TOP TEN BEST DEATH METAL BASSISTS

  • 10. Alex Webster
    Arguably one of the most influential bassists in the genre. Although he is best known for his work with Cannibal Corpse, its his work with Blotted Science that earned him a spot on on my list.
    9. Stephen Fimmers
    Necrophagist...a band so amazing at what they do, there is actually a viral joke on facebook dedicated to the new album never being released. Mr. Fimmers is a standard to be held by death metal bassists everywhere, and anyone who has seen this band live will agree to that.
    8. Erlend Caspersen
    Anyone who knows Spawn Of Possession will know that they are one of the leading names in technical death metal. What makes Mr. Caspersen stand out, at least to me, is his riff work. His hands are always busy, never venturing into boring territory.
    7. Jeroen Paul Theseling
    One of the leading names in jazz-trained fretless bass playing imposed over death metal. Its a real shame this man has left Obscura.
    6. Steve DiGiorgio
    Again, one of the most influential bassists in the genre. Steve has played for a list of artists a mile long, running the gamut from Sadus, Death, and Quo Vadis to Vintersorg and Iced Earth, among others. He is one of the first guys to popularize and innovate the sound of fretless jazz bass over death metal. For being an innovator and not an immitator, Mr. DiGiorgio earns the number 6 spot on my list.
    5. Dominic "Forest" LaPointe
    Yet another jazzy fretless bassist slipping and sliding his way over death metal chunkiness. What sets Forest apart from the rest is his tapping and technical proficiency, taking the thing Steve DiGiorgio does to the next level.
    4. Scott Plummer
    First time I saw this guy's bass I thought: "What the living fuck?" This guy is nuts, and what keeps him from being higher on the list, is the fact that I find a lot of his craziness tends to get a bit same-y. That aside, absolutely insane bassist with an absolutely insane number of strings.
    3. Jeff Hughell
    Brain Drill, Rings Of Saturn, I Came To Hate, Reciprocal. Mr. Hughell is certainly making his mark as one of the best bassists in the field. His ability to play is beyond talented, however I think that fact is lost on a lot of people who are unable to grasp the overly technical aspect of his basslines.
    2. Mike Flores
    Anyone who has seen Origin live will tell you Mike Flores is one of the craziest bassists in the universe, no doubt. His unique style of playing coupled with his incredible speed would have earned him the number one spot on my list if it weren't for a few things: The bass on the albums in mixed in a way that makes what he is actually doing nearly inaudible; He is the best at what he does, but that is all he does, rarely does he branch out into other styles of play such as slapping or tapping.
    AND THE NUMBER ONE BEST BASSIST IN DEATH METAL........
    1. Jaron Evil
    I had the honour of seeing Archspire when they came to my town a while back, and honestly folks, this guy blew my mind! Take the fretless work of Steve DiGiorgio, the slapping skills of Les Claypool, the tapping ability of Jeff Hughell, and the "quick fingering" technique of Mike Flores, roll it into one dude who does all of it while screaming the sickest back up vocals I've ever heard, and you got Mr. Evil. He does all his work on a 6-string fretless, and is probably the most diverse and innovative bassist in the scene at the moment. Definitely my number 1 favourite.

    linus klausenitzer, jeff hughell, lapointe are my favourites. scott plummer on the other hand is so technically advanced, he can play arpeggio stuff on his bass that no guitarist could ever on a guitar. to me it almost seems as if tech death and death metal in general is the only genre where bassists can actually explore the limits of the instrument as well as their own limits and are not bound to just mimic the guitars or play a fundamental note per bar. as a guitarist, i really wish more people would start to look at bass as an instrument of its own, because it makes things so much more interesting. obscura and beyond creation are the best exemples for that in my opinion.

    Alex Webster IS the ultimate death metal bass player, period. He's the only one in this list that has actually made improvements in the way bass players should approach their instruments regarding death metal, there are some other great bass players here but with less "vision", and the rest are just louder than what Alex usually is in the final mix.

    Nice! Jaron is a good friend of mine. Didn't expect this at all but cool, he is really good. Archspire is a great band and theres some pretty unknown earlier stuff he's done I had the pleasure of doing sound and shooting a little video here and there.. he's not only a friend but just a gem to work with. He's had a health issue and is taking a break. I hope to hear good news about him returning to the stage probably later this year.
    Very cool you saw him play live and that he even got a mention here... I can't do any top 10 lists myself.. its a 10 way tie with several honorable mentions to me.. I don't compare art. I don't believe in "better" I only recognize the talent that exists for what it is. You could sub categorize this.. feel, skill, presence.. many factors to consider.

    It's funny how many of these bass players use more strings than most guitarists. (the 7 string and the 87425239765941 string i saw

    • @vZZenn
      @vZZenn 8 лет назад +1

      A lot of these bands use 7 string guitars. The one guy you saw uses a 10 string bass but most of the time he only uses 6-7. (also most of these bassists were using 4-6 string basses)

    Good list, and while I think Webster should be at the top for his sheer precision and musical theory-wizardry, it's your list.

    When I hear some songs in this top... I wonder "What do Metal need to be so technical ?" I love when it's technical, but not too. Beacause it's impossible to play :'(

    • @PomPomPomPommy
      @PomPomPomPommy 10 лет назад +2

      Yes, because normally the primary role of the bass is to keep a certain depth and to keep rythme with the drums, in addition to a small melodic role. ^^ Too high notes on bass is not good...

      ***** I would say that would have to go over to prog metal or jazz, but death metal can get up there in technicallity (although, some of the shittier death metal can get pretty low

    • @SuburbanNinja-dt5rl
      @SuburbanNinja-dt5rl 10 лет назад +1

      More Range and don't have to tune down... theres a lazy factor to that as the rest of the gutiars have to tune less they are 7 or 8 string guitars.

    I don't agree that any of this is death metal it all sounds like grind core! Death metal to me is grave , pungent stench, general surgery, obituary, immolation, suffocation etc... But I do like whatever this stuff is I guess it is the new scene of death metal! :-)

    • @justins5715
      @justins5715 8 лет назад +2

      Did you just call Death grind core? Please tell me you're a troll

    • @vZZenn
      @vZZenn 8 лет назад

      Grind core is shit imo hahah
      Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, Beyond Creation, Obscura, Viraemia, Origin, Spawn of Possession, Rings of Saturn (deathcore), Archspire, and even Death you call grindcore? I personally think cannibal corpse is as generic raw death metal you can get. Not my thing, but all the others are tech death. So just a lot less "simplistic" I guess you could say and a lot more advanced music theory, technical ability, and creativity. Grind core is the opposite of creativity and using music theory. Most of these bands (the latter 9 I mentioned) are all very progressive though. Idk how being progressive is similar to grind core though.

    • @vZZenn
      @vZZenn 8 лет назад +1

      YeOldeBassist I think this was more of technical and creative ability. "best" is subjective and everybody has their own idea of what best is. These guys weren't really pioneers (besides Death) but they're the top 10 in terms of being masterful at their craft

    Alex Webster is the best...Viraemia, Archspire are just "LICKS" bands...c`mon guys...i did those licks on my 2nd year studing bass guitar. Pure chromatic, diminished, or some tap on dimished arpegios...easy to play, boring to hear.
