Scarlet, you’re such an inspiration to me. I’m a self employed designer and maker of clothes and toys etc, living in New Zealand. Since watching you I’ve bought a Juki sewing machine and a Jack overlocker and just love them 😊. As a creative person I think we all live with work guilt and occasionally envy the 9 to 5ers. Just make sure you do what you love and keep being you. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to 😁

I’m a crafter, a sewist, and quilter, but I’ve never made a patch work clothing item in my 62 yrs. Until now. Your colour sense and ability to pull fabrics together is amazing, love everything you make and everything you wear. I’m working on my first patchwork jumpsuit, with a tea towel bodice, using one I bought as a template. The one I bought is a stretch fabric with no buttons, zips or similar closure, the one I’m making is woven cotton so I’m having to piece a much bigger piece of fabric. I’m actually thinking of changing it to a pinny instead so I can pop it over my head and then pulling the stash apart to find stretch fabrics that would go together. I’ve never even thought about tea towels until I started watching you. I really should go dye my grey hair pink too, it’s been years since I did but still have my dyes.
As for what you should do, do whatever makes you happy. Money is not the way to happiness, believe me. You must pay your bills and eat to stay healthy, but happiness will help you live longer.

It’s so challenging to work for yourself, been doing it since 2012 and I feel like I’ve only just begun to find more balance. It’s hard because 1) we don’t usually have consistent incomes as self employed artists 2) it’s hard to turn off the ideas and the feeling of “I should be doing this to get ahead and prepped for the next day/ the next project/ the commission etc” I think it’s a brilliant idea to sell patterns and slow down custom work. You still get to be creative and share in the process while empowering others to upcycle and make their own clothing and it’s inspiring! You’re making me wanna dust off my old sewing machine!❤

I’m a crafter and have stashes of a variety of different media including fabrics, beads and yarn. My current pash is crochet, having made jewellery and Christmas tree ornaments for the past 15 odd years. Before that I had a small business making children’s leather jackets as well as wedding dresses for a couple of years. I have so many project packs stored away and will probably never get to them all, but I’ll have a darned good try! I love following your channel as I’m fascinated with how you play with colours and many times you’ve given me inspiration for my projects. So, thank you!

I have had both a full time job and run a small business so I know exactly how you feel. Remember that when you run a business you need to spend time in the business and then you need to spend time on the business and how you are running it. I think you know already from previous comments I have made here that I am a crafter. I make various stuff from upcycled items from the various thrift stores around here. I resize clothes or turn the items into bags, etc. But sometimes I experiment with other items too to expand the range of what I am doing. I also have a lot of art supplies as well including sketch books, colored pencils, water colors, pen & ink, etc. I do tend to jump around sometimes from one thing to another. Often I like drawing sketches from photos I take and that is another hobby I have: taking photos with my phone. So I guess I am just a very crafty person in general. I also have a few small looms I got at the thrift so I will try those one of these days too. I also want to try darning socks (which looks rather simple as I do love my wool socks) and try that "felting". Oh and now I got this crazy idea of trying to make a stuffed animal out of some stuff from the thrift and stick all of those itty bitty scraps from sewing in there!!
I do find you to be a very great motivator. That is you inspire me. Sometimes I do have other stresses or problems and when that happens I kind of lose interest in sewing but seeing you work on some project certainly brings my enthusiasm back! 😊 i don't know if I mentioned it before but I do have autism (type 1 aka Asperger's) so often life can be a tad difficult.
I have to go to the allergist on Monday. More skin prick testing.

It was easy to get hooked in watching and waiting for the next video with your imaginative way with colour and fabric. I get what you're saying and agree you need to tweak your business to fulfil what your needs are! Sewers will be jumping up and down with joy at the prospect of more patterns and tutorials like myself. While purchaser's will wait for a treasured piece - let's face it your clothes are a lifetime piece and not a throwaway item! I have purchased some of your patterns in the past and am looking forward to playing with them after the holiday season. your plan for 2025 is brilliant. having teh ability to move towards a more passive income (patterns) will hopefully give you more time to focus on the active income you want to do (tea towel outfits). I think many crafters are visual learners, so any videos you can put out on youtube would be so very helpful for us. AND get paid for it? yes please!! I do a lot of things. So what ever you do is fine. As a person who is creative you must stay fresh and that means change without apology . You do what ever you have to to stay fresh and feel good about yourself. If people like you they will watch you. I watch you, but I would never make or wear one of your creations. I'm 81 years old and if I should wear one of your outfits they would pack me off to the funny farm. But I love your creations and the way you think and your chatter. It is refreshing to me and I can feel young again. It dose take me out of myself for a bit. Like going for a nice walk (when I can not). Please do not get after yourself for wanting to change up things. Do continue to change and grow. The best to you.

As a fellow small business owner, I absolutely feel you on the "business guilt"! I really found the book "How to Not Always Be Working" by Marlee Grace really helpful, especially for identifying the "grey areas" in my work. I return to it a lot when I'm feeling out of sorts.
As for your comment prompt -- I'm probably the crafter/maker! I have a tea towel I'm collecting fabric to put into one of your designs with, and keeping my fingers crossed for some new dress designs (I'm not a mini dress gal). I'm also hoping to buy one of your tea towel dresses eventually, but I live in Canada so I keep putting it off 😅

You're a lovely person and very inspiring. So your plans won't change that in any way 🥰. And I can really understand your desire of some change.
Moreover your plans are so meaningful : we have to reduce fast fashion for a sustainable and enduring planet and with your projects you may contribute even more to that.

Scarlet, I enjoy watching your unique way of crafting. I am an old crafter, having done all you do, but you give me a reason somedays, to get out of bed. Tutorials will probably help me get the sewing machine out, especially on my depressed days. Its your way of speaking that delights me. I am sure you will have plenty of interest for tutorials. Go for it girl!!❤❤

I have done everything in my lifetime so it really doesn't matter. I just enjoy watching your videos. I'm all for seeing more videos from you. 😊 and people evolve. sometimes they get tired of sewing and want to do something else and vice versa. People at work look at me like I'm crazy when I get there and sigh and say "oh I'm so glad to be here. I can rest." 😂 I sell on eBay during the day and work a full-time second shift job and I have to say the clock in/clock out is so much easier. I have no choice but to work because health insurance is so ridiculous if you're self-employed in the US. I feel like a slug when I actually sit down and don't work on anything at home . But I have finally gotten into a routine where I refuse to do anything on Sundays. That's it. I don't get off the couch except for food or coffee. I read or watch TV. It's the no work zone.😊

It is so hard balancing your own business and having a life. You do suffer from 'work guilt', I know I do and I'm sure most people who create what they sell suffer from this. I am currently juggling my textile art sales/fairs etc, with a part time job to make ends meet whilst having two young children. It's very tiring, but I need to make a living so..... I've been doing this for years now and until the last year or so I was working all hours at night and weekends to keep ahead but I burnt out. I now have firmer boundaries (there is a little bit of flexibility if I've got a big deadline or event) and I'm definitely happier for it. You will find your way Scarlett but ultimately you've got to do what makes you happy otherwise you just won't stick at it. I wish you all the best with your planning xx

Hi Scarlett. For me I have crafted all my life but find what I really love is anything made with fabric, thread, yarn, floss, buttons and ribbon. I've loved watching you up-cycle fabric into bags and clothing. 100% of my makes are from thrift store purchases. I make fabric shoe bags, book covers, table mats, pillow cases, pin cushions etc. Machine and hand stitched. Right now I'm sewing dolls clothes. I enjoy your spirit and the colours you use. Thanks.

Running a small business is tough and balance is extremely difficult (I know!). I have found your blogs inspiring and joyful, but for you to be able to carry on, you need not to be pulled down by the grind of completing orders, which are also limiting your income potential (you can only make so many garments let month). I am a crafter, so more interested in tutorials and patterns. Would be great to see a wider range of your patterns avaiable, which, once completed would give you a passive income as they will just sell without more effort from yourself. Tutorials and inspirational vlogs would naturally draw people to your website.
With the state of the planet as a result of the garment industry overproduction I think it is exteremly important to have influencers promoting upcycling in a joyous and positive way. You are working in the right direction. Keep.going and be bold x

I sew, can and have made clothes, I make quilts, I hand embroider, I FMQ on my Juki SS machine. I crochet a bit, I struggle with knitting. I make ‘junk’ journals, mainly botanical and nature based, I have a huge collection of antique and vintage books. I’m a retired secondary school teacher of science, mainly Biology. I love your colours but don’t quite dare wear so many at once, I tend to save my colours for my quilts.
