I have used the same recipe with ash and water for many years but with the difference that I boil the lye for half an hour, and put the fungus in and cook it for half an hour. Then I dry it and beat it with a hammer. It has worked for me and it cathe spark almost every time. Kenneth

Nice job! If you care too, next time mix a 50/50 ratio of ash to water, soak the amadou in it for 1 hour. Then bring to a boil for at least an hour. A little more wouldn’t hurt either, like 1:15. Drain and pound the amadou. A little tip is to cover it with a few pieces of paper towel to catch the splashes of amadou juice! Lol! Let dry and little pound again, that will soften it and loosen up the fibers. Works for me every time! Amadou is an amazing resource!

It why on one of his videos of amadou didn't work at that filming. Seen to many with it prepared or raw off the fungi work. Multiples vids show methods if same exact preparation working. I blame old Murphy's law on that round. Life in the bush is hard either way. Fire is the most important skill one can learn. Good luck stay safe,prepared.

Congratulations on your success after all your hard work and research. Perhaps if you boil the amadou with the birch ash and water this will help with the amadou absorbing the chemicals but it will also help to break down the amadou fiber.
Yes Moray … I understand what you mean … but my goal was to make a liquid that only have to boil once. And the big difference between the failure and success … is how fresh ( not dried) Amadou pieces Thanks for your response 👍🏻
I realize your desire to keep the entire process as simple and timely as possible. If you take your fresh Amadou and add it to the ash and water when you boil it you will simultaneously extract the chemical and infuse it into the Amadou plus at the same time the boiling will help to break down the fiber in the Amadou all this in one procedure. Soaking in boiling water the chemical will penetrate better than soaking in cool water, this way you boil and soak at the same time in one combined process. You could also add some potassium nitrate to the ash water. You can find this at the fertilizer store, early gunpowder making goes back a very long way all very old school.
Hi Tom I didn’t realise getting good Amadou was so involved! But I still recon it will take a spark better if you rough the surface like you do to birch bark, I understand that the adding of the ley is a bit like a fire starter!! The recipe I've seen requires you top dry it out first. What I've heard is it matters if you cut across or along the grain. You must cut across in order for air to pass through the pores or something like that.
I don’t know that about the cross cut 🤔 but my experience is that you mustn’t dry it … at all 🧐 I found that if you dry it … it will NOT absorb liquid. Fresh Amadou in the solution … and it’ll stay soft👍🏻
I haven't tried any of it - it was just something I read - but it kind of makes sense that a cut tube surface might take easier to a spark than a closed tube surface, even if the air flow thing is a bit speculative. If you think of a bundle of rush or grass or even a tight bundle of twigs - it would probably catch fire quicker from the end of the bundle than from the sides. Anyway - certainly what you found out in terms of the texture of the final product makes sense as well. I just thought of it as a possible alternative explanation or contributing factor.
Yes I agree 👍🏻😁 leanings is a ongoing process. … just a little extra info: before I use the Amadou ( throwing a spark into it ) I fluff up the edge with a little saw ( in my Victorinox multitool ) that’s a very good thing to do 👌🏻🔥
this is also called potash or potassium ash. You can always buy potassium nitrate as stump remover and soak your amadou in a solution of potassium nitrate.
i tryed this years ago, and failed, just like you did in the first part of the video..i realy have to go out and try this again with fresh amadou now!!

It must be from hardwood … but birch wood is the best. And it must be the fine ash dust … or else it will flow in the water and not sink to the bottom. Atb to you 👍🏻🤗

Hello Tom looove your videos and specialy this one.. dont be angry at me if i correkt you.. kno3 -(potassium nitrate) is a strong oxidiser and the fungus will burn much more violent .. ash lye contains potassium oxide potassium carbonate and p.Hydroxides ... thei inhibit burning as well but not as much as kno3..... But you can make ash lye and filter off the liquid .. you hawe now the named potassium salts in solution.. now add a little bit of amoniumnitrate plant fertilizer to the solution.. now the solution start to smell a little bit of ammonia.. cause decomposition of the ammoniumnitrate and the no3 group konnekts to the potassium salts to form potassium nitrate.. lett soak for 1 to 2 days or cook for 30 min in this solution and you will see its big difference .. sometimes burn like rocketfuel hahaha.... method made my self and it works quite good... if u want i make tutorial video.. greethings from the norditalian alps.. and sorry for bad inglish
Interesting video, I myself find Amadou isn't all its cracked up to be at catching a spark, sometimes it catches relatively quickly, other times it can take forever to catch a spark , no good if you're desperate to make a fire , personally I think there's better materials more reliable than Amadou.
@@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag I've heard Amadou works better after soaking overnight in 25 mil of warm water and two spoonfuls of potassium nitrate , going to try this myself to see if it helps rather then hammering away forever before giving up .
Because it’s boiled in wood ashes it gets some chemical that makes it more easy to catch a spark ⚡️🔥👍🏻 I explain it in the video and you may have to watch it a couple of times to understand the concept 😉🔥👍🏻 Tom

I really don’t know 🤔 But there is a big difference between the to ways. When the Amadou is dry ( before it’s put in the ash lye) the structure is very loose and wood-like. And this structure doesn’t change when it has soaked in the lye for several days.
Most likely oxidized phenoles that are hard to dissolve are culprits, phenoles and some oils are what you remove with the lye. more or less making primitive paper.

I find it very tedious to remove the outer shell of the fungus and doing so also wastes amadou. I think I will try leaving the outer shell on and seeing if it works. Have you ever done this? It should still take a spark on the exposed face but maybe it will not work as well in the birds nest/tinder bundle to start a fire. I'll probably have to soak and boil it for longer to account for the fact that one side of the amadou is not exposed to the lye.

I have had the best luck with soaking in potassium nitrate and drying, no rinsing. This is a more modern (matchlock days)

There is no “use before” date on it. You can use it when you want. And it’ll keep its ability for a long long time 👍🏻😁

Hello Tom looove your videos and specialy this one.. dont be angry at me if i correkt you.. kno3 -(potassium nitrate) is a strong oxidiser and the fungus will burn much more violent .. ash lye contains potassium oxide potassium carbonate and p.Hydroxides ... thei inhibit burning as well but not as much as kno3.....
But you can make ash lye and filter off the liquid .. you hawe now the named potassium salts in solution.. now add a little bit of amoniumnitrate plant fertilizer to the solution.. now the solution start to smell a little bit of ammonia.. cause decomposition of the ammoniumnitrate and the no3 group konnekts to the potassium salts to form potassium nitrate.. lett soak for 1 to 2 days or cook for 30 min in this solution and you will see its big difference .. sometimes burn like rocketfuel hahaha.... method made my self and it works quite good... if u want i make tutorial video.. greethings from the norditalian alps.. and sorry for bad inglish

Will the ash lye work on other materials other that horse shoe fungus?
I guess so 🤔 never tried it but it’s not going to ignite any plants … have to be something that can take a spark ⚡️🔥 and ignite 🏕🌲

Interesting video, I myself find Amadou isn't all its cracked up to be at catching a spark, sometimes it catches relatively quickly, other times it can take forever to catch a spark , no good if you're desperate to make a fire , personally I think there's better materials more reliable than Amadou.
Yeah it can be difficult for time to time 😉🔥👍🏻 but I always succeed. I want to use something I can find in nature and not have to char first. 🏕

@@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag I've heard Amadou works better after soaking overnight in 25 mil of warm water and two spoonfuls of potassium nitrate , going to try this myself to see if it helps rather then hammering away forever before giving up .

What was the difference? How did you make it the right way?
Because it’s boiled in wood ashes it gets some chemical that makes it more easy to catch a spark ⚡️🔥👍🏻

Curious, do you think that because the amado was fresh the pores were able to soak up the liquid?
I really don’t know 🤔 But there is a big difference between the to ways. When the Amadou is dry ( before it’s put in the ash lye) the structure is very loose and wood-like. And this structure doesn’t change when it has soaked in the lye for several days.
Most likely oxidized phenoles that are hard to dissolve are culprits, phenoles and some oils are what you remove with the lye. more or less making primitive paper.

@@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag @Cimbrer Bushcraft - Viking Heritage Yes the boilling is annoying. To be honest the whole process of making amadou is annoying! I find it very tedious to remove the outer shell of the fungus and doing so also wastes amadou. I think I will try leaving the outer shell on and seeing if it works. Have you ever done this? It should still take a spark on the exposed face but maybe it will not work as well in the birds nest/tinder bundle to start a fire. I'll probably have to soak and boil it for longer to account for the fact that one side of the amadou is not exposed to the lye.
