@lovetobe6118 We did. We were stranded. A friend and I were doing a two day trip and he and I had never heard of the deeply immoral way that Extended Stay America hotels are run. He booked one, and we drove 10 hours to stay. By the time we arrived, we were late for our check-in and despite our call to the desk, we were refused the room we had paid for. They wouldn't give us our money back, they wouldn't allow us into the building and they refused to let us stay inside the lobby. So, we did the only thing we could and slept in the car. We took t-shirts out of our bags and rolled them into the windows and laid a sunshade across the front and our suitcases in the back. But the man who was staring at me yanked the shirt out of the window. Tore it into bits, trying to get it unstuck from the window. I never made the mistake again of letting someone book a hotel for me, and I sent SEVERAL formal complaints about it to their head office. I retell the story frequently, hopefully to warn people about the danger of possibly being stranded like we were or to bring as much negative attention to that company as possible. Extended Stay America also imprisons their low-income residents with high exit fees, cleaning fees and other insidious fees, while also leaving enough loose language in their hotel agreements to allow them to kick residents out with less than 24 hours notice or to separate people from their belongings while they are away at work. It's a horrible thing to not only prey on those with few prospects with inviting, low rates, only to then slam them left and right with fees and then throw them out of the only place they can stay and without allowing them their own possessions. I fully believe if I had been a lone woman that night, that man my have tried to break the window to get at me in the car. That would have been ESA's fault, for denying us a room we had already paid in full for. An EVIL company. To hell with them all.
@@lovetobe6118yes I recently saw a video and the woman had made window coverings but not just for privacy but for warmth. I stayed in my Honda Accord 2 times for over a yr each back in 2013 n 2015 before all these helpful videos. I could never sleep in a sleeping bag as I need to move too often n too difficult. Also incredibly difficult if you're older n have to get up in middle of night once or twice to pee. I'm a female in late 50's now n this is a common thing for most people over 50. I'm lucky I was only in my mid 40's then. Big difference for sure. Wool hat n wool gloves aren't cheap but definitely worth it. If I had the money I'd have gotten wool blanket or at least wool throw blanket but too expensive. Regular blankets require several and it can get really bulky n also have to store all that in your car all day. Those toe warmer n hand warmer things are fantastic but there too expensive to do every night so get a few n use for coldest nights. The one thing I would suggest for anyone who can that I never got on routine with was to sleep during day in a safe parking lot even if just 4-6 hrs n maybe somewhere else a nap of an hr or two. Then find something to do until as late as possible that's indoors like gym or movies or even a bar if you had to but be careful of that. So maybe only in your car from 12-5 and watch videos, read, eat, etc. You can at least turn the heat on once in awhile. It's easier to sleep during the day cause it's warmer with the sun coming in the windows. Also tint your windows if you can to the legal limit. Obviously everyone can't afford to do this n neither could I at the time.
I'm definitely going to get a heated sleeping bag. I've been living like this for 2 years now, I'm trying to get a van so I can have more room but this old car has been a life saver! (Yes I have a full time job I choose to live like this to save money)....
I'm currently in the same situation as well. I lived in a 99 Honda CRV when I first started two years ago and now I upgraded to a 05 Honda Odyssey van. Best upgrade I've ever done so far.
Idk if anyone will see this, but a weighted blanket can be your best friend in the cold! The 8-12 pounds are worth it, the weight traps your body heat down against you. I was cozy in mid 40s (in a tent) with a normal sleeping bag, a fuzzy blanket, and my weighted blanket on top :))
My time in the army when it was below freezing I slept on the cold forest floor with nothing but a single sleeping bag and the clothes I was already wearing for the past couple weeks to keep me warm while freezing rain poured all night so I had to be specifically positioned on an incline so I didn't accidentally drown while trying to sleep and cuddled my weapon to make sure it didn't get damaged or lost in the pitch black as I didn't have a light source.
I slept with a regular sleeping bag in my car overnight with 12 degree weather and it was no problem. I wore a knit hat and regular clothes with a light jacket. I heated my car nice and warm with the heater then crawled into the sleeping bag, and went to sleep. No issues at all. Woke the next morning and was warm as can be. Was not even aware it was that cold until I got out of the sleeping bag.
If you keep your car’s heater on, you should be fine. That’s a no brainer. Turn of the engine and the heater and you will set yourself up for frostbite in weather like that.
some people sleep in their cars for fun!! i do it when i travel from kansas to el paso tx in the winter and don't have to worry about paying for a hotel !!! it's nice and comfy !!!

Gotta say as a former boondocker and "homeless" car survivor for two winters that you absolutely adapt to the 20f degree night's within a week or two. I literally slept most nights with my shoes off with decent socks and two cotton blankets like a baby. The summers were the worst, and a thunderstorm was like a blessing from heaven for deep sleep. We're animals, and if you accept that you can survive much more than these glampers on RUclips. Uncomfortable doesn't mean you're dying.
@my-carlifea challenge? Ur basically insulting real homeless people that have no other options and are doing this because they HAVE TO not because they want to

They could have an addicted, criminal, and/or intolerable parent. You seem quite comfortable making assumptions and forming opinions about situations and people you know nothing about. I'd fix that before it becomes a lifelong bad habit.
When I was homeless, I had to run my car for hours to fill the space with as much of the hottest air it could blow out, put on at least two pairs of everything, and then cocoon myself completely inside two thick blankets. It's all I had, and it wasn't enough. Barely slept an hour at a time. Good on ya for having better gear.
When I would go on trips I used to keep car running when slept, but that was when didn't have cold weather gear and sleep setup and had normal gas engine only. I use Prius now and have proper sleep setup, so when I was completely living in my car I could keep it off in 5F. I tried it on a few times but it's extremely annoying when engine turns on and off, even if uses less gas.
After 20yrs living as a vagabond in the states(40 of them) this is what i learned being under the stars, tent and vehicle: Emergency blankets under all blankets reflect the cold air away from you. In cold damp climates. Cut the blanket into strips. Put in pockets or under clothing or boot covers just ensure there is fabric between the material and skin. So theres no condensation. Line the inside of car doors by removing the paneling. Make sure to crack a window to allow air flow.
Good idea. I wish i liked sleeping bags. I keep flanel sheets, my favoritest quilt and blanket and wool blankets for the coldest nights. But for people without space for a buddy heater thats a great option.
Here's a cheap way of doing this as well. When I was sleeping in my car and the temperature dropped to "Holy shit that's cold" levels I started using the l cheap emergency blankets, the shinny ones. I would basically put the blankets against all surface area of the inside of my car as like a barrier. Put a few of those up inside your vehicle. Just a heads up, of done correctly, it can raise the inside temperature of your car dramatically. They reflect body heat, so if you prevent the heat from leaving the car, it stays. Also, you might have to run your car and use the defrost to suck out possible condensation build up and you can run your heater for a minute to also build up the heat inside. Stay safe 👍
I was homeless years ago and slept in my vw passat- the best thing is you are safe from the elements wind, rain, frostbite! Hope you are ok x Any car any condition with a big boot is better than sleeping outside even if it only costs you a few 100 bucks off ebay
I spent the last two winters living in my vehicle in Kenai ,Alaska. Didn’t even know about a heated sleeping bag. Some nights it had gotten to -25 to -35 below. I dressed accordingly.
I have a heated blanket like that with the battery pack and it's saved me on some cold camping trips to Michigan's U.P. it's still cold at night up there even in the summer especially on lake Superior.... Thanks for the info on the sleeping bag 😁😍💞
been sleepin in -15 under just sleeping bag yes was cold af but the hotter it gets then that the better u ccan manage ud be suprised how well temperature stays within the bag when u pull it over ur head
Was in the military freezing out in the field. Dudes told me to get naked, taking off the clothes made me warmer no kidding. I think it was a certain type of sleeping bag. I thought they was playing. But sure enough it allowed your body temperature to keep you warmer. Was super cold with clothes on too
Wish i had that this the last couple years. It gets really cold here at night. Im not excited for this winter but i definitely cant afford this. By time i pay my bills im lucky to afford Ramen noodles. Its impossible to live independently in a house these days if you dont make $35 / hour or more.
Really depends on where you live. I have a buddy making almost $37/hr who cried broke to me a few days ago. Really left me feeling discouraged tbh cause we’re in the same field and he’s near the top of our pay scale while I’m still at entry-level. But seriously, who the actual f**k can justify spending $3k on renting a 2br shack when we barely crack $4k after taxes (not to mention we have Union fees totaling thousands each yr)
I have 2 extra wide 4 season bags and a blanket all I do is layer them. Granted that's me winter camping 😅 I hope you stay safe and warm your set up is brilliant.
That sleeping bag looks really nice. With the negative temperatures happening right now you should test it out in those conditions. I would do it say at home or at a motel just to be safe though. Considering we had one night go to -18°F here in Idaho. I think we lost power at least 3 times in below freezing conditions for hours! And being from Hawaii I just can't deal. So it would be a good investment for us. 😊
So I just did 5F in Cincinnati OH area, think my setup was just at limit of comfort there. 10F was still toasty. I had double stack memory foam on top of backpacking airpad (not sure if does anything) with I think quilt and sheets on top of that. I was inside lightweight fleece sleeping bag that was inside heavy duty sleeping back (rated 26F comfort, 16F limit when by itself) with blanket on top of that. These heated things seem 🔥🔥🔥 if my setup didn't work fine at 5F I would look at getting, maybe if I expect to be in my car for colder temperatures.
I have battery powered socks, Heating blankets, Housecoat and throws… They are excellent even for home use where I don’t have to run my house heat on a higher setting. I buy extra Battery packs so I always have some charging…
Just a little tip you can burn a candle inside the car and it will get toasty warm fast! Of course you want to crack a window for air and obviously don't leave it burning while sleeping.
The title said below freezing, it's been -40c here and my car didn't start. So I was curious how someone could make it through that kind of night, till I forgot most places aint that cold.
Been there, done that. But only because the state of Michigan demanded me to! Oh and don't ask the government for any help, they prefer to set you up with petty, selfish caseworkers.
I have a -15°F sleeping bag and a thermal sleeping mat and a tent with a small wood stove in it. I go camping in January in Maine and it works fine. The key is not going to bed cold or hungry. I usually eat a snack and do some jumping jacks before climbing into bed.

I think it’s a weird rite of passage. You learn a lot about yourself and the world when you have to survive like this. I did it because I worked 3 jobs and didn’t see a point in renting a place to barely sleep and shower. Showered at work and made friends with people at 24 hour diners who would keep an eye on me. Good luck to you! It gets better!
Blessings
Release any shame Darling. Your situation is a matter of a positive mindset shift. There’s a whole community of VanLifers who CHOOSE to live rent free on purpose. We get to use our resources to create unique & valuable experiences rather than pay to buy into the “American dream” (white picket fence / capitalist hamster wheel bah blah blah)
Be proud. Not why youre there but the fact you can deal with it. That takes strenght determination and ingenuity.
Stay safe❤
Dude you’re smart enough to know all this , don’t know your circumstances but praying you get a job to support yourself & rent at least a room. Praying the best for you.
WHY would he waste money on rent? He's saving for a mortgage, that's much smarter than paying rent
In the city of Los Angeles, they have "safe sleep" parking lot programs and you get a case manager to help find you more permanent housing for low or no income such as General Relief etc.
Wow, that's awesome
Good idea. I hope you normally have all your windows covered too. I'm staying in my car. Been 3 months. I have 8 more days til I move into a place. I've always had my windows covered. Helps with keeping heat in as well. Heated sleeping bag is a great idea.

Hows the new place? Blessings.

The formula for gas is as follows
I get 13 to the gallon, so 13x 950 mi=...then you multiply that with current gas price...it's about 250 one way just in gas.
I'm a truck driver for many years ..I got this. But my truck mechanically is not sound. New tires heater works ,250 k on a 25 yr old vehicle.....kinda worried.
Any advice and if I could keep in contact with you guys..maybe just to talk from time to time. Then at least if something happens..you or at least someone would know my general area for the police or search and rescue..if I got into trouble ,I had to maybe send help.. hopefully not for the recover of my body...

From experience, newspapers are really good insulation. Have a few to put under the sleeping bag.
Cardboard too
Real insulation costs a lot aint no way you make it with trash? What ground? Lowest temp? Wet or dry ground? How often to you change it? How many layers?

When I lived in my Jeep in SoCA last year, people knew it bec all my windows were 100% covered.
I left the front side windows uncovered. I put up a black curtain between the front & back seat, hanging above my hips when I sat or slept. I put thick foam down in the passenger floorboard, I perfectly reclined everso against the center seats, and with all my pillows it was a perfect place, bec I was so low that people didn't realize I was inside..day or night. My blanket was black, so my legs were hidden. I was able to park in any Rich neighborhood, so no nightly hunt for a place to park. I was never harassed again or constantly listen to every car that parked near by.
~Cooking and cleanup took 2hrs plus a Lots of space, so I did OMAD, a new restaurant everyday!
~Living in a Apt now has been nice but a huge part of me wants to travel...but with Solar/AC/Heat.
This is exactly what I did for 6 years! I also only parked in rich neighborhoods and was never bothered. I also ate out at a restaurant once a day. Only rarely I ate some fruit for a snack.
Omgggg a heated sleeping bag. I wish I knew about that all those cold winters in my car. Subscribed
I’m glad to see you had head cover, because that’s where all your body heat escapes.
Get wool blankets and 100% wool jumpers. Wool is one of the best insulators for clothing. Also retains 80% of its heat value when wet
Leather is better ,in freezing temperatures I always wear a leather jacket, not goretex, wool or down, nothing insulates like genuine leather
The only time I ever slept in a car, I had a nightmare someone broke in, only to wake up to some guy peering in my window! I could never do it again. You guys stay safe!
Hence why it's best to cover said windows.
I wish I would have known about this when I was struggling sleeping in my car thank you for sharing 🙌🙏💯
Finally a realistic video without a $1000 powerstation that only the lucky can afford.

Stay safe brother. Look after yourself 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️

I spent 3 winters in my car when I was homeless. Almost died from hypothermia in front of my mom's house and no one knew. I didn't have blankets.

@@smellojello8214There is probably a valid reason that she won't let him stay with her. Don't be so quick to call his Mom a bad person. Usually when family doesn't want you around, it is because of some personal issues involving addiction, criminality, or intolerable behavior.

irm: _"Usually when family doesn't want you around, it is because of some personal issues involving addiction, criminality, or intolerable behavior."_
And there's nothing in the post to suggest that these issues are the person's who lives in the car. They could have an addicted, criminal, and/or intolerable parent.

After 20yrs living as a vagabond in the states(40 of them) this is what i learned being under the stars, tent and vehicle:
Emergency blankets under all blankets reflect the cold air away from you.
In cold damp climates. Cut the blanket into strips. Put in pockets or under clothing or boot covers just ensure there is fabric between the material and skin.
So theres no condensation.
Line the inside of car doors by removing the paneling.
Make sure to crack a window to allow air flow.
I hope things get better for you bud 🙏
Good idea. I wish i liked sleeping bags. I keep flanel sheets, my favoritest quilt and blanket and wool blankets for the coldest nights. But for people without space for a buddy heater thats a great option.
I would recommend a weighted blanket those are super warm.
Pocket warmers they are cheap and they work
I just ordered 2 rechargeable ones off Amazon . I’m hoping it’ll help keep me warm
I have been homeless since 2008. Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏼
Weighted blankets are great for keeping warm
Stay safe 👍

Is it weird me first thought was: how can his seat lean back to a perfectly flat angle for sleeping.😂
But some seriously cool tricks. Good job man!
A trick for you. Most cars do it slide the seat forward and take off the head rest
Crumpled up newspaper stuffed between your base layer and the hoodies/sweaters also works.
Something else you can think about is refillable hand warmers from Zippo. I think the average 24 hours when you put a double shot of fuel.
I have battery powered socks, Heating blankets, Housecoat and throws… They are excellent even for home use where I don’t have to run my house heat on a higher setting. I buy extra Battery packs so I always have some charging…
Slept in -38 ,no problem ,did not run the car ,just a good winter sleeping bag and a heavy quilt ..easy !

A better link would be someplace you could learn about insulation, and how a well-insulated small interior holds heat extremely well. That way, instead of a baseless cynicism, you could become someone who's well-informed enough to form a legitimate opinion instead of just throwing shade on things you don't understand, and can't be bothered to learn about.
It's not as easy as being a baseless cynic, but the benefits are much, much better over time. Learn to think. Don't be ignorant.
