SP on any yamaha model stands for " sports production '" Keep up the good work on the channel , and hopefully, see you again at next year's ABR 👍
Ive been riding a 2021 MT 09 for the last 3 years. I zip around town with a smile on my face. It makes my heart rev when I open the throttle. It makes me feel alive. Only request is Id like additional color options as black feels boring sometimes, and turquoise doesn't match my appearance. Anyway, Thanks Yamaha keep it up ❤
Your channel is so good that even if I am not interested in the bike you ar reviewing, I watch it anyway. Nice and balanced and you say what needs to be said. You are the GOLD STANDARD for bike reviews !
I love that Yamaha has finally fitted nice brakes to it. My old R1M certainly didn't come with Brembo. I know looks are subjective but if it's a great bike you'd be silly to ignore it simply on looks.
I do agree, but a large part of Bike ownership is around enjoying the looks, at least it is for me, and although the Bike is not a stunner I could now at least live with the looks of it. But of course a totally subjective point.
@TheMissendenFlyer I tend to agree, I ride a Superduke and that thing is ugly but everytime I'm on it. I get the biggest giggles. After 3 SDR I still think it's ugly and I'm about to buy my forth. It certainly looks better than before and I get a feeling that their XSR version will look great.
But although it has stylemas it still doesn’t feel like the street triple or 890r brakes. Those have bigger discs and steel brake lines. Would have expected them to use steel brake lines on an sp model. But… it is a super nice bike to ride, the engine is lovely, I do like the punch of the Duke 890r but the CP3 comes really close and is a lot smoother at lower rpm’s. In means of looks, would have liked other color schemes, more a fan of the black normal mt09. But it looks a lot better in real life than on pictures or videos. I ride a street triple rs at the moment, it sure looks better imho, but still switching to an mt09 next year. Love the riding position, more plush suspension and the torque. KTM is my favorite but not happy with the reliability of the 790/890 platform, not sure if that’s fixed on the 990 dukes, and there’s no R version at the moment.
@@wernerxldata i thought that was a little weird too. I've also got a CF Moto 700CLX Sports. It also has Stylema,Brembo Radial MC and braided steel lines. @@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks Andy. As a 50 year old who began riding motorbikes at 6, then raced dirt bikes as a teenager who then progressed to road racing starting out in the Australian 250 cc production series all the way up to our Superbike series inclusive of WSB at my home track being Phillip Island in both 95 and 96 I actually find the position of the GP to actually be relaxed and the MT-09 still a little bit too upright for my liking. Especially as I’m above average in height at 6’2. I’ve heard several riders that are somewhat vertically challenged still find the GP a bit extreme however it all really comes down to what you’ve been conditioned to ride and muscle memory as I like to know what the front wheel is doing to provide a better level of confidence. Sitting upright simply doesn’t provide this on any bike to the same degree regardless of brand. I do also own an Africa Twin for any extended riding plans. @@HaggisPower I’m 6’3” and found the reach to the bars as perfectly placed and not upright like the MT-09. After 40 something years of riding with a Sportbike background it also has less weight on your hands and with the screen it still enables clean air to hit you from chest up which reduces the weight on the clip ons with cruise control activated. Great review, as always. Really enjoy your channel. You clearly enjoyed the performance of the cp3 motor. Looks are, I agree, a bit marmite. Which would you choose between the Mt09 sp or the Ducati monster sp…?
I wanted the 2024 MT-09 but was priced out by insurance. Ridiculous quotes. Ended up with the 2021 Tracer 9, on a 24 plate! Cheaper insurance, mostly the same bike ❤❤❤
Great review as always had the last SP a few years ago had a test ride on the standard 24 model and ordered the 24 SP straight away just makes you smile all the time 👍
Nicccce! You rarely hear a good "aplomb". Thee thing I look at in bikes now is the brakes. They're so, so important. If they offer a better brake option, I do it, damn the cost. If I was interested in getting into the mt-0x gang, I'd have the better-brakes one. The suspension I'm not good enough to notice, but the brakes? Every single ride I get on those harder than I ever push the forks and shock.
I've owned singles, twins, (two- and four-stroke), triples and fours, (inline and v-four), and I have to say, to my ears, the glorious sound of a triple is the best of the bunch, (and that's coming from a v-twin owner!)
Hi Andy I have owned both and the original what a bike unreal does everything and rapid as you like . Track day weapon the original before they sorted the feeling just tried to throw me off on corners kept you sharp. 😀
I've had 4 MT-09s (2 Standard, 2 SP) and think they're fantastic bikes. I've not ridden the 2024 version in either form but previous versions of the SP had firmer suspension than the Standard and would be my preference only if I went on Track days. If you don't do those, like me, the Standard is fine but the spanner in the works now is the Brembo brakes which I'm sure are fantastic and could be worth the extra alone.
I'm really leaning toward this being my 2nd bike in a couple of years. Just bought a new R1250RT this spring, and it's actually quite a good all-arounder. I may not be able to justify a second bike when I do a pros/cons list because the BMW is so good, but having owned an FJ-09 (Tracer) a few years ago, I know how good that CP3 platform is and I do miss it sometimes.
I keep thinking I'd like to get one of the Yamaha CP3 motors. Therefore, I'm glad to see your review. Have a nice week and please like always keep the shiny side up. 😎
That 360 camera was sticking out a fair way there, i'd have it within the width of my mirrors as a guide to how much room there is. Could make a right mess of someone's paintwork.
A great review, it seems it is worth spending the extra money to get the SP version. I am interested what you think of the footage from your new camera, it was great to see you on the bike as well the helmet view. Good to see Rod Stewart making a guest appearance.
i watch your reviews to get a honest reviews and size wise i am only 5 foot 5 tall so i am nearish you ,this is probbably the new bike im going to get ,,good on yer
I've ridden both the 2024 Street Triple RS and the 2023 version of the MT-09, and the MT-09 has noticeably more get-up-and-go. This is likely because of the sizable torque difference. It's possible that the Street would out perform it a little bit better at the upper end of the rev range but in any case, almost all riding includes low, mid, and upper mid range rpms. Therefore, in most situations, the MT-09 would be quicker and faster and would definitely be faster with a passenger or loaded up with more weight, like gear and tank and saddle bags.
I still like the Honda 1000r not so much electronics but corners fantastic. Although I have to say I wish more bikes had lovely coloured wheels like the Yamaha, that blue is gorgeous? Hope Carole is getting on good with her 650? 😊👍🏍️
I love that bike, but i remember when 900s were fast, Fireblade, ZX-9r etc...maybe you should do a video on why 90s 900s were ballistic, have we gone soft?
Bike looks great, love the keyless but I think I still prefer my street triple RS. My question is about the rear footrests, they look extremely close to the back of your boot, if there was a pillion do you think their foot would foul on yours?
Thanks for a good review as usual. I think it’s worth the extra money over standard. The SP will allow you to exploit the full fruits of the engine. Imagine the hassle if you have standard and then decided to upgrade the brakes & suspension to the same spec as SP? I haven’t calculated but guessing it’ll be more than £1700 to upgrade.
Bet that tash and wig brought you back to your youth 😉😂 (all in good fun). Still would be too tempted by the MT-10, but I’m a bit spoilt by too much bhp. ‘Bike of the year’ surprised me!
Really nice bike TMF, would love a ride on one of those. New 360 quality is good but wobbles a bit on the outrigger, maybe a setting may fix that? Anyway, another good vid 👍
Hey tmf. Great real world review as always. What’s your thoughts on the touring ability? I know it’s not a touring bike per se. Do you think you could throw a screen and luggage on it and head to the alps? Great work, ✌️
Thank you. My dad and I for years have toured on our Fireblade’s, and we are looking for more comfort. Neither of us are ADV fans (and have short legs lol) so dads looking at this MT09sp and I’m going for a 10sp - esp after watch Tim Rodie touring on one - a great watch. Thanks again
😅Nice bike love the blue wheels and Ohlins not so much the tiny petrol tank capacity but at that price for a middle weight naked not my bike of the year that would be the Triumph Speed 400 in Blue Another bike with Blue wheels and Ohlins the Aprilia Mille Edwards Rep You didn't mention your pet hate the rubber bands on the handle bars😂 I'm fitting Weiser Technik modules and a Denali D6 LED brake running light to my R1300GS to sort out the rear lights or lack of today Thanks for the review J
Funny how subjective bike looks are - I dislike pretty much everything about this bike personally - but there's no denying the CP3 is a great motor. Not a bike I thought you'd love, but great to see you out on it. IMO it can't hold a candle to the Striple RS, build quality is so much better on the Triumph.
Fair enough if you prefer the Street Triple (it is a fantastic bike), but I wouldn’t say the quality of the Triumph is any better than the Yamaha personally.
Both versions great bikes. I think I would stick to the standard one as the difference for me would not be worth it. However I would prefer the xsr 900 over both due mainly to aesthetics and colour options. New camera is very good but also slightly weird view. Something to get use to.
Hi Andy, if you had to choose between this or your z900rs which would you choose? . Only comment on the new camera was the angle showed a lot of views your posterior so would prefer if it was in a different position 😂
Fair point on the bum shots - will limit those in future. And I've grown to love my Z900RS since I put the new headers on it - I'd still take the RS over the SP......(also I LOVE the looks of the big Kwak, where as the MT09 is just OK).....
You're the first to mention it - I'm so glad you noticed! It's not gone forever if popular demand wants it back (I had quite a lot of people say they didn't like it).....
I don’t like the keyless ignition… I like the key option always! Especially when I read on Reddit the guy with speed triple his keyless didn’t work … he couldn’t start the bike up! He waited month until the fixed the keyless!
None too keen on the blue wheels, or the TFT, that aside it does seem to be a peach. Are you using the OA4 also on this video? As the quality of both forward and 360 are excellent.
Morning Andy I think good choice for bike of the year I love them 09’s best of the three so I’m told I haven’t ridden any of them but I’m thinking of buying one towards end of year as a winter bike but obviously not when it’s icy and especially when the salt goes down it be locked up in the garage with my rocket and it’s got to be the SP hasn’t it for £12000 that’s not bad really I don’t think anyway ride safe bye for now
Hmmm, £12k for the 24 MT09 SP. I got my Gen2 MT10 (non SP) for £12.5k and Yamaha were then throwing in £1k of accessories. Having ridden the XSR 900 I personally prefer the CP4 motor of the MT10. The MT10 rides and feels a little heavier but then it also doesn't feel as toy like to me. Besides, 10 is one more than 9 so it's got to be better. Try them both is all I can say.
Took this out for a ride last week and found everything about the SP "cramped" in terms of the riding position and the bars too narrow, compared to my 24 Triumph ST RS. But that engine is something else. It'll be a tough decision for some between the two.
Andy, can you use the quick-shifter at low speeds around town, what gears and what speed? I want to change my bike next year, and I've always wanted an Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory, but there are a lot of downsides to owning that bike. It's a beautiful bike, but the quick-shifter doesn't work below about 4500rpm, fuel economy is very bad, insurance and servicing are high, etc... But, then, Yamaha go and bring this bike out, and I just can't ignore it, and, let's face it, it does make a lot more sense for the road. 😁
@@TheMissendenFlyer Cheers Andy, it's just a pity you couldn't spend more time with the bike. It's fantastic that you can actually use the quickshifter in second gear around town, unlike Yamaha's previous models. I also like the fact that the bars and pegs are both two-position adjustable, so great for taller riders. It's definitely looking favourite to be my next motorcycle. There's always a distinct lack of information on quickshifters and cruise controls. It would be great to know what speeds they work at, and are there any downsides, such as, is the quickshifter clunky, or can you use the cruise control in a 20mph zone, for instance. Another one is the bike's MCIA secured rating, for insurance purposes. It looks like Yamaha have finally ironed out the problems with the MT-09, plus it's a decent price for all that kit, overall, what a great bike. 👍
So the closest competitor to the targeted performance envelope of the MT09 SP is Triumph’s 765RS, the knock on the Triumph units are the gear ratios are too low overall and more problematic the ratios are very close, and is more an optimization typically chosen to give a power delivery suitable for track use applications rather than what is ideal for use in conventional street riding temperament. Is Yamaha’s gearing choice as “busy” as that of the Triumph 765 machines?
Good review of what sounds a great bike but I never like the looks of most Yamaha's. Untidy engine, awkward lines and that exhaust would be ok if hidden under a car.
Interesting. I am really struggling with the looks of the SP. I went back to the standard MT-09 review and I found the looks of that bike acceptable. But for some reason this color scheme accentuates the notchy parts of the bike and I really dont like it. I thought maybe there were some differences in the cowl pieces, but in looking back at the standard, the pieces all look to be similar or the same. Funny how much difference a paint job can make.
If you look around you can find a 2023 new SP for £10K now. Any thoughts from your own experience on this years changes - I believe the ergonomics are a bit different - a bit less sit up and beg, more tucked this year.
Nice bike, not for me at my age and I'm also in the more is less camp. I know your Kawasaki is more expensive but to me worth that little bit extra and it's got the looks to die for.
This is probably a better road bike than the street triple RS but it doesn't look as good sadly. It looks better than it did though. One thing i noticed on this and other reviews is the dash looks a lot like the STRS dash that no one likes with the weird rev counter. Can this be changed as its not like this on the none SP version?
@@Pseudo_Placebo You’re right but it isn’t terrible. My street triples dash is worse, however I don’t pay a lot of attention to it. The rpm view is horrible but it’s easy to focus more on just the sound.
If you took the colours gold, grey, black and blue and used them to create a colour palette (or worse still for the MT-10, black, dark red and aqua), it would be a hodge podge ugly mess. Yet some of these bike makers for some reason think it's going make bikes look good. I reckon they should go back to pen and paper before they throw their random buckets of colours at their bikes. Just my opinion. But I guess folks must like them if they're buying them.

Looks so much better than the older models very nice.. great review dude 😊 👍👍🏍️Pete
Thank you!
Absolutely love the new MT09 Especially the SP but I'm not sure about the black colour scheme? Nice little first ride video TMF!!😊
Fantastic bike and as always, a great review!
Many thanks!
Hi Andy, just a quick question, how does this Yamaha compare to your Z900RS SE and which do you prefer.Thank you for your many videos most enjoyable.
MT-09 is lighter & fully loaded, Kaw is a lot heavier, very little options.
Go test ride for yourself
Apples and staircases, they're not even in the same category. Both great in their own right.
my pleasure - I actually find it similarly exciting - I prefer the RS though for looks, comfort and sound...but it is a bit more pricey
" Stuck Behind Two Vans", Crikey, Here in Cornwall You'd have Trouble Keeping Up With Them,😁😁
I keep thinking I'd like to get one of the Yamaha CP3 motors. Therefore, I'm glad to see your review. Have a nice week and please like always keep the shiny side up. 😎
Thanks, you too!
Special performance package is what I wanted to say Mr flyer and tell Mrs flyer she has made a great choice on her new Kawasaki
Prefer the 765rs but I’m a triumph man
I always thought “SP’ is Sport Performance😎🇨🇦…..great vid
Fantastic 8k, my bike of 2024 as well ❤
That 360 camera was sticking out a fair way there, i'd have it within the width of my mirrors as a guide to how much room there is. Could make a right mess of someone's paintwork.
Yes - I am of course careful.....
Good honest initial review. What jeans were you wearing? I’m on my third pair and still can’t find any I find comfy.
I was in my trusty PMY Deux jeans - see bikerheadz.co.uk for details
Great bike and now they've sorted the brakes it's even better. This will fly off the forecourts.
Great review xxx
Thank you!
A great review, it seems it is worth spending the extra money to get the SP version. I am interested what you think of the footage from your new camera, it was great to see you on the bike as well the helmet view. Good to see Rod Stewart making a guest appearance.
Hehe - glad you liked that.....
Great review as usual but it looks like a pain to keep clean which I suppose is true for all naked machines. Cheers
That car check thing is excellent.
Excellent review as alway Sir
Just update that bike list to the new Mrs Flyer bike lol 😊
i watch your reviews to get a honest reviews and size wise i am only 5 foot 5 tall so i am nearish you ,this is probbably the new bike im going to get ,,good on yer
I've yet to hear a bad word about this bike.Cheers.
I thought exactly the same!! Mind you who'd want to be a pillion on the back of one of these!
Thanks for the video! I’m wondering what mount you are using for the Insta360 - please can you share?
Just a motorcycle handlebar mount I got from eBay
Amazing reviews as always. Can you please tell me which insta360 you bought and what was the pack you chose (accessories). Thanks!
It's the Insta 360 X4 with the motorcycling pack (plus I already had some accesories from the two X3's and original insta 360 I bought)....
Thanks a lot. Any other accessories that you recommend for the insta360? Like those you say you have from the x3
Not really - maybe a spare battery, that's about it.....
Where did you get that actor from on your advert 😂😂😂😂..... Brilliant Andy 👍👏👏👏👏🫂
Thank you Iain!
Exactly right - in that context it is good value....
Bet that tash and wig brought you back to your youth 😉😂 (all in good fun). Still would be too tempted by the MT-10, but I’m a bit spoilt by too much bhp. ‘Bike of the year’ surprised me!
I'm in my youth!!!
Really nice bike TMF, would love a ride on one of those. New 360 quality is good but wobbles a bit on the outrigger, maybe a setting may fix that? Anyway, another good vid 👍
Yes experimentation required....
There is one SP for sale in the US right now, impossible to find them, teh regular version is available
Great bike! Good video 👍
Good vid, Ohlins and KYB forks are worth ut.
Hey tmf. Great real world review as always. What’s your thoughts on the touring ability? I know it’s not a touring bike per se. Do you think you could throw a screen and luggage on it and head to the alps? Great work, ✌️
Yes defo - it's a comfy ride, some throw over bags and away you go!
Yes I'm a subscriber of Tim's - great channel....
I know Shad do a full pannier/ top box system for the mt10 so I can’t see why not.
If you can do a comparison of this and KTM 990, that would be great. Time to move on from my STR 2013. 😊😊😊
😅Nice bike love the blue wheels and Ohlins not so much the tiny petrol tank capacity but at that price for a middle weight naked not my bike of the year that would be the Triumph Speed 400 in Blue
Another bike with Blue wheels and Ohlins the Aprilia Mille Edwards Rep
You didn't mention your pet hate the rubber bands on the handle bars😂
I'm fitting Weiser Technik modules and a Denali D6 LED brake running light to my R1300GS to sort out the rear lights or lack of today
Thanks for the review
J
Funny how subjective bike looks are - I dislike pretty much everything about this bike personally - but there's no denying the CP3 is a great motor. Not a bike I thought you'd love, but great to see you out on it. IMO it can't hold a candle to the Striple RS, build quality is so much better on the Triumph.
Fair enough if you prefer the Street Triple (it is a fantastic bike), but I wouldn’t say the quality of the Triumph is any better than the Yamaha personally.
I agree tmf - i dont have either of those bikes but previous experience for me implies yamaha reliability/build quality is better than truimph.
I think the Triumph attention to detail and styling is much better.
Great perspective
😂 love the mustache and glasses
Delighted to hear that!
Both versions great bikes. I think I would stick to the standard one as the difference for me would not be worth it. However I would prefer the xsr 900 over both due mainly to aesthetics and colour options.
New camera is very good but also slightly weird view. Something to get use to.
I'm in the experimenting phase!
I quite miss the music: 🎼Hey kids it's the Missenden Flyer🎼
You're the first to mention it - I'm so glad you noticed! It's not gone forever if popular demand wants it back (I had quite a lot of people say they didn't like it).....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes, I met someone once who didn't like The Carpenters. We live in a strange world....
I don’t like the keyless ignition… I like the key option always! Especially when I read on Reddit the guy with speed triple his keyless didn’t work … he couldn’t start the bike up! He waited month until the fixed the keyless!
Yes I must admit I think it's a feature no one was asking for (except in a few cases like large touring bikes with central locking panniers etc)
None too keen on the blue wheels, or the TFT, that aside it does seem to be a peach.
Are you using the OA4 also on this video? As the quality of both forward and 360 are excellent.
Yes I am - for non-360 stuff I now exclusively use the OA4
Just the Ohlin shock will be around £1300 if you bought it yourself.
Exactly!
Which bike would you buy between the regular 09, GSXS750 (4cylinder), street Tripple R?
Street Triple
Morning Andy I think good choice for bike of the year I love them 09’s best of the three so I’m told I haven’t ridden any of them but I’m thinking of buying one towards end of year as a winter bike but obviously not when it’s icy and especially when the salt goes down it be locked up in the garage with my rocket and it’s got to be the SP hasn’t it for £12000 that’s not bad really I don’t think anyway ride safe bye for now
Morning!
Yes it is a tough call....
Yes you can….
Beautiful looking bike Andy 😎😎😎😎👍
I'm not sure I would go as far as saying Beautiful but I could live with it now....defo an improvement over last year's model.
The sound of a triple...👌
I’m 75 and I’m considering the XSR900. I can get one for $10,000 which seems like a bargain after owning BMWs, Ducatis and KTM s for years.
Looks great
So the closest competitor to the targeted performance envelope of the MT09 SP is Triumph’s 765RS, the knock on the Triumph units are the gear ratios are too low overall and more problematic the ratios are very close, and is more an optimization typically chosen to give a power delivery suitable for track use applications rather than what is ideal for use in conventional street riding temperament. Is Yamaha’s gearing choice as “busy” as that of the Triumph 765 machines?
Not that I recall….
The only bike I would rate higher is the XSR900GP but it is the same engine! 😁
Good review of what sounds a great bike but I never like the looks of most Yamaha's. Untidy engine, awkward lines and that exhaust would be ok if hidden under a car.
Fair enough!
Any thoughts from your own experience on this years changes - I believe the ergonomics are a bit different - a bit less sit up and beg, more tucked this year.
...I also prefer the new front end....
Nice bike, not for me at my age and I'm also in the more is less camp. I know your Kawasaki is more expensive but to me worth that little bit extra and it's got the looks to die for.
Yeah I'm with you on that.....
Give me the MT09 motor any day. I always find inline fours bland.
Did you even mention the quick shifter? Maybe I missed it...
Must have done surely….
Yes I believe it can.....but don't bet the farm on it as I'm not 100% sure
There’s 3 option I believe.
Yes, it's got 4 different styles to choose from
Why doesn't Yamaha take a look at BMW to see how they really build displays?
@@Pseudo_Placebo You’re right but it isn’t terrible. My street triples dash is worse, however I don’t pay a lot of attention to it. The rpm view is horrible but it’s easy to focus more on just the sound.
Yes
SP usually stands for “Sports Production”. Close enough.
I think it works (but take your general point!)
Hey TMF ,where can I get one those headbands that include hair?
E-Bay.....
Same TFT software/dissplayas the triumph tiger ?
No I think not....
How does it compare to your Kawasaki 900 RS ?
Completely different in every respect!
