Love the expression of huh.... surprising yourself is a nice surprise when our work turns out better than we thought it would. . The suicide bit we tended to use when a micro stop wont fit, knowing were crazy and could really kill the part with a bad countersink :)
Don't know what the manual says but we always installed skins and rivets "wet" with sealant. Never had an issue other than sealant on your tools. Good job. I do enjoy your videos.
Thanks! The plans have you clecoing and leaving to set for a couple of days before riveting. I've read people do it wet as wet, though. I've also read where people let if set a day or two before riveting even tank parts, though it seems like riveting wet makes more sense when it needs to seal in a liquid.
Great channel sir. Im about to put the -10 rudder together here. Did you use a 2x or 3x? I have only an ATS 3x but I feel comfortable with it on the -3'
Great video! I just took delivery of my -10 Emp on the 6th. Hope to get it unpacked and inventory completed this week. Keep up the nice work and I appreciate the detailed videos. Very helpful!
Hi, the back rivet plate I have is 16" X 4" X 1/4". I honestly don't know if it's hot or cold rolled, but I bought it from Cleaveland Tool here: www.cleavelandtool.com/products/16-back-rivet-plate?_pos=1&_sid=efe711a86&_ss=r
I turned it down a bit as well, though I can’t remember how much now. I’ll have to “rediscover” the sweet spot for me when I get to the elevator TEs. I bought a couple more of the practice kits to have something to relearn on, since at the rate I’m going, it will have been a long time ;-)
Hey good video. My empennage kit just arrived. I have been fretting over this process and reading everything I can on it. I’d like to use the 3m tape. What are your thoughts on one v the other (proseal)? I also have the special squeezer set and I think I’d like to squeeze them. Thoughts?
I used 3M tape and the special set on my priactice kit. The tape worked, but what I didn't like as much about it was that it was "binary" if that makes sense. Once it sticks, you can't mush it around at all. If you need to adjust it, you have to pull it back apart (which is not hard) and try again. With the sealant, you can squish things around and get it set the way you want it and then cleco and weigh it down. As for the squeezer set, it worked great on the practice kit, but I chose to try the gun on the rudder and it was not nearly as difficult as I thought it might be. As with a lot on this project, many things that I think are going to be tough are not so bad, and things I think will be a piece of cake have complications. Let me know what you decide to use - I'd love the additional feedback!
@@missiletwentynine2667 thank you for the reply. I will definitely let you know how it goes and what I use. Right now I am leading towards the tape. I’m going to call 3m and see if I can stick the tape in the freezer for a bit before applying it so I can unstick it pretty easily if needed. The squeezer set worked well on the practice airfoil for me. My only concern with it is possible local warping because the pressure is so precise. But I guess we will see. I’m on hold currently due to some back ordered parts.
@@missiletwentynine2667 update for ya, I called and spoke with 3M. They advised that placing the tape in the freezer was a bad idea since it is below the adhesive storage temperature and that it would make the adhesive brittle. They said that as long as you don’t apply 15 pounds of force to the tape that it won’t bond so that you could reposition it as long as you don’t apply that force.

Exciting! Hope you got it all unpacked and inventoried and organized. Even that part was fun for me!
What was the size, thickness, and hot or cold rolled back rivet plate you used. Does the type of metal it's made of matter? Thanks for the video

The plans say to turn the gun pressure down when initially setting these rivets. I found that worked great.

@@flyyourdream9716 Good idea with the freezer - let me know how it works!
