In addition it prevents any accidental unzipping when swimming in a crowded race (someone snags the zipper and unzips your suit), and lastly provides the fastest exit when running to transition, simply grab the leash at the base and pull up, the zipper unzips more easily than pulling down and no more fishing for the leash. While it's more challenging to zip up yourself, it can be done with practice.

would be interesting to know why the zipper starting point is at the top and not from the bottom up?
