I have a GPD Win4 (the 6800U model) and I couldn't be happier with it. It solves all the issues with the Ally in terms of usability when compared to the Deck (which I also own but haven't used much since getting the Win 4) and it delivers the bulk of the features. If and when we see the next step up in performance I would certainly consider the same form factor as my first priority.
Great comparison between the two devices and also very informative. I own both if these devices. Asus Rog Ally is ideal when your using it at home.Gpd Win 4 on the other hand is great when your own the go with its compact size.
My SD reader also failed. No SD cards were damaged but they were only recognized intermittently. I picked up my unit on launch and updated bios/drivers/etc anytime they became available. The SD reader failed around 8/19/23. Currently it is with Asus for repair.
I don't understand why Asus sandwiched the SD reader between hot VRMs and heatsinks 😓. Bad design product decision. Therefore, I prefer to buy onexfly.
u never run your ally above 85c ? dude that controller max temperature operation it's 70c so no wonder that he died , i didn't and don't want to use a sd card , have plenty of storage remain from 2tb so i don't care, the 6800u might perform the same for now but do this next year and see the difference
I know this may be a minor part of the video, but honestly I have a lot of respect to see someone actually boycotting something they stand against. I really hope, something changes about ROG QA, I really don't know how stuff like the SD Card reader failing and killing cards didn't get caught in their product testing. Same issue with the Asus ROG motherboards ruining the 7000 series amd chips. I don't know whats happening with them right now. If nothing happens we just get shit quality products, before they used to be great. You go to places like the rogally subreddit and they all just say just dont use the SDcard reader and buy a 2tb drives, or they don't use the sd card so it doesnt matter. Thats not the point, GPD for example makes nice devices but support isn't as good, so youd go for the ROG ally but then you find the same issue with a product flaw and bad support. Other things both the Win 4 and Ally have huge deadzones, they also cannot be modified, I'm guessing both are using the same joystick? Both GPD and ROG are saying theyre working on drivers to fix these issues with deadzones but how can I believe either of them? Theyre the same ALPS sticks that drift, so I'm wondering if for both they intentionally increased the deadzones because those sticks are both flimsy and probably drift a ton. These are just some of the problems I saw with both handhelds and why I'm simply waiting for a good one to come out. Waiting to see the Legion device, as they make really high quality gaming laptops like asus. The pictures so far look interesting, like how did they design the controller that way without causing accidental presses? Also it comes with a 1600 resolution screen, which for the Z1 can it even make use of it? Of course for portability most people on handhelds are either going to resolutions 720, 800, 900 so I guess it doesn't really matter. Future problems with the newer handhelds coming on the market, are AMD drivers, GPD is releasing devices with 7640u and 7840u chips in them and AMD still doesn't have drivers out for them after theyve been on the market for so long. Thats ridiculous how products are basically beind sold with no driver support and running worse than last year's chipsets. These are basically all my thoughts on handheld gaming currently, I'm simply waiting for a good device to come and replace my steam deck. I'm a very happy steam deck user, but man the screen is a letdown and its just huge and bulky. Theres that new 1080p mod display but I dont think its worth it since most games we'll have to downplay the resolution anyways and the color increase doesn't sound worth it... I hope the Lenovo Legion Device ends up being designed properly and comes with VRR, those buttons on the side of the controller grips look like theyll cause issues, but I'm sure theyll have thought it through so its just a waiting game at this point.
I feel you with all your concerns on the state of handheld PCs in general. I'm excited to see where this device category goes in the future because it has a lot of potential. It's technically still early days for PC handhelds, but that's no excuse. I'm looking forward to the legion as well 👍🏽
Very well said I was shocked to find out asus had similar dead zone issues that were software limited on the win 4. There still is no fix. The Lenovo legion has a switch to turn on those back buttons depending on whether or not you are in mouse mode so I think you can simply switch them off.
