This vid deserves more views. First time I realized how to make nice smooth amadou and not the crumbly flaky mess that has been the result of my attempts. Thansk Sir.

very interesting, I never knew amadou could be used as a tinder without being nitrated. Thank you for showing me this.

Love the video brother, thank you for the lessons. Skilled hands doing great work and showing mastery.
How interesting how many ways mushrooms teach us. Worldwide as well. It doesn't matter where you are, mushrooms are there to be the communicators of timeless wisdom in an endless amount of mediums.

Thanks mate. Mushrooms are fascinating aren't they. They become a bigger part of my life as each year goes by. They can produce so many resources, are healing the planet & feeding us etc etc. I am really looking forward to the general public realising how useful & interesting they are in the years to come.

I think they may have used the amadou to protect their hands in ancient times while flintknapping
and some day it caught a spark and they learned they could use it

This is a really inspiring video. I’ve been struggling with Amadou for a while. It would be great if you could go into a little more detail on how to find the right specimen. If I’ve understood correctly, the top should give to pressure? Size should be smaller than hand? The only bit you’re interested in is the very top layer (newest growth, furthest away from spore tubes), the rest can be discarded.
Have I got that right? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much. Amadou is tricky & there is a lot of misinformation around about it. I really should do a video on how to do the whole process. I thought the ASMR was a fun idea for this particular video - except for my sniffing (it was cold). It is difficult to find a soft large specimen & if you do it is usually worm eaten so the smaller ones are a better bet at sea level (you can find bigger less worm eaten ones above 1000m). You can feel the skin is thin & the trama layer will be soft enough to push in with a strong press from your thumb. In this video I used the layer just above the spore tubes which is the youngest layer but you can sometimes use the upper layers but these are more likely to be harder & more difficult to stretch out. When rhey are younger the spore tubes are shorter & easier to remove as well. Once you find a seem to open up you can very often seperate the layers then once you've cleaned them up with a knife you can stretch away or beat it out with a mallet or smooth stone. Hope that helps 👍 thanks for watching.

@@GreenerGlens great, that’s given me some good info, so I’ve been going for the wrong bit up to now, good to know. The ASMR works really well I think. It’s a very cool video that has opened my eyes to a better way to go with Amadou.

i failed two times at preparing amadou because i harvested it from hard mushrooms.
thanks to you i know what to look for now.

Good stuff! I've been working on making a batch from a large specimen but watching this I've realised it's not worth persevering with the tough older growth parts 😅

I know the feeling - I've been through it all. After years of research & experimenting this is by far the most efficient way I found. Finding the right conk that's the real skill of the whole process.

throw it into water - this will soften the mushroom and it'll be workable.

Back in the day barbers may not have realized that they sterilized their straight razors when they finish stropped their edges on amadou.

    • @GreenerGlens

An interesting thought Kirk. Who knows how many practices continued for 100s of years because they worked without those who used them knowing why they worked. It's one of the reasons we keep going back to old technology as we realise there was more to it that met the eye.

I thought you were going to show me how to dry my flies FFS.

    • @GreenerGlens
      @GreenerGlens  2 года назад

After this process just let the amadou dry fully, fold it in half & put your fly in between the layers & squeeze very gently. Drying flies is a modern use of amadou, it had much more interesting uses in the past (speaking as a fly tyer & fisherman myself).
