I've been looking forward to watching this *all* day! 🙂 The album this song came from is a concept album based around the story of a woman called Joyce Vincent, who passed away in her apartment in London and wasn't missed for three years (you may have read the story in the news) The album isn't about her, but it's a remembrance of her - forgotten in life, but remembered in death. So the whole thing explores themes like isolation, being invisible in plain sight, the forgotten lives that go on behind closed doors. It's a reminder that people with stories like this exist, should we care to remember them. On another level, it's also a metaphor for his career - 30 years of pouring everything he has into his music, often called 'the most successful British artist you've never heard of', but he has always struggled to get any kind of recognition or support from the mainstream media, so people don't get to hear his music. He has other songs like this, but they aren't all like this, with another song, you may have gotten a completely different impression of his work. I love this song for so many different reasons, it always makes me think about a hundred things. And I always cry for her, no matter how many times I watch it. I always want to make it better for her, but I know I can't, it makes me feel a bit helpless. Thank you for doing this - I loved the reaction for...Oh, lots of reasons also lol. 😄

Yes, SW is really quite special, his songs are a labour of love and he pours so much time and thought into each one. If you want a happy song that he's done, try Permeating. It's very ABBA/The Beatles - just pure, joyful pop and shows a very different side to him. I'll admit I was a bit worried about requesting the song, that it would cause upset if it was too much, but now I'm glad I did. And I'm really happy to hear you got something out of hearing it and that you've been exploring this stuff. ❤️
Steven Wilson is a musical genius. He is the former leader, guitar player and singer of Porcupine Tree. They are marvelous. Listen to the live version, in Tilburg, of Anesthetize. As a starter.
One of his first serious bands was No-Man. For example the No-Man album Flowermouth features some of his greatest work. Angel gets Caught in the Beauty Trap is really good. Songs like Kiss me Stupid and Days in the Trees are also really gorgeous and weird. Weird is a term I would use to describe No-Man in general. But they're really underappreciated among Steven Wilson fans.
If you havent done so yet Tommy - take a look and a listen to the live version of this song recorded on his Home Invasion DVD at the Royal Albert Hall. The performance they recorded was done as a sound check so to a completely empty hall which only makes the whole ambience even more impactful. Awesome song and I believe THE musical genius of our generation.

So great you're jumping into the world of Steven Wilson's music. Personally I'm a giant fan of his more prog rock band Porcupine Tree. I imagine you're going to get requests for some of his really long progressive classics that I love to death as well, but I'd go ahead and be the one to float the Porcupine Tree song "Trains" out there. Progressive bands often have their accessible songs within the repertoire and this is one of the finest to give a newcomer imo!

It hits us hard those senseless school shootings take away kids and fathers or mothers leaving behind people hollowed out emotionally and have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. I think she ponders a jump off the ledge instead of the routine. Everything she loved, her life was ripped away. Steven is a musical genius. Ninet Tayebs vocals are haunting. Jess Cope's animations make this video incredible. Hard to watch without my eyes tearing up. Porcupine Tree has been around since 1987, so quite awhile for Steven to amass a large catalogue of music. Similar bands too TOOL 1989, and Opeth 1990.
Steven Wilson's videos like Routine, Drive Home, and The Raven that Refused to Sing are deeply emotional pieces that can effect a person for some time after experiencing them. Like Blues tunes, I find that Steven Wilson's work can lift me out of a funk when I feel depressed. Odd how sad and painful music can make a person feel better some times. Don't you think?
The part of the video where the mother becomes enraged and throws things all over the place is also part of her daily routine. If she didn't do those things every day, there wouldn't be anything for her to keep cleaning up the next day. It's at this point in the video where the tantrum seems to finally have gotten a lot of her frustrations out, and she can start to read the letters of condolence, and hopefully move beyond. At least that's the way I interpret it. Nevertheless it is maybe one of the most powerful video translations of a song that I've ever seen.
