Retractable caster base for a table saw

- My new table saw is very heavy and difficult to move. I made a mobile base with retractable casters out of wood and hardware that I had in my shop. The only thing that I purchased was 3" casters from Harbor Freight. This mechanism is very easy to operate and makes moving the saw effortless.
I had built something similar on my old saw using the same lever action setup, but instead of building a frame around the legs, I attached the supports to the inside of the legs and the casters hinged on those. I also used smaller casters (2"). It's definitely better than nothing, but with the casters so close together, it makes the saw a bit unsteady. The wider footprint of the new setup and the larger casters make for a much smoother ride.

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice ruclips.net/user/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.
I grew up using this exact table saw with my dad. I bought him a new saw for fathers day a couple years ago and he passed this saw down to me. I have been trying to figure out the best way to add wheels because it has difficult to move around, totally taking this idea. T

Impressive design. I just decided this is what I am going to build. I'm in the middle of a project to organize the garage and I want to be able to park the cars in there for the first time in forever. Being able to move the table saw is essential. Thanks for the video.

Hey this works!!! Got it put together and it ROLLS really nicely! Thank goodness for scrap pile lumber and a chop saw plus a new Dewalt Driver gift from my son.. now to the wife's honey do list.

I inherited an old Craftsman table saw from my father in law. It is all cast iron, as is the motor. Must weigh 200 lbs at least. I've been walking it around the garage when I need to move it. This is really going to come in handy. Thanks for the video.

This is a great design. Thank you for sharing your take on it. Something like this will be perfect for my shop.
The only thing that I think I'll try to add is some leveling feet. Since the casters lift the frame off the ground, I think a carriage bolt in each corner will make it easy to adjust and work out any wobble caused by an uneven floor.

I made this! I just screwed a 2x4 through the holes already in the frame on each side from front to back and added the hinged lever mechanism as in the video. No pieces across the front or gussets under the feet as the saw was level already. I used 2 " wheels which were good for 126lbs each. Less parts, faster to make and same results. What a great, simple idea that works.

My favorite thing about this is the control with which you are able to release the latch holding the saw up on the casters. One foot can move the latch AND easily catch the 2x4 jack/lever to safely lower the saw. Always check for shop pet tails!

Finally made ! Works real slick! Had to "whittle" a little bit of the 2x4 frame away to compensate for 360 Degree rotation of caster wheels as they were offset a bit. One thing I might add and saw it somewhere is mounting a piece of pegboard to one side of or both the steel leg frame(s) to hold extra saw blades, squares, whatever! Thanks

I had the same saw last year but sold it bc the fence sucked and now I have an old Rockwell saw with different fence but it isn't a Saw Stop...hehehe good luck and I'll be looking for your videos.
Very ingenious design. I'm looking at modifying an old cabinet to be my mobile planer stand and I wanted a way for the planner to be resting flat on the ground. I think I can use your device as a model for my version.

Like your design. What kind of fence are you using. Need a decent, but affordable rip fence for my new/old Craftsman 113 table saw.
Really liked the simplicity of this. I'm in the process of putting it together now and need to know whether to use swivel wheels or 2 fixed/2 swivel. At the end where you swivel it around freely suggests that you used swivel wheels for all four. Is that so?

Looks good but does it put a lot of stress on the castors? I got that exact same saw except i got 3/4” steel wings and a 150 lb band saw on top where the table saw would go.. retrofitted it but damn things about 400 lbs now and cant get castors to stay underneath it.. always end up breaking off everytime i go to move it.. and dont want it rollable all the time cuz itd end up running me over or something..

Dustin simple practical design. I too have A CRAFTSMAN but with a direct drive motor. Hey $50 for me was afffordable. I'm in the final cutting and assembling stage. My only question is the length of the 2 push locking pieces. Thank you
Im in the process of building this as we speak. In the final stages. 1 question. Does the 1x2 that sides inside the groove in the 2x4 go all the way in the groove flush? Thanks for your help.
robertintexas Yes. Since 1x material is actually only 3/4" thick, just cut a 3/4" deep dado in the underside of the 2x4 lever.
Thanks for the quick reply. I'll actually have to go a little deeper since I bought a thin strip of flat aluminum at Lowe's to facilitate a slicker slide.
Neat. I'm thinking about adapting this to my new (old) unisaw. That bastard's about 500lbs, and the bottom's enclosed, so I'd need to move the lift mechanism. Or make two levers - one on each side. I also don't like the idea of lifting and supporting the entire weight of the saw on screws (holding the 1x4's in, and on the hinges), so I'm going to have to give that some thought too.
Brad Roy you may check out Matthias Wandel’s channel. He’s made a couple videos regarding caster bases for various equipment. One of them being a cabinet saw. Jimmy Diresta also made a base for his old cabinet saw.
Great design. One question, did you rout the 2x4 to completely fit the 1 by inside it?
+Roger Blythe Thanks. I just roughed it out with the tablesaw so the slot was just a bit wider than the 1X. The depth of the slot will accommodate the thickness of the 1X.
what do you have under the saw for sawdust capture? I see a hose hanging down... Is there some sort of a collector trap?
It was a square plastic funnel type thing. It was on the saw when I bought it used. Not sure what company originally sold it. It didn’t work very well though.
I like yours better than others on here. Yours is simple and the 3 inch casters must roll better than 1 1/2 inch ones.

Blue Cow I don’t recall exactly where I saw it, but there were no detailed plans. It was either a series of photos or a short video. I just figured it out based on that.
Wow! Thanks for showing your saw base! So much better than the junk sold for $40 by Northern Tool with the itty bitty wheels that choke when I try to roll the saw over a small bump in my driveway. The only question (dumb, if I didn't ask) : would you have used 4" casters, if you had them?
Jeffrey Wong you could maybe get away with 4" casters, but they'll make the angle of the step board steeper, which may cause some issues unless the base is wider than mine.
Just one other question, it looks like the foot lever mechanism isn't centered between the legs. Does it make any difference if it offset like yours , or centered. Thank you!
Nope. Shouldn’t matter. My saw originally had a dust chute that hung down so I built around that.

On the 2x4 I just put a strip of tin and some on the end of the inner piece of wood its as smooth as anything in the action

I have that same saw. I noticed a vacuum hose, but the saw didn't have any type of dust collection when new. Can you show what is being used to collect the dust?

For less friction, how about a wheel or roller where the compound levers meet rather than just a slide groove?
Cincinnatus you could, but I’ve never had any friction issues. Besides, nothing a little paste wax can’t take care of.

+Uhlan I knew I had seen a video about it. It's a wonderful setup, now if only my garage floor were level to keep the saw from rocking...
You could set it up so the saw's adjustable feet stick through so you can, well, adjust them. If you tend to use the saw in the same general spot, you wouldn't have to adjust them by much or often.
I had a wavy wood floored shed when I made mine and just shoved a wedge under a corner.

I want to figure out how to morph this design into a beer keg dolly.
I'm not sure this design would be suitable. You'd have to move the lever arm to the outside of the keg or have the keg sitting much higher. You may check Mathias Wandel's channel (or website www.woodgears.ca/mobile_base/index.html) he's made several variations of mobile bases that my adapt to your beer keg better.
