That's an awesome upgrade from reflectix. You could even carpet the interior side to help mute sound as well and just provide a less harsh internal recording environment too if you wanted.
instead of the ABS plastic panel that will set you back a few hundred for all the windows.. and carpeting can create mold under the fibers from condensation.. what about thin foam poster board? the foam doesn't have fibers that can trap moisture, comes in color black, easy to cut, can act as an insolation, and it's a lot cheaper. you could reuse campaign political signs and just recolor one side, to make this project as cheap as possible
Nice build! Random note for someone not wanting to fashion their own fan contraption: they make solar/battery powered window fans that hook over the top of the window and work really well. The hook width is usually enough to accommodate something like this as well, though certainly far bulkier. But if you're already doing this, might as well go all the way & do your own fan. If you do go that route, might as well add a couple of simple square hooks at the top of this to hang on that same window edge rather than relying on friction/gasket.
As a retired truck driver, your idea would come in very useful to fit into semi truck windows so that would be a great fit for your idea. I know if I were still driving, I'd buy it!

You are so funny XD The moment your hair flew away, I woke up the entire building with my laugh. I love your ideas and your designs. Totally my style and totally doable. Do you plan to mount a solar panel on your roof? I would be curious to know how you would do it.
I’ve experimented with some smaller panels and realized we usually camp where there are trees and only really pulled in power on the road. So it’d need to be a decent size panel to take advantage of the days the rig is actually in the sun which would limit space on the roof for extra gear. All that to say… yes I’d like to but not sure exactly what to do yet. 🙃
I've lived in cars for years, gotten great at fabricating all kinds of organization out of all kinds of eclectic objects, but I've never thought to use a plastic like that! This general method opens up all kinds of new ideas for me, thanks! Very cool design as well
I have always thought that the window area was wasted space when I'm car camping. This is absolutely brilliant! I'm not sure I could do it just like you did but it certainly gives me an idea or two. I could definitely see myself making some pockets.

Matt, have you ever thought about inventing/ designing/ building/ installing turnable front seats in your passenger car? Turnable seats are available for RVs, but not for cars as you may know. The turning mechanism needs to be slightly more sophisticated than that for a RV. But yeah, that would be the icing on the cake of a passenger camping car.
@@MattTheDesigner Welding steel is not a challenge. Welding machines for that purpose are relatively cheap. The challenge is how to get the chair within that confined area turned.
Amazon features swivel seat bracket units with a large center pivot hole for seat wiring starting at $160. A bracket would need to be welded up to fit the individual vehicle. My van has a heat vent that I would need to clear under my seat for its continued use. I am toying with the idea of a junk yard seat pedestal and removing a center strip and modifying the pedestal to accept the swivel unit. Object here to install the swivel with no change in height or mounting. Early days for this project yet. ABS cement for plumbing would take the place of screws.
Thanks for your video. It inspired me to make a mod to my own window venting setup. I had made some window inserts from coroplast (corrugated plastic) with 5" fans (one intake, one exhaust on driver side and passenger side rear windows of my Pacifica, respectively), and using household dryer vent covers for rain protection. Worked fine, but they were hard to get in and out, took too much time getting in and out when/where mosquitos were bad, they required taping the outside where the inserts met the window to keep rain and bugs out, which meant getting out of the vehicle and letting more mosquitos in. Saw this video and decided to remake them using the ABS material you used. It has been a brilliant upgrade. No more taping needed, they go in much more quickly, I can install them from the inside and not have to go outside the van to do it. Your system is really clever, though, but I just didn't want to take the time do the kind of detailed work that your design requires. I did have a hard time believing that those tiny fans you use could power the kind of airflow needed to really keep the air exchange rate high enough for my tastes. This winter I'll try to get around to posting a video of my system in hopes that some people find it useful, or may inspire their own creation. Loving that ABS!
Brilliant? There is nothing about being stupid doing something inventive even if it doesn't come out right. The fact that it is a new idea it will eventually work out in being determined and work things out. Love the construction you made. Cheers.
Nice Matt, love the design. I'm going to give it a go, but just wondering how you have secured the panel to the window? Is it just a snug fit that stays put? Or did you use suction caps or something? Sorry if this was in the vid, I must have missed it haha enjoying the vids mate, as a fellow industrial designer your ideas provide great inspiration as they are very creative and functional 🙌
There is a rubber gasket the the window slides into. It sits inside of that on the CRV. Friction fit could work too depending on how your window works.
Just found your channel, I hope you keep making videos. Entertaining and really informative with great editing. I'd love to know what resources you found useful for making 3d models
Awesome design! If you don’t mind me asking, what size ABS sheet did you go with? Would it be a good option for the rear window too? Maybe that could be a future video idea if you’ve got the time!
Hey Mike. I used the 24x48 .06”. I’ll deal with that back window at some point for sure. The shelf I made makes it less of a priority because we don’t really need the back window to act as storage now.
@@artdeb86 honestly it might matter. You have to bend it a little to get it into place and it wedges in between the window and a rubber gasket that the window slides into. I’m not sure though. I’d try finding other sellers with a similar product.
I've been on YT long enough to remember when people made videos that weren't "watch me tell a story and do a thing" but, rather, were "here's how to do this thing; watch this video and *you'll* learn how to do it too". Every now and then I stumble on a new channel with the old ethos, and my hope for the species experiences a momentary uplift. Thank you for making content that informs and educates viewers, rather than the other option, which I think of as "TV 2.0", and largely pointless. Subbed.
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for and had no idea how... you solved all of the issues I've been concerned about in ONE awesome project that I think I can actually do! You earned a subscribe from me! BRAVO!!!
I use my truck for camping with my family. The truck topper is usually so full you cant see out the back so i made something like this for the rear windshield. Now the kids can organize all of their stuff in their own designated space.
A gentleman and a scholar! Think I’ll be ordering some abs plastic to play around with once I finish my current project for my subi’rv. I even have a broken mbp I can pilfer the fans from.
so your video was suggested via algorithm and I gotta say; I'm not in the market to make something like this but the scene of you and the little hat made me smile. I'm subbed for that alone. looking forward to watching more vids
This is only the second video of your that I have watched. You are a genius my friend. I'll be watching a lot more of your stuff. Thank you for such an awesome channel.
Cool DIY project. I'd sugets a closed cell foam layer to help with insulation. If you have one on either side of the vehicle, i'd suggest having the fans reversable so you can have the one on the shade side pulling air in and the sun side blowing air out for a cooling cross draft. Even if not switchable, orientating the fans so one sucks and one blows for crossflow is a good idea.
Fantastic. Your production level is amazing. Your ideas and design very impressive. I dont want a fan just now, but i will make these window covers now. Put fans in later. Peep out hole...pockets...fan.....brilliant
That's cool ! Now you just have to find a way to place a small heater in front of the fan, and it'll be gooood for winter ! Love the wind in the hair 😂

This is on point. I'm not even have a need for such a thing and I still watched it and even took some mental gymnastics to understand what you did, so kudos to you. I know I'd look stupid if I tried it, but in the future, if I ever need it, I will be stupid just for the sake of it.

I just found your channel! I'm still shaking my head and laughing!! BUT!! I do love your design! Right now I'm getting ready to watch more from you.. please keep your videos coming. You have great gifts and talents!
I can't stand those reflectixs for windows! This is brilliant. Mental note, remove fan from broken computer... I like the storage and the USB change, too. Even without storage, it is a great solution for the tiny useless windows at the back (SUV). I love your tutorials, they are fun and easy to stop and follow when making. (I'm glad you didn't edit out removing the clips, we need to see that so we don't leave it in! Keep those adjustments in!)
This is what RUclips did for me back 15 years ago. Don’t even remember what I was watching but landed on this and watched the whole thing. Completely random but still very Interesting lol.
FWIW, the four wires on the fan are for +v, GND, Sense, and Control. As you found out you can just connect power to the +and GND and get it to spin. The other wires are to control the speed anywhere between 0% and 100% depending on requirements (ie how hot the CPU is).
I’m surprised it took this long for someone to say that haha. I assumed it was something like that. Maybe I’ll update it and add a switch at some kind.
I like that all you had to do to connect the wires and give them structure was just by adding shrink covers... without the use of solder. I appreciate that. I don't like soldering. 💛✨️
you don't like soldering because nobody ever taught you how to do it properly, so you struggle with it. take a class at a maker space, and it'll open a whole new world of diy possibilities.
As someone with a semi-professional interest in electronics, I cringed so hard at the construction of the fan assembly. But man, I love every single thing about this! I love the attitude of "try stuff until it works" and smashing that together with some plastic and glue into this masterpiece. I'm subscribed to this channel now, can't wait to see more of your stuff. All I'd say is please, if you have even the tiniest interest in it, take a little time and learn more about the electronics stuff because with your attitude towards making stuff work, I'd really love to see what you came up with. Thank you!

You are very creative and detailed and funny. 😂🎉😊❤🙏. Maybe you should sell this type of project. 😊
Just found your channel, I hope you keep making videos. Entertaining and really informative with great editing. I'd love to know what resources you found useful for making 3d models
The channel called “TheSketchupEssentials” has been a huge help.
Man very well done
Awesome design! If you don’t mind me asking, what size ABS sheet did you go with? Would it be a good option for the rear window too? Maybe that could be a future video idea if you’ve got the time!
Hey Mike. I used the 24x48 .06”.
I’ll deal with that back window at some point for sure. The shelf I made makes it less of a priority because we don’t really need the back window to act as storage now.
@@MattTheDesigner Is it going to matter if the .06 24x48 isn't available and I go with the next thicker 24x48??
@@artdeb86 honestly it might matter. You have to bend it a little to get it into place and it wedges in between the window and a rubber gasket that the window slides into. I’m not sure though. I’d try finding other sellers with a similar product.
2 mins in and I subscribed and saved this to my RV folder.
Subbed.
👌🏼
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for and had no idea how... you solved all of the issues I've been concerned about in ONE awesome project that I think I can actually do! You earned a subscribe from me! BRAVO!!!
I feel if you kickstarter this it would go somewhere in bulk! This is awesome
Dude, your precision-minded builds are over the top! Woah! Mind blown
I use my truck for camping with my family. The truck topper is usually so full you cant see out the back so i made something like this for the rear windshield. Now the kids can organize all of their stuff in their own designated space.
Wow this is by far the best window cover solution I have seen !
Give credit. This got me laughing.... 🤣💨✨👍👏
I have no idea why I watch this kind of video, as I'll probably never go live in a van or such. However, I do find them interesting, and have for quite a few years now. You Matt, win this year's (so far) for being the first ever that I have seen use a sewing machine!
Great video and great idea!
This looks amazing. It looks like something people would buy.
This is on point. I'm not even have a need for such a thing and I still watched it and even took some mental gymnastics to understand what you did, so kudos to you. I know I'd look stupid if I tried it, but in the future, if I ever need it, I will be stupid just for the sake of it.
This is quite genius even if you’re not living in your vehicle. More pockets to hold stuff would be good!
your love of tiny screws is impressive
Super cool design and execution. Thanks!
I'm not going to lie. This was one of the most informative videos I've seen so far. Thank u for sharing this. I really appreciate 🙏 it.
As as an 4x4 enthusiast that camps in my 4runner........ This would be awesome to have.
Brilliant editing!!!! It took patience to film AND prepare the product!
lol I immediately went straight to the description of the video to see where i could buy these! But you made them yourself! Great job! I will definitely give it a try when i find the right car i want to put these in!
I just found your channel! I'm still shaking my head and laughing!! BUT!! I do love your design! Right now I'm getting ready to watch more from you.. please keep your videos coming. You have great gifts and talents!
Thanks blah!
Matt, the designer, got it going on. Whoot whoot😂
Watching from Virginia. About to add some upgrades to my vehicle and stumbled on your page. Love the content.
Welcome to the channel!
Excellent ideas and craftsmanship, man. 😃👍🏼
Why did you struggle with the lighter for the heat shrink tubing, when you used a heat gun in the scene before
The edit is not in the order things actually happened.
Wow, I’m impressed. So much work but good result.
hey Matt, what kind of caulk did you use?
All joking aside I love the video and I subscribe to your channel but no kidding I must’ve laughed 20 or 30 times
Link in the description. 🤭
I like that all you had to do to connect the wires and give them structure was just by adding shrink covers... without the use of solder. I appreciate that. I don't like soldering. 💛✨️
Thanks! It’s holding up so far.
you don't like soldering because nobody ever taught you how to do it properly, so you struggle with it. take a class at a maker space, and it'll open a whole new world of diy possibilities.
I loved this video! Such a great flow and your personality is authentic and fun.
Thank you!
Haha. I only know enough about electronics to know it was cringe. No fires so far! I’ll get better. Thanks for the kind words.
@@MattTheDesigner It's not just fire you need to watch out for. For all you know you're now running a 12 volt grounded fan ungrounded on the wrong voltage, and as soon as you touch the wrong bit of something you're going to become path to ground.
This was the video I needed. I have been working on my own prototype for something very similar and this gave me some more ideas and confirmed some of how I had already planned on executing it
