Hey everyone, sorry for the very amateur production job on this video - I shot this rundown of how it works unscripted and unrehearsed on the same day that I shot the video of it working but was never happy with it so I never uploaded it... However the original video has ended up being way more popular than I expected and people keep asking me about how it works so I thought I'd share this video for the Lego fans that want a bit of a closer look and an explanation. (You’ll just have to try and look past the lack of professionalism here...) The goal of this project was just to play a song (any full proper song) with Lego. Not to replace human guitarists or break any guitar playing records. As you can see, no, it can't play Master of puppets / Through the fire and the flames etc... I know it's noisy and I could have used an amp and/or a better microphone, maybe bought another M motor and geared it down instead of gearing a noisy L motor up etc etc, but it's too late for that now! Maybe the next Lego guitar robot will be able to play electric :P... If enough people are interested I'll do a video and (attempt to) explain the programming side of things too. Thanks guys!

Fascinating stuff! Very creative/impressive... I will add though, being an avid guitar player, the tone and tune of this "Cheap" guitar you bought, really does not do your invention justice... :( (I mean to be honest, it's sort of a shite guitar... ) But, I understand that you are not going to spend $1,800 U.S. on a beautiful Taylor guitar, or something of the like to showcase your invention... ALTHOUGH! IF you had a better guitar, said guitar was tuned a bit better, plus having a mic or something similar to extract the sound from the acoustic... (the Lego machine seems to get quite LOUD once it gets going, drowning out the chords/melody...) I think it would sound EXCEPTIONALLY better and the "song" would come off more as a song, then just some chord being strummed... But, again... I know it was just for fun and a project... (And a MASSIVE one at that. I don't know anyone who could do this, let alone even think of doing it! ) Again, brilliant all the way around on building this! Just know that the "strength" of demonstration, as well as being able to showcase what you have built to maximum capability would be greatly increased with a better instrument and some increased volume, etc... (I'm still literally blown away that you built this! Massive props! ) Cheers! :)
dude, ive seen a lot of shit in this video sharing platform, however i have to admit, your work is a masterpiece, you should do a video explaining how to build these robots, like each time you do a "cover" like the guitar and the piano one, do a diy video or smt, this video, what you made caught me by its creativity, dificulty and its related to music ofc. good luck on your channel and stay cool man
Thanks Ruben, I'm glad you liked it. I didn't actually make a 'how it works' video for the piano one. After I decided I wasn't happy with my first 'how it works' video, (this one) I didn't bother with the piano one. Now I wonder if I should have. Unfortunately there probably won't be any more covers in the near future - I WAS working on a more capable (bass) guitar robot but had to abandon the whole project after about 9 months of building when I worked out that the Lego motors wouldn't be fast or strong enough. I'm working on another mechanical project this time which I think will take me a long time, so unfortunately, no more musical Lego for a long while...
hey man i really think you should brand your channel with a name and channel art. You could do this full time and make serious money eventually. You have a gift and a very inventive mind. These things are wicked cool. just my humble opinion though. You may not want that at all. If you need help with anything like graphic design let me know.
Hey Jeremy, thanks for the offer and the kind words - I really have to get around to picking a name or logo or something. Since the popular videos that I've made have copyrighted material, I can't really make much money off this unfortunately. So far it has come nowhere near covering the cost of the Lego so I'm not going to quit my day job just yet :P
Lego Music would work but I want to make non music related stuff too. ha yeah patreon might not go down so well - you are supposed to provide something monthly for your backers aren't you? I've just had to ditch the last project 9 months into the build and start on a new idea so it might be over a year between videos... I would not be giving the people much for their money :P

Hi Leo, sorry for the delayed reply, I haven't done any sort of study related to this. I am an electrician for my normal job. I think most jobs in robotics / design would require you to be able to code, and know how to use 3D modelling software (like CAD etc), but I am not exactly sure, since I don't actually do anything like this for a job...

I do not understand the mechanism of the chords how it works to do it with the motor in the gears so that they agree I do not understand the assembly of how the gears should be placed to be the correct chords and that they do not collide with each other, the change system is made . And if other songs can be created without changing the structure of the gears. And how does the software to change songs or create a song work?

Hey Stradequit, thanks for the interest. I am actually an electrician (not working on robotics or anything though) so kinda nothing to do with this sort of stuff... The next build I would say MAYBE this year due to the fact that I lack free time and have lots of things I want to do and aim pretty high with my ideas. I think I will also have to learn how to use leJOS (from scratch) for the next one which adds another hurdle. Plus it needs 3x ev3's so money is another issue... But if you subscribe, you'll be the first to know when the next one is done ;P

This is amazing. I hope to be able to buy a guitar sometime. The one I'm after is going to be different, and I don't plan on using a traditional pick. However I also don't see myself settling on having just one guitar.

very cool! I did notice that the rhythm was a bit off, I think the shifting part, that makes the pick not play the E string for the Am and C chords, is causeing the rhythm to shift whith it so the chords aren't on the beat very well. I think you could fix this by programming the fretting robot so that is touches the E string but not presses down on it when you don't need it, so the E string would be strummed but you wouldn't hear the note, just a slight click. not sure how hard this would be, (I'm a bass /guitar player and know nothing about these mechanics)

Hi Lynxon, unfortunately there are no building instructions for this. I don't know if you can understand the video, but to fit any other guitar or play any other song, you would need to make and program it differently. I also pulled this apart the day I filmed it which was about 3 years ago. If you look at the photos in the pinned comment, that's about all I can offer, sorry!
What kind of a person are you disliking this!!!??? I have great respect for someone who is able to make this! It's a very ingenious piece of hardware and the timing of all the gears, arms and control unit must have been the hardest part I quess. Next step: make a Lego Guitar Robot which does a fingerpicking piece with different chord positions on the neck! :-) That would be impossible. Anway, really enjoyed watching your video.
Great little machine :) But i think the sound quality would improve massively when you hook up the guitar to an amp somehow. I don't think this guitar has that option?
Yeah this is just a cheapo guitar I bought for this project. The magnetic field of the servos would interfere with the pickups on the guitar even if it was acoustic electric. I looked for an optical pickup that I could just stick on there but I couldn't find such a product. It sounds a lot more like a guitar in real life - my crappy phone mic picked up that frequency a lot and if you play it back on a phone it sounds even worse again. This was only ever intended to be a fun Lego project though, not a human replacing guitar revolution.
May I ask what the name for the "gear" on top of the motor controlling the movement of the frame is called? I can't seem to find it, and I'm trying to build one of these robots too.
Hey there, the part on top is called a large steering pulley - part no. 3736. But it doesn't really do anything except for allow me to easily turn the motor by hand. You could use any part you like. Underneath is what is holding the frame. I believe it was just a technic pin with either a bushing, a 1L pin connector or an 8t gear or something that fits snugly between 2 lift arms. Would love to see your robot when it's finished!
Hey there. It can only play the one song (or something else that uses the same 4 chords) as the chords are built into the hardware side of things not the software. I don't know if you've used the Lego EV3 kit before but all you can do is program motors to turn when, how fast and how much. So the mechanism I have used here will press on the next of the 4 preset chords for every quarter turn. The program just says wait, rotate, wait, rotate, wait, rotate etc.
Could you make a tutorial and a list of pieces? My little brother love legos and i just so happen to have a couple guitars, so we wanted to play with it a bit
Hey there, all I can offer is this video and the photos in the top comment. You would have to redesign the parts to suit your guitar/ your own song anyway so unfortunately I can't help you any further than this!
