I feel that not only is it important for creators to realize and understand this “comparison” idea but for the audience to as well. Obviously you can’t control what your audience is thinking but when they see they’re favorite creator living a happy fun life and they think it’s their reality I feel that just raises the bar for everyone to compete against who can project the more happy and fun life when it might not even be real to begin with. So when a creator decides they are going to be transparent it almost does them a disservice because they’re overall views, numbers, brand image can take a hit. Obviously for a youtuber the social media related part is the most important in this interview. I think the most important part - I mean the THING which mostly affects not just our future but our actual life, even our past ... AND OUR LUNGS - is from 1;19;05 in that interview video. Quite emotional, Elon holds back his tears...
Well said. My solution; occasionally seek out places completely devoid of cell service, internet and screens for a few days, where you can think clearly without having those things jabbing at your attention. People do it so seldomly nowadays that they forget how amazing it feels to completely forget about their phone after a week off the grid. Don't get me wrong, I love tech... but occasionally unplugging from it entirely is a great way to regain some perspective on what's important in your life.

Social media is a weird one. Great for friends, great for creators, great for people who want to see and watch cool stuff. But somewhere in the middle is that fine line that shakes the balance. I say try and use it for inspiration and not jealousy or hate. Thanks for sharing Casey, I missed that podcast.
You have to find that balance between "real friends" and "internet friends" because mostly they are not the same and you should treat good friends well.
I started doing YT about 6 months ago, and about 3 weeks ago the YT algo picked up my videos, and at the peak I had 40,000 views in a day. It gave me such a good feeling that people were watching and liking my videos, 40,000 is A LOT of people. However... I started looking at other animation channels and comparing my self them and all I wanted was more, 3 weeks later the YT algo slowed down, and my views went to as low as 1,000 in a day. I remember when I FIRST started YT a 1,000 views would be great. But now anything under that 40,000 makes me feel bad in comparison to the other "successful" Casey, Elon and job are correct, this platform is really addicting especially if it's your full time job (obviously it's not mine I have 21k subs) But I already see patterns emerge. cool to the see the King talk some real stuff.
Masculine Man damn dude your exactly right lol I only have 3k subs and one of my vlogs went viral with 1.8 mill view and now I feel like I’m wasting my time when the rest only get a few hundred views.
Wealth & Fame are entirely relative... People that own super yachts get depressed because someone has a bigger one... There are entire peer reviewed papers written on the subject. Find happiness within. Not on how many thumbs up your comment gets.
I think your podcast is an incredible balance to your youtube. RUclips is positive and exciting and successful while the podcast shows struggle and insecurity. What you do very well, is inspire. Your videos never show off, they inspire. And your podcast, although it shows struggles, it inspires and teaches and encourages your audience to find solutions. And while life may be difficult and imperfect, there is always happiness to be found and with the right character and attitude. And that's inspiring
The biggest reasons I watch your videos, is because of the way your present your content. You present it in a way that is bordering on cinematic, but also so tangible, so easy to relate to. The main reason I started watching you was due to a video by another blogger on how you vlog, and why you're so good at it. The videography aspect, the cinematography etc. have all been developed to look completely natural and off hand, but in reality are very meticulously crafted. Your storytelling is phenomenal, and that's something I most enjoy from your videos, but it's the learning aspect, learning how I can improve my own videos and storytelling that brings me back. A lot of people watch videos on youtube so passively, to watch someone else's strengths, and enjoy them vicariously. Same thing we have with reality shows. But, there's actually a lot of opportunities to learn in many of the biggest channels, regardless of the content. You're the best, Casey.
I completely agree, the relentless perfect images people are subject to online makes those suffering with depression, anxiety and loneliness feel even more isolated,
It's one of my favourite JRE podcasts (Right next to the Maynard James Keenan ones). I love how the media just try to paint a bad picture from about 30 seconds of the podcast when it is a 2 and a half hour masterpiece
It's one of my favorites too. I've watched it twice. Mainstream media is nothing more than a distraction while the important things that matter go unseen by the average person. Unless you know where to look.
that quote is pretty wild. "comparrison is the thief of joy" I think social media is useful platform when used for happiness, and joy and bonding a community etc.... Some people compare their life and think "man why am i not a big youtuber, why am i not doing this, why am i not running for office"etc... Its not healthy to envy or compare like that. I think social media needs to unite us. Thats why we have these communities: vloggers, autographers, gamers, etc.... These niche communities give us a place to be happy
Don't base your self-image and happiness on social media. What you see online isn't usually an accurate depiction of what's happening in real life. 💪🏼💯
completely on point casey! i love that you are so reflected about what you do and how you make a living. us creators need to be aware of how our content is perceived by our audience. and we have a responsibility to make sure that our audience sees us as entertainment first and not as reference point for their own life. spot on! 🔥
At first it was a struggle, you could smell and touch the energy in the room. But listening to Elon slowly but surely become himself and break the barrier he assumed he would need for a pod cast/public speaking only made him more genuine. Its ssooooo hard to think of him as anything but a super human but he truly is just an awkward nerd who needs a little motivation to open up. He is actually fucking human being ladies and gents!
@@masonthurston3773 it's only legal because it's so deeply integrated in our history and society, if it had been recently made it would've been made illegal. You cannot argue that just because alcohol is legal that we should allow more shit to stack up on our plate. Don't even bother saying that weed isn't harmful either because there's enough evidence that shows how prolonged usage of weed leads to grey matter decrements in the brain.
I listened to the podcast and it was incredible. I do disagree with Elon on the novelty/newness of this phenomenon. It is different only in scope, not in nature… People have always wanted happy family photos… They have always shared photo albums to show how happy their lives are… No one ever shows off the picture of the kids screaming, or the parents losing it… It’s just now that Instagram has become everyone’s photo album for the world. The most amazing part of that interview, IMHO, was Elon talking about the dangers of artificial intelligence. It’s the first time, in my life, I have truly understood what the concern is about.
Yeah but guess what bro....in the old days everyone wasnt constantly looking at other peoples pictures all day...you didnt get to look at strangers photo albums whenever you wanted to...thats where it causes jealousy...we used to look at photo albums with family and friends and talk about memories...now we just scroll through pictures of people we never see in person anymore, people that we used to be friends with on vacation, pictures of the girl that we have a crush on with her boyfriend...you get the picture?
You are not completely correct. Look at family photography from the time before smartphones with cams existed. In many, many photographs (like Christmas photographs) people looked quite serious. These photographs were not about showing a happy family, but to ascertain that the family existed, that the family members were present at this imporant ritual. The same applies to many holiday photographs. PS: this interpretation has been formulated by the French philosopher Pierre Bourdieu. :-)
back in my day, i'd just hide outside in a tree and stare at beautiful people through binoculars into their bedroom windows.. until that time when I fell out of a tree and got ran over..
Not true .No one Photoshoped his family pics and a small fraction of people saw that photos compared to now .and he is not talking only about family photos ( that are less than 1% uploaded on insta ) he talks about selfies and pics with friends or pics from the club or stories .

Casey, loved your take on the "scrubbed clean" version of our lives that we post on instagram, youtube, etc--particularly how you didn't vilify this type of content, just advised that it's best to view it as "entertainment" rather than a direct reflection of reality. I have watched hundreds of your daily vlogs, still discovering new ones every day, and your travelling and the way you document them has really allowed me to go on the journey with you. I don't love to travel as much as you do, but I do love experiencing different places around the world from your perspective.
Honestly just watch any Joe Rogan Podcast the dude is amazing and very intelligent. He has a very wide range of guests and keeps it very interesting and thought provoking!! 10/10
I agree, and he talks about such a wide variety of topics... it's like listening to two interesting people talk more than listening to an actual interview. ^^
This is a complex issue but I think it comes back to individual responsibility... as consumers at some point it’s on us to make a choice of what we consume and also how we interpret it interact with it... 2 people can watch you or me and one may be motivated and inspired the other may be depressed and down on themselves... Why is that? Did we as creators do that? From my perspective it’s down to individuals to take what they want from what they consume. That said choose what and who you watch responsibly...
Totally agree! One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone blames social media for their problems. When someone accuses Facebook of promoting a negative thing. At what point did all these people lose touch with the reality that THEY make their own decisions as to what affects them and how. Facebook doesn't create drama. People do. Weak, under developed minds do. It's a choice and they need to take responsibility for the choices they made.
Great comment Roberto. How do you feel the personal responsibility compares to how platforms like Instagram, RUclips and Facebook have used data and social science to tap into people's subconscious impulses and keep them consuming and on the platform? I think the responsibility is shared by the platform and the individual (not the creator). Thoughts?
Casey your videos never steal joy from me. In fact, your success and lifestyle inspire me to get out and take control of my life and achieve as much as I can.
I absolutely love that you encourage people to listen to that podcast in its entirety. It’s impotant that poeple do! The relevance of the discussed topics and Elon‘s unpretentious brilliance absolutely dwarf the inflated joint scandal.
Thanks for posting this video Casey, really makes us RUclips creators/viewers, step back and look at reality instead of trying to be like someone and potentially failing and hit rock bottom.
I find no reason to be sad or jealous while watching other peoples video's. I use it for insight and knowledge. And also motivation to achieve more. And believe its a lot healthier than watching most of whats on TV.
the difference to TV however is that it is mostly clear that what you're seeing is an act. on youtube it feels like this is the reality of what people are actually living. you feel like there is no script. you feel a lot closer to the influencers life, than you actually are.
Social media does make people seem this way and make people seem unhappy but I really take it as, “ I love how this person lives, I want to do the same! And here I am! Living my best life. Its really just inspiring and not giving unhappiness” makes me work hard for what I want! And I’m currently very happy!!
Casey I love this video so much & while I didn't watch the podcast, I'm glad you had talked about something that I don't think (I could be wrong) it has been spoken about. Comparison is a thief of joy has been stuck with me ever since I was 17. Back then, i was unhappy and was suicidal driven (though thank goodness I never ever acted upon it) because for one I had anxiety along with PTSD and I easily compared myself to & envied these awesome group of kids I got with at a church summer camp. I was depressed a lot because I compared myself to them. Then something happened that brought that saying to heart. I remember I was sitting in an auditorium with a q&a with our teachers and one teacher said something that I felt was supposed to be for me and it changed my life forever. He simply said "comparing yourself to someone is a sin." Yeah I know it's a little weird I get it if you aren't religious and you think that is weird but here's why it's been stuck to my heart and saved me a whole lot more years of depression. When it comes to comparing yourself to this huge instagrammer, your smart intelligent best friend, your richer or more well off cousin, this RUclipsr with a million subscribers, you are not only going to envy them or possibly hate them, you're going to damage your self esteem & cause you to be less empathetic. Right now self esteem wise I'm at a better place where I am 80% comfortable with my skin and more prone to look for inspiration that can grow my dreams instead of feeling sad that someone that seems to have it all together is living the dream. You Casey are the biggest inspirations to not give up my dreams, whatever my dreams may be. However, I know you're human too just as I am. And I can't really compare myself to a RUclipsr or a huge social media influencer or someone with a pretty big title because for 1) I never know if there's something going on when the phone or camera is turned off & 2) I can't always trust someone that has "everything all together and is living a perfect life of a dream." In other words, I can't trust someone that isn't honest with themselves of their imperfections online. With my Instagram, (and I know I'm not big or anything I'm aware of that😜) I try to be honest with myself without sharing too much information because I'm not that ready to be an open book. That's what I've been trying to do for couple years. Sharing moments that I just wasn't at my best (again I have PTSD so my life is bound to not be perfect at all). While I try to be open with myself, I also want to share a healthy amount of positivity because that's what I need in my life too as well as everyone else's. So because I stopped comparing myself, I was blessed to be able to be empathetic and more of a loving kind of a gal even if my mental health hadn't really gotten better for a long time until I got the help that I needed at age 20 which was half a year ago. Also since I stopped comparing myself I always look at Instagram and YT Vlogs in. A different, positive, perspective choices. I either take it as an inspiration to fuel my dreams or if I'm not into it, awesome if they are❤️
a little fun fact for anyone that's interested: getting rid of your expectations to attain happiness is actually the main buddhist principle. we've known this for like 3000 years haha
ChokeNation well I don’t think joe Rogans viewers very much care about Casey’s agenda nor does Casey have anything of value besides vlogging to bring to the show
So so right. I see how people live there lives on RUclips and sometimes compare it to mines and sometimes feel sad. And other times find inspiration and follow my dreams and like to have the life I want to have. But at the end of the day, happiness is within. Not what we see or what someone else have. Our happiness.
Instagram is just a collection of highlights in your life. I can understand the festering backlash against these platforms as being a well of narcissism, but honestly, I could not care less. If anything, I find it interesting to see what other people are doing with their lives; it's a form of long-distance people-watching for me.
This is why I started my ‘Facebook/Instagram Detox Diet’ on January 1st of 2020 and the last 8 months had been the happiest months on my life in the last 10 years. I only open Facebook on my desktop computer once a week or once every two weeks to check if there’s anything that truly needs my attention. And I open my Instagram app once a month or once every two months for the same reason. I live a much rewarding life now and I spend a lot more time playing with my daughters (5 and 2 years old). Life changing, give it a try! ❤️
Although Casey is also a fascinating and influential human, and although I would enjoy watching him on Joe Rogan, he isn't on my wish list and here is why: He has a huge vlog and almost uploads daily, we know a lot about him and hearing him speak wouldn't be that big of a surprise. I think this is why Elon's podcast will be the most liked. He is very illusive and has never been interviewed in that type of setting before where he was completely vulnerable. I love when Joe has those type of people on, people who rarely interview and when they are on the podcast we get to see inside their mind.
MrScottyMillz good point, most people already know Casey, he could gain some new fans on their but most would have seen or heard of him or be a fan and know him detailedly
Hey Casey, maybe you should do a video on the problems you have in your life, make a realistic video about whatever you struggle about, whatever it is. waking up, getting places, marriage strains, stresses and pressures on you. Might be an interesting perspective.
Great video. Social media is incredibly powerful and a great tool, but if it gets a hold of you it can become a really dangerous thing. I appreciate Casey actually tackling an issue that might be considered quite controversial with honesty and integrity.

You can buy a pendant that contain volcanic rock and tourmaline, which creates up to 6,000 negitive ions. It helps to ground your body, which allows EMF to pass out of you. Most electronic devices can ionize the air out of negitive ions by replacing them with positive ions, which damage our nerve cells.
HAHAHAHAAHHAHA wtf are you talking about grounding your body with volcanic rock? holy shit dude.

Great video as always.. Hello from Thailand..
Hello!
But now anything under that 40,000 makes me feel bad in comparison to the other "successful"
Casey, Elon and job are correct, this platform is really addicting especially if it's your full time job (obviously it's not mine I have 21k subs) But I already see patterns emerge. cool to the see the King talk some real stuff.
Masculine Man damn dude your exactly right lol I only have 3k subs and one of my vlogs went viral with 1.8 mill view and now I feel like I’m wasting my time when the rest only get a few hundred views.
Masculine Man I love your videos!
You get my sub 😊
6 months old and already got a boost? Damn son, I've been chasing it since 1 year.
I love how the media just try to paint a bad picture from about 30 seconds of the podcast when it is a 2 and a half hour masterpiece
the first ms.pat interview is gold too
Well said Alex.
But that's the way it is & that's the way it'll always be...
It's one of my favorites too. I've watched it twice. Mainstream media is nothing more than a distraction while the important things that matter go unseen by the average person. Unless you know where to look.
Casey should totally go on the JRE

that quote is pretty wild.
"comparrison is the thief of joy"
I think social media is useful platform when used for happiness, and joy and bonding a community etc....

His memory is fricking ridiculous
+Tom Preston
His intelligence ends where his bias begin
He uploads so much though. Like a 3 hour podcast every freaking day dude.
you mean : Joe "doesnt let anyone finish a thought" Rogan

2 years later and this video has came at the right time for me... props to you casey! thanks for this video
I find no reason to be sad or jealous while watching other peoples video's. I use it for insight and knowledge. And also motivation to achieve more. And believe its a lot healthier than watching most of whats on TV.
For you.
It works for you this way but believe it makes millions unhappy.
Then you've won my friend & I am super happy for you!
the difference to TV however is that it is mostly clear that what you're seeing is an act. on youtube it feels like this is the reality of what people are actually living. you feel like there is no script. you feel a lot closer to the influencers life, than you actually are.
Social media does make people seem this way and make people seem unhappy but I really take it as, “ I love how this person lives, I want to do the same! And here I am! Living my best life. Its really just inspiring and not giving unhappiness” makes me work hard for what I want! And I’m currently very happy!!
Edgar Esquivel 👏
I either take it as an inspiration to fuel my dreams or if I'm not into it, awesome if they are❤️
9:23 thats the best part
a little fun fact for anyone that's interested: getting rid of your expectations to attain happiness is actually the main buddhist principle. we've known this for like 3000 years haha
We’re all just chimps. And to chimps comparing yourself to other chimps matters. Status matter. It’s life or death for them. And to us.
It's relative to the culture, and true or false accordingly. In the states - no doubt.
Eden Castillo - More or less according to the culture. I hope that helps you sleep tonight.

So so right. I see how people live there lives on RUclips and sometimes compare it to mines and sometimes feel sad. And other times find inspiration and follow my dreams and like to have the life I want to have. But at the end of the day, happiness is within. Not what we see or what someone else have. Our happiness.
First impression.... I LOVE that you keep it real and explain the context at the beginning. Major props
Pretty sure Buddha came up with that happiness theory before Elon Musk did.
