that isn't true.. Courtney originally was cast for the role of Rachel but requested to switch after reading the script. Also, she could not have felt in the shadow due to ross and Rachels romance, because that plot was not even intended. Originally, Monica and Joey were going to be the main relationship, but the producers saw Jennifer and Shwimmers chemistry and changed it

I’ve always loved the scene where Joey realizes Monica and Chandler we’re together and he points at them with his mouth hung open. Also when they reprimand chandler for smoking so he points out their flaws and pits them against each other. Those scenes always make me laugh to the point I can’t breathe. I watched friends growing up and Chandler really shaped my sense of humor. In my house sarcasm didn’t happen you took everything for face value. So he basically shaped an important part of me.
Matt LeBlanc was the best part of that show. He should have won more awards. Thinking back on some of the best lines, they were always delivered by “Joey.”

I recently re-watched the show. I can't believe I used to idolize Ross and Rachel's relationship. They're a train-wreck!!
Chandler and Monica's relationship is far better, with realistic ups and downs true to any relationship, but their love and loyalty to each other stays constant.
No offense, but why would you idolize a relationship in a situation COMEDY, versus a drama?? Sit-com characters are basically 1/3 cartoon characters, 2/3 human. Just my opinion.

So many great moments in friends... "pivot!" But one of them was when Ross was playing the bagpipes version of Celebration and he stops and asks the others to sing along and Phoebe mimics the sound of the bagpipes with this high pitched "eeeeeeee" you can see Jen barely keep control in the background 🤣
If Ms. Kudrow really felt that way it's surprising. "Phoebe" was an original, larger than life character. Kudrow's height is what I noticed; it made her stand out and suited the unusual role.
Actually, though tall-ish, she is not crazy tall at 5'8". I think Cox and Aniston are just that much shorter and petite.
I've heard the story many times that they offered CC the role of Rachel, but she wanted to play Monica. Wonder if this guy is wrong, or everyone else is.

I don't know if Monica part is true. I have heard several, several times that monica was actually offered Rachel's role originally but when she read the script for Monica, she favoured that as she was close to her in personality. I have also heard that Pheebs never hated the role. Just found it difficult to do and changed it as the show went.

Courteney never wanted to play Rachel, Martha Kaufman said that Courteney stated she had nothing related to Rachel and was more of a Monica. But the directors thought Courteney would better fit playing Rachel because of her undeniable looks.(since Rachel was a fashionista) Since Courteney was not happy they switched the roles.

Paul Rudd deserves a worthy mention. He just totally fit in. You know in How I Met Your Mother, they pushed the Mother so hard in the last season, that all the main stars connected and loved her. It felt too fake and forced. Nobody bought it, even the show producers didn't buy it because after her death, it continued all funny and normal with bets etc. Mike on the other hand absolutely fit right in with Phoebe. He had no connection to anybody else, got randomly chosen in the coffee shop, was weird enough to win Phoebe, they even broke up, missed each other, and then he had to come back after Monica told him to stop the crap about not wanting to marry her, to finally stepping up to the plate. --AND LOL. He and Ross, you know when your friend has a boyfriend/girlfriend and no matter what your interactions with them is weird? That was funny as hell. Especially when Ross was going for a handshake and MIke hugged him LOL. Any door he opened Ross was there too XD. Then when he and Phoebe had broken up he walked by the Friends and Joey was like "Uh bye Mike!!!" and everyone else responded in kind. It was not the kind of break up where they detested Mike and chose Phoebe, they obviously had to choose their friend but they totally had nothing against Mike. He naturally fit in with them. And that is a dynamic you see in real friend groups. Sometimes someone has a partner and they just don't mesh and when they break up you're overjoyed, whereas one of them brings in a partner who just feels natural and worthy of being there, and if they break up, you kind of root for them to get back together secretly. Paul Rudd was such a character.
I never liked his role on Friends. His acting felt so weak, like he put no effort into it. And then the ending, where Phoebe was rude to David and married Mike instead felt so wrong. Phoebe wouldn't have done that, especially to David, who was consistently touted as her One.
@@aewtx I think it would be too predictible and a little farfetched if she ended up with David. It would've worked out like this, right? He would've left her for a job in Russia. Several years later he'd ve returned, and she'd be right there, single, waiting for him. Everything would've worked out perfectly because they loved each other and he was the chosen one for her. Is that correct? Well... that doesn't feel real to me, at all. In real life, we pay for our choices, and things don't fit perfectly. Even though they were great together and were theoretically made for each other, Phoebe met another guy while David was away, and fell in love with him.
I'm definitely not judging David. I think it was a really hard decision, and he made his totally valid choice with Phoebe's encouragement, by the way. However, that choice implied on giving up on Phoebe. To be fair, I liked David's character, and I think the writers were really cruel with him, because in the end, he gave up on Phoebe for his research and it led to nothing. He ended up failing on his research and losing Phoebe. They could've at least made his research be sucessful.

@@danc3693 Well... obviously, sit-coms aren't supposed to be 100% realistic, but they aren't meant to be clusters of meaningless gags and joke scenes either. Although they're mostly light hearted comedies, they still do have storylines with considerable commitment to realism and drama.
We all want more of Chandler! A new show called “Chandler” where he plays an older Chandler. Please!!!

10:05 What a relief to know, that Matt and Jennifer hated the Joey and Rachel storyline as much as most of the fans did & still do. It was incredibly stupid and ruined Joey's character especially, just like Matt said : ''Joey wouldn't do it''. He was too good of a friend to Ross, to do smth like this, not to mention he wasn't made for stable, mature relationships with women, period. And Jen was also right - there was never real love between the two. It wasn't even a fling. They shared only maybe three kisses and it clearly looked like a simple infatuation, because when it came down to it, neither Joey nor Rachel even managed to break the "friendship" barrier and sleep with each other. Why ? Because they never really fell in love, in the romantic sense of the word, they never even said it to each other. If they really fell in love and wanted each other, nothing would stop them from consuming this relationship, just as nothing had stopped Rachel and Ross in the past, from breaking the 'friendship' barrier. And why didn't anything stop Ross and Rachel? Because it was true love, always more than friendship or infatuation. And of course, at the end of the show, both Ross and Rachel finally admitted that they had always only loved each other. It's great that they got back together, but it's a shame it didn't happen sooner, they should have gotten back to each other years earlier.
Lisa kudrows laugh is so infectious! I love Phoebe and Chandler...........They cast everyone perfectly!
What a lot of people don't seem to grasp is that the writers put the Rachel/Joey relationship into the show as an example of how even if there is mutual attraction, you can be in a relationship with the wrong person.
But it was all so... artificially done. They both could've decided one way or another before the end of season 10. And it only made me dislike the characters.
It felt very unnatural. They never had romantic chemistry. But more like brother-sister dynamic. Joey could fit with Monica then, but Rachel and Phoebe more like sisters

They were perfect choices. I wouldn't change anything except the end. It should have had more seasons.

Phoebe was never stupid, although she wasn't always as empathetic as the other characters. Something I only realized as an adult.
The actors fit their characters perfectly. Together they made “friends” an iconic sitcom. I hope continued success for all of them.
