate the large bump or lack of floor space in the cab, also hate the short cab with no flat floor. most of all Ram needs to ditch the crap transmission and add ZF to Cummins. i had a few Rams, gas and diesel... if they update and add Hurricane 500 hp to the power wagon i'll be putting one in my driveway.
