I'd say that the biggest mistake a lot of new players make is trusting their dice. Dice are random. Randomness is bad for winning games. One of the biggest leaps in my gaming skill came from playing AD&D, because the entire point of the game there is to set yourself up so that even if you roll poorly you have a good chance of success.

Yeah, too many people feel they should be guarunteed rolls because of stats. Even +2 dice rolls can fail. I just rolled no hits on 4 dice with relentless 😂😭
Acknowledge the dice but don't blame them on your loss

Well that sounds all reasonable and logical, but I have seen enough Yu-Gi-Oh to know you have to trust the heart of dice!

@@CanYouRollaCrit In my first ever game in kill team my opponent charged my pathfinder with his death guard and rolled five ones. In that moment I learned that playing kill team you need to never forget that dices are not you friends. 😁

Just play breachers. Don't *allow* your dice to be bad.

Apart from getting good sleep I'd add to remember to eat (and hydrate) enough. It's something I learned a long time ago, while attending WFB 6th ed tournaments.
When you concentrate a lot your brain eats up your sugar reserves quickly, so it's important to make up for the losses. Even though you normally shouldn't eat simple carbohydrates (chocolate bars etc) a tournament is a pretty legitimate excuse to have a cheat day.

On mistake number 1, I learned from Heywoah to bring a kitchen mat/standing mat to stand on with you to the event. It's saved my legs/feet ever since.

Ahhh yeah I heard of the yoga mat tech, it seems sound!

standing up is very crucial for me when planning my turns

@@CanYouRollaCrit I do feel like I need to look away once in a while though, or I suffer from the one point you made of focusing so hard in one area, or mapping out all the moves in my head that I miss things my opponent might be up to. If I find my opponent is thinking about their move for some time, I might sit down to look over my ploys and operatives again to make sure I'm not missing anything. Or even look up their info. Then when it's my turn it's like getting a fresh perspective on the board. I don't know what a tournament is like, but I find walking around the table to get new perspectives can be very beneficial too. I have a nasty habit of forgetting about models (including my own) that are inside large terrain pieces or open cargo boxes, etc.

    Interesting video!
I refuse to stand up for most of the game though, only when I need to have a good look at the board. Back problems, man.
The sleep one is all too accurate.

Appreciate hearing about that last mistake, your friend Rob is a wise man indeed. Definitely the most important thing to learn for a competitive player, I think.

As an ex- Xwing player (One of the top players in Australia)
Standing up for the game is essential of seeing where your ships were going to go, this skill as transferred to KT , so you can see all the board and not what's just in front of you.
Its taxing to stand all day, but if you're hungry for the win... you need to

Biggest mistake I made was not living in a small country lol. Id love to play in a tournament but It's hard to justify flying across the country for my first game.

    1. Paying the entry fee?
    2. Showing up?
    3. Not using the loaded dice?
