Freddie Mercury was so much more than a rock singer, he was a brilliant musician, an excellent singer, songwriter, storyteller. He had an eclectic musical taste and the range to sing operatic songs. Montserrat Caballé was one of the most famous opera divas of the last century, she was famous for her very high soft notes. Freddie and Montserrat became good friends very quickly, they adored each other and Montserrat was brave enough to take the risk to sing with a rock star, because she recognized The Musician in Freddie instantly. Great reaction, thank you. Pls, check out the Golden Boy at La Nit 88, that is even more theatrical and Freddie have composed a little musical surprise into that.

I think Freddie was so proud of this effort and album, especially at this point in his life. The challenge fed his soul -- It was a much needed salvo for his Aids journey. He was aware and insecure about his ability to perform live; he confided in Montserrat about his illness and their friendship deepened. Her interviews then and late in life treated his memory as a precious gift in her life.

Montserrat Caballé was one of the best voices in the opera world in her time. A huge star. She was so kind and a lovely woman. Freddie loved her very much. They became friends. Most of the opera singers bored me very much as a young person - as they still do today. 😀 She was a great exception. She was so often a star at the Vienna Opera in my homeland Austria.

'Barcelona' is Freddie's love letter to Monste. He recounts the first time that they met and how he felt. It's a quite well known anecdote now that he was incredibly nervous at meeting his idol. And then when she arrived, he was like a schoolboy in a sweetie shop.

This is such a beautiful piece performed by two powerhouses. Freddie recorded a whole album called "Barcelona" and collaborated with Monserrat. She sang a few more duets with him. The whole album is fantastic.
As far as I know, this song was supposed to be the theme song for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, but because of Freddie's death, they chose a different song.

Hi! Montserrat needed a song written for the 1992 Olympics, which took place in Barcelona. She wanted to do a whole album for/with him, but this was definitely her first request, as she was slotted to perform it there. I love it too. He sang others with her on stage that there are videos of. Love everything of Freddie’s and Queen.

Freddie mercury felt that Montserrat, Monsy, had the most beautiful voice he had ever heard. He was in Italy and saw her performing and made that comment. It got back to monsy and she wanted to meet Freddie. She been asked him to collaborate on a pc for the opening ceremonies of the 1992 summer Olympics to be held in Barcelona. She was from Barcelona the song had to be in about 4 years prior to the start of the Olympics to be considered. He wrote this song about Narcelona but as you mentioned it's actually about him meeting her. This was done in 88. He Told her that he would not be around to sing it live at the opening ceremonies in 92. As best as I can piece it together she Was the very 1st person he told that he was sick. This was even before he TOLD His band mates. Sadly he passed in 91. They did use the song in the opening ceremonies but it was done through video. After the rounding success Otherworldly duet many musicians contacted her to also perform with her as Freddy did. She said no. Was her and Freddy and she would never attempt to Duplicate it with any other singer. It was her and freddie's alone. There are 2 other songs Alexa On RUclips With freddie and Montserrat. They are golden boy and how can I go on. They are Simply spelled binding And then that mercury mercury touch. They did do an album titled Barcelona. There are interviews on RUclips with monsy regarding their relationship and the whole Genesis of this piece. The love respect admiration enjoyment that they have towards one another and performing with one another Just spills out.

This song for sure became an anthem, as it should be. The calling for the city and the love to be celebrated was to celebrate the Olympics of 1992 at Barcelona. Freddie was already ill, and they probably knew that they wouldn't be able to perform together at the Opening Ceremony. ❤

    Wonderful reaction, Thank you!
There are two other songs from the Barcelona album that were performed live at La Nit:
    "How Can I Go On"
(The lyrics are rather autobiographical, considering the stage of Freddie's life/illness.)
    and
    "The Golden Boy"
(Which is my favorite of the live performances... part opera, part gospel!)
From the rest of the album, I'd definitely recommend:
    "Exercises In Free Love"
(This is a demo Freddie recorded, where he sings Montserrat's SOPRANO part!)
    and
    "Ensueno"
(This is the follow-up/companion piece after "Exercises In Free Love"; a finished duet where Freddie "trades parts" and sings in an OPERATIC BARITONE... Something Montserrat said she "convinced him to do and gave him some pointers".)
    also
    "La Japonaise"
    (Unbelievably BEAUTIFUL.)

It was a love song for the city of Barcelona. Freddie wrote "Barcelona" at Montserrat's request for submission and consideration to be THE theme song for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Had Freddie lived, he & Montserrat would have sung it together at the opening. Alas, he passed away before that could take place.

This was indeed meant to be an anthem, written specifically for the Barcelona 1992 Olympics. Montserrat was from Barcelona, and was so impressed with Freddie, she asked him to do an album with her. Tim Rice was invited by Freddie to contribute to lyrics on 2 of the album songs. Tim had been the lyricist for Evita, and Jesus Christ Super Star among other works, and said a few years later, that Freddie, had he lived, could no doubt create a grand opera. He was very impressed with Freddie's immense talents and said he was not sure why Freddie asked for his imput other than to just have a different perspective, as Freddie could easily fill the album with wonderful songs by himself

Have you ever listened to Marc Martel? He was born with Freddie's voice. It's insane how much he sounds like Freddie, he's literally brought Celine Dion to tears singing for her (huge fan of Freddie). Well he trained himself to sing opera in the style of Pavarotti. So he has an album combining the two sounds, he calls it the Mercurotti. If this makes you wonder what Freddie would have sounded like if he trained himself in opera, check that out.
