Yeah we were going to get a sequel in 2009, but multiple things went wrong. Bryan Singers initial disinterest, after disagreeing with the Warner Bros about the box office returns, " that movie made 400 million, I don't know what constitutes underperforming these days". 179 million was the maximum budget Warner Bros was projecting for the sequel, as Superman Returns cost 204 million to make. Filming for the sequel was to start in mid 2007 before halted development in favor of Valkyrie. Filming was then pushed to March 2008, but writers Dougherty and Dan Harris left in favor of other career opportunities. The writers Guild of America pushed the release date to 2010. Things got worse Routh's contract for a sequel was said to expire in 2009 if they didn't get filming started soon they would lose their main star. With all this Warner Bros deciding to reboot the film series, and Bryan Singer decided he was done with Superman, if he was offered to direct the new Man of Steel film but declined.
pjosepha idk about Reeve being proud of this film more like "I'm thrilled I wasn't a part of a bad sequel: therefore no one could blame me for routh's performance".
I think it's basically that this was the ultimate form of the cgi used in the Spider-Man trilogy before they started using new technology and it changed the look and "feel" of cgi. After this movie we moved into Iron Man's level of effects.
One of the best moments in the movie! Superman being Superman, flying thru Metropolis, saving people while utilizing all his powers to quell disasters. Bravo! 👍🏾👏🏾

Hello, greetings from SE. Texas. I'm 71 years old, a retired US Army disabled veteran. I grew up in the 1950s reading Superman comics & watching Superman on black & white TV! To this day, seeing Superman flying into rescue people & animals from danger still thrills me to no end!!! Superman to the Rescue! Him and his main girl Lois! Lex Luther is always causing them problems. Lol
This is the purest example of a Superman-like action scene. Not him endlessly punching a giant monster through buildings. Just him using all his powers to save as many people as possible.
sorry but when it comes to fighting enemies like zod and doomsday he's gone be fighting them and not saving people constantly, henry cavill is great as superman as well and so is Brandon routh. SUperman is this movie was fighting against the chaos created by luthor so obviously the battles aren't going to be epic its more of saving everyone. Use a little logic next time since the villains vastly impact the fight scenes

Batman Begins and Superman Returns should’ve started the DC Cinematic Universe. Warner Brothers made a mistake not combining the two worlds together. Both movies were one year apart from each other. Both movies were fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with fans and critics. Both movies looked and felt like they could’ve been in the same universe. Both movies brought the two most popular superheroes back on the big screen after a long hiatus. Superman Returns referenced Gotham City. Not to mention, it grossed more money at the box office than Batman Begins whose sequels went on to hit the one billion dollar mark. I Am Legend teased a crossover between them for May 2010. The billboard in Times Square had Bale’s Batman logo and Routh’s Superman logo merged together.
Danny Vestal Bale and Routh were the right age to build a film franchise off of for the next decade plus. DC should’ve kept them, especially since Affleck and Cavill are out.
It's a shame Routh never got a chance to mature as Superman. Back in the day Singer said the sequel was going to be what Wrath of Khan was to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. All they needed was a better script.
Superman: The Man of Steel was suppose to come out in 2009, the Writer's Strike killed that and it was pushed to 2010. Brandon's contract expired in 2009 and wasn't renewed.
I like it too. This one and the Smallville heat vision effect. I think I actually prefer the focused reddish air distortion effect to the fiery laser ray of death that a lot of other versions of heat vision look like.
Most modern day superhero movies dialed their hero powers down to make the movie look normal and realistic too much. This scene alone showed Superman using almost all his abilities! And it's well written too! The way everything happened, how one disaster let to another is so well done here!
I honestly like Brandon Routh as superman than Henry. Henry's face just doesn't fit for Clark Kent's easy on the eyes and still charming with glasses on face. Or maybe I just think like that. Plus, This is also the same superman Christopher Reeve had, doing everything to save humanity with all his abilities, hearing, laser eyes, and all that.

This is how Superman is suppose to be .. effortlessly moving from problem to problem with ease and control . Never putting ppl in harm yet at the same time being assertive in his decision making.
@@itsgoffthat’s also one of the reasons why we still don’t yet have a Video game and the subsequent films since Reeves and Routh have not been good. I like how the Superman chooses to save the people instead of going after his arch nemesis and Lois. That is what superman has always been about. To do the right thing.
You know, I like how Superman does things way smarter here. Gasoline is erupting into flames across the city? Well, one would think that he'd just rush through and put out all of the fires first, but instead, he prioritizes getting to the source of the city's gas first to prevent the flames from getting to the source of gas, and stops it all from there, doubtless saving countless more lives than the method you would THINK he'd do. He also seems to keep damage pretty low, all things considered. There's gonna be some clean-up, for sure, but nothing the city can't handle. It's touches like these that actually makes Superman returns a bit more disappointing. They knew how to make a competent Superman movie, but instead, they got all caught up in homaging the Reeve movies and Superman moping around, not to mention the whole, "Superman is a deadbeat dad" thing.
Cavill is more the modern Superman (New 52/Post-Crisis eras); Chris Reeve embodied the Silver age version of the character; mind you it trimmed the less attractive aspects of his character and did away with the ridiculous amount of baggage the comics had in terms of background characters. What Routh, and Superman Returns in general, should have been was the bridge between the silver age stylings of the Donner films and the then current age Superman comics. A reconciliation if you will.
@@j.t2348 AMEN...I wish people would stop acting like Christopher's Superman is the ONLY SUPERMAN. There is no such thing as a definitive version of a character...comic books are allowed to break that rule all the time why aren't films?

For me, this movie has aged very gracefully. I actually think in some ways it is better now than it was in the year it was released in 2006. I think in general, I appreciate this a lot more now than I did at the time.
It must be a nightmare being Superman. When 50 things are going wrong simultaneously, he must prioritize which things need fixing/saving without sacrificing lives; all the while fixing and saving everyone/everything. That is one of the reason why Superman will always be the GOAT to me.

Sky Warp We get it. You have a hard on for Snyder and Cavill. No one cares. JL bombed and so did BvS. It proved the direction DC was going with the characters was wrong on all levels. The DC Universe as a whole is NOT grim and gritty like Batman 24/7, and the new Shazam film looks to finally show that.
The plane rescue sequence to this day hasn’t been topped by any superhero movie rescue to this day. Also, no superhero today can make that rescue. Only Superman.

Brandon routh should've done more superman movies. The film was and still is good. Christopher reeve would be proud
What stinks is also was supposed to be action-packed with an alien villain.
Sad we didn't get it.
I agree, it was only tainted by the poor plot writing, poor script writing and with Bryan Singer's crime against a minor.
pjosepha idk about Reeve being proud of this film more like "I'm thrilled I wasn't a part of a bad sequel: therefore no one could blame me for routh's performance".

Warner Bros is a mistake...their own worst enemy!
Danny Vestal Bale and Routh were the right age to build a film franchise off of for the next decade plus. DC should’ve kept them, especially since Affleck and Cavill are out.

Cavil was humorless, emotionless, and the whole movie was a crap.
It's a shame Routh never got a chance to mature as Superman. Back in the day Singer said the sequel was going to be what Wrath of Khan was to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. All they needed was a better script.

I honestly like Brandon Routh as superman than Henry. Henry's face just doesn't fit for Clark Kent's easy on the eyes and still charming with glasses on face. Or maybe I just think like that.

Brandon Routh would have been a good Superman in the DCEU.
Herny Cavill is really great, but Brandon reminds me more of Christopher Reeve's Superman.
