When you have no local market of buyers it will depress the price of anything. Someone has to travel to Afghanistan, source the raw material, arrange for it's safe transport out of the country, and then deal with finding another buyer there. $5000 sounds like a lot but it might actually be reasonable given the difficulty involved.

2:42 What he is reciting is called Ad-Du'a Al-Istiftah (the opening invocation).
It is said right after the Takbeer Al-Ihraam (the first Allahu Akbar that begins the Prayer).
This first Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) renders doing things prior to the prayer Haram (unlawful), hence why it is called Takbeer Al-Ihraam. You are not allowed to chat or greet people as you are engaged with your Lord until Tasleem (the end of the Prayer).
The video is edited as he rises up from prostration which takes places later on after the Du'a Al-Istiftah:
Subhanaka Allahumma wa bi-Hamdik, wa Tabaraka-Asmuk, wa Ta'ala Jadduk, wa La ilaha ghayruk.
Exalted, Glorified above all imperfections are You O Allah, and Blessed is Your Name, and Exalted is Your Majesty, and there is no God worthy of worship but You.
      Then he begins reciting Al-Fatihah.
All mankind are welcome to become Muslims and pray like the Malãa'ikah (angels) and Prophets and believers worship the Creator of this world. If you do that you'll get the light of Eemaan inside the heart as a reward in this life and the Eternal Jannah 'Adn (Paradise of Delight) after this life.
That part of the video is worth more than trillions of what this entire world contains if you only knew.

Cutting and sanding wood is way more dangerous, not only do you use actual blades but the grits you use are much lower. Alfred Nobel, the creator of dynamite, later created the Nobel Peace Prize because he was disgusted by his invention being turned into a deadly weapon.
Instead of saying "these folks are using a weapon of war to mine gems" it's probably more accurate to say "Fighters are misusing a mining tool as a weapon"

I might have missed it but I didn't really hear any reason why rocks became more precious than human life, or why people in one of the most resource-rich countries in the world still struggling with poverty. it seems to me, by adding the context of who funded the Taliban as the mujahadeen in 1990 because they fought against the soviets. With this and other geopolitical considerations it would give important context to these individual stories that people are climbing into deadly mines, walking around with massive cameras worth just as much as any gemstone in a country where getting murdered for a gemstore isn't out of the question, and so on.
Without talking about the imperialist politics, the conscious underdevelopment and destabilization that countries like the united states have put onto Afghanistan this work fails to explain the questions that it itself provides.

      So very true....!!
But it's a western production..and they have the dirty habit of NOT providing any context to the current situation and also hiding the truth - same like their governments.
So you can imagine the mentality of the western citizens also.
They label others as terrorists, insurgents and thugs...but don't realize what they are !!!
      They are far worse !!!
