What I have heard on these units is that it is important for the coil to make contact with outer housing at the base, because the housing acts as a heat sink. A lot of the aftermarket coils do not make contact and therefore over heat eventually. On these units where that physical contact is important you may see fins on the outer housing and air circulation fittings, especially on old military vehicles.
Good video for those not electronically inclined and all I would add is that sometimes the capacitor on the input lead itself where the switched ignition lead connects to the distributor (ignitor) will fail and you won't get any power to the coil or the module.
i have an m37 it looks like the same dist ...it has small tube from fuel pump vac outlet to the bottom of the dist vacuming air across the dist to cool itthe other side of dist the tube goes to carb causing an air flow to the dist a lot of folks dont nhave these tubes connected i have a factory drawing that show thes tubes a mutt may be diff.
This is really helpful, I hear there is a way to replace the coil with a modern version coil because american made coils are hard to find. Any thoughts or ideas?
No luck with reproduction coils. Just purchased a NOS American made coil on eBay. They come up occasionally there but very expensive. Try to find the coil kit in the sealed bag. I got fucked by someone selling me a supposedly new one on eBay and the secondary was open. Buyer beware.
