I'm an American leftist who hates Trump, Bolsonaro, and all these other far-right authoritarians, but I have to say, I can totally understand and relate to the appeal of authoritarianism. It seems to me like democracy has failed us all in many ways. Our system of democracy has failed to protect the environment for future generations, failed to properly distribute the abundant wealth of the world in a just and equitable manner, and failed to protect the most vulnerable and marginalized people in our society from brutality and poverty. Sometimes, I lament that people are collectively too stupid and bigoted to be trusted to govern themselves. It just sucks that democracy, for all its flaws, is the best system I can think of to minimize corruption and abuse of power. I will confess that, in my wildest political fantasies, I imagine a global totalitarian government with the power to silence and re-educate fascists, to seize property from wealth-hoarding parasites, to guarantee as basic human rights all things that people need to live a healthy, happy life, to punish bigotry, to disarm everyone, to make the very idea of war obsolete, and to actively manage the environment for the benefit of the world and all of its people for generations to come. I want what is sometimes jokingly referred to as "fully-automated luxury gay space communism". Fortunately for anyone whom that idea terrifies, this system seems to only exist in the imaginations of right-wingers as a nightmare scenario. I am also aware that, despite my fantasies, I could not reasonably trust anyone promising such a world with the amount of power that it would take to create it not to be corrupted by that power and to make some harmful decisions that could not then be overturned. So, I find myself more frequently siding with anarchists and socialists, because at least we agree on dismantling unjust power structures and protecting the vulnerable. I also believe in doing what we can right now, in making incremental change where possible, rather than refusing to participate until someone finally starts "The Revolution". So, though I vehemently disagree with Democrats on a lot of stuff, in any election between one Democrat and one Republican, I always vote Democrat. I never sit out an election or a Democratic primary; I do my research and make whatever decision seems to best support a progressive move. I'm a member of the steering committee and treasurer of my local Democratic Socialists of America chapter. I have gone to concerned citizens meetings, protests, and rallies. There are many important issues, including ones on which I disagree with many of my fellow leftists, and we can find unlikely allies on some issues among those who will absolutely be our enemies on others. When it comes to the single issue of preventing America from descending immediately into fascism, I am willing to count as allies those moderate Republicans who are pledging to vote for Harris. I predict that the fight will never end and that things will get worse before they get better, and I am not confident that things will ever get better, but we have to keep learning, cooperating, and fighting for a better world, or else they will just get worse even faster.
Democracy hasn't failed everybody. In the EU it works well enough. Democracy has failed the U.S. because your lobbying system and insider trading among your politicians is the most agregious on the planet. Things that are allowed in the U.S. would land people in jail in the E.U.
Thinks of it this way agiar2000. When the personal computer was first coming into its own in 1980, I remember reading a great poster that sums up our democracy or any democracy around the world. The poster read GIGO=garbage in, garbage out. To err is human, but to really fuck things up requires a computer. We need to get rid of citizens united laws, and similar corporatocracy type laws that have been put into place since then. Corporations have been rap[]ing the people of the United States for far too long. This year as well was what might be considered as the final straw. Thank you again for this. I enjoyed it when new. Hindsight for me is that I never tried communicating with my MEP, or wrote to media about importance of Directives and how horrible was MEP Nigel Farage. I felt at Brexit-time that it was a bad idea but votes against Brexit were reaonable and boring, while arguers for Brexit shouted about immigrants and gigantic savings. These feelings came back watching your election: Kamala brought forth good arguments and policies that were not listened to by those who listened to Drumpf bringing forth arguments about immigrants eating cats.
Here in October 2024, the clips of trump being a "Weird, weird man" are actually charming in comparison to what he's up to now. 39 minutes of swaying, clapping offbeat and doing his J.O. dance at a town hall where people were passing out from the heat is the new weird. Let's hope he fades into obscurity or ideally, goes to prison before the next 4 years is up.
The information in this video is VERY important today, considering the current state of things in the world and in the United States! 12:25 The Authoritarianism segment starts. 19:47 Authoritarians hate journalists! Why? Those who do evil fear the light, lest their works become known! This is frequently cited as the reason for the phrase "the first casualty of war is the truth." Instead, there's misinformation, propaganda, cover-ups, murdered journalists, biased reporting or no reporting at all. Then, the winners of a conflict write their version of the cause of the war, what was done and why they believed that all actions they took in it were justified. 21:02 Authoritarian checklist: Projecting strength, demonising enemies, dismantling institutions so there's no checks on what they do. 23:15 The quote "it is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep" that Donald J. Trump believed was worth sharing was from Mussolini!! Anyone remember Trump also saying that if he was elected president again, he'd be a dictator on his first day? Get the picture? 24:40 Trump saying "I'm gonna bomb the sh*t out of them!" "I'd like to punch him in the face." "We're gonna load it up with bad dudes." "Torture works." He then said he wouldn't kill reporters but he really hates them and calls them disgusting. And, people want to give him the launch codes for nuclear weapons and let him be commander-in-chief of America's military, which includes the U.S. Navy's SEAL teams?? 29:28 And now, this. The authoritarian part is over. Silliness ensues. #authoritarianism #authoritarians #authoritarian #authoritarianchecklist

Seeing season 5 dropped instantly made the week better 🙌🏻
Why is a cop like you watching John Oliver
As a police brutality survivor, I see your blue stripe profile pic as an act of extreme malice and ignorance. I hope you never experience what I have but part of me thinks that the only way you will understand how bad the police are in the USA is if you get to deal with it firsthand~
@@queerredguard I'm sure there are good cops that don't prescribe to the ignorance and the state violence. Don't be part of the reason a good cop grows hateful.
@@nhoj30 I'm sorry for whatever injustice or violence you suffered under their hands. Some of them either don't know; don't care; don't understand; or downright enjoy knowing that the flag of freedom they commandeered and now fly has become a symbol of oppression; corruption; and hate. The worms will eat them too.
@@schan9547 Good cops don't exist because they either join the gang or get fired, sympathy for cops is a symptom of deep hatred for minorities.
T-rump (2024) update: he's still horrible.
Gdawg looks like Alex Baldwin.
Loving these flashbacks to We Underestimated the Horror....
If your site gets blocked in a country, you're doing something right.
This is depressing to watch after the last election
Leave it to DJT...😂
He wants really great climate -- and he has a concept of a plan.
they had to use wax models in case Armie Hammer got hungry
aaawwww... i miss gilbert ... rip
the first people killed by Hissler, 1933, were comedians, the Swiss banking law is based on this now, because they gave under the law the banking records of comedians in the newspapers, bank records under the stipulation he would just stop them. He executed all of them.
now, its illegal for any branch of the government to obtain bank records, and legal to have a bank account under the name 1823587634548732 ...
He almost said "I love Mussolini" but stopped himself at the last second.
It’s a baby moose pasta dish, amirite?
Put the date on these shows at the top.
it says S 5 in the title
@@Rowsy91😂
It’s in the description
The past is prologue
Thank you again for this. I enjoyed it when new. Hindsight for me is that I never tried communicating with my MEP, or wrote to media about importance of Directives and how horrible was MEP Nigel Farage. I felt at Brexit-time that it was a bad idea but votes against Brexit were reaonable and boring, while arguers for Brexit shouted about immigrants and gigantic savings. These feelings came back watching your election: Kamala brought forth good arguments and policies that were not listened to by those who listened to Drumpf bringing forth arguments about immigrants eating cats.
I'm late for work now... Why isn't this movie out yet...?
I live in Boise and desperately want to see the clip of Gilbert reading yelp reviews
Trump tweeting about election fraud at the 2018 midterms didn’t age well…
@4:46 the baby at 11 o'clock is 100% a wwe babyface
I miss Gilbert Gottfried so much
That movie trailer is utterly prezposterous.
As trump always days, "i know lots of words".....yes, but they are always the wrong ones....
This episode should be shown to all your Trump loving relatives. If this doesn't wake them, nothing will.
I guarantee Trump never saw Duterte 's. Christmas message. He wouldn't be able to help himself from copying it.
