Got to agree about the lack of buttons in modern cars and everything being screen driven. My mate who's a wheelchair user and drives with hand controls won't even consider anything past mid 2000's, he wants buttoms, nobs and non electric seats, so when driving he can just easily adjust things, especially important when one hand has the contols and has to steer. Suprised the miles you covered but unfortunately, I'm not surprised with your comments about the charging network. There were two thing accomplised, money raised for a good cause and illustrating the the good and bad of the world EV experience. 👍

My friend was an engineer for a global car manufacturer. 20 years ago he had the idea of all EVs using the exact same battery. The driver could drive to a charging station where pre-charged batteries would be underneath the forecourt. Yoys drive up to the 'pump' and AI robot would swap out your old battery and slide in the fully charged one. Same time as a petrol fill up. But the issue was manufacturers not wanting to work together to achieve a standardisation - even though many cars share common parts under the bonnet.

Perfectly encapsulates why the uptake of electric cars is so slow. There's little infrastructure to support them and when you do find a charger then chances are it won't work or there's a massive queue.

Huh? There is a massive network now and still growing. Wasn't like this 10 years ago but now it's all changed. Public charging is there if you need it and it costs money now so less likely that people will hog them. What is slowing the uptake is the mountain of disinformation from people who have never owned/ driven an EV or intention of buying one. Add to that the huge campaigns by newspapers/ websites etc to constantly put out odd scare stories like EVs are too heavy and car park destroyers. I'm sure your evoques and Qashqais are featherweights. I've driven and owned Evs,V6 V8, straight sixes etc and every car serves its purpose. Stuck in town or snail pace traffic on a commute the EV makes more sense. Plus I have fuel station at home. I honestly don't know what goes on in people's heads. If you don't want one don't buy one. Don't try and put out dumb BS. It's just makes those people look stupid.

Nice one! I think the range element with an EV depends on the car you have massively, not so much the network, although that is obviously a big factor as well. I regularly drive around 22/23 hours in my 2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance from the UK to Hungary covering around 1200 miles in that time, and obviously that time also includes charging and the occasional holdup at the Eurotunnel so they can definitely do the miles. The good thing about the Tesla is, it integrates the charging into the route planning, it shows you what charger is free, what charger is broken, how long it’ll take, pictures of the facilities where you’ll be stopping etc. I could not imagine an EV experience like in some cars where you have to plan the charge stops yourself, no way.
The quickest I’ve done that journey was in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sportiva diesel which was just under 20 hours including 1 fuel stop and 2 other pee stops. So definitely not the sort of journey you’d do with your family. I would however say it was more tiring in the Alfa because the miles seem never ending as you just keep on driving, whereas in my Tesla, I can look forward to seeing oh there’s only 2/3 more check points (charges) left and that kind of gives me a better idea of progress and also allows me to naturally take a small nap if I want every 3/4 hours as opposed to driving 12 hours or more in one go just because “I can”. The last trip was done with only 5 charges, not including the charge I set off with, and I think most people over a 20+ hour trip would probably end up stopping at least 5 times if not more. So it’s not particularly inconvenient.
Cost wise, the last trip I did in my Tesla cost £107 for those 1200 ish miles and I only charged at Superchargers on the way. The Alfa was almost £200 as they completely mug you off with fuel prices on German motorways.
So the cost (for me) was almost half of a modern diesel and given that I’m driving a 500+hp EV and not a silly 140hp diesel means that the performance is not even comparable. Obviously the purchase price is a different story. And obviously the cost becomes marginal when you’re charging at home.
All in all though, for my needs and I feel for most people who could charge at home, something like a Model 3 would normally work.

Great video Matt. Super impressed with how many miles you were able to clock up, and the way your team went through the challenges. It's a little frustrating to see so many issues with the charger network. You'd think putting electricity into a car should be one of the simplest things in the world, but it's been massively over complicated , let down by bad infrastructure, under provisioning and poor supporting software - I really think some of these providers should be fined if customers consistently find themselves unable to charge as a motivation to improve quality of service (especially given how much they are charging for charging in the first place!). The BYD Seal looks pretty interesting too! Can I ask what model of dash-cam you were using as I'm looking to upgrade mine shortly?

I like the BYD Seal as the equipment levels and performance are so impressive for the price and like Skoda drivers of old BYD owners eulagise about them like they are god's gifts to motoring. The problem I have is that for all the marketing, pricing etc the car has some serious issues that many of us can't and should not overlook:
    1) The boot size is a joke for a family car, it is no bigger than an average hatchback and is so narrow for many requirements (golfers especially) is is a non-starter.
    2) If the boot size is not annoying enough it is a saloon opening so you can get much in the gap anyway.
    3) Everything is on the screen and it is borderline dangerous to try and change even basic settings. Now I know most manufacturers do this but they don't bury things several layers into the OS to find it. Oh and the turning screen is really not that useful.
    4) For a car that is so long and heavy I am struggling to understand why the leg room in the back is actually quite poor compared to competitors especially with no room under the seats for your feet. That and why the range is not that inspiring as the efficiency does not stack up well.
    5) The smell in the cabin is actually quite nauseating, not a nice new car, leather smell but like you are trapped in a room you have just painted, the VOC's are actually quite frightening.
For me it is such a shame as I was a motivated buyer who felt the Excellence model with it's power, the equipment as standard and the price was unbeatable for fun and value unlike any other EV. Sadly though as a family car and from a safety and space perspective it was a complete non-starter and failed on too many requirements so my hunt continues !

How much time did you spend on the chargers and how many times did you have to charge? Cost? For your mileage a petrol car might have meant, say, 3 stops totalling 20 minutes. Yes I know charging time gives extra nosh time which you might not get with the petrol stops. 17 hours EV running? 22 hours with petrol might have got you well over 1k miles. Some interesting stats here. For me, all of them negative, as far as an EV is concerned!

Thanks for a great video, associated with a very worthy cause. The car is hideous, too complex, too big, too heavy. If the future of motoring looks like that and has the added bonus of stress looking for a working or available charger, plus the mobile signal to download yet another app, then I think we are done for. If govt was that concerned to keep us moving in independent transport, they would have significantly improved the infrastructure instead of leaving it to the private sector. Although to have enough charging capacity it's going to need significant changes to the national grid, and that isn't happening either. Join just a few dots and you can see that EVs are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Nothing wrong with EV’s if you buy a Tesla, charging network works every time and no queues

  • @anthonystevens8683

It's great that EV's can now go places some distance away and the range anxiety has been reduced somewhat but as you mention the charging network still has some work to do, even more now that there are increasing EV quotas for EV's by the car makers. I will resist a car with everything touch screen for as long as I can, basic things need physical basic switches that you can feel and press and I don't include those touch haptic things in this. Well done guys and thankyou for sharing.

I'll put down a lot of those charging problems to the car. Get a Tesla next time and it will not only work, it will also charge faster.

I'm not at all a fan of EVs, but I quite like the BYD Seal. It's so much nicer, and has a much better interior than the Tesla Model 3 it sort-of copies. BYD have made a better Tesla than Tesla. Sorry Elon, but you need to up your game.

It's baffling to me that you had so many problems charging. I've driven up and down the length of the country in an electric Citroen and have had one charger, just one, that didn't work - and BP Pulse are well known for their rubbish chargers. It makes me think the car is the issue rather than the chargers.

A great demonstration of the futility of driving an EV looks one size doesn't fit all were with a petrol and diesel one size does fit all and no wonder why there is a downturn in the sale of EVs and the older Mercedes-Benz covered the most miles which is better an older car or a new EV as the Mercedes-Benz is about 30 years old and still going strong will the BYD be around in 30 years time no way it will be land fill which car is better for the environment an older car or an EV who knows that older Mercedes-Benz will more than likely be still around in 30 years time l know for a fact my 1997 Toyota Hilux will be still around in 27 years time
