You and Allie are the best! Never giving up on conquering your demons! It is a long-term journey! So glad you are there to support each other. You still find reasons to laugh along the way during the most disappointing circumstances.
Well done Spencer! I’ve never been a fan of showing up to race only when I’m in the best shape ever to run a best time . . . “ Failure is the highway to success!” If the marathon master can have an off day at Boston and be okay with it then you are in great company because he’ll be back and you will too! The biggest difference I see is your attitude and perspective - so proud of you!
Yes but also no. I am an amateur woman and go to races yes for improve myself but also to enjoy them, no one pays me to race. I run track but when i feel i can't compete at a decent level for my self i don't show up. It usually when my period start so knowing it i don't plan racing around that time. Don't bother bad weather, it is affect everyone in the race so..
Hey Spencer, I like your resilience even in the face of disappointment. Having aspirations and striving for them is what life is all about. The positivity that you model makes it possible to persevere and pursue our goals.
Still so proud of you Spencer! Keep your head up and keep looking forward. You’re still such an inspiration to me and so many people for your work ethic and for your will to never give up 😌
So awesome to have the Special cam to show you running the whole thing. It stinks when the person you’re interested in isn’t at the front and whoever is filming the event only gets the lead runner in frame. And you’re right, most epic performances are on the other side of a lot of 💩races and workouts. Be patient, do the work, results will come.
Spencer I had a terrible race myself recently as well, was on pace to get a marathon PR up until mile 22 then I bonked big-time. Just using that as motivation because I signed up for my next marathon later that same day
Not sure if it’s too far of a drive BUT come race at John Hay distance festival in west Chester PA on Friday night, June 2nd. Lots of awesome races, 800s and mile heats
I can relate. I did a 5k race yesterday when I wasn't in the mood. I decided not to race hard and do it as a training run, which was a good decision, but I hate my result and keep trying to guess what it would have been if I'd tried. I still felt sick from the level of exertion later that day and spent hours questioning everything about running afterwards. (Oh and traffic on the way home was terrible and it took way too long). Racing sucks and I can't wait to do it again.
It seems like you might have increased your threshold training which is lower intensity form of interval training but you didn't use this decrease in intensity to increase your volume. Renato Canova has some good ideas about building in progression into threshold based programs with techniques to lower threshold to get as close to race pace as possible i.e. the programming around threshold has to be built to express the principle of progressive overload in volume/duration/recovery/velocity of threshold. A simple substitution of threshold for v02 max training doesn't work. Threshold by itself is not a magic bullet. Basically it should enable greater volume. You need to be running about 130km a week as a miler.
Anyone who has trained and raced seriously for a prolonged period has completely c**p races. Inevitable. The key is to get over it and move on. If, as you say, you were ill when you raced no further explanation is necessary. You never know if you are slightly under the weather until the pressure comes on at the crucial stage of the race. You looked OK for 500m then things fell apart and the wheels came off, S**t happens. As soon as I stated running seriously (in the early 1970s!) the best advice I was given was "there's always another race". Don't get too emotionally carried away by really good or really bad races. Focus on the next race, work hard, move on, learn from the race but don't dwell on it too long..
I believe it is in our lowest moments in this life that God speaks to us. For years I failed at trying to be a university professor. It was painful but there was the voice of God in those years of failure. The dark night won't last forever. The dawn sunlight will rise.
At least you can commiserate with each other about these temp setbacks. Have some kimchi, sauerkraut or fermented food each day for a week to get your gut back in order.
Might be worth going to see a sports psychologist about how you approach race days. Shouldnt have to dread it so much, they should be able to help you enjoy the process
the last time I shit 10 times in 1 day I went to the doctor and ended up with a ulcerative colitis diagnosis a few weeks later. i hope it's nothing like that for you
I'm a big fan of spence, I've been watching him since his running days back in Georgetown. I would say maybe move up to the 10k or even half marathon. I haven't been super consistent with his RUclips channel for almost over a year, but I would say that would be a smart move to make. I feel like he would be much stronger at the longer distances. But hey what do I know about pro running.
Sick Yoda-level running channel you have there, spicy-take master. Also sick: your best college 1500 was 17 seconds slower than what Spence just ran. Should you be delivering such spice when this is your own quote from an article you were in on half-marathon: “I never even scored in a conference (track) meet,” Longen joked. “I was bottom of the barrel in college, pretty average and nothing special.” Prolly not.
I know you're running slower than you'd like and ya maybe you can improve on training and a lot of things but running 4:10 mile pace is still pretty incredible. Keep it up and keep going
This might sound harsh but i think im on to something . I think i know why you suck at racing. Its not racing itself, its racing on the track and all that comes with it. From the moment you broke 4 in the mile you haven’t been the same. Ever since that race you have been scared to fail or disappoint your subscribers. And all you have been doing is failing as a result. I think you should move to the roads cause your last xc season in college was fantastic and every time you race the turkey trot in your hometown you crush it! Running fast on the track has become this all consuming fire that has been eating away at you for years and its simply not working. Obviously do what you want, but i think you should consider doing more road races cause your good at that. Also that might give you some more confidence to hit the track and do well later on.
Change scenery--move away from Seattle. Just concentrate on the 800 for this year--trying to double major isn't working. Try increasing the low intensity volume stuff like Allie does with cross training to avoid injury--you really aren't doing enough low intenity volume to significantly upgrade your aerobic capcity vs what tou did at Gtwn and Beasts. Your 800 opener was good all things considered-build on that
I'm not sure, but from checking your hair and face skin, I don't think you have looked healthy in the past year or two. I'm not an expert, but try to take care of your nutrition. Keep up the good work.
Granted, I know nothing and am not an expert in anything. But the first thought in my mind is - are you more interested in proving that you know more about racing than your father and that your "wisdom" and knowledge is greater than his? Or are you more interested in actually being competitive regardless of where you get your training advice from? It just seems as though you tend to disrespect and diminish your father and go out of your way to ignore and reject his advice.
I think Spencer could be top class half marathon runner. He has the speed, has the endurance. Has the genes! Why not make some money on the roads. Is it worth chasing mid 330s 1500 when sub 65 half marathon will win a lot of races
@John Cena With higher mileage. The ability is there. Hit 90 mpw for several months with race specific training and a 4 min miler with his 5m and 10k regional xc performances could do it
I follow you for the transparency and the journey! Proud of you SPENCE!!
You and Allie are the best! Never giving up on conquering your demons! It is a long-term journey! So glad you are there to support each other. You still find reasons to laugh along the way during the most disappointing circumstances.
You’ll be remembering this when you upload “The Best 1500m Race I’ve Ever Had” 💪🏼

You’re awesome- great lessons for us all! Never give up!
Best video in a longtime. Your mental strength is it. Thanks for being a good role model!
Hey Spencer, I like your resilience even in the face of disappointment. Having aspirations and striving for them is what life is all about. The positivity that you model makes it possible to persevere and pursue our goals.
My running is going through a bad patch as well - a useful reminder to keep grinding and believe it will come good
Hey Good Job Man! Never let the bad times get to you, your doing great just keep pushing on!
Wow! What a rough couple of days. I admire your perseverance and honesty. Best of luck in your next race.
Big Papa KEITH! Speech, Speech, Speech…. 💯 🙌🏼
Me and you too brother. Opening up with a slow time in your main event is a little disheartening but you have to keep pushing.
Great video! Great attitude Spence! One bad race learn what can from it and move on. As long as you vlog I will watch👍
Still so proud of you Spencer! Keep your head up and keep looking forward. You’re still such an inspiration to me and so many people for your work ethic and for your will to never give up 😌
Great Spencer,
Proud of you.Positive outlook.Just keep hammering.
I hope you can find the joy in running & racing. I know race day comes w nerves/anxiety, but also hoping you find it exciting & joyful as well.

I really do admire you
Thank you for the video and the raw truth

Life is a roller coaster, got to ride it to see the good fimes!
Hey man, dont put your head down. Remember that everything happens for a reason and the lord will help you!!
I love the 1500m🎉
Great video Spencer. Too bad Allie wasn’t filming when you got hit. That would have been epic. Keep working and keep getting on that line!!

Good post. Also the milers that are having success with a lot of threshold work are still doing race pace weekly.
Change to longer distances?
Sometimes you get it, sometimes you get got. If the tummy ain't happy, it's not happening.
"rear-ended".. and then Allie laughs haha :D
The blurring of Allies shoes 👀

You can't trust the process when the process is broken.
Need the reaction from your dad!
Zwift is awesome! Pretty fast 1500m for Mario! I know what a rut feels like and you will get through this.
I'm so confused by the perfect blur on Allie's shoes at 1:54. Lol why not just cut that shot out?
You actually ran a couple of seconds faster than I guessed you would...based on the "training" you have done. Cant run sub-4 by training at 420 pace
Awesome race Spencer what track race was that Awesome job
I agreed trust the process! 🙌🏽🏃🏽♀️
You are amazing!
Keep on truckin’
have you thought about changing distances maybe a half or full marathon?
I have found out through experience to Never drink milk before training.
Good point. Overall I'm quite skeptical about milk and milk products to begin with.
Gotta dust off the rust first! Lets go Spenceee
Come on Spencer! I believe in you!!!
🫶🏽keep it up good sir, you inspire a lot of us
On to the next race!
Legend

"For when I am weak, then I am strong"
Why'd you have to censor the toes :(
Worst runs give lessons. Never regret a single race.
Every time Allie shouted, he tried harder.❤
It would be good to work in some 600’s at current mile pace with short rest. Like 4X600 at mile pace with just 2:00 rest. Keep it up!
At least you can commiserate with each other about these temp setbacks. Have some kimchi, sauerkraut or fermented food each day for a week to get your gut back in order.
Get rid of the dairy for a month and see how your inflammation and digestion issues are. Thanks for allowing us to be part of your journey.
Rust buster bro all good
You think you’re getting more lactose intolerant as you get older and need to reduce dairy intake?
Zero speed endurance
you're still a 1:52 at least rn! don't worry about it dude, you're just getting back, you till have dust to flick off
Keep it going!!!
legin stretching helps with gastro problems, no major equipment needed
Lajin
Love you Spencer

Dad will get you back right if you have him as your coach again
the last time I shit 10 times in 1 day I went to the doctor and ended up with a ulcerative colitis diagnosis a few weeks later. i hope it's nothing like that for you
never give up
Respect
Look at it this way... the only way is up...
When you fall off a bike- get back on and ride again...
Good luck in two weeks...

I agree tbh, especially the marathon or half marathon. The footspeed is there to pull off a sit and kick strategy which helps a ton at the pro level.
Good stuff Spence. What we need now is the youtube.com/@apexpxl collab video where you race against the BMW 1 Series.
Spence, you should quit the Xendurance if you have gut problems
Get your dad's words out of your mind and destroy the next one!
Come on let’s not be last resort TC let’s be dad brown TC
So you're dad's BS theory is true?
Come on men why do you have to bring that up
@@remedan.because he just ran 16 seconds off his PR
what's the theory?

Maybe you should run a time trial or two to boost your confidence.
Your slowest time would be my 2nd best 15 ever lol
No one cares. This is not about you.
I know you're running slower than you'd like and ya maybe you can improve on training and a lot of things but running 4:10 mile pace is still pretty incredible. Keep it up and keep going

Try to incorporate ATG style gym training. Stronger tendons will increase your running efficiency and give u the power that you are lacking rn
