- "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten" by British singer Dusty Springfield, written by Clive Westlake. Recorded June 1 1968 at Chappel Studios in London, "I Close My Eyes..." was released that August to reach 4 in the UK where it ranks as one of Springfield's biggest hits: of her solo singles only "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" (3) and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" (1) outrank "I Close My Eyes..." while "I Only Want to Be with You" matches its 4 peak ("I Only Want to Be With You" charted substantially longer than I Close My Eyes...", eighteen weeks as opposed to twelve).
In the US "I Close My Eyes..." was Springfield's final release on the Phillips label, Springfield having signed in June 1968 to have Atlantic Records be her US label of release as of that August: consequently the single was virtually ignored in the US reaching 122 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart in Billboard. (The US release of "I Close My Eyes..." replaced the UK B-side "No Stranger Am I" with Springfield's rendition of "La Bamba".)
My favourite Dusty song, love the intro too, goose bumps !
Thats what I love about her,no shouting,just a sweet,emotional,beautiful voice.
No auto tuning, no wailing, shouting just a beautiful voice with great feeling and soul x
Simply wonderful, quite probably the best female singer ever..... I cannot think of another to touch her ability...... If only she had been able to make more music..... She will never be forgotten..... RIP Dusty
@@TheSoupdragon1968Sandy Denny was and remains the greatest female vocalist of all time.
Recorded the year i was born, what quality most of the music was in the 60s,unlike the crap we contend with today!!
It was written about my mother, she dated and was engaged to the writer Clive Westlake
Perfect stereo.. No vocal gymnastics just straight powerful singing with so much feeling you can feel your heartstrings being played... WOW!!
i love your irony
I think this is my favourite Dusty song, but is difficult to select one. One must not forget the pianist either!
This is the best song Dusty ever sang, and its truly timeless. We miss you Mary !
Simple perfection. My favorite Dusty recording. Doesn't get better than this.
The greatest female british singer ever ..One of the truly great voices in 20th century music ..So underrated, when she was alive, only in death has she been cherished..Gone but never forgotten ..xx Dusty ...
Dusty Springfield was superb but in my opinion Sandy Denny was, is and forever will remain the greatest female vocalist of all time.
Says it all. Dusty was so loved by so many, so sadly missed.
Dusty is my favorite female singer from the 1960s. Today's female singers should listen to Dusty sing to hear what real singing is all about
A-1 Alan
The most authentic voice of the sixties.
And not only
Oh Dusty, what a voice, what emotion, what a memory for me
This would have made a great Bond Theme!
A year later....The Look Of Love
Just what I've been thinking every time I heard that song
Deborah probably you're right....even if I 've never watched them
Its far too good for a bond theme !!
Really interesting structure isn't it? Like three songs bolted together and it works so well. So much drama! One of my favourite Dusty tracks although near impossible to choose favourites with such an awesome back catalogue. 💖
Aside from her obvious talent, I think Dusty had the greatest name in popular music. Dusty Springfield. Its just perfect.
Dusty Rhoads is better.
This version is so wonderfully arranged, the orchestration is incredible. and her voice completes the package, Amazing !
Something about this song just tears my soul apart...
Know what you mean :)
Stunning, three songs in one, sung to perfection as always...easily my fave Dusty track! Credit to Clive Westlake for writing such a complex piece.
Proud to say Clive is my Mum's Cousin. Really wonderful song writer
@@richardharries2324 ‘was’ 😔 He died in 2000. He wrote other great songs, but this one was a real masterpiece, really special and memorable 🥰
@@richardharries2324 This song is written about my mother, Clive and her dated, shared their 21st and were engaged. She passed in 2019, while i knew of their relationship, i only knew of the song less than 24 hours before she died. His sister Marilyn, lovely lady, remained friends and visited my mother the day before she died.
Romulus rip hamish ☺️
One of Dusty's best, most dramatic performances in a recording studio. Not an easy song to sing I would imagine ...
Completely agree !.
Absolutely loving ❤❤
What a beautiful Voice! So full of soul! Love you Dusty!🥰
Will always be my favourite Dusty song
Thanks for all the memories Dusty.
Superb lyrics, perfectly pitched, definitely the best she ever did. 122 on the American Billboard charts - begs the question, "were they all tone-deaf."
Its was amazing to be a teenager in the sixties and have such amazing talent as Dusty .❤❤❤
Love all her song, especially this one. ❤ love x miss her .
Fantastic song. Takes me back to the late sixtees. Danced on this song with a beautifull Yorkshire lass and fell in love with .
I was lucky to have been brought up in a family that embraced 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. I was born in 75.. i loved the 80s and 90s tunes but always loved and had the older comfort songs
My all time favourite. Fantastic, don't make em like this any more.
Eine Frau die eine unverkennbare Stimme hat. Respekt vor dieser Leistung, auch die Emotionen so rüber zu bringen. Da ist alles Perfekt! ❤❤❤
I was on my way from Sydney to Southampton in Jan 1969 on the ship Fairstar and a girl called Murial sang along to this record playing on the Jukebox while sitting on my knees - Unforgettable ...
Love this, so dramatic...
Something about this song just tears my soul apart...
It does me too, it was written about my mother who passed a few years ago.
One of our best so missed still got 45s I only want to be with you, goin back so many😢❤
A very moving song by a great lady. Perfect in every way. Sad she's no longer with us but her music lives on with the Pet Shop Boys too.
Just heard this for the fist time today and it is pure Dusty. She was truly the first lady of the British Invasion and she put a lot of female singers on both sides of the pond to shame.
She was Irish
That voice ! Now I know why my dad loved this lady.I guess I have been struck with the same curse.Man , I just love this lady's voice.
zaboravljena Dusty..genijalno...zatvorim oci i brojim do deset...BRAVO !!!!
What a singer and guess what you can understand every lyric sung oh for the past when everything was so much better
Great singer, Great song!
Love the orchestra.
zaboravljena Dusty..genijalno...zatvorim oci i brojim do deset...BRAVO !!!!
Thanks Frans, this is a good version. Love this track, still hum it after all these years.
Thanks for all the memories Dusty.
Awesome song!!! Love it!!!
Iconic musical arrangement.
Heard this on the radio today and couldn't stop thinking about Texas Black Eyed Boy 🥰
Sounds almost Northern! ✊
Probably her best - why it didn't chart higher in the 'States' - God only knows. 'Numbs' the emotions for a few minutes.
silky smooth and very emotional
Top of the pile,at a time when the competition was fierce.
Close your eyes and she's black, not a mimic like some of the
recent clones,a true original.
Nobody sounds like Dusty, then or now.
She is NOT black or sounds black..............She has a husky voice and a hits those notes as an Opera singer would and knows she can sing!
Excellent observations
This lady was, and always will be the miss great Britain of female singers. The lady from tiger bay is a very close second.
Sandy Denny holds that title.

My all time favourite. Fantastic, don't make em like this any more.
Amazing song! One of our country's beloved singers, Pasha Hristova, has a version of this song in Bulgarian (Нека този миг да спре (Neka tozi mig da spre)) , which brought me here.
Great Song! Great Voice!
Amazing song !!!
Dusty Springfield and Elkie Brooks the UKs finest.
I heard this song written, note for note, word for word by Clive Westlake. He was one of several jobbing songwriters who worked 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday with an hour for lunch, at Carlin Music, 17 Saville Row, London. W1. Clive's tiny office, with nothing but a piano, a chair a reel-to-reel tape machine and a telephone, was at the top of the open staircase at Carlin Music and as I went about my own work I heard the destinctive opening piano lines of the song and Clive's voice singing into his tape machine. Other songwriters, Guy Fletcher and Doug Flett, had an office on Clive's landing, and Arnold, Martin and Morrow had an office in the basement, The Shaddows & Cliff Richard had their own offices on the ground floor ..... it was an amazing place for a young music lover like myself to work, and then seeing Dusty singing that song on TV, wow!
He wrote it about my mother, who he was engaged to. They never married, he had 3 marriages I believe, saw her years later in my home town and said he should have married her.
Great song. My favourite Dusty recording. Thanks for the upload.
Thank You Kevin
Its her best song by a mile. this particular version is way better than the others, Its just perfect.
Thank you for this music with such a fantastic voice
This is such an underrated song - thanks for posting it! And yes - what a forgotten little potential bond theme :)

just one word amasing.

just one word amasing.

PIERCES MY HEART, WHAT A SONG AND DUSTY THE GREATEST
Dusty great song and singer.
She had a hard life .. fabulous song
Superb!
Something about this song just tears my soul apart...
Amazing song !!!
Torch song. Clive westlake. Hi talent . dusty. Wow. Find her version of needle in a haystack. Wow
He wrote it about my mother, who she was engaged to.
I just read that the record company studio had such bad acoustics they recorded this song in the hallway, & I had to come & check it out & see.
I think the last comment sums it up! But let's not also forget how good the song is X
Genius
very meditative
WOW ❤❤❤
still think this should've been a Bond theme...
Mary O'Brien of Kilburn, would have been 80 on this day
She passed so early
Hold your breath and count to ten
2020 her unique tone ~
The one and only dusty springfield
The greatest female singer we've ever had, with apologies and respect to Sandy Denny and Amy Whitehouse!!!
Marc Almond and Sarah Cracknell do a great version of this too....
Elkie Brooks great singer
Sandy is the greatest of all time in my opinion. Amy Winehouse was a genius, the only person that didn't know it was her. They were one offs, there like will never be seen again.
