I grew up in Bahrain I landed on the 17th of August 1970 aged 10 my dad worked on the oil rigs and I married a Bahraini and we had 2 children, I am now living back in the U.K. and now in my 60s I look back and see how Bahrain has changed over the years.

Hello 👋 What I can tell you is that I felt safe during my time living there; however, no place is exempt from bad people doing bad things, unfortunately. Of course, I’ve heard stories of mistreatment of immigrants, especially women. I’ve spoken to migrant workers in Bahrain who’ve had their passports taken once they arrive, not being paid for months, forced to work every day and to live in terrible, crowded conditions with other workers; women working as caregivers or cleaning staff, raped or molested by their employers. There’s a likelihood for people who are vulnerable or in precarious situations to be taken advantaged of. That goes for any country around the world, including my own country, the US. I loved my time in Bahrain. It’s a wonderful place to live; however, I fully acknowledge that, as an American expat, my experience was quite different and privileged from persons coming from other developing countries. It’s horrible because every human life is precious but, regrettably, that is the reality. So, please be careful and protect yourself always no matter where you go. No amount of money worth is worth your life or dignity. 🙏🏽

Hi, there! Thanks for watching and for your kind feedback! 🙏🏽😊 You’ll find that Bahrain is more progressive than Saudi, so the answer is no issues at all. I’d see young couples out enjoying their evening at cafes or the movies. Women do dress more conservatively and you won’t really see people showing PDA but for the most part, people mind their business like they would in any other place. As long as you don’t plan on having a baby while unmarried, visiting your bf should be no problem hehe! You’ll love Bahrain. It’s chill and super safe. They have incredible restaurants, a few bars/night clubs, and lots of malls for shopping. More foreigners live there than local people, so it’s quite diverse. Most people speak English. It’s great and you’ll have an amazing time. ☺️🙌🏽

Oh i am British I lived in beautiful Bahrain for over 20 years its amazing safe and chilled, You can dress what you want at the beach or at the club but be a little conservative during the daytime as they take pride in cleanliness and style.

To answer your question, Bahrain’s population is mostly that of immigrants from all over the world, so in that sense, I’d say it’s probably not too difficult to find a job there. However, I cannot speak to the difficulties of the visa process in doing so because my husband was stationed there through the US military. In this regard, I probably not the most informed person on the subject.
That is a great question that unfortunately I’m unable to give an answer to. If I sent or received mail, it was via the American Navy Base, which works the same as the American postal service. Therefore, I wasn’t charged any import fees or duty. Regarding Amazon shipments on the local economy, unfortunately, I am unsure - sorry!

So if you haven't tried local restaurants, i highly recommend you get out of your comfortable zone and try them.. 1- Eskandron = Best lamb chops in the world.. at 30:00 you missed batelco which is actually the first and i think the only company that is located only in bahrain, viva and zain are used in other countries but batelco is only used in bahrain. also, around almost 1 year ago, they changed the viva company's name to STC

As a matter of fact, when you venture out, you’ll mostly see families doing activities together, grabbing ice cream, or having dinner, etc. Bahrain is a small island, however, so depending on your duration living there, you may run out of things to keep the kids entertained hehe! There’s an indoor water park and arcade at the City Center Mall, camel feeding (although I wouldn’t recommend this if you have sensitivities to engaged and chain animals, which I tend to 😔), there are tons of water sports (although not many public beaches; I’d recommend buying a hotel day pass for access to the private pool and beach). Lastly, often, there will be themed markets and festivals (food festivals, etc.) Once you run out of things to do, thankfully, it’s affordable to fly to Europe and Asia from Bahrain. 😄 Safe travels to you and your family! Excellent video! Abu Dhabi has the same hotel brunch culture and it’s indeterminate if the goal is to cater to the expats, a tourist trap, or legitimately part of Arabic culture.

Hello, Traasia. Thanks for watching and for the question. I suspended my U.S. number a week after landing in Bahrain to give me some time to buy a local SIM. At the time, I had T-Mobile, which offers international data, although, painfully slow. I know other plans like Google have very good international plans, but I’d recommend suspending the line and purchasing a local SIM as it’s much more economical and faster service. Only issue with that is every time you travel outside of Bahrain, you’ll have to buy a local SIM in that respective country. Bahrain airport does offer free WiFi for WhatsApp use or iMessage or FaceTime. Hopefully, that answered your question. Let me know if I can help with any other q’s. Safe travels!

I don’t know if any particular cycling tracks, as Bahrain isn’t the most pedestrian friendly. However, you can totally bike around Amwaj on the road and just stay off to the side. Traffic isn’t too bad on the islands, so it could be done safely. There are a few walking paths around small ponds on the island where people go walking or jogging but not sure if it would be that enjoyable to bike.
Bahraini Viewer here. Firstly thanks Sade for the informative video and for being very respectful. I'm glad you were treated kindly in Bahrain. Your video is great and very helpful for expats who's coming from the US or EU to live in Bahrain. Just few things to point out: 1) Yes, the tension isn't really about the Islamic sector per say, its more political as people marry between sects and have no problem. So it's very political. 2) This is the first time to even hear or know about these brunches LOL 3) Living cost in BH is VERY EXPENSIVE especially in the Seef/Adliya area. The amount that you had paid is very reasonable especially for a fully furnished apartment. 4) Expats from the US and EU are paid double if not triple the salary of a Bahraini. Which averages as low as 500 -600BD if not less. Expats from third countries (Sadly) get way less and are forced to work overtime (60-200) with no (to little) compensation. That's why the the rate of unemployment for Bahrainis is very high as employers want to get cheap expat labors who will work extra hours as most are scared to even speak! Some don't even get paid for months!! 5) Men in Bahrain do stare a lot no matter what you are wearing. You can wear a full abaya and get stared at aggressively. It makes any woman uncomfortable. 6) As for the black hair products. There are lots of insta stores selling curly hair friendly products such as shea moisture, Cantu, etc. It's a fairly new market but it's growing. Prices are a bit more expensive that getting them in the US but with the amazon shipping prices to BH, I'd rather pay extra few dinars.

Honestly, an entire docu-series could be done on these discussions 😆 I chose not to discuss it with much depth bc I didn’t feel my comments would do the immigrant experience service, especially from the perspective of a privileged expat. Your last point about the black hair care products is fantastic news and great feedback for other foreigners potentially moving to Bahrain. Thank you so much for sharing! Honestly I feel most of the men who stare are Saudis, when my friends and I are out and we have Saudi friends with us, we kind of get annoyed when they start staring at women so much, the Bahraini's I'm with usually don't stare. But I'm sorry that you experience that!

Hi Jai Law! Thanks for watching and for the question! WiFi speed and service is great if you intend of purchasing local service. Are you associated with the US military by chance? If so, you can purchase a router/monthly service on base. If not, there’s local providers, like Zain, that also offer good service. Overall, I had no interest issues while in the host country with local service. If you intend on using your US service, like Verizon or T-Mobile, I found the international companies speed slow. I def recommend getting a local service and paying for a VPN service to protect your data, such as Nord VPN. Let me know if that answered your question or if I can help with anything else. :)

My husband and I don’t have children, so we’re clueless in this area. 😅 However, I do know that there are several international schools, as there are many expats living there. For example, the Americans have an international k-12 school but it’s very costly out of pocket ($30k-$40k USD per year roughly). For those traveling under the umbrella of their employer, school is usually covered as a job benefit. I grew up in Bahrain I landed on the 17th of August 1970 aged 10 my dad worked on the oil rigs and I married a Bahraini and we had 2 children, I am now living back in the U.K. and now in my 60s I look back and see how Bahrain has changed over the years.

Hello 👋 What I can tell you is that I felt safe during my time living there; however, no place is exempt from bad people doing bad things, unfortunately. Of course, I’ve heard stories of mistreatment of immigrants, especially women. I’ve spoken to migrant workers in Bahrain who’ve had their passports taken once they arrive, not being paid for months, forced to work every day and to live in terrible, crowded conditions with other workers; women working as caregivers or cleaning staff, raped or molested by their employers. There’s a likelihood for people who are vulnerable or in precarious situations to be taken advantaged of. That goes for any country around the world, including my own country, the US. I loved my time in Bahrain. It’s a wonderful place to live; however, I fully acknowledge that, as an American expat, my experience was quite different and privileged from persons coming from other developing countries. It’s horrible because every human life is precious but, regrettably, that is the reality. So, please be careful and protect yourself always no matter where you go. No amount of money worth is worth your life or dignity. 🙏🏽

Hi, there! Thanks for watching and for your kind feedback! 🙏🏽😊 You’ll find that Bahrain is more progressive than Saudi, so the answer is no issues at all. I’d see young couples out enjoying their evening at cafes or the movies. Women do dress more conservatively and you won’t really see people showing PDA but for the most part, people mind their business like they would in any other place. As long as you don’t plan on having a baby while unmarried, visiting your bf should be no problem hehe! You’ll love Bahrain. It’s chill and super safe. They have incredible restaurants, a few bars/night clubs, and lots of malls for shopping. More foreigners live there than local people, so it’s quite diverse. Most people speak English. It’s great and you’ll have an amazing time. ☺️🙌🏽

Oh i am British I lived in beautiful Bahrain for over 20 years its amazing safe and chilled, You can dress what you want at the beach or at the club but be a little conservative during the daytime as they take pride in cleanliness and style.

To answer your question, Bahrain’s population is mostly that of immigrants from all over the world, so in that sense, I’d say it’s probably not too difficult to find a job there. However, I cannot speak to the difficulties of the visa process in doing so because my husband was stationed there through the US military. In this regard, I probably not the most informed person on the subject.

That is a great question that unfortunately I’m unable to give an answer to. If I sent or received mail, it was via the American Navy Base, which works the same as the American postal service. Therefore, I wasn’t charged any import fees or duty. Regarding Amazon shipments on the local economy, unfortunately, I am unsure - sorry!

As a matter of fact, when you venture out, you’ll mostly see families doing activities together, grabbing ice cream, or having dinner, etc. Bahrain is a small island, however, so depending on your duration living there, you may run out of things to keep the kids entertained hehe! There’s an indoor water park and arcade at the City Center Mall, camel feeding (although I wouldn’t recommend this if you have sensitivities to engaged and chain animals, which I tend to 😔), there are tons of water sports (although not many public beaches; I’d recommend buying a hotel day pass for access to the private pool and beach). Lastly, often, there will be themed markets and festivals (food festivals, etc.) Once you run out of things to do, thankfully, it’s affordable to fly to Europe and Asia from Bahrain. 😄 Safe travels to you and your family! Hope this is helpful. ☺️ feel free to ask away any other questions you may have.
Excellent video! Abu Dhabi has the same hotel brunch culture and it’s indeterminate if the goal is to cater to the expats, a tourist trap, or legitimately part of Arabic culture.

Hello, Traasia. Thanks for watching and for the question. I suspended my U.S. number a week after landing in Bahrain to give me some time to buy a local SIM. At the time, I had T-Mobile, which offers international data, although, painfully slow. I know other plans like Google have very good international plans, but I’d recommend suspending the line and purchasing a local SIM as it’s much more economical and faster service. Only issue with that is every time you travel outside of Bahrain, you’ll have to buy a local SIM in that respective country. Bahrain airport does offer free WiFi for WhatsApp use or iMessage or FaceTime. Hopefully, that answered your question. Let me know if I can help with any other q’s. Safe travels!

I don’t know if any particular cycling tracks, as Bahrain isn’t the most pedestrian friendly. However, you can totally bike around Amwaj on the road and just stay off to the side. Traffic isn’t too bad on the islands, so it could be done safely. There are a few walking paths around small ponds on the island where people go walking or jogging but not sure if it would be that enjoyable to bike.

Bahraini Viewer here. Firstly thanks Sade for the informative video and for being very respectful. I'm glad you were treated kindly in Bahrain. Your video is great and very helpful for expats who's coming from the US or EU to live in Bahrain. Just few things to point out:
1) Yes, the tension isn't really about the Islamic sector per say, its more political as people marry between sects and have no problem. So it's very political.
2) This is the first time to even hear or know about these brunches LOL
3) Living cost in BH is VERY EXPENSIVE especially in the Seef/Adliya area. The amount that you had paid is very reasonable especially for a fully furnished apartment.
4) Expats from the US and EU are paid double if not triple the salary of a Bahraini. Which averages as low as 500 -600BD if not less. Expats from third countries (Sadly) get way less and are forced to work overtime (60-200) with no (to little) compensation. That's why the the rate of unemployment for Bahrainis is very high as employers want to get cheap expat labors who will work extra hours as most are scared to even speak! Some don't even get paid for months!!
5) Men in Bahrain do stare a lot no matter what you are wearing. You can wear a full abaya and get stared at aggressively. It makes any woman uncomfortable.
6) As for the black hair products. There are lots of insta stores selling curly hair friendly products such as shea moisture, Cantu, etc. It's a fairly new market but it's growing. Prices are a bit more expensive that getting them in the US but with the amazon shipping prices to BH, I'd rather pay extra few dinars.

Regarding immigrant workers, I’m aware and absolutely have opinions on how they’re largely treated and how it adversely affects local Bahraini’s in need of well paid jobs and benefits. Honestly, an entire docu-series could be done on these discussions 😆 I chose not to discuss it with much depth bc I didn’t feel my comments would do the immigrant experience service, especially from the perspective of a privileged expat.

Honestly I feel most of the men who stare are Saudis, when my friends and I are out and we have Saudi friends with us, we kind of get annoyed when they start staring at women so much, the Bahraini's I'm with usually don't stare. But I'm sorry that you experience that!

Hi Jai Law! Thanks for watching and for the question! WiFi speed and service is great if you intend of purchasing local service. Are you associated with the US military by chance? If so, you can purchase a router/monthly service on base. If not, there’s local providers, like Zain, that also offer good service. Overall, I had no interest issues while in the host country with local service. If you intend on using your US service, like Verizon or T-Mobile, I found the international companies speed slow. I def recommend getting a local service and paying for a VPN service to protect your data, such as Nord VPN. Let me know if that answered your question or if I can help with anything else. :)

My husband and I don’t have children, so we’re clueless in this area. 😅 However, I do know that there are several international schools, as there are many expats living there. For example, the Americans have an international k-12 school but it’s very costly out of pocket ($30k-$40k USD per year roughly). For those traveling under the umbrella of their employer, school is usually covered as a job benefit. I’m sorry I’m unable to give you a better and more detailed answer. 😩 Best of luck with your travels and stay safe!! 🙏🏽

Well, as I’m sure you’re aware, each country has different requirements, so I highly recommend visiting either your respective Secretary or Ministry of State’s website or the Bahraini Ministry of State/Foreign Affairs’ site for more info; however, if you’re American, you can obtain an e-visa from the Bahraini govt website or obtain a 2-week tourist visa upon arrival. So, in fact, there are more males than there are females but that aside, just sharing my experience and how I felt. So I ask a few of my friends if they knew of any churches, and this is what they mentioned: National Evangelical Church; Filipino Congregation; Good News Church; St. Christopher’s Anglican Church; Good Shepard Church; Philadelphia; Father’s House; Word of Life International; Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church; Awali Catholic Church; Church of Christ; 7th Day Adventist; Bible Army International Gospel; St Mary’s Orthodox; Latter Day Saints; and St. Peter’s Jacobite. It’s my understanding that there could also be lots more. Hope these help to start.

Oh my as a Bahraini I absolutely loved watching this video Sadé!! Mostly because of the amount of respect you showed towards Bahrain and its locals. The video really allowed me to see through the eyes of an expat in Bh which I found very interesting. Like honestly thank you for making this video!! You should definitely come visit Bahrain this year you’ll even get to experience the new airport😁 There are tons of new places where you’ll think that this isn’t even Bahrain. Go paddling in Bahrain Bay until the sunset, the view is spectacular 😩
Coco’s is really one of the best restaurants and I totally agree with you.
You should definitely go to Cafe Lilou!! (better than Coco’s)
