- In this video, I'll demonstrate how to make a walking stick topper that is turned on the wood lathe. I used a hardwood called Ash and it turned out beautiful. I glued in a compass on top of the topper and attached the topper to hiking staff made out of poplar wood. I finished the topper with 3 coats of friction polish. This topper was a huge upgrade to my walking stick. Can't wait to get out in the woods.

You can buy the compass and forstner bit from Treeline USA. However, it looks like they discontinued the 25 mm compass and now offer a 27 mm compass (along with a 27 mm forstner bit)
Great work Stephen. I love the Laguna lathe! Thank you.👍✌
Thanks for watching! Yes, I've been pleased with the Laguna so far.
that looks great. Do you think holding on to the piece with the metal outlay would blister your hand on a long hike?
Good question! The metal outlay is mounted higher up than it may appear in the video. I also have a paracord wrap below it where it's fitted for my hand. I like to use poplar dowels from HD for the staff itself. They're very lightweight.
