Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
    It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
This Doctor REACTS video is a Christmas Special watching the very first episode of The Simpsons called Roasting on an Open Fire. This episode gives us a chance to talk about how Christmas can also be a really difficult period, particularly for people who struggle with their mental health. Loneliness is unfortunately so common and why we use the biopsychosocial model (not just a biomedical model) to treat mental illness.
I hope you have a peaceful and restful holiday period and more videos coming soon. Love you bye! X

The "Mother tattoo" might generally have some Freudian significance, but in Bart's case I think he just figured Marge would be less likely to punish him if it flattered her.

My sister (16 yrs older than me) used to sing that Postman Pat song! But the last two lines were different. Her last two lines were "Now poor Pat is crying, now there is no cat for Postman Pat" I used to find it the funniest thing ever even though I loved Pat. I think it's what started my love of parody lmao

Apparently because corporal punishment is not as approved as it was. But that has still been at least a few years coming.
Homers treatment of Bart kinda explains his personality as a child who doesn't exactly respect authority. So it is kind of psychologically sound.
But yeah don't hit or strangle your kids irl parents.

The Simpsons movie came out in 2007 in theatres and homer strangling Bart (and being a less than upstanding father/citizen) is a major plot point. Ned Flanders takes Bart fishing and when Bart accidently drops his rod into the lake, he instinctively braces for an expected punishment, then says "huh? You're not strangling me..." Later Flanders gives him a pat on the back, to which Bart says "...one more time." In other words, Bart has become accustomed to Homer essentially ignoring him aside from yelling and physical punishment when he makes mistakes. The implication is that Bart has never been patted on the back before.

Corporal punishment is not widely used in American schools -- less than 10% (less than 5% according to some measures). Still too many, but outlawed in many counties. Where it's still permitted is the rural South where the culture has been hard to change.

Merry Christmas, Dr. Elliott! One of my all-time favourite Simpsons episodes is also a Christmas one - "Marge Be Not Proud" from Season 7. It's the perfect mix of funny and heartfelt, and it explored Marge and Bart's relationship in a way we wouldn't often see.

I live in Rhode Island. We have a dog track called Lincoln Park. There are greyhound rescues for retired racing dogs. When I was a kid I worked at a stable where they boarded and kept a few Thoroughbred studs. I was 13 and worked really hard for one riding lesson per week worth $8 (it was the 80’s). It was kind of a shady place. The guy’s brother kept greyhounds in a kennel near where I dumped wheelbarrows full of horse dropping and old shavings. One day I saw a couple of them being trained by trotting alongside a slow moving truck with the driver holding their leashes. Another time I showed up for work to learn that one of the males has killed a pup during the night. It’s a pretty brutal business.
ETA: I did some quick research and although Lincoln Park still exist, now they use it for off-track betting on horse races. Greyhound racing is now illegal in at least 42 States. From what I can gather, the only State that has active dog racing is West Virginia.

Xmas is just a day off for me. I have no surviving immediate family and am struggling with opiate addiction. Last thing I need is drama from my judgemental relatives. At least I have a few friends. I don't have much in common with most of them, I don't care about sports (they do, fanatically), but they're good people.
I live alone, I party alone, and that's ok. For now. I have a home and a job. That's a start.

My father was a huge fan of corporal punishment. Real piece of work he was. Even the slightest infraction resulted in beating with whatever was handy or just used his fists from the age of 7 to 19. He was such a fan of corporal punishment that every teacher, principal, counselor, etc he ever met he gave permission to hit me. The second I graduated high school he kicked me out. He was a big fan of drinking too and his nationality seemed to change depending on whatever he was drinking. He was a huge compulsive liar as well.

I think dogs tended to not be as expensive back then because people kind of neglected them...growing up in a rural area in the 80s, if someone's dog got really sick they *might* take it to a vet, but if the treatment it needed was expensive they were more likely to just euthanize it. Or the owner would just shoot it. I remember people having their dogs "put to sleep" for things like broken legs, even.
Also, you usually got your dog from someone posted up in front of the grocery store with a bunch of puppies in a cardboard box, offering them to people going in to shop. Different times 🤷

The greyhound track in Iowa closed many years ago, still 1 horse track but i think it relies mostly on the casion now that came later, horse and dog racing wagering was approved first, then the riverboat casino games, then that eventually got expanded to ones on land

Merry Christmas (Eve) and Happy Holidays, Dr. Elliott. This is a classic episode, glad to see your thoughts on it. 1:35 I went to public school in the US and I would be very surprised if any school still employed something as crude as physical punishment, whatever teacher tried that would be just asking for a lawsuit. Perhaps it happens in a handful of hardcore private religious schools and I don't doubt that unfortunately many parents still use it, but thankfully the vast majority of schools have long since abandoned that sort of thing here.

Greyhound racing is still a thing in America they were bred for chasing and catching rabbits so as rabbit hunting has dropped in popularity these dogs still need to do what they were bred for and racing is a great outlet for them. A tirwd dog is a well behaved dog.

I've recommended this before, but it's Christmas so I'll ask you to look at the West Wing episode "Noel." It's all about how a government employee with a sensitive job (high security clearance) gets treatment for PTSD after being shot during an ******ination attempt (worried spelling out the word will get the comment flagged). Granted, it's too late to have it released for Christmas, but maybe next year.

It's true. In Germany "Knecht Ruprecht" is Santas helper. If you were a good child you get presents from Santa, or if you didn't you get the "Rute". A birch rod.
But let's be fair. No children gets a visit from Knecht Ruprecht if you catch my drift. It's more a loose threat to make them behave. Which reads written here, way worse than spoken in conversations.

Corporal punishment in public schools isn’t legal in America; my sister is a dean of an elementary school and works with children with disabilities stemming from trauma, and she is one of only a handful of adults who are certified in safely restraining a child who is in danger of harming themselves or others. I don’t know about private schools, though.
