Fun Fact: Tim recorded this entire song in one take (per part, obviously). It was so good that it even made his second album Higher, which celebrates its 10 year anniversary this year!
It sounds that way because the second-to-last chord is a substitute chord of the dominant of Ab...to put it simply, it's a resolution that we're used to hearing so we feel it resolve to Ab regardless of the surrounding context. The Ab chord is NOT the tonic of the key and certainly won't analyzed as such, but because the resolution is so familiar to us, it legitimizes itself.
Making hose awkward intervals sound in a certain way is all about the context, and there for me at least lays the beauty and difficulty of composing music. Same with chords.
I have to say that 1:25 to 1:40 is one of the actual most nostalgic parts about this performance. Something about the repeatedly rhythm mixed with the notes just makes it feel like the past.

I would pitch a guess at no pitch correction, just based on Tom as a singer. In other recordings he's done, you can hear enough overtones to rule out pitch correction. So probably not.

Tim, I had to listen to this three (3) times today (9/18/22) to finally figure out what you (Lead) was doing. Your performance was exemplary - I'm sure Freddie is smiling through tears of joy. What I noticed was from 1:05 through 2:00 - you sang to the wall. There was something you were thinking about, and it was deep. That through caused you to go behind the wall, and there were a couple of times that you held back an emotion that most mere mortals aren't able to - the thought of a single person standing right in front of you looking into your eyes, that you love deeply. I'm learning how to use the wall, and I hope to become half as talented/effective as you are in that segment. I've never felt as happy about crying as I did at the end of that segment. Though the word I'm choosing is hyphenated, it's as best as I can do : soul-stirring.
I love how the melody shifts between the Lead and the Tenor part, it happens so smoothly that if you are not looking for it you can easily miss it, but at the same time in certain parts it's screaming at you that this is the melody. Seriously love this piece and I would love to perform it!
