  • In this episode we'll install the mainspring into the barrel using a Webster Mainspring Winder. Then we'll make a tool to check the fit of the mainspring to the barrel.

Hi Bob nice share, that is some really thick and wide material used on that mainspring, say larger then anything we have ever come across not being clock guys. Knowing Peter and Max reading their comments below, they share these same thoughts of letting go of its strength, neat to share in slow motion comes to mind, not so much good for a man needing this to go to work like you are doing. What a really well made tool we love her so nice and built with care, thank you, Lance & Patrick.

Hi guys...there is some power in that spring...it just barely fit my sleeve...I had to sacrifice a good camera angle to be sure all went well...good thing the spring is in a barrel...I hand made the barrel hook and the arbor hook so if it let's go I have no one else to blame...thanks for stopping by...bob

You never cease to amaze me Bob. Well done. As a kid I was always fascinated with clock repair tools. Never saw an opportunity to get into it. But, I do admire the skills.
    Wish you lived close. :-)

Thanks Al...too bad we are so far apart the pictures of your shop are really interesting...next video is finishing off the mainspring barrel but the one after that is the fusee...that's when things get interesting and I'll show you a shop made adjusting rod which is really old school...thanks for stopping by...bob

Hey Bob. Great video. You had me on the edge of my seat as you wound and unwound that spring. Looks like it could bite you pretty good if it got away from you. The winding tool looks like a definite must. Thanks for sharing. We are powerless after the storms yesterday and loads of down trees. Hope they get it back on soon. :-)

Hi Joe...sorry to hear of your storms...we had one go through in August and it knocked down seven trees on my property...6 big red oaks so a friend will burn his fireplace all next winter for free...just printed new handles for my hand held jacobs chucks...came out great...I'll be using them for holding a 5 sided broach and a finishing broach soon...making handles for jewelers files as well...thanks for stopping by...bob

That is really nice work and explanations. I enjoy the style. Myself I made a functional replica of the Antikythera Mechanism, and am more into clockmaking now. I am learning a lot from you, thanks! Markos

G’day Bob love the detailed work you’re doing there, looks good. I must say that mainspring looks dangerous when loaded, you could get seriously hurt if you don’t take care, it reminds me of loading a lawnmower recoil winder spring, they can bite.
Seeing The die filer, such a handy tool but it always brings to mind the argument around dragging the file on the back stroke (I know you were filing brass) you can’t but drag the file on the back stroke. Nice work, cheers. Peter

Mornin' Peter...mainsprings can be a bit, but truthfully I always keep my eye on the winder handle...especially when letting down a spring...that handle can bite ya....I too remember lawn mower recoil springs...but I'd guess I've fixed more outboard motor recoil springs...funny you should mention the die filer...it does contradict popular thought on filing technique...I've often thought about the paradox...Cheers...bob

Nice . I bet the springs are capable of doing some damage if they let go ! Cheers .

Mornin' Max....good thing that spring is in a barrel...I had a clock some time ago where the arbor hook let go and the spring was in a barrel...but I had to break down the movement 5-6 times to find all the little problems caused...it had chime and strike as well as time...and I needed magnification to track down everything...thanks for stopping by Max...cheers...bob
