What helped me a lot was learning a bunch of triad patterns (I mean, just playing three notes) - not just the patterns, but the which is the first, third, fifth etc. That "aha" moment when you can visualize exactly which notes chords have in common or which are just a semitone away etc will change your playing. chords, inversions and also open voices , voice leading etc. Sound like scary music theory, but its isn't really.
I'm starting to get more and more into triads and inversions. Now it almost feels like strumming those basic chord patterns sounds so dull. I think Paul might have a video about it. I think most rock/pop songs actually use mostly triads and some added notes, doubled notes are just unnecessary. It opens so much more stuff about playing. And like you said, it's not that hard.
@@reneeschke Try this for example. Also Paul's videos about Frusciante, Hendrix and Mayer have some stuff about triads. Of course you can just google the patterns also. ruclips.net/video/-XJXbxTMkUQ/видео.html
Triads are heaven! I'm just getting through that "aha" moment and I already created a kind of Joe Pass/Wes Montgomery chord progression and I just love it!
I've been doing this as well, making my own triads out of different positions on the neck using just 3 strings. I have the major scale and all notes across first 12 frets written down for quick reference.

Paul you are Gandalf of guitar. Your lessons are exactly what most of us are looking for.
6:28 this is the one of the best intros from the legendary ledZep song..
btw i just subscribe my wifes acc paul 🤫😁 its been 2yrs since i followed you .from old ,to your new studio.loving from Phillipines
I absolutely agree! While not wishing to ever disappear into a realm of jazz chordage, root/fifth/root/third chords are just asking for a bit added colour from (shock horror) other notes! It's like discovering The Beatles after only ever listening to metal.
C'est intéressant de savoir que ta suite d'accords favorite est "Champs-Elysées" dadadadaadaaa ;)
lol ;)
Nice explanation, and a demonstration of how a little theory can go a long way!
I clicked this video because I thought it was about slash 😳
same
i got baited
but still good tho
#metoo
Damn clickbait
Hahaha.. me too
I've been playing guitar for 11 years. Finally someone explain this to me. Thanks paul
I didnt know Obi Wan Kenobi played the guitar
You gave me some good ideas that culminated in the creation on my new own rhythm. Thanks!
George Harrison used to do a lot of these slash chords, he was a master on descending chords.
The song Michelle is quite interesting too.
Shahriaar M Fahim such a great song. Michelle was created by Paul McCartney, well they were The Beatles, the masters of the good music.
Many great legendary songs are full power chords..thanks bro paul for the stuff
I can’t for the life of me recognize the “song we all know” @ 11:10. Anyone?
Neither can I...
sounds like "to make you feel my love" - Adele
@@ashnpikachu I think you got it right, nice.
@@ashnpikachu not Adele... that's Dylan, my guy. It's from Time Out of Mind... a wonderful record.
It's "Make You Feel My Love" - originally by Bob Dylan but brought into the public's consciousness by Garth Brooks...
"It's all about, upping the game everytime"
- Paul Davids
Next video : Hendrix chords
Can't reference 'em right now... but Paul's done a heap already... p'raps search this channel with 'fills' & 'pentatonic' ....
Being a brass player (mostly trombone) and using guitar for song writing these is the way I hear chord changes. I had to learn the chords to go along with the moving lines in my head
Always enjoy your videos... and they frequently remind me about things I know but had forgotten... There's always one more branch to follow....
I was just about to finish Module 3 of your intermediate course, and now I am enticed to spend the week on slash chords! delicious. The material is never ending and of an irresistible quality. Thanks Paul.
Your videos are amazing. I've always learned something new. Your tempo is perfect for me. I sometimes stoped the video to get it but I'm looking forward for more these videos. Thumbs up
Studio is on point man best of luck to you and your loved ones keep the videos coming you're doing great!
Stressed at work, headphones on and watch Paul calmly do his thang :) can't wait to get home and try it!
I can't recall the last instruction vid Paul made that I didn't like. Damn! that's right, boatloads of songs use the descending bass lines! D/B is so sweet! Love it
Wow, I’m at the end of Method 2, already it’s been a revolution for me!
Great video.
Every new videos are new knowledge for me as a guitar player for 8 years 😆
I came upon these chromatic runs by accident without knowing what they are called. I use them whenever I can by figuring which chords work together. They make a song so much more interesting.
What I love the most about your channel (besides the useful content) are all the details: the sound, the colors, the camera angles, even the font you use in the letters... everything is so fresh and professional, and that means a lot of dedication/time involved in every video. Congrats Paul!
