  • Is time a substrate that contains and generates all events within it, or is time continually constructed by the interaction of entities within and through it?
Let’s make a patch where time and causality are entangled together for expressive use.

I truly believe the only moment in your life where you can observe, learn, eat, sleep, think, patch, speculate about time and the structure of the Universe, where you can really be - is now. Everything else is an illusion. I can only watch this video right now, but I'll try to watch it yesterday or tomorrow. Nah, even with my basic time travelling skills, 'now' just travels with me. As for infinity, 'now' is always in the exact middle of the macro- and microcosm. It makes me wonder. Best wishes, Walker!

I really didn’t think this was going to get any better than “to patch a modular synth, first you really need to answer for yourself whether you think time is a substrate, or more of a side effect” but then at around 09:45 when it became clear that you’d taken us around the garden path and led us through building an *inverse Krell patch* (short notes high, long notes low, but note pitch determined by length instead of vice versa) just to make a point about Time, I found I was mistaken. Thank you once again for a midweek lesson I didn’t know I needed (and another few hundred pages added to my “to read” list!)

very interesting patch and talk. "The order of time" by Carlo Rovelli could instigate more reflections on time and its meaning in a broader and more contemporary sense. Thanks for the inspiration

Also Hartmut Rosa's Social Acceleration has deep insights on the nature of time (and as far as hear here, not that different from Barad's)

Some very interesting philosophical questions in there. And a great patch with many inspiring possibilities in there. I'd like to add a mind-bending question that I usually ask myself. How would you think of Time if you were an Eternal being?

This is such a neat patch! It brings a new use for even very basic envelope generators you may already have in, say, a semi modular east coast synth.

This video just proves how much more there is to learn and explore in the modular system. Depending on the clock rate the sampled output of the Maths high is different... wtf?!

Yet another clever patch and thought-provoking monologue! My bud and I agree that whenever we see your vids, we have a thought like "maybe i should sell everything and just have a shared system" so I think you're doing something quite right :)
The original author's Dune novels, notably God Emperor, have some really cool sections on the nature of time that came up to me while considering the thoughts here.

The same two things always happens after a video on this channel :
    - I have to mop up the floor to remove the liters of drool caused by the system.
    - I've learned more about synthesis that i can use, translate or extrapolate.

This is like a reverse 0-coast krell, in which the same voltage was used to control pitch and time, so higher notes were shorter than long ones. Reverse in flow, not results.

    Time is relevant.
    Our perception is everything.
I figured out why time felt longer when we were kids.
Remember how long a year felt when u were like 5 years old or something? Vs now ?
At 5 years old .. 1 year is 1/5 of your existence on earth.
    At 25 1 year is 1/25th
    At 50. 1/50
This is why time appears to go faster bc of our frame of reference.
Every time I tell someone this shit I figured out they are stumped and quiet and start thinking and I just walk away and let them stew on it
    Love your vids Walker

I'd suggest you take a look at Ian Hacking's writing, e.g., The Social Construction of What? He is gone from us now and the books might seem to be from an earlier age. But his analysis and writing style are superb about untangling vocabularies, concepts and other convoluted notions. He's a big fan of Foucault -- who is apparently an influence of Barad's -- and very strong on "Science Studies" -- also a "thing" for Barad. But really, I think to cut to the chase, you have to find a good, philosophically oriented book on the Advaita Vedanta which is a body of thought that tries to dispense with the Dagwood Sandwich of neo-logisms, distinctions and categorizations that seem to be required in order to justify the notion that reality is ultimately composed of irreducibly small bits of (poorly behaved) matter. On the other hand, I don't think Hacking will be helpful with patching ideas; but that was never the point of this comment. And maybe not even of your video.... as useful as it is in that regard (as always!) Thanks.

There's also the time-money manifold. Any expansion in the money dimension corresponds to a proportional contraction in the time dimension.
