A re-run of House brought me here.
Has a sadness to it that New Order's didn't (although it's good too) and reveals what a lovely song it is.
I like this version but I also think New Order's version is brilliant in that they hide the tragedy in the pop tune
With the New Order version, I always thought this was a song about grief caused by a bureaucratic mix up. The Iron and Wine version sounds like it's a ghost story narrated by the ghost.

I really liked your assessment of New Order hiding the tragedy within a pop tune. I've always been so struck by the heartbreak in that song. (This is a great version, as well!)
i like this one better than the original. I didn't even know it was a cover until today.
I heard the original for the first time in the electrical shop of the USS CAYUGA LST 1186 in 1990. We were steaming towards al Jubail Saudia Arabia..We were there to make up the first American troops for Op Desert Sheild. The electrician playing the song had to explain the lyrics to me. It immediately felt heavy. It feels just as such today 32 years later. Especially as America hands over its sovereignty to the billionaire class that selects our politicians. We supposedly sacrificed for our freedom and their Kuwaits democracy. It wad just for oil 🛢 like I've know all along. Maybe the next society resembling the American experiment will learn from the last.

When New Order goes Townes van Zandt
This isnt a happy/hopefuly song even though up until mid 2nd verse hes telling a story of returning from Japan (ww2), about his comrades were brave.
The chorus is the same, but with each iteration up until the start of the 3rd verse, its sounds as he is conveying happiness, and how excited he is to see his wife and child.......
We get to about mid point verse 2. Saying how happy and excited and joyful he was to finally get told he was free to go back home to his family. The next line is extremely subtle, your first couple times listening to this song and when he sings, "Oh I flew through the sky," and "For my country i would die, *and i will SEE it soon*", this conveys that hes flying in the sky (by plane), but he will see death soon.
Finally, he gets home, walks into his house, and instead of getting to feel the embrace of his wife and child, hea met with his wife, on the floor, crying, but not knowimg what is going on at all. At this point of course, he tries to comfort her, but cant as the telegram that she is holding mentions him, and yes hes coming home, but in a coffin.
The true meaning of "Ive got to go home, Ive been so alone you see." Up until this point of the so g, he realizes hes dead, and thus gives a who new meaning when he says hes soaring through the sky....he didnt return home on a plane, but rather, he was already dead upon deliveruy.

This song is essentially about a soldier who fought in world war 2 and was killed in action and his relatives responses to it. Holy shit that’s dark.

Much more traditional! It has more impact with emotion aside from the other version. The other version ignores the message and makes upbeat and you forget what this song is about.

Killivren Heterogony of ends. It manages to be emotional - at least - so... Whatever were the intentions, this version clearly brings up this aspect of the song!
This song has one of the greatest plot twists in music. The upbeat tune of the original is a key part of what hooks you to the setup. You get the sense, "Oh, he gets to go home from battle. He's cheery about it and that's why the song is so peppy." Then ...BAM.
This somber acoustic interpretation makes for a nice reprise, where you already know the plot. So the sad tone from the beginning makes sense.
first version of this song I've heard, looked it up, listened to original. This version is much better.

It Misses all the bits that make you get goosebumps. This person doesn’t understand the original or new order. It’s a very boring tune if you take out the genius guitar and base by new order
