My swing is exactly like you demonstrate in this video, coming from above. Really good explanation of what I need to change up in my swing, appreciate it!
This tip is Gold 🥇. I've always been too upright and even when I think I've fixed it, muscle memory takes me back to upright. Can't wait for the range to put this in practice.
Great stuff Chris..that is a perfect way to feel the butt of the shaft over your trail heel in the back swing..plus I really like the wall drill thank s Chris
Great content, well explained. I notice that golfer, esp. lady golfer, who has high and deep backswing with straight left arm always has a very good looking swing.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 you make it sound so easy 😂 can’t wait to get to the range and start practicing. Watched so many of your videos in lockdown and think I understand now how to fix my over the top, divot off to the left and fade as a good one and slice as my bad one! Thank you!!
Excellent tips Chris! Sums up my driver issues. I wonder if the depth required for efficient ball strike with irons clubs should mirror the one for the driver?
Hi Chris, great video, you are very good at making a complex subject sound simple. Quick question, given you primarily talk about bringing depth into the swing for driving, should this swing change also be implemented for iron play?
Chris, one ask, occasionally you show a split screen when you hit a shot to finish the video, side and rear view together, I really find this helpful, I watch this split screen several times over and I personally feel it shows ‘ all aspects of the swing’ weight shift turn etc and helps me understand better . I hope this makes sense. Secondly, I’ve just purchased my first ever driver after playing for almost 3 years, and at the moment I find it a big challenge , so the more driver content the better, keep up the excellent work
Thanks for the tip. Comparing the driver to the irons, we seek to achieve a descending blow to the ball in order to bottom out the club in front of the ball by leaning left and turning right in the back swing. Do we have a different object when striking the ball with the driver?
Great video. Just wondering, making the fixes like Chris does produces a right to left shot but the title says this is to get a straighter shot? Will making this depth change help straighten shots?
Great video as always. The wall/curtain drill is especially useful. Off topic, but do you happen to know if there is a “Chris Ryan of tennis”? I really need help with my serve.
Great video but is it a problem if your hands go too far past your right heel (for a righty)? This is the opposite problem of not getting hands deep enough. Will your wall drill help with that? Thanks.
Hi Chris. Thanks for the video. In terms of terminology, would you see "Depth" as similar to "Flat"?? Have heard some advice the opposite to yours hear with the idea that taking the ball away higher allows you to loop under and on the inside on the way down. But I've never found that to work very well for me in practice
Very important topic. A word of caution from personal experience: don't forget about height in your effort to get depth! I was told by a couple of pros that I needed more depth in my swing (which was true), but I tried to fix it in the wrong way. I tried to get my depth too early in the takeaway, with the result that I ended up with an arm plane at top of backswing that was below my shoulder line and the shaft too steep (cupped left wrist). I was leaving my hands low and reaching my arms behind me as I turned away from the ball before raising them. The other problem with that hand path was that it moved almost vertical toward the top of the swing, such that my hands were traveling outward in transition, effectively negating the depth I had created early in the backswing. Chris, I think you have another depth video that addresses hand path and plane. I have only recently begun to try to fix that backswing fault. The trail heel is key. Allowing my hands to travel away in a steady arc in the backswing, coupled with a full turn, gives me both the height and depth I need.
Great points, I always advise my students to focus 75% on what your trying to achieve, but leave 25% of ficus to ensure bad habits or faults aren’t creeping in 👍
I have some shoulder problems and had to reduce my backswing. I haven't really lost distance. I can't raise my right arm high but I was able to reach back to lengthen m swing. As long as there's enough length (Up or back) in the backswing, there's plenty of power. A great example is Tony Finau.
Greetings from South Africa, my swing is very upright and the shaft tends to cross the line on the top. I hope this tip will assist me. Any thoughts please.
Chris. My swing is consistently inside out 1-2* (tracman) I have a straight to push draw stock shape, but lately (within the last couple months) ONLY with driver, Im struggleing to keep the face where I need it at impact (slightly open). Track man is showing the face open 10* on average and its causing a HORRIBLE slice. Im extremely unsure what Im doing wrong. I thought at first I was getting stuck but releasing earlier is excentuating the miss. I strengthened grip in lead hand and have not noticed any difference. Swing plane has remained 1-2* in to out and Im at a loss. Any insight?
Great drill against the wall, thanks. By the way Chris, you are a tiny bit across the line at the top. Is that fine or bad and what kind of influence would that have regarding to the transition and downswing? My junior is very easy to get across the line and is very difficult to correct that. It seems that the club would reroute/ make a tiny loop in the transition. She hits it inside out alright, but too much so I am afraid.
Yeah I’ve always had that in my swing, it’s better now than it has been, but still there. For me it causes the shaft to shallow late, I can get my club stuck behind me and hit blocks and hooks. For me, when I can get it more neutral at the top it’s much better 👍
Thanks, Chris, for your views on across the line. Since it would cause certain issues for transition, why don't you do a video to teach people how not to get over the line? Thanks! And for what reasons such an issue is so difficult to correct? Is it kind of natural move for some people's joints?
Why do I feel like it's so difficult for me to get off my right heel. I end up always with right to left curves. Wish you would do a video on the opposite problem of the cut shot that you demonstrate in this video please.
It could well be that you are taking the club too far back, related but that sounds more like swing length and this is more the shape of the swing, tough to say without seeing the swing I’m afraid
A few things you can do, close the stance, flare the feet, rotate the head away from the target more, lift the lead heel. These are all great ways to encourage more turn 👍
The drill made me realize that I am too bent over at address, so I wasn’t able to get anywhere near the wall. I need to stand a little taller at address.
@@ChrisRyanGolf ok Craig Stadler then. Just saying you can play amazing golf from that position. My buddy chuck comes over the top and kicks my ass all the time.
Finally someone who explains it the best and provides a drill to help with over the top. Thank you.
Another great lesson, enhanced by the insight of a drill that helps us to achieve the objective.
Top marks! Thank you Chris.
Appreciate it as always 👍👍
Another fantastic and simple lesson Chris. Thank you.
Thanks Ben

I never thought of depth before in my swing. Thanks for this.
No problem! Thanks Peter
This will help me a lot, thanks for posting this type of videos
This is the best I've seen you drive the ball Chris. Awesomeness 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks Chris, I fall into this move so often and wonder why I hit so many push cuts...
Great video, instant feedback on the wall drill just how more turn i actually needed !!
Great stuff Chris..that is a perfect way to feel the butt of the shaft over your trail heel in the back swing..plus I really like the wall drill thank s Chris
Nice easy to do practice exercise. Thanks.
Thanks John 👍

Love it! The first stage of changing your swing is to understand your swing, sounds like you do so roll on the 29th!!
Right on for the home exercise at the end! 🙏🏾

Hey Chris,
When you talk about getting our weight back on our heal, would that apply to all clubs? Thanks for the great content,
Hey Lisa, yes that move would apply to all clubs, maybe more so with the driver but similar through the bag

Yes. Excellent. So easy to forget depth and drift into being too upright
True Martin, I see it all the time, hard to recover from there
i'll be attempting this when the courses open again next week. thanks for the clear guidance.

Hi
Happy Saint Patrick's day everyone ☘☘🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Why do I feel like it's so difficult for me to get off my right heel. I end up always with right to left curves. Wish you would do a video on the opposite problem of the cut shot that you demonstrate in this video please.
Hey Chris. I take lessons my instructor tells me I finish my back swing too far back. Says I am over rotating, how is this different?
It could well be that you are taking the club too far back, related but that sounds more like swing length and this is more the shape of the swing, tough to say without seeing the swing I’m afraid
I find myself being severely under plane in the backswing, more or less on plane in the down swing. Any tips?
Everyone’s backswing is a blend of inward and upwards, if you need more upwards then this com from the arms so just try to work those more up 👍
Happy Wednesday
When my arms go up by that much using driver I get poor inconsistent contact. I find keeping my hands low gives me better contact.
What do you suggest if you don't have enough flexibility to get back like that?
A few things you can do, close the stance, flare the feet, rotate the head away from the target more, lift the lead heel. These are all great ways to encourage more turn 👍
Chris, are you trolling your American viewers with those Ryder Cup pictures behind you? Ouch! Lol. Great video as usual, thanks.
Haha, it was a topic of discussion! It’s a friends coaching studio and he did comment that it was very maybe a European led wall 😂
665 likes...no way in hell I'm hitting thumbs up...but excellent lesson Chris
The drill made me realize that I am too bent over at address, so I wasn’t able to get anywhere near the wall. I need to stand a little taller at address.
Yes more bent over limits mobility 👍
we'll see this morning how this works in practice.
Hope it helps
@@ChrisRyanGolf came in third in the first tournament of the season .. sadly played like a true hacker .. just everyone else was worse.
Perfect video after the bananas I was hitting yesterday
Hope it helps
when I have depth-- I blocked shots straight right :(- I suck!!
That’s a good sign! Mean you can begin to add a load of rotation which will neutralise this and add the speed, perfect place to start from 👊
@@ChrisRyanGolf Thank you so much!!
If you don't get your hands in and high, you are Jack Nicklaus
Jack’s hands didn’t work inwards???
@@ChrisRyanGolf ok Craig Stadler then. Just saying you can play amazing golf from that position. My buddy chuck comes over the top and kicks my ass all the time.
Why do all golf coaches look the same?
Not too sure, there are some great female coaches out there who I think look a little different to me 😂
Not for me that one,
