As for Misato, taking a bullet wouldn’t be enough for me to forgive nor accept an apology if your gonna die right after I go save Asuka and stop my Dad when you were one of the only two people, I wondered why that hated me? You kill your self and I don’t get to see again when someone else could’ve done it or some other way was possible? Such terrible writing .
The only time she's stopped being cheerful is when Third Impact resumed initially, when Rei Q pissed off from Wunder with nary a peep and saving Shinji from 13.
That jump into the gap with the opening rift of God's Gift playing is soooo good. 3.33 may have some narrative issues but visually it's an absolute treat.

The issue I have with Mari is she treats everything like a game, even when she's on the verge of death or the world is about to end. She sucks out all of the urgency in a scene. If the characters aren't taking the conflict seriously then why would the audience?

Maybe there's something I'm missing here - this is Anno we're talking about - but Mari's presence just takes the immersion out of every scene; don't get me wrong, when it came to the movies I had problems with the dialogue being nothing but exposition and doom-and-gloom, but if that style of conveying the plot was consistent then I could at least suspend my disbelief and enjoy the show for what it is. But then Mari comes in like a happy-go-lucky, insufferable wrecking ball and *it all returns to nothing.*
i don't think that's an issue, i think it's her purpose. she's a carefree, self-confident person, unencumbered by the burdens of anyone else around her, and i think the movies are positing that as a good thing. for the love of god, no matter how dark things get, you shouldn't let your levity die. if you find her annoying, like, i get it, but i think that's the idea they were going for :p
