      I replayed the Xbox One X version to see if my memories were being clouded by nostalgia and no, it’s just the ports of DP that are garbage, the 360 release is not a broken piece of junk. Unfortunately Toybox has done a lot to damage the game’s reputation, DP was janky not a damn disaster.

    I think the saddest thing about Deadly Premonition 2 is that lack of mystery you mentioned. I remember buying the first Deadly Premonition the day it launched and being so immersed in that world. I was writing down notes about Greenvale inhabitants in a notebook, following them around to see what they were up to. Peaking through windows, learning more about them through side quests and observations. Learning as much as I could by engaging with the game's world. The narrative was also compelling and pushed me see things through. And by the end of the game it was this very sad but uplifting conclusion made better by that mystery as being one of the core aspects of the first Deadly Premonition.

    It's "funny" to see how the step backward between DP1&2 can be summarized with : the sheriff's office. In DP1 it have multiple rooms, multiple characters' routines, possibilities to eat/sleep/shave and a path to the basement. All of these things are gone in DP2. Gosh, even the basement (which is poorer than the first one) need a loading. This is an absolute nonsense. Don't know what's my predominant feeling about this "blessing in disguise"... Is it anger or is it pure sadness ? Why not both :/

    Super weird thought, but I've managed to reason to myself that the reason the first Deadly Premonition ended up with so many layers was because SWERY technically had years to work on the game, considering it got shelved back in a previous console cycle after several delays before suddenly getting picked up again much later.
    The sequel on the other hand actually made its initial deadline. Maybe he should've pushed it back rather than try to make the date.

    I was recommended this video by a friend of mine and while I enjoyed DP2 for the most part (I waited a patch or two to make the framerate somewhat more tolerable) I am not blind to its flaws, which you did a great job at analysing. It very much feels like Swery had a bunch of ideas and notes for the game that gradually got whittled away for budgetary reasons, ultimately leading to the proverbial death by a thousand cuts. There are glimpses of an engaging and satisfying story at times but they're rare, and the gulfs between these glimpses only make them more noticeable.
    I certainly agree that there was no reason for Kaysen to be directly involved in the game except maybe as the original catalyst for Lena developing Saint Rouge. He definitely should've also been wearing a wearing different outfit and the framing in the "Luigi's mansion" scene between him and Lena could've been done differently , so his silhouette wasn't immediately recognisable but could be deduced (though not with 100% certainty) by fans of DP1. That combined with, say, Kaysen driving his truck past York's balcony during breakfast on his way out of Le Carre would've made the connection to him tangible for DP fans without being ridiculously in-your-face obvious.

    while i wouldnt say that we feel the same way about the game, i cant really say that i can disagree with any of ur points either. i guess i just dont really care as much, and tend to look at the positives more, nor were my expectations or hopes v high to begin with haha. which may or may be a bad outlook sometimes i dunno. granted i didnt experience any glitches, and u clearly did not have that amount of luck because JESUS. i did not know DP2 could go full bethesda like that. the only things that i got hung up about personally, was how sucky the shooter segments were, and how the plot went all over the place for a bit. but i still found that entertaining for what it was. still, i can absolutely understand why u lovingly hate it.

    As much as it pains me to admit it, I agree 100% with this review. I ended up loving DP2 just because I love fan-servicey shit like that ending was, but there's no denying that DP2, performance issues aside, is a much more shallow experience than the original. I finished it once and haven't felt like going back since, and I probably won't ever.
    Meanwhile, the original gets replayed at least 1-2 times a year just because I'm always learning something new each time. Sucks that we didn't get the great DP sequel that we've wanted all these years, but if anything, it's nice to know that more people have garnered an interest in the original and have the ability to play it at all.

    The atmosphere of DP1 is unparallelled. While everyone complains about the "oversized" town, I adore it. It's actually realistic. Have you been to rural towns? They really are like this. Long stretches of road connecting houses, factories and farms. It's great.
    If you get Carol's car, the Galaxy of Terror song plays in the background while driving in the rain. Play it in first person. It's unironically and genuinely immersive and amazing. I haven't played anything even close to capturing the mood, and it's honestly unfortunate that DP1 has a "so bad it's good" thing. Yes it's all of that too, but at many points the game is profoundly great and beautiful.
    Le Carre just doesn't have that draw. I miss the car. I miss seeing where people are on the map. I miss having more reoccuring side characters to eat lunch with. I love DP2 but can feel in my bones I won't play it again. Whereas DP1 holds a special place in my heart.

    I liked the game. It did right by York as a character through the writing, I thought. But it was kinda unnecessary as a story. Liked the set-up and structure, but the ending - while nice - made me shrug me shoulders a little. Know what it reminded me of? El Camino. Didn't ruin Breaking Bad, but what was the point?

    Great video - it was tough to hear some of your honesty, but it is backed up. I enjoyed the comprehensiveness of the video, similar to the first SWERY Files video. I think with the production quality, it could only result in good things if SWERY (or Toybox) ever watches it. Also, it's important to recognize that, as fans, we really could've gotten a better story.

    Okay I guess not many will agree here but I really felt the first game was intended to be way more serious and dark, "lynchian" but came out more wacky and zany unintentionally.
    Seeing how well that worked, DP2 reeeally leaned into the "crazy funny" and as mentioned in this video, MEMES of course.
    To me that didn't work one bit, just as no movie that Tommy Wiseau made after The Room has managed to capture the unintentional comedy that it had.
    Some things you just can't force, and Deadly Premonition is one of them.

    • @hoyhoy852
      @hoyhoy852 5 месяцев назад

      @@HikikomoriMedia I think the intro with Zach is pretty sincere. The story just kinda falls apart and is very poorly told. And let's not pretend that SWERY has complete control over the direction just because of disillusionment; the marketing is done by ToyBox, and they were the ones focusing hard on zaniness and bad optimization being totally DP. SWERY did want DP2 to be radically different from the original. It was the producer who wanted it to be the reproduction of DP1; no doubt one of ToyBox's best selling games considering their poor lineup.
      I kind of wonder if that entire dog chase sequence was just cynical "here's your DP1 bro" from SWERY.

    my biggest disappointment with DP2 is how easily it can be written out of the canon by the scenes of the original game itself. It feels like most of the game was cut towards the end of development and what we got was salvaged from the remnants of it.

    • @HikikomoriMedia
      @HikikomoriMedia  Год назад +3

      According to some vague statements by SWERY and keep in mind, he's very biased in favor of himself, he claimed there were nearly 1,000 tickets/notes he had in with ToyBox in the final months of DP 2. He claimed ToyBox would not reply to his e-mails and they released the game without him knowing. I'm not sure the dev team was responsible for the script, but SWERY's claims might have elucidated some friction.

    Amazing video! I'm someone who thinks all of your points are completely right and totally valid but also ended up kind of loving it anyway in spite of itself. But I agree that it could be so much better with even just a few minor changes/additions. It's pretty clear that development of this was troubled the entire way to say the least and it shows.
    I think a hard mode or harder ng+ or anything like this would actually make it so much more engaging as far as the gameplay goes. Like you said, give us a reason to care about all these upgrades and systems that barely play any factor in the game at all. If the animals/shadows were actually dangerous and hard to kill it would immediately give us more of a reason to care about not being stinky to attract their attention and for us to hunt down materials to upgrade our gun/self to be more powerful. On that note, has anyone here noticed anything different on the second playthrough? The game does have a legit ng+ unlike the first, but there's little-to-no information about it yet so I'm not sure if anything does change to make it more interesting but that would be hoping for a lot of this game I'm sure.

    Great video! It was well worth the wait! I'm really bummed you encountered so many issues though :( I was so shocked by the number of glitches, soft locks, and the overall lagginess of the game footage during the video! Your overall disappointment is completely understandable and seeing your video made me understand why so many people had such difficulties getting through it...I had no idea it ran this poorly for others. I wonder if you playing a digital copy, mainly docked, and whether or not you had a newer model of switch played a difference in the game's overall performance?
    I'm not exaggerating when I say that I am floored by the discrepancy between our play experiences. I love Deadly Premonition but if I experienced half of what you did during your own play through there would be no way I would have recommend the sequel to anyone during my own review. (here I thought the worst was it crashing twice on me!) This is really in excusable and I can't believe Nintendo was okay to publish it in this state! I streamed the game pre-patch and while laggy in some areas, it was never in the single digits for me indoors (that I could tell). I never found myself out of bounds either and I skateboarded all over the map...I only was able to get off map in one specific spot which made for a funny video when I forced York to skateboard off the map and fall for days.
    I did wonder how people got York flying in the air with their skateboard as I never got it to work myself lol....I guess it depends on how well the game plays for you overall. It's so disappointing that people's mileage will vary for this release just like with the PC port. I had such high hopes that the sequel would at least be stable and run decently for everyone :( apparently that's a big ask from Toybox....I should have known given the state of Origins.

  • @Pos1tr0nic

    The difference between the townsfolk and their sidequests in both games is the most disappointing one to me. Being able to follow people around and see where they live adds so much to making the town feel alive. The characters will say different things depending on the chapter and the weather and where they are, which makes following them around interesting! Even when some sidequests just gave you a trading card or something, it was great for giving the characters... well, character. Nick's letter to Olivia or the General's war stories are genuinely touching.
    DeadPrem 2... doesn't even let you follow around some of the main characters. I think Lena's the worst case scenario, since she's introduced right before her otherworld level starts and you never get to speak to her outside of cutscenes. Similarly, Galena is only hanging around Le Carré for one chapter before meeting her demise, and any time you talk to her you get a canned response about how she can't find her dolly. She doesn't have to be wailing and dancing like Sallie all the time, but it's hard to develop any sort of feelings towards her.

    • @HikikomoriMedia
      @HikikomoriMedia  2 года назад +3

      Hey thanks for your perspective. Watching the digression in character routines from DP1 to DP2 to TGL is staggering. Somehow, the team managed to make the citizens look and feel more robotic than before. They straight up removed York's ability to investigate outside the confines of story missions, so you're not incentivized to follow anyone around. The plot leaves little to the imagination with the "profiling" simplified to "here's exactly whodunnit and how they did it." DP2 has grown on me, after playing TGL, but it cannot hold a candle to the depth of DP1.

    Great video, sums up almost every problem I had with the game perfectly. DP2 feels like the direct to DVD sequel to the original.
    I cannot understate how much the side content in this game disappointed me, the exploration is a huge part of why I love the original and all of those elements are just... gone. I wouldn't have minded the constant movie chatter, but it's all written with such a layer of irony to it and falls back constantly on the same "Gee Zach, this unrealistic movie sure had HYPER REALISM" bit. The original game just felt like Swery talking about his own taste in movies, rather than another bit to try and make the protagonist seem wacky.

    Release day Zach's apartment was 22 fps, probably the highest in any part of the game as sad as that is. Skateboarding used to be 11 fps with frequent dips to the single digits. The loading screens even had multiple seconds of 0 fps. _The loading screens._ And I guess since you didn't mention the minutes-long black screen the second time York meets Houngan that they must have fixed it in a patch. Be glad. (Fps information from Digital Foundry)
    I agree with everything in the video except the 2019 scenes, I liked listening to Zach's insane ramblings though I really hated Aaliyah being a stupid tryhard with all the Nietzsche quotes. People actually want her to take York's place and I'm like hell no, it's not Deadly P without Francis York Morgan at the helm. Also Swery said the cutscenes of kindly grandpappy Zach from the Director's Cut aren't canon anymore :(

    DP2 is probably the first where I'd tell someone to watch all the cutscenes on RUclips than to actually play the game itself. It was awful on many fronts and is at times pretty much disrespectful to the original as a videogame. Then The Good Life is well... I'd rather get some Starbucks.
    Swery's two newest projects, a 15fps VR Danganronpa(?) whodunnit and the other game which looks like if The Missing had combat and slasher film references. With it being a supposed collaboration with Suda where his creative involvement is questionable. Maybe Deadly Premonition (1) and D4 really were flukes...

    Did he have FOXDIE or Shitty Clone Syndrome or whatever Snake was supposed to have in MGS4? Was the projected York persona always supposed to look younger than what Zach actually was? But this sequel misses everything that made the original special. I played the PC version with fan fix so I won't talk about performance because it was good, but everything else was bad. Bland story with many nonsense, flat characters, everything in the game feels super shallow and flat, nothing has depth, you make no connection with any character, it's just sad. First game had some flaws but i could never say it was stupid or boring, but unfortunetly sequel is really boring. I saw multiple people in RUclips comment sections and on Reddit theorizing that York at the end of DP2 is a demon that possesses Patricia, and uses her body to type their messages to Zach. It irritated me to no end, its so dumb. I think Deadly Premontion is deep, but not *that* deep.

    • @abuelaconresaca4773

      Hey, I know I'm late to the party, but I'd like to join in! I just started DP2 and only played the (very long) intro, so I don't know anything about the demon part, but... it's true that when I finished DP1 I perceived York as a paranormal entity. I don't speak English very fluently, but I'll try to explain myself. When we see the boy Zach and the boy York meeting for the first time in the white room, they are both wearing different pajamas. I think this is intentional to show us that they are two separate entities. Also, the way York talks to Zach in that moment... Do you know the myth about vampires, that they have to ask permission before entering a house? York tells Zach who he is, offers him a service, Zach accepts and they seal the pact with a handshake. That's not to say that York is an evil entity, because he clearly isn't. I believe that York was simply a disembodied entity that was there, perhaps drawn to Kaysen's aura, and when Zach's mind retreated inward, hiding in the white room, he took the opportunity to "enter" and ask for permission to stay in that body that had been left without a "captain" in command. I don't know if I can explain myself.If York had not been there, Zach would have ended his days as a catatonic patient. By the way, the change in clothing is also appreciated again when we play Zach at the end of the game: York was dressed in the full suit, but Zach does not wear the jacket. While I was playing DP2, I went through the cutscene where a girl whose name I can't remember "forces" York into signing a contract. She tells him to write that, if she gets sick, York must take care of her medical expenses. But York ends writing a VERY different thing. Basically what he writes is the same he promised Zach: that he was going to protect him. And that reminded me so much of that DP scene... York had once again made a pact with a human. Furthermore, the fact that York is a paranormal entity that inhabits Zach's body thanks to a pact would explain his "sensory powers" that allow him to read fortunes in coffee or see the ghosts of the victims of the original raincoat killer. Greetings.
      I do think DP is very deep in the writing. It's the part Sweary seems to be better at.

    Edit: just watched your last Swery Files video, never mind that.
    As I understand Director's Cut is no more canon - Deadly Premonition Origins is which doesn't include new scenes. Also I didn't put together 4 Davids as D4 reference but there's a remark to Aliyh question to the noise from ceiling in Zach's room. He answers to her that it's his noisy neighbor, and that his wife was killed but people in suits closed the case, but he's been kicking more and more recently (almost a quote from a game).
    Edit: this still applies.
    Another thing - those red letters in new character's introductions. According to Swery this is a thing that no one guessed and he had to bring it up on twiiter. In the end all those letters are an anagram to "Devil whispers in2 Zachs ear". Cool cool. I don't know, personally I had my share of good moments from DP2 but there's also a lot flaws. Maybe Swery can't into good writing anymore or he was busy with another game development, this Good Life or producers pushed their vision - who knows. I would really hope all this stuff isn't for nothing and he plans on bringing D4 back but I don't hold my breath. Having just finished the PC version of DP2, I'll agree with most of the criticism besides the main story. It's consistently great, although it does feel a bit rushed at times, especially in chapter 2. It's strange how we get introduced to Lena - arguably this game's main villain and one of the more interesting characters - and then 10 minutes later she dies. Oh, and performance issues are a thing of the past with this PC version.
    I'm very happy this game exists as a way to wrap up the story from DP1. Especially the ending part is particularly strong. If viewed as an interactive story, this game is great... However, as a game it has some 'interesting' design choices. I enjoyed the design of Le Carre and the genuine infusion of Louisiana culture that makes the town feels like an immersive, real place. But whoever designed the side quests and the stamps should be checked into an asylum. Not only do virtually none of these quests add anything to the story, but I can confidently say I've never seen grindier quests in any single player game. 100 game overs? 30 perfect games of bowling? The complete annihilation of the entire animal population of Louisiana (750 kills per animal)? Not to mention my disappointment when I realized every "Otherworld" section is literally identical except bosses. Every section reuses the same textures from the sugar plantation... And there's a grand total of 3 enemies, none of which pose a threat in the slightest. I literally had to stop and observe the third (and final) enemy type to even know what their attacks were, since they're so slow and weak you'll just easily kill them before they get to do anything.

    "Rushed and unfinished" it is. Myself I have never encountered a single softlock, so my playthrough was smooth, the only mistake I had made is dedicating about 30 hours to sidequests before deciding to just finish the game. The story felt unfinished, but I'm a simple man and I enjoyed the York and Zach moments. I wasn't very impressed with the final act at all, but the epic wholesome chungus scene with Zach chatting with York using the zoomer slang put a smile on my face at least.
    I thought exactly the same thing - that DP1 was much more ambitious. Story was so thorough. Graphics were so much better. But it still wasn't a very good game, and... DP1 was never a huge success, right? And the studio that owns it isn't exactly the most prestigious company, considering their poor ports... It's not like they do the shoddy ports out of pure malice, they're shoddy low profit companies filled with unskilled staff. Both Toybox Inc's and Rising Star Games's portfolios are pretty poor. And Swery's own White Owls is... I've noticed that you played The Good Life only after DP2, but as someone who played TGL before DP2 (I didn't finish it but I plan to at some point), that was the most similar game to DP2. So... I just think it all comes down to coming terms with the reality of the fact that our dream DP2 was always an impossibility - there's just no staff and budget at these companies for this kind of game. And according to interviews, it was further destroyed by COVID, which Swery had a very hard time adjusting his workflow to. And the claim that developers straight up ghosted him, the director, for several months prior to release, is just wild. If this is true, I don't see how Swery would ever want to work with them again, so, here goes our final DP. Maybe DP2 really is some kind of meta commentary with how it went through disastrous development cycle yet again, presumably got budget way lower than original, and instead of the positive meme acclaim of the older internet it got the taste of the cancel culture of the modern internet.
    I wonder what's next for Swery. TGL and DP2 make me think he has some kind of fetish for grind. I hope not. It's just depressing seeing developers I liked being forced into unfavorable conditions with small studios where it's pretty much an impossibility to develop bigger games again. You must've seen Tomonobu "Oatmeal Cookie" Itagaki shilling NFTs recently. It got met with boos and accusing him of being lowly conman. But I think that's just sad. It's not like they want it. Senior devs falling out of public consciousness pretty much can't return. I have a relevant story about it. The financial crisis of 2008 wiped out all game dev studios in my country. I had no idea where most of them had gone. But I did some research recently. Some managed to return with new studios to a huge success, some became perpetual outsource studios for bigger studios from the richer countries, some resorted to making browser games and then mobile games for all eternity. I've read interview with one of the latter. One studio was well known for making multiple critically acclaimed series and they didn't have a single blemish on their portfolio. They were really proud of it and director was always brimming with creativity. Many wondered where he was gone. But when he resurfaced, it wasn't with the good news. He pretty much said he's only been making browser games and mobile games since then, he tried to approach many publishers to give his studio work, but all of them were shot down, and from his words, there's just no way out out of this hell. I hope that will not be Swery's ultimate fate.

    It is indeed a shallower experience when compared to DP1, it feels like a game rushed to the market and it REALLY shows.
    Toybox's incompetence as a developer is shocking, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that frame rate, I thought something was wrong with my Switch.
    I hope emulation fixes the performance in the future, but the code is so badly optimized I'm not sure we'll ever see a stable frame rate. Sigh...
