well, in the UK there a bunch of old steam locos that were ''saved from scrap'' but have just been left out in the open for half a century and they pretty much are only good for a few parts, and nothing else other than rust.
I agree. At what point can you still say you rebuilt that specific car? If literally every part but the engine and trans gets replaced, did you still "rebuild" that Hellcat? Or did you just swap an engine and trans into another car? That Hellcat is way too far gone but I'm still watching and that's probably the whole point.
I think the look of untreated metal, dented and crumpled to boot looks cool when done right. Often "rat rods" go with such a look. that said those are frame cars, and the body just a "skin". imo it would be criminally negligent to put that burnt out unibody car on the road.
I've seen rusted out mustangs get stripped down to the floor and rebuilt, I don't doubt he can do the same. I see hope in that car because the front of the car is intact, which holds a lot of vin numbers and the frame seems like it wasn't compromised. He's definitely gonna need a donor car. Btw, thanks for all your videos I'm a big Mercedes fan. I have a c32 AMG and w202 C230 that's probably gonna get an engine swap soon.
This is a philosophical idea. It’s just like the wooden ship idea. If all the wood on the ship was replaced due to weather damage is it the same ship? Or even us as human, we completely replaced every cell in our body every 7 years according to scientific studies. So are we still the same people we were at birth? Our government would say so.. we have that same mind or soul as you will.
No? You can't repair HSS metal structure after fire just by straightening and painting it. I just hope that he doesn't kill anyone when he takes that wreck back on the road. No matter what he does to it it won't be road safe vehicle anymore. Especially with the hellcat engine. The burnt car is not re-buildable. The fire would have annealed the metal structure with heat and made it soft, this will weaken the upper frame at the least.

@@Samcrac of all the people I would expect you to know that usually in a FEC(Front End Collision)(Not sure about Hellcat, but) both airbags deploy unless there was no passenger or it was manually turned off. Being it a sports car I would expect the passenger air bag to go off even if the seat pressure sensor is not picking up any weight. In the case where this vehicle drives at a high rate of speed and to avoid collision, driver slams on the brakes which causes a passenger to ease off the seat and rendering a zero read on the seat sensor. But that's just my point of view.
This is basically Socrates' axe. Say you have a axe, the handle breaks so you replace it. Then the blade breaks, so you replace it too. Now, is it the same axe?
I don't know about Finland, but vin swapping here is a felony if you get caught. It will always be a salvage title unless somebody commits a felony to do just what you were suggesting they'd have to. However, that engine alone with new valve covers, sensors and coils plus one hell of a cleaning is easily worth quadruple what he has invested in the whole car.
I once bought a neglected E46 BMW 325 sedan with a blown engine, failing tranny, and banged up body. NOT SALVAGED! Paid very little for it. I then swapped in E46 S54 engine, transmission, and the rest of the drivetrain, cluster swap, swapped different seats because the ones it came with were damaged, gave it a new cf trunk, new cf hood, new custom retrofit headlights and foglights, LED "eagle eye" tails, new tire/wheel package, refreshed the entire suspension, MTech2 front/rear bumpers and side skirts, new grill, new steering wheel, new shift knob and boot, upgraded the headunit and speakers, replaced front and rear windshield, wipers, replaced ECU, and even changed the badging. The car was essentially completely different than the original 325 it was born as, with the biggest difference being the M3 drivetrain. However, it still had the same VIN, and it was still registered and insured as a 325, lmao. I always thought that was funny.
@@FJB8646 what the hell are you talking about? A donor car? He grafted in a rear clip which was unusable on the burnt car and saved the front of the burnt! Stop hating!
To be honest, you can rebuild a car from pretty bad shapes, but fire damage over the whole car is a blatent no-go for normal people. The only reason I can see to buy this wreck is to swap the VIN numbers etc. to register a stolen car as a rebuild.
Think you gave D.I.Y. some new fans. And here we are 6 months later and Jose just powered up the hellcat. Engine is on its way! So now where's the update on D.I.Y. gangs hellcat?

Pete Morin that’s great that he’s found a way to get viewers. But the reality is the car is very damaged. Once metal is heated to a certain point it looses the properties that were engineered into it. Like the frame for instance it’s probably a hardened steel that can handle a lot of stress. What if he does fix the car cosmetically and one day he hits a pothole and the car breaks in half and then slides into a group of children waiting for the school bus 🚌.
MyTruckinLife ACE if you watched the vids, you would see that the fire did not get low down on the car. The carpet was still ok, and there was even paint still in some Places. It was a house fire where the fire burned from the top (roof) mostly. So structurally it’s fine, all the sheet metal is shot and I’m guessing will be replaced.
SCcarguy but in a unibody car the roof is part of the structure. Yes I was being dramatically silly but it’s just not something I would ever want to drive or even ride in. And with the amount of parts needed to make this car whole well unless you know a good chop shop it’s going to cost used hellcat money to rebuild.
Pete Morin He hasn’t prove any of that yet. He going to have to get a lot more views than what he is now. And than be able to pull it off and look good. So he got a long ways to go before we know if it pays off for him or not. I think he nuts that thing is junk. We will see.
pedro prieto also the engine was built to like 900 hp or something like that ill stand corrected on the numbers but the engine was built before the fire so its not stock
He made it clear in the first episode, he didnt rebuild this for resell value, to save money, but to exercise his skill. "Budget" and "money" isn't a factor. This rebuild takes everything hes got to do. He pushed himself further than any other channel with this build and is building a trophy to show what he got.
I believe in Jose's case, in his eyes it's not about saving money or bringing back an old classic. It's about the challenge. He is a skilled Craftsman & as a skilled Craftsman he feels the need to push his abilities to the limit, because that's what skilled Craftsman do. The man's got balls, that's for damn sure.
Really. He is doing this for the youtube money. Money its all about money. He did not rebuild the burnt out car. He took parts off the burnt car and fixed the green car and has so many people brain washed that he is rebuilding the burnt car. He even changed the firewall so he could change titles but that wont work in the end. The state will just issue him a new title. That car is worthless and feel sorry for the sucker that buys it.
@@Hotrodder-Garage From what I've seen so far, because I started watching the build, what he did was use the shell and electrical components from the green car (Hulk) and the undercarriage, frame, and engine from the burnt car. Then he's installing a manual transmission from another car. To be honest though, being a body man myself, he did everything right. What Jose did is exactly how the factory does on the assembly line, just he did it by hand. No matter what, there was no way he would have been able to restore the burnt car (Phoenix) without a donor car and he did an amazing job.
@@ahuertas69 HE only used the front of the frame and the floor. There is no frame. This is a unibody. So the rest of the car is the middle and rear of the unibody. Rockers are also body support. @@fatjeezus1953 I think Samcrac point was, is it worth it to most people and would he recommend others to do the same? The answer is a solid NO. It will cost way to rebuilt then it worth. or even new and then he use a different frame then the burned frame. Plus if anyone else did the same it would be copying and you be a shadow compare to him as been done already. To diygang since he was the first, it was well worth it and at the end of the day that all that matters. It did get him known and now he has good branding he can live off of and make other deals. So end of day he will profit from it, he not as stupid as some think, he pretty clever and pretty much that car started his career, as otherwise he likely won't have been as well known and took many years otherwise, so it was worth the investment. Better then new. A pieced together salvage car with 5 different shades of purple. What makes the motor worth 65K. Its a rebuilt hellcat shortblock with new pistons and rods. Same cam, same heads, same injectors, same stock supercharger as any other hellcat. RUclips people are delusional. Most people would not touch a car like that. Front frame has been heated in a fire so will always be a worry if it ever gets in a accident. But its better then new WOW.

Jose is doing a wonderful job. You aughta see that hellcat now. Don’t know why people talk down. There’s been a lot of amazing things done in history. Do not doubt anyone.
Sam, RUclips car repair and rebuild projects, as well as most car-focused programming, has a lot more theater involved than one might think. I'm not going to watch someone change plugs on a car to be entertained; however, if the mechanic is demonstrating a workaround that avoids pulling the whole engine and flirts with some risk in doing so, that is theater and it's more entertaining. Rebuilding a salvaged car watching the mechanics discover unanticipated damage and working through it without losing their focus or their butts financially is theater. In my family, we have over 70 years across three generations of garage and body shop experience in shops we have always owned. Every repair and rebuild following an accident has its own unique challenges -- no two are the same. Or, as they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure. One rebuilder may see an aspect of a repair they know they're going to hate and another may see the damage in a different way and have an epiphany to make it simple. Like several others here, I subscribed to DIY Gang after you editorialized a bit too much rather than stick to the facts. I have no problem with your scale, but I do wish you could praise in public and criticize in private just a little bit more. Ignoring my own advice here: It seems to me you have a yard full of unfinished projects and, judging from the grass growing around them, you might just be as much of a procrastinator as I am. You could have looked back at DIY Gang's record of cars successfully repaired and recognized that maybe they saw an angle you missed, not the least of which was the theater. The entire rebuild was not about maximizing profit for DIY Gang, rather it was successfully completing a challenge most would not have taken.
I'm sure they'll do it. But the viewer has to understand that he's doing it for RUclips money. Average guys have dreams of saving big money by rebuilding expensive salvage cars, but many don't understand that these builds are only worthwhile because they're subsidized by advertising revenue.
aaron this is called life and the point of it is to make money he’s doing it for money the views are going to bring him and when he’s done with this car it’s going to make him money
@@mrhawkins2672 even if he could fix it 100% its still a rip off for 5k. He should have bought for a LOT less. He's putting a lot more time and material into the car than what it's worth. But I guess it's messed up enough that he can milk it for content and that RUclips money so I guess it isn't a total waste.
Phil Thayer I’ve been watching the diy build since day one and it’s not 100% the original no but it’s not 95% a different car.. if that was the case I don’t think diygang would have been putting in all that work but who are we to judge how other people spend their time I mean we’re replying to each other on her when we can be doing this stuff ourselves..
There are so many people thinking this project was a waste of time for a variety of reasons, but there was CLEARLY other motives in the background for doing this project. On his channel, he has done 30+ videos so far on the progress of the Hellcat rebuild which has now generated a continued increase in subscribers, views and MONEY. It is a challenge for him which he obviously wants to do, and given the huge amount of work will only continue to generate more curiosity and viewers. This will only result in more revenue, and additional partnerships for free products and services in exchange for a small advertisement. He can then sell the car at the end of it, and since the car was a documented build, you can bank on the fact that one of his viewers will immediately jump at the offer to buy it just for novelty value. So in the end he now has a video set which will continue to generate money, his reputation, and a fat paycheck for his time on the build which then allows him to continue to grow his channel. It's a total win win situation for him. This is why some people make a lot of money and others do not because they can't see the bigger picture without their head being firmly shoved up their ass.
If you guys watched the vids you would know the fire burned on the upper part of the car, the lower part was ok. Even the carpet was not melted, and there was paint left. The sheet metal is shot and will be replaced but the floor and frame rails should be fine.
tracycolorado just because it has compression during a quick test doesn’t mean the engine is good the heat of a car fire is plenty hot enough to remove the temper of many of the parts inside the engine and weaken them go ahead and try to put it under load to 7000 rpm it will likely make for a great explosion video
@@awahady6864 I guess you know NOTHING about rebuilding cars do you? My brother was a body man all his life. It was nothing to remove part of a car to replace if there was too much damage. A lot of people who watch these videos seem to forget that, the target of these aren't to flip the car for a profit. These are simply investments into a RUclips channel where they make their money back through RUclips, not the sale of the finished car. I agree. At what point can you still say you rebuilt that specific car? If literally every part but the engine and trans gets replaced, did you still "rebuild" that Hellcat? Or did you just swap an engine and trans into another car? That Hellcat is way too far gone but I'm still watching and that's probably the whole point.
Instead of "ship of Theseus" it's now the hellcat of Theseus :p
I think the look of untreated metal, dented and crumpled to boot looks cool when done right. Often "rat rods" go with such a look.
that said those are frame cars, and the body just a "skin". imo it would be criminally negligent to put that burnt out unibody car on the road.
He's doing it because he knows it'll make a name for him on RUclips
I bet you all feel stupid now, mans almost finished rebuilding it. Lol

No matter what he does to it it won't be road safe vehicle anymore. Especially with the hellcat engine.

The burnt car is not re-buildable. The fire would have annealed the metal structure with heat and made it soft, this will weaken the upper frame at the least.
Wouldnt it make it hard? The high heat and fast cool would make it brittle and hard I thought
Anything can be "rebuilt" the question is if it is done correctly is it worth it to rebuild a car that wasn't worth the asking price when it was new.

To be honest, you can rebuild a car from pretty bad shapes, but fire damage over the whole car is a blatent no-go for normal people. The only reason I can see to buy this wreck is to swap the VIN numbers etc. to register a stolen car as a rebuild.

The carpet was still ok, and there was even paint still in some
Places. It was a house fire where the fire burned from the top (roof) mostly. So structurally it’s fine, all the sheet metal is shot and I’m guessing will be replaced.
SCcarguy dude its torched
SCcarguy but in a unibody car the roof is part of the structure. Yes I was being dramatically silly but it’s just not something I would ever want to drive or even ride in. And with the amount of parts needed to make this car whole well unless you know a good chop shop it’s going to cost used hellcat money to rebuild.
Pete Morin He hasn’t prove any of that yet. He going to have to get a lot more views than what he is now. And than be able to pull it off and look good. So he got a long ways to go before we know if it pays off for him or not.
I think he nuts that thing is junk. We will see.

@@Hotrodder-Garage From what I've seen so far, because I started watching the build, what he did was use the shell and electrical components from the green car (Hulk) and the undercarriage, frame, and engine from the burnt car.

The amount of fire damage that car has would’ve weaken the metal components of the engine that car is good for nothing but a crusher
it has great Cylinder Compression test . little do U know
If you guys watched the vids you would know the fire burned on the upper part of the car, the lower part was ok.
@@sccarguy8242 they'll be unibody the strength will be the hole of the body forms part of the vechles strength

Jose is doing a great job
And I gave them all a 10
Yes same here too
Got news for You. DIY finished his car! Looks great too. Jose is my new hero. The guy can rebuild anything and proved it with the Hell Cat.
RC Hobbyist Extreme its not the same car . I guess there is no cure for stupidity.
@@awahady6864 I guess you know NOTHING about rebuilding cars do you? My brother was a body man all his life. It was nothing to remove part of a car to replace if there was too much damage. The vehicle STILL retains its original title if it has been grafted, therefore it is considered a repaired but COMPLETE car.
José DIY it's just doing it to show what's his capable of doing , wants to earn recognition/respect , not flip it.
He's the only real mechanic doing these Hellcat rebuilds. Anyone can buy a Hellcat with front and rear end damage and fix it with parts and Bondo, but he took this car apart to the chassis and rebuilt it... That's real old school know how👍👍
Highly agree with you :)
Def!
100percent facts aget
it's a different car though. lol.
Sam what you meant to say was "i cant rebuild this car because i dont have the same skill & patience as jose from d.i.y gang"
It’s not always about the money but dedication to achieve something
Longboioaks please rebuild me a hellcat with dedication🤦🏽♂️
@@catfisher420 stop hating! Cause you know how to do rebuilds. The way he sectioned it off was factory seams. But you prolly don't know what that is!😂
I would just buy the cheapest v6 challenger from 2008 and swap in a hellcat motor, and spend the rest on exterior mods
Depends if the Engine is bigger than the actual space left under the hood...
If it can fit in that engine bay, then a scoop will fix the hood problem
The body and chassis is completely the same across the array of trim levels and engine options. Also, that space is called an engine bay. Fitting name, huh?
Its more than that, different suspension set up
@@MICKSHRED Interesting, wonder how the suspension changed throughout the years and different model trims
I think the DIY Gang is doing it to just do it. Everyone will learn something from what eventually won't be monetarily worth it, but we will all enjoy watching it and see how it turns out. Agreed on the 1 out of 10. I'm doing the same with a Charger motor swap from V6 to V8.
I believe he will get it done
It's to get his name out there - get attention with views, overnight RUclips popularity.
Hope all these fools in the comments are liking the nice "L" D.I.Y channel handed them. #upyours
I've been following DIY Gang and he is not joking. I don't think it can be done but the guy has balls!
Aaron F where do you draw the line between bravery and stupidity?
Dylan Wakley I think he just crossed it 😂
He's boricua like me we have serious balls .for crazy project we have world records in car related topics.
It's like a pizza burnt beyond oblivion you can eat it but it's still charcoal lmao
Let's see. I think it'll be insane to rebuild it. Time and money will be high with this one. Would rather have a higher mileage hellcat for a little more $$$
The end goal of the project is not the come out with a rebuilt Hellcat. The goal is to gain a shitload of subs super quickly.
I wonder if there will be an update video showing his progress, jose has inspire many to rebuild cars and take on projects like this one, i think he just proved you wrong like you asked, its time to acknowledge his talent 👍🏼
Thanks for telling me about D.I.Y Gang. I like their videos more then yours now
Samcrac you created these lil dudes
Dexter Sullen 'TRUTH' “im their daddy!” -sam😂
Moe Green someone’s salty. Damn
@Moe Green your 1 sub and zero content has determined that to be a lie
@Moe Green your saltiness has determined you to be a douchebag hack that couldn't fix a tire with low air
A lot of people who watch these videos seem to forget that, the target of these aren't to flip the car for a profit. These are simply investments into a RUclips channel where they make their money back through RUclips, not the sale of the finished car. I'm sure a lot of these guys building salvaged exotics, are taking out business loans for the initial purchase.
Exactly! Most of these people don’t understand that.. He will get more money off those videos then what he paid for the entire project.
All of a sudden, the unknown D.I.Y Gang is now World Famous.
You can't buy this much publicity for $5k.
MetaView7 Hahahaaha
I found a hood from a 1966 Impala, I should definetely rebuild this Impala
😂
Sam on crac
His work is amazing and he's almost done. A lot of skill ans a lot of fun, that's D.I.Y gang. you should admit that you were wrong dude 😂😂😂
freakdoctor he's just mad because he has no real skills in doing a full rebuild by himself! This FucKTArd pays people to do work on his cars!
HOLE PERPIS? HOLE PER PISS? How about whole purpose? What was your whole purpose writing hole perpis? Did you put a hole in a perpis?
You made me laugh this morning! Thanks!
Shane Dorsiy exactly what im think, this guy is all talk
it's not about whether he can rebuild it, it's about whether it's worth it to rebuild it. he even says in the video he's sure jose can rebuild it but that he doesn't think it'd be worth it though i'm sure he's talking strictly monetarily.
@@ZainKaneko I don't think that José does it to make money but rather for the challenge that it represents. It's a way like any other of creating interesting content and I'm always happy when I have a notification from D.I.Y gang, I know I'm going to have a good time. and that's all I expect from a channel to which I subscribe.
Dude, hes actually doing it tho and it looks fucking amazing so far
The only panel replaced was the VIN tag...
He switched the cars he doing the green 1 now
@@jacquel12376 No he didn't he is still using Phoenix. Like he said from the beginning he was going to use as much as he could to restore Phoenix... He is not stopping he is restoring the car.... whether he uses another as well at least he is finishing what he started. Great rebuild you should go check it out
@@bradleyhouse3180 shut up. Stop hating cause he did fix it!
@@thatdude6107 not hate. He used the firewall floor and drive train to repair a completely different car, with far less damage.
I’m going to rebuild an old washing machine into a pristine hellcat!
Send the link. I need to see this!
He prove you wrong dude the car is running strong
the car is like 90% new parts at this point it would have been easier to just rebuild his donor car given that all he used from the fire car was part of the frame floor and engine i say he didnt rebuild the burnt hellcat. and not to mention how the frame in that car is considerably weaker than original due to the fire without heat treating it, its quite dangerous to use
The person who sold him that hellcat is laughing right now
5k on top of insurance seller definitely got out of it is an outstanding move.
And DIY gained youtube traffic....win win.
@@skvltdmedia You only get what the car is worth at that time from insurance. They then auction it off for what they can get out of the loss as they are buying it from you. So the 5k typically would go to the insurance company if a claim was filed. So unless you crash it on the way home from the lot with gap insurance you still lose out. even then, you've lost what you put down on it.
All the way to the bank
Sleepy not really. It’s about 75% done.
Dam is there any clean title hellcats left
Plenty here in northern Indiana. Challenger owners drive like grandpas... until there's the occasional dickweed who's weaving around traffic. Times like that it's either stay back _a lot_ or go full throttle and get out of there. This is why some of us want the horsepower, to get away from people who have no business driving.
At the dealership lol
Definitely agreed with you in the beginning when considering the practicality of reasoning for rebuilding. But for the sake of basically doing the impossible (or impracticality), his achievements in this build is worth acknowledgement. Very interested in seeing an update to this video on the DIY Gang build when it's finished. Pretty considerable feat considering he's basically a regular Joe with limited resources.
That guy that is claiming to rebuild that burned car is totally NUTS. Even with a donor flood car there will be a lot of electronics that are going to be ruined in a flood.
I would rather buy $5000 in scrap steel than a $5000 burned out car because they both belong in the same place but the pile of scrap steel doesn't smell like cancer.
... MAYBE HE'LL GO FULL FLINTSTONES ...
Think about how much the metal annealed. So unsafe.
The "pretty work" aka the skin isn't much of a concern but all of that High Strength Steel that makes up the unibody has all likely lost it's temper.... Yeah a car like that you just don't rebuild...
@@GearHead4Lyfe Car like that in here would have it's VIN blacklisted and car itself marked as scrapped and nonrebuiltable. Once that's done there is no getting it back. I know because we got old Volvo 240 frame in pretty much mint condition, but with scrapped VIN. Only way to get it to the road is by transferring VIN from existing car, aka cutting and replacing parts that have VIN on them.
I think that guys DIY brain is annealed from too much weed.
a year later and it’s completely rebuilt and drives beautifully
Yes it can be rebuild!
Step 1: buy torched Hellcat
Step 2: steal another Hellcat
Step3: swap Vin and get titled.
ZGERMAN that’s what I figured!! Not the same!! DIYGang 👎🏻
@@TMR147 actually go watch! He didn't vin swap. For any REAL BODY GUY! He took a rear section and grafted 2 into 1! Thats not simple and def not a vin swap.
Basically he is using the VIN parts only and how much of the OEM car has to be original to be considered the same car
I need to do this to a truck and a car that I have
@@katynunnery2904 well if your using everything usable id say atleast 35% which from what ive seen in body motor, drivetrain etc hes def doing it.
707 HP needs genuine structural integrity and that thing doesn’t have enough for a lawn mower engine
Samcrac you should definitely do an update video to this cause DIY GANG has worked his ass off . He continues to prove everyone wrong on this build. Would be nice of you to shine light on the progress he’s made since this video you posted .
@samcrac
The way I see it DYI Gang (Jose) intentions are to provide a show, at more than 45 episodes he’s proving to be very clever. Even He knows it’s not worth it but, it will go down in RUclips history as the first one to tackle such a challenge. He will loose money on the rebuild but, will make way more from RUclips and sponsors.
$5,000 for that, wtf
The engine.
And transmission.. Maybe on both tho..
I would’ve to see them both working first.
DIY Gang did what you could never.
The fire damaged hellcat the fire was so hot it melted the rims so what did it do to the aluminum block just because the compression is ok doesn't mean that the engine is still good
Waste of 5 grand! That heat has compromised everything on and in that car!
The rims on the REAR of the car were melted, not the front where the motor resides.
splash you should see his videos motor is good and the car is looking great
@@sabs8897 exactly it's looking great his content is great just because he can't do it doesn't mean Jose can't #diygang
