Been going back to this video for a while now and reliving one of the worst days of my life. I was in 1st grade when I went to this game. Die Hard ND fan, I knew all the players, stats, scores, etc. I sat right behind the ND bench in front of the Grant and Connaughton family. Notre Dame's 2014-2015 Basketball team (32-6 14-4) is the reason why I fell in love with the amazing game of basketball. Lest to say when the horn sounded and the score read 68-66 Kentucky, my 1st grade self bawled and cried and attempted to throw a water bottle on the floor but I was stopped. Im now a Freshmen in high school and this game is almost 8 years old. Unreal how fast time flies.
The only reason Notre dame lost was cuz they didnt have another big man tht body and tire out towns thts how Wisconsin beat them because they had two big guys to body towns and shut him down and when Wisconsin did kentucky didn't have answer
I disagree, Kentucky was the most overrated team ever, whom played in the weakest major conference that year and did not play anybody. They had two O.T games against unranked.opponents, the only two good teams they played until the tourney were Texas, and LS.U, If they survived Notre Dame imagine if they had to run every week through the ACC. Imagine Virginia, , Duke, N Carolina, Notre Dame, any of them.in the same week.
Out of all the upsets I've ever seen in the tournament, even though they lost, I've never been inspired by a team like I was by Notre Dame and Pat Connaughton in this game. Kentucky was way bigger and had much more firepower, but the grit that Notre Dame played with was amazing.
One might ask, how come Notre Dame despite playing four guards and one big nearly knock off Kentucky? 1. By spreading the floor with shooters and drivers, they made Kentucky’s big guys have to guard away from the basket which only Cauley-Stein was capable of. 2. Although Kentucky had 9 blocks, ND used their occasional lack of weak side discipline on challenged/blocked shots for put-backs. 3. Notre Dame’s speed in the backcourt and movement off the ball (specifically the side pick and roll) often lulled the Wildcats to sleep. 4. By only committing a few turnovers, ND made Kentucky play half-court basketball (not much running, dunking and layups in transition) which outside of Towns (who kept them in the game when down) posting up and occasional shots by the Harrison twins was limited.
saw a “forgotten college athletes” post on Twitter about Steve Vasturia and had to come back and watch this game. was a sophomore in high school at the time and I can still vividly recall the devastation at the end. now an ND alum myself 3y out from graduation… insane how time flies. don’t think we’ll ever witness an Irish squad like this again 😪
The thing that will always stick out was Baylor having that early lead and in one fell swoop, the roof caved in on them! That Kentucky 16-pt blitz was epic and ridiculous!
Man I think Kentucky that year went on 1 of the most dominant runs in NCAA basketball history, and towards the end they seemed a bit burned out on just playing basketball. Plus Poythress injury hurt them as well, but when this team first came into the year they were not only beating everyone they were smashing everyone by 30. They beat Kansas that year 72-40, and beat UCLA by 40 points, and when they were playing basketball at their best nobody could score on them. This team is probably the best defensive basketball team to ever step on a collegiate floor. Calipari went on 1 of the most dominant stretches by any coach in history, and won 38 games twice in 3 years. A lot of national championship teams don't win that many games. The perfect 40-0 season alot of us UK fans were hoping for that year was literally too good to be true.
They got alot of call vs irish. Auguste missed last 6 minutes of half. Also the 7 footer and 6'10 guys were outrebounded by a 6'4 irish pitcher from Boston.
ND did an excellent job using Kentucky’s over-reliance on their size and frontcourt defense against them, not just at the rim but also off the bounce. Most teams that year weren’t as skilled offensively to give their defense problems.
Thomas only playing half of first half hurt. The irish players grant most. All that was needed was to pass ball to middle. Grant took it to far. It was disappointing but they got had by Badgers who mentally spent themsevles allowing duke to win another title that they had a cupcake run to elite 8.
Fun Fact: Marv Albert was supposed to announce this game, but pulled out at the last minute due a family emergency; That's why Brian Anderson was the play-by-play announcer.
I believe Marv was actually ill with bronchitis and was unable to announce - if you listen to the second half of the Kentucky-West Virginia game 2 days prior you can hear his voice getting worse and worse as the game went on and he sounded quite sick by the end. He missed a couple of NBA games on TNT the next week too.
Its a shame ND had to play Kentucky here. I feel Notre Dame that year was probably the second or third best team in the country by the time they played Kentucky. Notre Dame was certainly deserving of a Final Four berth.
This game about gave me a heart attack. I'll also still never understand how so many fans tried to sell Andrew's drive at the end as a charge. I'm not naive. I know everyone wanted us to lose, but how can you even try to make that case rationally?
@Avi Hoffman yeah as a UK fan I can confidently say if they put you guys in any other region you guys not only make the final four and could've won it all. You guys owned Duke that year.
As a notre Dame fan at the time I wasn’t a fan of the call, but the more I watched it I know it was the right call. Had Jackson gotten set in a better position a second earlier it could’ve been a charge. But leaned the wrong way. Was a great game regardless.
He scored but was outrebounded by 6'4 white guy from Boston. Connington was drafted out of highschool in 3rd round. Offered 500k bonus. He was recruited by Irish to pitch but always wanted to play Basketball. He told baseball coach i am coming to pitch for Irish but i want to play bball. Problem was he turned done mlb bonus. He said well you can be a starter as freshman but i cant tell you you can play bball. He said i am going to tell Coach Brey about you but i am sure he knows you. He went as walkon and only was let on cause baseball coach agreed that he play until hoops over. He played sub last half fr.tear. Became 6th man then starter soph. Started jr. Oops of a year. But Grant was suspended last half of season cause grades. He had to go to summerschool not sure if student council would let him back. Connington was drafted by orioles with a 8 million contract with 2.or 3 bonus. He turned it down to play with grant unsured if he was able. This guy turned down 20 30 million to play his dream. Then he gets drafted in 2rd of Nba. Has been a solid sub. Won a slam dunk title. He has made 25 million in his carrerr. At least 15. In MLB he would be at 100 million.
Also watch Walton in 72? Game final vs Memphis 21 of 22. Only basket he missed was off. Goaltending. Touched the net after he dropped it in basket. You could not dunk. Had 13 rebounds 6 assists. That guy was the most fundemental player. If not for ankle injury he was a center who could pick you apart on high post with back to basket.
Cincinnati with one of the most historic choke jobs in NCAA tournament history! Mick Cronin and that club had Nevada by the noose and let go of their grip! They will never be able to live that one down! When your up 22 deep into the second half, there's no excuses! I've been watching the tournament since the early '80s and Cincinnati epically blowing it has few, if any, peers!
Watch first time since live. Brey should have gone zone here and there. He never leaves his man d. It might have cost him. Hearing Calipari at the end is reason i dont like him. He said we didnt play good. Notre dame seemed to control game. 99% of coaches first credit the other team. At least towns first thing he said was that irish were a good team. Well Badgers took care of that
Watch grainy video of 79 elite 8. Michigan State vs Notre dame. Magic johnson size was not seen ever as point guard. Greg Kelser was a beast for spartans. Irish just fell asleep on backside lobs. Irish were in final four year before had Tripucka. Woolridge. Hanslik was a 6'7 guy who played for denver for 8 or 9 years. Was a first team all defensive player for 5 6 years. He had too stay of johnson cause his ability to drive. Irish had 6 guys go to play in pros. Then in final 4. Indiana St. Played Depaul. Bird vsAguirre. Depaul blew the game at end by not getting ball ti Aguirre for chance to tie. Then bird vs magic in final. Also i think bird played in 16 or 8 against Arkansas with Sidney Moncrief. Another nba great who was 63 but played d on guy 67 68.
I am a Tar Heel fan and I was in Philadelphia in 2016 and saw the Notre Dame vs Wisconsin game live. Weird game. Wisconsin seemed in control but faltered late.
Towns was dominating and saved kentucky. Throw it in the post. Seems like them commentators were against uk lol saying notre dame was dominating inside smh
The Irish would’ve beaten any other team in the country that night. They deserved this game. Those last two possessions really killed Notre Dame. Then Kentucky ends up losing to Wisconsin anyway a couple days later
@@26michaeluk you mean the fouls that Auguste got in first half? He only played 10 minutes. Ended up playing less than 30 had 22 and 14. Cats 2 big men were outrebounded by a 6'5 white guy who turned down a 8 million dollar bonus to pitch for Baltimore. He wanted to play with grant who was suspended the year before. Then the guy ends uo playing with his hometown celtics. Was in slamdunk contest. The guy inproved his game every year for 8 years. Cats had 6 1rst round picks that next draft. @@26michaelukyes they had more talent than irish. They had a chance at end and all guys were to blame. Your cats had a better team but they lost to Wisconson? So a team with more size beat your guys.
It's available! That was Duke defense at its finest, holding the Zags to 1 point over the last 4 1/2 minutes! Overall, that 2015 run we had in the tournament collectively was Duke's best in their postseason history! Wisconsin's 63 the most against us! The shame of it (not that year at all) is we haven't had that level of consistency on defense in the tournament since then! It's why we haven't won a sixth title! 2015 was proof that defense wins championships! That team finished the job because every individual together bought in
@@tysondavis3332 sorry about that Tyson, it must not be available anymore on RUclips! It for sure was at one time not too long ago because I watched it

Before this game nobody thought Kentucky could be beat after this game that ND should've won this showed that Kentucky was gonna get beat ethier in the Final Four and National Championship
They're path was so similar to that of Vegas in 1991! Rarely tested during an overall weak schedule and finally at tournament time Vegas was tested by Georgetown! They'd had it so easy that once they'd been taken near to the wire the pressure mounted against Duke! Same with Kentucky against Wisconsin once Notre Dame gave them all they could handle! The two teams' paths was almost a direct parallel! In the end, they both cracked when needing to respond being punched in the mouth
Chris Smith nah man Duke beat Wisconsin so how would Kentucky beat Duke when they couldn't even beat Wisconsin nah g that team should've been beat by ND they just missed too many free throws
Did everyone see willie cauley stein literally follow him down the floor the whole 6 seconds and then hands up then someone else hands up then someone else hands up before the shot got off? That was NASTY on the defensive end on our part. #WeAreUK
Absolutely loved every second of that one! In my opinion it's the greatest upset in the round of eight in the 39 years I've watched the entire tournament! And even afterwards, the Morris twins still couldn't face the fact they'd lost! Their arrogance and denial in being interviewed afterwards - "VCU didn't deserve to win that game, (we) Kansas let them win" - was about as self-centered as it gets! Truth is, VCU totally outplayed them in every phase! Kansas' historic pride got in their way of giving VCU their just credit
Besides his '08 national champs, that 2011 team maybe the second best Self has had in his 17 years at Kansas! Definitely the best he's had that didn't win it all!
Not taking a opponent serious. The 40 minutes of 3/4 full court pressue takes it toll. I have tons of great 2nd 16 games from 70s 80s. The 89 semi Illinois vs Michigan was as good as duke kentucky elite 8 final. Last 5 of that game had guys on each side making great plays. 89 semi 2nd half was won cause Rice at 6'9 got hot and was durant like. Robinson also was having a great game dishing ang going to basket. Mich had rice. Higgens. Traylor? And 1 or 2 orther 69 6 10. Mills? Illini center 6'7 was in foul trouble. So they had 6'4 6'4 6'5 6'5 6'8. Hard to beat a team 3 times in one year. Ollini had blown them out once and by 10 or so other game. Want to see some kids from chicago who were not recruited cause the played center of power foward in high school. Same with 2005 illini. Self got the 2 and 3rd allstate kids.
Booker couldn’t guard a lamp post in college. And he was in a major shooting slump the last 6 weeks of that season. The twins were the better choices at that point and already had a runner up finish under their belts.
@@mitchellstafford6196 Exactly. They had 2 platoons. Harrison-Harrison-Lyles-KAT-Willie. Ulis-Book-Lee-Johnson-Poythress (until he got hurt). There was a legitimate argument that year that the 2nd best team in the country was UK's 2nd unit.

Notredame was the better team here. It was a charge at the end but Kentucky played a decent game
Deff not a charge
Lol, wasn't close to being a charge.
Planet Pat!

Did everyone see willie cauley stein literally follow him down the floor the whole 6 seconds and then hands up then someone else hands up then someone else hands up before the shot got off? That was NASTY on the defensive end on our part. #WeAreUK
Best team $ could buy.
VCU vs Kansas... Elite 8
Havoc
The most stressful night of my life
The year my Duke Blued devils won
go cats
This one still stings
Calipari had DEVON BOOKER coming off the bench😕....That's why he's a loser in the tournament
Demarco Williams bruh u know how stacked the kentucky team was? and maybe booker fit better of the bench man you don’t know
Booker couldn’t guard a lamp post in college.
There was a legitimate argument that year that the 2nd best team in the country was UK's 2nd unit.
its sad KU had all this talent and a good coach but needed the refs. oh well beat them this and 10x times better in football lol
KU is Kansas. Kentucky is UK.
💔💔💔
I that we had that game 😂 Kentucky was stacked how many players on that team played in the NBA
Kentucky escaped big time
